JLF returns with delight to the beautiful and vibrant city of Adelaide. Our experience here last year was exhilarating and indeed euphoric and I hope and believe that the next three days will evoke the same special magic.

The Jaipur Literature Festival is a unique celebration of writing that has grown into something bigger and more wonderful than anything we could ever have hoped for when we first conceived of this festival more than a decade ago. We are as surprised as we are proud of this. All events are completely free, our authors mingle with the crowds and eat with them on a first-come, first-served basis.

We are each other’s stories, and the human race has evolved and progressed through shared knowledge and intertwined narratives. The range of our themes and sessions is eclectic and all-embracing. Like Australia itself, they are diverse and multi-faceted.

The Festival believes in the human imagination, beyond borders and boundaries, nations and ideologies. The great Indian writer Mahasweta Devi, in her keynote address in Jaipur in 2013, declared that the right to dream should be the first fundamental right. JLF Adelaide celebrates this right to dream, to imagine our worlds, to share our stories. We are deeply honoured to be here in this city with its treasures of cultural and linguistic diversity, to celebrate the arts and listen in to writers and thinkers from around the world.

This November, Namita and I, alongside Teamwork Arts, producer of the Festival, will present a sort of pocket-sized Jaipur from the Aravallis in India to the Adelaide Plains. We can't wait to once again share with Australia a little taste of the energy and colourful brilliance that has made Jaipur the most happening literary festival in the world.

JLF Adelaide provides the unique atmosphere and visual flair of the iconic Jaipur Literature Festival along with an incredible line-up of over 60 speakers. We are thrilled to have Festival Directors William Dalrymple and Namita Gokhale oversee the programme which is jampacked with more than 40 events, including morning music, panel discussions and performances.

This year, a selection of performances from the OzAsia Festival programme have been integrated with JLF Adelaide. This includes Akram Khan’s Outwitting the Devil, Omar Musa’s Since Ali Died and Abhishek Thapar’s My Home at the Intersection. Also, South Australian artist Daniel Connell has curated a special exhibition called Sisters Sangam featuring South Australian artists collaborating with artists from Jaipur.

Paul Zacharia in conversation with Tony Joseph, introduced by Shashi Tharoor Iconic Malayalam writer Paul Zacharia presents his first English novel, A Secret History of Compassion.

Zacharia’s body of literary work includes short stories, novellas, travelogues, screenplays, essays, columns and children’s books. His latest novel examines his relationship with the Left, the erosion of ideology and the vocabulary of social justice. In conversation with writer and journalist Tony Joseph, he speaks of bilinguality, the pursuit of pure storytelling and the method behind his literary madness.

Huo Yan and Melanie Cheng in conversation with Rebekah Clarkson A session that travels the enormous mental and geographical distances that characterise the immigrant life. In Melanie Cheng’s Room for a Stranger, a student is sent from Hong Kong at great expense to Australia to get an education. In Huo Yan’s Dry Milk, a Beijing immigrant has called New Zealand home for three decades. Both men find the Antipodes to be alien places, and it is through their eyes that we encounter lonely and unsettling lives. In conversation with author, editor and academic Rebekah Clarkson.

Wu Ming-Yi , Paulo Lemos Horta and Matthew Hooton in conversation with Victoria Purman Many of our greatest stories rely on the metaphor of arduous journeys. For Wu Ming-Yi and his novel The Stolen Bicycle, the journey is one that sees a son search for his father’s history. In Paulo Lemos Horta’s Aladdin: A New Translation, a rebellious boy goes in search of riches. Matthew Hooton has written Typhoon Kingdom, a tale of two interconnected epic journeys set 300-hundred years apart in Korea. In a session of readings and conversations, they discuss their books and backstories with bestselling author Victoria Purman.

7. WRITING FROM THE MARGINS: RACE IN AUSTRALIA 12:00PM-1:00PM | QUARTET BAR

Claire G. Coleman, Omar Musa and Mridula Nath Chakraborty in conversation What does it mean to be an outsider even in your own land? With her new novel The Old Lie, Claire G. Coleman takes us into a war in the future to illuminate the past. In Omar Musa’s play Since Ali Died, the poet explores his Malaysian heritage and the realities of growing up a brown-skinned Muslim boy in a predominantly caucasian society. Cultural commentator Mridula Nath Chakraborty considers the sub-continental diaspora cultures that now call Australia home.

Together they share their experiences and insights.

Ahronglong Sakinu and David Pollock in conversation A Paiwan tribal leader and a forest hunter, Ahronglong Sakinu is the author of the novel, The Sage Hunter, an account of an Indigenous Eastern Taiwan tribe’s attempts to protect an ancient burial ground. David Pollock is a second-generation pastoralist whose memoir, The Wooleen Way, tells the story of his efforts to restore degraded leasehold land in country Western Australia. They share their stories about their love for the land and the battles to save it.

Hannah Kent, Intan Paramaditha and Namita Gokhale in conversation with Laura Kroetsch The struggle for women to assume and retain power in patriarchal societies has always been fraught with tension. A session with prominent fiction writers from different cultures, that draws on folklore, myth and the fantastical. Hannah Kent’s The Good People is a novel that draws on the rural folklore of 19th century Ireland. Intan Paramaditha’s Apple and Knife draws on fairy tales, myths and horror stories in an effort to explore women’s power. Namita Gokhale’s Himalayan Trilogy including her latest novel, Things to Leave Behind, searches myth, folklore and modernity to celebrate the strength of mountain women. In conversation with Laura Kroetsch they have an insightful interrogation on the power of the feminine.

10. WRITING IMMIGRANTS, WRITING THE CITY 1:15PM-2:15PM | QUARTET BAR

Roanna Gonsalves and Shameem Black in conversation with Mridula Nath Chakraborty A sense of belonging is an essential component to the notion of identity. Mumbai-born Roanna Gonsalves moved to Australia as an international student. American-born writer and scholar Shameem Black focuses on cosmopolitan encounters, Asian diasporas and the ethics of representation. In conversation with writer, translator and academic Mridula Nath Chakraborty, they read from their work and discuss the roles of memory and community as well as the multiplicities of identity in their writings.

Billy Griffiths in conversation with Jared Thomas Passionate historian Billy Griffiths interweaves the history of Australian archaeology with the struggle for recognition and rights of Aboriginal people. In his acclaimed book Deep Time Dreaming: Uncovering Ancient Australia, he goes beyond the few centuries of written Australian historical records to dig deeper into the continents past through its material remains. In conversation with author Jared Thomas, he discusses how knowing the past is crucial to understanding the present.

David Malouf in conversation with Nicholas Jose The internationally acclaimed and much beloved writer David Malouf has been awarded the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, the Australia Council Award for Lifetime Achievement, and many other prizes. In a session of readings and conversation, he speaks of his enormous body of work, including poetry, prose and fiction. His recent volume of poetry, An Open Book, contains meditations on mortality and memory, while his novels cover an enormous span of landscape and human experience. In conversation with Nicholas Jose, he shares insights into his writing, the challenges of the writing life and perspectives on the writers who have moved and inspired him.

James Crabtree in conversation with William Dalrymple Over the past two decades, India has grown at an unprecedented rate. While 'King of the Good Times' Vijay Mallya languishes in exile, other major `Bollygarchs' prosper at home despite a series of scandals. Issuing jewel-encrusted invitations to their children's weddings, these tycoons exert huge power in both business and politics. But India's explosive economic rise has driven inequality to new extremes. Millions remain trapped in slums and corruption is endemic. Reformers fight to wrest the nation from these dark forces, leaving its fate poised between that of a prosperous democratic giant and a saffron-tinged version of Russia. Which will it become? James Crabtree discusses this and more in a conversation with author and Festival co-director William Dalrymple.

Damien Shen and Dominic Guerrera in conversation with Dr Katherine Tamiko Arguile Artist Damien Shen draws on his Ngarrindjeri and Chinese ancestry to create work that carries intense personal meaning and communicates fresh ways of viewing Australian identity. His artistic practice is embedded in conjoined histories, revisiting the people, places and stories that shape the world he occupies. Dominic Guerrera is of Ngarrindjeri, Kaurna and Italian ancestry. He is a writer and poet who has also worked extensively in Aboriginal healthcare. In conversation with Dr. Katherine Tamiko Arguile, they discuss the crucial ways in which their work acts as a reservoir and representation of complex histories and identities.

Michelle de Kretser in conversation with Jessica Alice Much awarded writer Michelle de Kretser, two-time winner of the Miles Franklin Prize, speaks of the sources and process of writing fiction. Her recent novel, The Life to Come, links narratives about loneliness, intimacy and betrayal while exploring the violence that the act of storytelling imposes on truth. The Sri Lankan-born author, raised in Melbourne and Paris, carries the imprint of all these geographies in her work. In conversation with Jessica Alice, she speaks of her inspirations and how and why she chronicles the political, social and economic zeitgeist of her times.

Tony Joseph in conversation with Mridula Nath Chakraborty Recent advances in genetic science have made it possible for us to explore and understand the roots of our DNA. Tony Joseph, author of the bestseller Early Indians: The Story of Our Ancestors and Where We Came From takes us on a journey of socio-cultural and genetic history across continents and cultures. By amalgamating ancient and modern DNA, studies demonstrate that genetic history across the world has seen multiple waves of ancient human migrations. In conversation with writer, translator and academic Mridula Nath Chakraborty, he discusses the stories of our ancestors.

Lok Fung, Intan Paramaditha and Omar Sakr in conversation The language of gender marks the shift from a binary understanding of identity to a more diverse spectrum in contemporary literature and popular culture. Poet and critic Lok Fung considers fairytales, cross-dressing and the idea of male in Hong Kong cinema. Writer Intan Paramaditha talks about sex, death, feminism and prejudice. Arab-Australian and queer poet Omar Sakr explores what it means to control the narrative. Together these writers share a session of readings and conversations.

Peter Varghese, Shashi Tharoor and Tony Birch in conversation with James Crabtree As political certainties crumble and polarities assert themselves even as climate change wreaks havoc across the world, it is clear we live in troubled times. Peter Varghese is a former diplomat and current Chancellor of the University of Queensland. Shashi Tharoor is a former diplomat, politician and bestselling writer. Tony Birch is a renowned Australian writer, academic and environmental activist. Together with author and journalist James Crabtree, they examine social realities and the context of the changes around us.

Darryl Jones in conversation with Sonya Feldhoff Australian naturalist and behavioural ecologist Darryl Jones, author of The Birds At My Table and the newly published Feeding the Birds at Your Table: A Guide for Australia, speaks of his encounters with avian friends, crows, magpies, pigeons and others, and their evolutionary behaviour as they adjust to rapid urbanisation. Crows, famed for their intelligence and for never forgetting a face, are observed to be changing their habits while human-magpie conflicts are on the rise. In conversation with Sonya Feldhoff, Jones discusses birds and habitats, migration and behavioural patterns, as well as the pros and cons of bird-feeding, and its impact on bird populations. A fascinating session full of deep insights on how humans understand and interact with nature and other species.

Melizarani T. Selva and Omar Sakr introduced by Dominic Guerrera Weaving questions of politics, religion, love and identity through their words, poets make powerful storytellers and commentators. Melizarani T. Selva is a spoken-word artist, poetry educator and author of a collection of poems titled Taboo. Poet Omar Sakr is the author of The Lost Arabs and These Wild Houses. With an introduction by writer, poet and artist Dominic Guerrera, they come together in a session of powerful readings that highlights the correlation of word, voice and text.

Felice Jacka in conversation ‘You are what you eat’ takes on a new dimension with Australian scientist and Professor Felice Jacka’s research on dietary practices and mental and brain health. In her book Brain Changer, Jacka, a leading international expert in Nutritional Psychiatry, explores how eating habits weigh into risks of anxiety and depression, and influence our overall brain health, including the risk of dementia. She sheds light on her important research into the relationship between nutrition, gut and brain health.

22. LANDSCAPE OF FEAR 10:45AM-11:45AM | QUARTET BAR

Claire G. Coleman, Sheng Keyi and Intan Paramaditha in conversation with Laura Kroetsch Described as 'subversive feminist horror at its best', Intan Paramaditha’s Apple and Knife explores the dangers, fear and power conflicts that lurk when women carve out a space for themselves in today's world. Sheng Keyi’s haunting novel Death Fugue is a political allegory, one that is a product of the Tiananmen moment. Claire G. Coleman is the author of Terra Nullius, which dwells on the scars of colonisation and The Old Lie, where she turns to speculative fiction and themes of intergalactic warfare. Together with Laura Kroetsch, they discuss the concept of fear as it snakes through gender, sexuality, politics and culture.

Ben Stubbs and Christopher Kremmer in conversation with Sonya Feldhoff A compelling session that explores journeys across Asia and Australia. Novelist and journalist Christopher Kremmer has written several works of narrative non-fiction based upon his long sojourn in India and other parts of Asia, including the classic travel memoir Carpet Wars: From Kabul To Baghdad. He speaks of the geographic connectivities that inform his work and the learnings he has accumulated from them. Ben Stubbs is the author of the recent The Crow Eaters: A Journey Through South Australia, a record of his voyage of discovery in his own backyard and home state. He follows the history of the camels and cameleers who travelled to the Outback from Afghanistan and India in the 1860s. In conversation with Sonya Feldhoff, Kremmer and Stubbs explore changing notions of travel and new ways to look at places far and near.

Manisha Koirala in conversation with Sanjoy K. Roy Bollywood actor Manisha Koirala shares the highs and lows of her life, her career, relationships and her battle with cancer. In conversation with Sanjoy K. Roy, Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, she speaks of the pressures of her film career, the life choices she was compelled to make and how she redefined her priorities and regained a sense of balance and well-being. A no-holds-barred session about the emotional roller-coaster ride of Koirala’s life post-diagnosis, her learnings, inspirations and the process of healing.

Tony Birch in conversation with Karen Wyld Renowned Australian writer and academic Tony Birch has roots that reach back to Punjab, Afghanistan, Barbados and Indigenous heritage. In conversation with Karen Wyld, he speaks of literature, activism and the continuum of themes, ideas and obsessions that inhabit his novels and short stories. The session focuses on his richly layered new book The White Girl and the multiple repositories of memory within it, which so urgently evoke Australia’s dark and violent colonial past.

Melizarani T. Selva and Abhishek Thapar in conversation Two writers with hyphenated identities study the migrant experience and its impact on their work.

Poet and journalist Melizarani T. Selva explores taboos, the Indian diaspora and women’s empowerment. In his stage play My Home at the Intersection, Indian-born and Amsterdam-based theatremaker Abhishek Thapar explores three generations of a family living in the Punjab. Together they speak of the divergent worlds and dual identities of migrant narratives.

Ranjana Srivastava in conversation with Sonya Feldhoff Of all the experiences we share, two universal events bookend our lives: we were all born and we all die. In her new book, A Better Death, oncologist and writer Ranjana Srivastava considers the question of death and how mortality must be accepted and embraced. In conversation with Sonya Feldhoff, she explains the importance of accepting the end in a dignified and peaceful manner.

Huo Yan, Sheng Keyi, Lok Fung and A Yi in conversation with Nicholas Jose An exploration of Chinese fiction across genres with four contemporary writers who talk about narratives that explore Greater China including Hong Kong today. This session features novelist and critic Huo Yan, Beijing-based writer Sheng Keyi, poet and cultural critic Lok Fung and policemanturned-crime writer A Yi. In a conversation with writer Nicholas Jose, they discuss their journey and how it impacts their work.

Ahronglong Sakinu, Alena Murang and DOBBY in conversation An engaging session with writers, educators, artists and musicians that celebrates three different Indigenous communities. Ahronglong Sakinu is a writer and founder of a hunter school that educates young people about Paiwan culture and practice. Alena Murang started ART4 Studio / Kanid Studio in her native Borneo, an organisation that uses art to instil Indigenous values. DOBBY is a FilipinoAboriginal rapper who teaches hip hop, drumming and Indigenous studies.

Christopher Kremmer, Michelle de Kretser and Robert Dessaix in conversation with William Dalrymple Travel writing is one of the most ancient forms of literature, but is it losing its relevance in the age of globalisation, travel technology and space cruises? Journalist and acclaimed author Christopher Kremmer has written Carpet Wars: From Kabul to Baghdad and Inhaling The Mahatma, awardwinning author Michelle de Kretser has written Questions of Travel, and the prolific author Robert Dessaix has written books such as The Pleasures of Leisure. Together, they discuss the genre and read from their work with historian and Festival co-director William Dalrymple.

Wu Ming-Yi with interpreter Baiyi Sun Acclaimed Taiwanese writer Wu Ming-Yi’s book The Stolen Bicycle expertly weaves an intricate storyline that often blends the lines between reality and fiction. Bringing together the history of Taiwan with the history of the bicycle, and that of his own family, he presents an integrated work of fiction. He discusses the inspirations and insights behind his iconic writing.

A Yi worked as a police officer, secretary and editor before settling down at the age of 32 to the fiction he always knew he would write. His first collection of short stories, Grey Stories, was published in 2008. This was followed by The Bird Saw Me, a book of observations, blog posts and sketches titled Guaren and the novella Now, What Shall I Do Next?. His first book to appear in English is A Perfect Crime, published in 2015.

Abhishek Thapar is a theatremaker, performer, puppeteer and artist based in Amsterdam. He holds a postgraduate diploma in Physical Theatre from LISPA, London and a Masters in Theatre from DAS Theatre, Amsterdam. He is currently building an artistic research and practice in post-colonial epistemologies, historiographic metafiction and storytelling.

Ahronglong Sakinu is a Taiwanese writer and hunter dedicated to restoring Paiwan culture and bringing self-confidence to his people. He won the Wu Yung-fu Literary Prize for The Sage Hunter, which was translated into English and Japanese and selected by Harvard University's East Asian Language Programmes for its reading list.

Alena Murang is one of the first and few females to play the Sapé, drawing on her heritage to share stories in native languages of Sarawak, a Malaysian state on the island of Borneo. She has performed extensively across the world. She was a UNESCO Youth Ambassador in 2017 and is a youth advisor to UNESCO Asia Pacific. In 2018, she was awarded the Miri Mayor Award for Tourism.

Ben Stubbs is a senior lecturer in Journalism and Writing at the University of South Australia. Dr. Stubbs has worked as a travel writer previously for publications such as the New York Times, the Guardian, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Toronto Star. He has published three books on travel writing, with his latest, The Crow Eaters: A Journey Through South Australia, exploring the untold stories and unexplored corners of the state.

Billy Griffiths is an award-winning writer and historian at Deakin University in Melbourne. His latest book, Deep Time Dreaming: Uncovering Ancient Australia, was named Book of the Year at the 2019 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards.

He is a senior lecturer in Literary Journalism at the University of New South Wales, Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Canberra, and Honorary Fellow of the Australia India Institute.

Claire G. Coleman is a writer from Western Australia. She identifies with the South Coast Noongar people. Her family are associated with the area around Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun.

Coleman grew up in a forestry settlement in the middle of a tree plantation where her dad worked, not far out of Perth. She wrote her black&write! fellowship-winning book Terra Nullius while travelling around Australia in a caravan. The Old Lie is her second novel.

Damien Shen is an Australian artist of Ngarrindjeri and Chinese bloodlines. He draws on both of these powerful cultural influences to create works of intense personal meaning.

In using his artistic talent he aims to open the eyes of viewers to new ways of seeing Australian identity and Aboriginal art. Shen pushes his practice across different mediums, constantly constructing and deconstructing the world around him.

Darryl Jones is a Professor of Ecology at Griffith University. He has been exploring how people interact with nature for many years, including conflicts and coexistence, but is particularly interested in the controversial topic of bird feeding.

David Pollock is a second-generation pastoralist from Wooleen Station in the Murchison region of Western Australia. He took over the 153,000-hectare property when he was 27 and was soon joined by his now wife Frances as they embarked on a quest to transform Wooleen into a sustainable grazing enterprise.

DOMINIC GUERRERA

DOBBY is a rapper, drummer, speaker and workshop facilitator. He proudly identifies as a Filipino and Aboriginal musician. A skilled music composer and the 2017 recipient for the bi-annual Peter Sculthorpe Fellowship, DOBBY released his self-titled EP in 2018. He has performed at BIGSOUND, The Plot Festival, Yabun Festival, corporate and academic functions, Koori Radio events and at numerous NAIDOC celebrations across Australia.

Dominic Guerrera is a Ngarrindjeri, Kaurna and Italian. He has worked 15 years in Aboriginal health, particularly Aboriginal sexual health. He is the co-host of the ASH Podcast, co-creator and facilitator of SXC Times and is a writer and poet.

Frank Dikötter is a historian best known for the People's Trilogy, a narrative history of China under Mao based on new archival material. His most recent book, entitled How to Be a Dictator, looks at the cult of personality in the 20th century through the careers of eight dictators.

Hannah Kent is the co-founder and deputy editor of Australian literary journal Kill Your Darlings and is completing her PhD at Flinders University. In 2011, she won the inaugural Writing Australia Unpublished Manuscript Award. Her prize-winning novels Burial Rites and The Good People have received international acclaim and been translated into over 25 languages.

Huo Yan is a writer of novels, short stories, screenplays and criticism. She began writing at the age of 13 and won her first literary prize at the age of 14. She is the author of eight books and her work has been published in magazines including Harvest, October and Beijing Literature. In 2013, she held the Rewi Alley Fellowship at the Michael King Writers Centre in Auckland and wrote Dry Milk.

Jono Lineen was born in Belfast. He spent almost 20 years traveling the world working as a forester, ski racer, mountain guide, humanitarian relief worker and writer. He is a curator at the National Museum of Australia.

She is currently undertaking a Masters in Creative Arts, researching First Peoples use of allegory for truth-telling in fiction.

Dr. Katherine Tamiko Arguile has a Masters in Post-war British Art from the Courtauld Institute and a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Adelaide. She is an arts journalist, writing for InDaily and The Advertiser, and is an author of prize-winning short stories. Her first novel, The Things She Owned, is to be published in 2020.

Laura Kroetsch is a reviewer, writer and longtime producer of literary events. She is a former Director of Adelaide Writers’ Week and is currently the Program Director of Dark & Dangerous Thoughts, an ideas festival that runs as part of the Dark Mofo in Tasmania. She is also the OzAsia Festival Advisor for JLF Adelaide.

Lok Fung is a poet and cultural critic. She is also the guest anchor of Radio Hong Kong’s performing arts programme. Her recent publications in Chinese include Flying Coffin, which received the 9th Biennial Award for Chinese Literature (Poetry) in 2007 and Butterfly of Forbidden Colors: The Artistic Image of Leslie Cheung, which received the Hong Kong Book Prize as well as the 2008 Best Book of the Year Award.

Malcolm Knox is the author of 21 books of fiction and nonfiction. He has published six novels, which have won and been shortlisted for many prizes in Australia and overseas. As a journalist, he has won two Walkley Awards, a Human Rights Commission Award and been runner-up for Australian Journalist of the Year.

Manisha Koirala is one of India’s leading film actors. Born in Nepal, Koirala made her Bollywood debut with Saudagar in 1991 and went on to establish herself in numerous films.

She took a break from acting in 2012 to return five years later. She promotes causes such as women’s rights, prevention of human trafficking and cancer awareness. Koirala was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012 and has been cancer-free since 2015.

Matthew Hooton is the author of the novels Typhoon Kingdom and Deloume Road, and has written short fiction and nonfiction for a range of newspapers, magazines and journals around the globe. He teaches creative writing at the University of Adelaide where his research and writing range topically from Korean history through to Jim Henson's Muppets and Canadian superhero narratives.

Melanie Cheng is an author and GP. Her debut short-story collection Australia Day won 2018’s Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Fiction and, two years earlier, the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an Unpublished Manuscript.

Michelle de Kretser is the author of The Rose Grower, the award-winning The Hamilton Case and The Lost Dog. Her novel, Questions of Travel, received 14 honours, including the 2013 Miles Franklin Literary Award. Her most recent novel, Life to Come, won the Christina Stead Prize for Fiction and the Miles Franklin Literary Award, making de Kretser only the third woman to win Australia’s most prestigious literary award more than once.

Namita Gokhale is a writer, publisher and festival director. She has written 18 books, including nine works of fiction. Gokhale is a founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival and of Mountain Echoes, the Bhutan Literature Festival. She is also one of the founding directors of Yatra Books, a publishing house specialising in translation.

Musa created a one-man play, Since Ali Died, based on his album of the same name.

Roy works closely with various industry bodies on policy issues within the cultural space in India.

Shameem Black is a Fellow in gender, media and cultural studies at the Australian National University. Jaipur Literature Festival January 23 - 27, 2020 Diggi Palace, Jaipur, India Described as the ‘greatest literary show on Earth’, the Jaipur Literature Festival is a sumptuous feast of ideas.

The past decade has seen it transform into a global literary phenomenon having hosted nearly 2000 speakers and welcoming over a million book lovers from across India and the globe.

Our core values remain unchanged: to serve as a democratic, non-aligned platform offering free and fair access.

Every year, the Festival brings together a diverse mix of the world’s greatest writers, thinkers, humanitarians, politicians, business leaders, sports people and entertainers on one stage to champion the freedom to express and engage in thoughtful debate and dialogue.

Writers and Festival Directors Namita Gokhale and William Dalrymple, alongside producer Teamwork Arts, invite speakers to take part in the five-day programme set against the backdrop of Rajasthan’s stunning cultural heritage and the Diggi Palace in the state capital Jaipur.

Past speakers have ranged from Nobel Laureates J.M. Coetzee, Orhan Pamuk and Muhammad Yunus, Man Booker Prize winners Ben Okri, Margaret Atwood and Paul Beatty, Sahitya Akademi winners Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, M.T. Vasudevan Nair as well as the late Girish Karnad, Mahasweta Devi and U.R. Ananthamurthy along with literary superstars 44

including Amish Tripathi, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Vikram Seth. An annual event that goes beyond literature, the Festival has also hosted Amartya Sen, Amitabh Bachchan, the late A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Fry, Thomas Piketty and former president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai.

The Jaipur Literature Festival is a flagship event of Teamwork Arts, which produces it along with over 25 highly acclaimed performing arts, visual arts and literary festivals across more than 40 cities globally.
