Sustainability

We work every day to achieve the European Union's decarbonisation targets and promote an intermodal transport network to deliver goods in a more sustainable manner.

All the production factors in our industrial plan tend to activate a virtuous network of investments with social value (because they revitalise the territory), environmental value (taking trucks off eliminates associated CO2) and economic value (because this generates more value for the system).

When it comes to sustainability, rail transport is the only likely key to achieving the required EU targets. Suffice it to say that, if all trucks were to be electric in 2050, rail transport would still be 7 times more sustainable with regard to energy consumption, and thus to the emissions due to its production.

In 2022, thanks to our sustainable integrated logistics model, we managed to save the environment 1.8 million tonnes of CO2. We must also work to prevent our roads from becoming increasingly congested in the future, as forecasts speak of an unsustainable scenario of 1 million more lorries on European roads in the coming years.

It should be noted that a single train takes as many as 30 lorries off the road, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas pollutants and ensuring safe movement not only of goods, but also of all the people who travel by car every day.

Our industrial plan includes investments dedicated to digitisation, including through innovative projects

We are implementing SmartTrain, i.e. on-board solutions installed on the wagons that, thanks to wireless communication systems, interact with the driver and ground personnel, thus enabling the automation of operational procedures related to wagon management.

We are approaching the DAC - Digital Automatic Coupling - technology system which involves coupling the wagons in an automatic and smart manner.

We are increasingly attentive to the needs of our customers by progressively releasing an innovative interface to speed up the exchange of information and data enabling the efficient management of goods from the producer to the end customer.

We also bring innovation into the hubs, for increasingly efficient and multimodal logistics.

Internationalisation

We are present in 11 countries, supporting traffic to and from Italy also for the benefit of import and export services in favour of Made in Italy.

The Logistics Business Unit of the FS Italiane Group puts itself forward as a system operator aiming to expand the network through partnerships and collaborations with the objective of becoming the European integrated logistics player.

Our field of action is not limited, and cannot be limited, to national borders, but extends to the entire European continent.

We have embarked on a path of growth to augment the volume of goods transported by rail thanks to increasingly effective connections to the national network and the European rail corridors, providing a competitive alternative to road transport throughout Europe.

Mercitalia Logistics

Mercitalia Logistics is the operational subholding of the Logistics Business Unit.

Mercitalia Logistics is the operational sub-holding of the FS Group. It directly controls the other companies part of the Logistics Business Unit, defining their strategy and coordination.

Mercitalia Logistics is also active in the logistics sector through the development of real estate assets such as warehouses and terminals (through the BU Asset Management and Development BU) and offering integrated door-to-door logistics activities to large industrial groups (through the Omnia Express and Transport and Multimodal Logistics BUs).

Mercitalia Rail

The leading freight railway company in Italy and one of the most important operators in Europe.

Mercitalia Rail is the leading freight railway company in Italy and one of the most important operators in Europe.

It offers a complete range of rail solutions by specialising in market sectors through its Conventional and Intermodal Transport Business Units.

It boasts an important fleet of locomotives (over 270 electric and approximately 80 diesel) and wagons (approximately 12,000), specialised by type of goods transported).

With 1,500 trains/week, the company ensures connections between the main ports, interports, terminals, industrial junctions, throughout the country and on international corridors where it operates directly or in partnership with other operators.

TX Logistik

Dedicated to the International Business Development of the Logistics Business Unit.

TX Logistik is a railway company and Intermodal Operator based in Germany, offering rail freight transport solutions on the main trans-European corridors to and from Italy.

It operates around 22,000 trains/year thanks to a fleet of approximately 70 locomotives and over 1,000 wagons.

It is one of the leading railway companies in Germany and operates in 11 different European countries.

Mercitalia Intermodal

The largest combined road/rail transport operator in Italy and the third largest in Europe.

Mercitalia Intermodal is an intermodal operator specialising in unaccompanied combined transport services, both by land and sea, carried out in Italy and Europe.

The company owns a fleet of wagons dedicated to combined transport consisting of around 1,600 wagons (2,500 platforms), used in both national and international traffic, of which 75% are owned and 25% leased.

MII operates over 10,000 international and over 4,000 domestic trains annually.

Mercitalia Shuting & Terminal

The first shunting operator in Italy and one of the largest inland terminal operators in Italy.

Mercitalia Shunting & Terminals is the Mercitalia Group company specialising in the management of rail shunting in and out of ports and terminals in Italy, as well as between passenger stations and train maintenance workshops. It also manages several railway terminals through integrated handling, road terminalisation, maintenance and ground services (verification).

It is based in Genoa and employs over 1,000 people throughout Italy; 90 shunting yards; over 200 diesel locomotives.

Teralp

Developer of Rail Freight Terminals in Italy.

Terminal Alptransit (Teralp) has the task of equipping the country's most productive economic areas with new technologically advanced in-land terminals capable of meeting the future demand for long-distance freight transport.

Initially focused on the construction of the new terminals in Milan and Brescia, which will allow optimal management of the traffic increases generated by the opening of the Gotthard and Monte Ceneri railway tunnels.

Bluferries operates ferry services for wheeled vehicles and passengers on the Strait of Messina.

Blueferries provides efficient, reliable, innovative and high-quality services for the transport of goods and passengers, pursuing a constant process of identifying the needs and expectations of its customers.
