Fly Fishing Summer in Fernie has many start dates but for angling enthusiasts, June 15th is the one that matters. Fly fishing season opens for the Elk River and its tributaries, heralding in at least four months of what is widely regarded as some of the best dry-fly summer fishing in North America. From the Petain Glacier on the peaks of the Southern Rocky Mountains, ancient meltwater tumbles into the tranquil Elk Lakes and surrounding meadows to be filtered and refined before passing into the upper reaches of the Elk River. in the earlier part of the season due to high run-off but quickly settles to a clarity rarely found in glacial waterways; each year brings new logjams and holes to discover, making it a popular river for local guides and enthusiasts to explore as the season opens. The entire river had


Elk river fishing a full facelift in 2013 when spring floods uprooted trees, shaved embankments, and tossed loose rocks around; over the past 4 years the river has resettled and new passages formed. As each season progresses the river becomes a photographer’s dream with sparkling tones of emerald, amber, and charcoal flashing through the glassy water and sandy patches dazzling in shades of aqua. The beauty and tranquility of the Elk River belie its accessibility. From the Elk Lakes, a gravel forest service road parallels the river as it descends towards Elkford then Hwy 43 follows the route of the river to Sparwood. Access on this stretch is best for walk and wade due to some hazardous logjams. Look for good spots around the bridges and town sites offering easier access. The river gains momentum where it meets the popular Michel Creek and flows into the Elk Valley. From the Olsen Pit just downstream of Sparwood, a series of launch options and several manageable sections make this portion of the river ideal for a day of drifting. At least four full day drifts are available from the Pit to the Elko Dam, depending on which access points are used. Below the dam, access is limited to a few points along the steep canyon and the excellent floating and wading around the mouth of the river where it spills into Lake Koocanusa. Adventurous whitewater anglers are sometimes seen cresting the

rapids of the upper canyon alongside adventure kayakers and rafters but this section is strictly for very experienced paddlers. There are two main catches on the Elk River; Pure Strain Westslope Cutthroat Trout which vary from 8-18 inches and are found along the full length of the river. The cold water and warm air provide the perfect environment to keep these active fish close to the surface snapping at the abundant insect life and equally at your flies. This beautiful species—a member of the salmon family—gets its name from the pink, red, or orange markings on the throat. Monster Bull Trout are the prize of the river; residents above the dam run 2030 inches while the teeming population below the dam comfortably exceed 30 inches. As their name suggests, the bullies are fighters and will give you and your tackle—and sometimes even smaller fish already on the hook—a good run. Also in the lower Elk, Cutt-bows—a hybrid of native Cutthroats and Kootenay River Rainbow Trout—can be found in good numbers. These fish have many of the traits and colouring of both the cutthroat and rainbow, and can often be seen nibbling at the surface like a cuttie or leaping like a bow. Although they can be found year-round, the Rocky Mountain Whitefish are a more popular catch in the winter. fernierealestate.com

This gentle freestone river is rife with wildlife and riparian activity. Herons, deer, hummingbirds, and the stately elk that gives its name to the river can all be spotted regularly. Rarer sightings include black bears, beavers, martens, painted turtles, and even the occasional grizzly. It’s always wise to carry bear spray although confrontations are extremely unusual. “The streams of the Elk Valley are like a fly fishing dream world for me. Cutthroat trout that gobble dry-flies off the surface in almost any weather. Huge Bull Trout that hammer streamers in the depths of most pools. Combine this with gin-clear mountain water and spectacular Rocky Mountain scenery and it is indeed fly fishing heaven. There is such an enormous amount of water to see that you can fish and explore regularly for 20 years and not see all that the valley has to offer.” ~ Local fly fishing enthusiast Mike McPhee

For outdoor enthusiasts, the region has many options for camping, water activities, biking, hiking and fishing. Below we’ve identified some of our favourite South Country destinations and activities in the region:


south country Elko – The first stop when driving from Fernie heading west. You’ll find some great spring hiking and biking conditions in the region as well as the widely popular Silver Springs – a trio of crystal clear lakes, nestled in the mountains. For those brave enough, the water is cooler but refreshing on a hot summer’s day. Make sure to finish your day at the 3&93 Dairy Bar. This summer institution is open seasonally and serves ice cream, burgers, fries, beverages and more. Baynes Lake – 15 minutes from Elko is the community of Baynes Lake, located only a few steps from Lake Koocanusa and home to a cluster of smaller lakes including Surveyors Lake (located in the Kikoman Creek Provincial Park). The lake is family friendly with sandy beaches and picnic recreation areas. SUP rentals are available along with paddle boats and kayaks to navigate your way around the lake. The lake is home to the western painted turtle and visitors are asked not to disturb the wildlife. During the summer the Baynes Lake Farmers Market is one of the main attractions for the community. Running every Saturday from mid-June to September the market offers fresh fruit and vegetables, artisan goods and handcrafted items. Lake Koocanusa – Next on the list is Lake Koocanusa, a recreational haven for locals and visitors to the region. The reservoir was formed by the

Other offerings in the region include, Will-OBend Golf and RV Park, which is often one of the first golf courses in the area to open and the Jaffray Pub and Sunrise Grill – offering great pub fare with patio seating and open 7 days a week.
