— Introduction — Getting Married in Fernie, BC B Y K R I S TA T U R C A S S O

With each year, planning a wedding in Fernie, BC and the surrounding area has grown in popularity, even with the challenges we have faced the last two years. Couples have adapted to the restrictions, as they have fluctuated and evolved, by focusing on what works and what is important to them. We have seen many elopements, intimate celebrations with family or a group of friends, and also larger outdoor gatherings for the more traditional affair. What has also grown is the wedding season! Each season in the Elk Valley has something unique to offer a newly engaged couple and the guests they plan to host. Whether you are looking for the promise and greenery of spring, the lush and hot days of summer, the mosaic of colours in fall, or the classic white appeal of a winter wonderland, it is all available right here, in this picturesque little mountain town.

And that’s just the outdoor setting. Each and every year, more is on offer when it comes to hosting weddings of all sizes and styles. With a growing number of people choosing this southeast corner of BC, it’s not surprising that we have seen numerous businesses created, grow or evolve to accommodate the increase in demand. 4

— Wedding Story — Haley and Evan P H OTO G R A P H E R MCKENZIE JESPERSEN mckenziejespersen.com

Originally from Alberta, Evan from Calgary and Haley High River, they both grew up ski racing - Evan with the Fernie Alpine Ski Team and Haley originally at Castle Mountain, joining the Fernie ski team in high school. “Evan and I became fast friends, which obviously blossomed into more over time,” Haley says. Over the last 10 years or so, Haley and Evan have lived in Ontario, Calgary, and Vancouver always making time to return to Fernie for skiing and biking adventures with friends and family.

“In recent years, both of our parents moved to Fernie, and we have siblings, cousins, and aunts and uncles in the area. With our love for the mountains and Fernie culture, along with a desire to be close to our families, we decided to follow suit and move to Fernie earlier this year!”

Fernie was always where the couple had planned to get married, for many reasons but most importantly because of its significance of where they originally met and got to know one another. They loved the idea of getting married in a place they had a strong connection to, “and the beauty of the surrounding area made it an easy decision,” Haley adds. Additionally, they recognized what a fantastic place Fernie is to 6

used marriage commissioner Lynn Rogers, booked Fernie Catering Co. to prepare their menu, and had DJ Goff keep people on their feet into the evening.

visit so were excited to have the opportunity to host their friends and family visiting from out of town. Haley and Evan utilized many of Fernie’s boutique and unique businesses to help execute their wedding. They worked with wedding planner Lush Kootenay, booked the Elk View Lodge for their celebration, had their floral arrangements done by Stemhouse Floral Studio, hair and makeup done by No.3 Salon,

Instead of focusing on a style and theme, Haley and Evan focused on how they wanted the day to feel, “and everything grew from there. I made a haphazard mood board and had a pretty unconstrained colour pallet - no regrets! With all this in hand, I picked out things that I liked and everything fell into place. We splurged a bit on a few things and thrifted others. Looking back, I would say our wedding had a romantic, earthy, elegant, and intimate vibe (with a side of larch) - and we loved every part of it!” Haley says. We love this approach, and think it worked out beautifully! Congratulations, Haley and Evan and welcome to Fernie!

Q&A What is your favourite moment of your wedding day?

What advice would you give other couples planning their own wedding?

What were some of the unique elements of your day?

Haley: I have many favourite moments, but overall, having our closest friends and family celebrate with us was very special - you could really feel the love in the room! We’ve been together for many years, so we have a lot of amazing relationships, both individually and as a couple. The entire day was filled with great conversations, laughs, hugs, and happy tears, and we have so many wonderful memories.

Take time to plan out the things that really matter to you and then don’t sweat the small stuff on things that don’t. We tried to focus our energy on making the day a fun and memorable experience that reflected who we are as individuals and a couple, and less on making everything perfect. We tried to remind ourselves of this whenever we got overwhelmed with planning! Also, if friends and family offer to help, take them up on it. Many hands make light work - a big thank you to everyone who helped us!

We somehow managed to nail the timing with the beautiful fall colours, particularly the larch trees! They made for spectacular views and photos. The weather on our wedding day was ‘mixed’ to say the least, but the stormy skies parted in the evening made for the most spectacular, dramatic sunset. We also included many of our friends and family in various parts of the wedding ceremony and reception and it was very special to have our loved ones play a role in the day. A memorable example was having our niece (who wasn’t able to walk on her own yet) push a wagon down the aisle as our flower girl - we are biased, but think it was the cutest wedding feature possible.

Evan: The ceremony - having all our close friends and family in a beautiful room with a mountain backdrop behind us as we said our vows was magical.

— Wedding Story — Madison and Craig P H OTO G R A P H E R D AV I D A N D K A T I E P H OTO G R A P H Y davidandkatiephoto.com Madison and Craig were both born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, “and were lucky enough to find friendship within each other in our late teens in the place we call home,” Madison tells us. “After growing up and becoming the independent people we are today, we slid easily and comfortably back into each other’s lives as adults drawn to our ability to seek adventure and fun as well as our mutual desire for friendship, loyalty and love. Since cementing ourselves as a couple, we have not stopped seeking fun and adventure wherever we can find it.” While the couple admit to loving Sudbury ‘to their core’ they also continue to feel the pull back to the mountains, landscape and people in western Canada. “I have travelled out west a few times on my own, having family that live in southern Alberta, and I knew the moment I first laid eyes on Fernie, British Columbia that I was stumbling onto a very special place. Fernie was so special in my heart that when Craig and I took our first trip together out west, he knew that it was a place we had to visit based on all my rambling stories of its beauty,” Madison says.

It comes to no surprise then that Madison and Craig decided to elope and get married in Fernie to start their newest adventure, “doing it on our own terms all by ourselves. We deeply love our family and friends but having

Using that as their ‘theme’ they recognized that the scenery here does most of the work in making the day so spectacular. Madison and Craig chose Fernie Alpine Resort’s Elk Top Ceremony site based on the many photos their photographer, David & Katie posted on social media. “Just stunning weddings with breathtaking views of these precious mountains.”

a ceremony to ourselves with our first meal and night as a married couple felt so magical.” Sounds perfect to us!

They wanted the day to feel like the rest of their story - fun, comfortable, easy and unique.

Having connected with the ‘friendly and helpful staff at Fernie Alpine Resort - shout out to Stacey Charest,’ and booked David & Katie, they feel as though everything else fell into place. ET Hair Salon for Madison’s hair, Stemhouse Floral Studio for a last-minute bouquet that was exactly what Madison had dreamed of. “And we loved sneakily getting ready together in our Lizard Creek Lodge suite while trying to avoid getting a sneak peek before heading to the altar to be united by the lovely Lynn Rogers who officiated the 9

ceremony so perfectly.” They completed the experience with a hike to Matheson Falls, stop at FBC to fulfill their brewery tradition, and in the evening a private dinner at Cirque. We have a feeling this story might inspire many couples to consider eloping! What a magical day, congratulations Madison and Craig.

One of my favourite moments of the day was our first reveal photos. There was so much build up to finally, secretly getting married and not having shown anyone the details. I’ll never forget the feeling of walking up to Craig and getting a good nervous and excited laugh out of seeing each other as bride and groom for the first time - so many years in the making, no pressure! What advice would you give other couples planning their own wedding?

To remember what the day is about, it’s a beginning - not an end point. The day is ultimately about you as a couple continuing your journey together and embracing your love in a next and exciting context whatever that looks like for you. It is easy

to get lost in the details and the pieces that you may not remember down the road. Stop and ask yourself, what do we really want this day to feel like? What do we want to remember in 10, 20, 30 plus years?

What were some of the unique elements of your day? The most unique and fun element to our wedding was that we chose a traditional elopement: it was just the two of us. David & Katie pulled double duty by acting as our witnesses and our photographers. We got married on a Wednesday in August - we chose mid-week to allow for bigger weddings to book the weekend which added to a bit of the whimsy of the day. It was so awesome running around taking photos in multiple locations - even stopping to grab a beer in between at Fernie Brewing Company.

— Wedding Story — Brooke and Kody P H OTO G R A P H E R TA R A H I L L STUDIOS tarahillstudios.com

Brooke and Kody are from Edson, Alberta and have known one another since high school. Both have a natural connection to the outdoors and living close to Jasper National Park allows them to regularly access nature. “We love travelling and, since large-scale travel isn’t always easy to do, we spend a lot of time adventuring around our area,” Brooke says. When the couple began planning their wedding, they knew mountains would play an important role. They researched a lot of mountain wedding locations and became frustrated with pricing and availability.

“We actually kind of just stumbled upon Fernie as a wedding location; we had both been looking for additional options when we came across the Fernie Wedding Guide. After looking into Fernie venues more, we felt it was the perfect place! It’s about half-way for both sides of our families and Kody actually has some family that lives in the area, which made it even more perfect!” Brooke and Kody’s entire wedding took place at the Fernie Alpine Resort. They stayed at the Lizard Creek Lodge, hosted their ceremony at the stunning Elk Top Platform, “riding up and down the chairlift made the day even more unique,” they share. “Some of our guests were even visited by a cow moose and her calf right before the ceremony started!”

Brooke did her own hair and makeup and was surprised the morning of with several bouquets of flowers from the Green Petal by Kody. Lynn Rogers was the marriage officiant, and they chose Tara Hill as their photographer. “She was fun, silly, chill, but also so professional. We are in love with the photos she took of our wedding and we are so grateful to have them forever,” Brooke says. The reception was held at the legendary Griz Bar.

“We chose this venue because it had a laidback feel and we really just wanted a fun, relaxed atmosphere for our wedding of 60 guests. It was perfect! The food was delicious, the staff serving us were fun and professional, and we had an awesome dance party at the end of the night. Because of COVID, we ended up having

Q&A What is your favourite moment of your wedding day? Picking a favourite moment from our wedding day is really hard - the whole day was amazing! We would have to say that the chairlift down from the ceremony was one of our favourite moments because we finally had some time to sit together after the craziness of the morning and let it sink in that we were finally husband and wife. What advice would you give other couples planning their own wedding?

There are absolutely going to be bumps in the road. Whether these hurdles come while planning, the week before the actual wedding day, or the day of, the most important thing is that you’re going to be marrying your best friend and love of your life. The other stuff doesn’t really matter in the end. And soak up every minute of it! Take time to enjoy the little moments, because the day goes by so quickly and then it’s just a memory. What were some of the unique elements of your day? our dance floor outside on the deck, which I would highly recommend doing even in nonCOVID times. It was fun and gave everyone a chance to cool off and get some fresh air. Jim Paul DJ’ed our reception and he did a fantastic job - everyone had a great time and he played awesome music for a great party!”

Such a great idea – why haven’t we ever thought of that! Sounds like such a fun and perfect celebration, congratulations to you, Brooke and Kody.

The most unique element of our day included riding the chairlift up to and down from the ceremony site. We also made a point of incorporating some more personal touches and family heirlooms into our day to make it even more personal and special.

— Wedding Tips — Wedding Floral Dos and Dont’s B Y K AT Y L N C O R A K

It’s no secret that planning a wedding can at times be equally as stressful as it is exciting. Add the unpredictability of a worldwide pandemic on top of things, and it seems like everyone in the wedding industry has had to become experts in pivoting.

As we enter the 2022 wedding season and we seem to be finding a new sense of normal, we can feel the excitement building again for couples whom have put off having their dream wedding, perhaps multiple times.

Entering the new year and this new wedding season, we put together list of Dos and Don’ts when it comes to your wedding florals, as well as the latest trends you can expect to see in 2022. • DO come to your consultation prepared with an idea of your wedding party numbers, ceremony and reception decorations, and photo inspiration (Pinterest Boards are a great place to start) of your dream florals.

• DON’T worry if you don’t know exactly what type of flowers you want. Your florist will be able to suggest seasonal blooms that will work well with your overall colour pallet and style of wedding, whether that be rustic, boho, classic, etc.

• DO remember your guests when deciding on centrepieces/table arrangements. Ensure that your guests can properly converse throughout the evening and that

their view of the wedding party is not obstructed by florals. It is also important to make sure that there is enough space on the tables for plates, glassware, cutlery, etc. Let your florist know the size of your tables and discuss measurements with them.

• DON’T be afraid to talk budget in your initial consultation, it is important for your

florist to know if you have a budget in mind. This will allow your florist to source the best options for you and be able to suggest different florals and foliage that will fit within your budget and compliment your style.

• DO remember to have fun! This is your special day and we are here to help make your vision come to life!

2022 Trends Here are a few of our favourite floral designs that are trending for 2022.

Sunset Colours: Sunset colours are no longer just for Autumn weddings. Many couples are wanting to bring a splash of colour into their wedding without going too bright. This is where we are starting to see sunset colours burst into every season, as they boast deep, rich colours to compliment every style of wedding.

Dried Bouquets: We are starting to see an increase in dried florals being used in bridal bouquets; moreover, entire bouquets constructed of dried florals. Dried bouquets are great for travelling with and are popular for couples wanting to elope but haven’t decided on a date.

Monochrome: Monochromatic themes are starting to have a big impact on wedding florals, where the interest comes from different textures, sizes, and types of flowers and foliage in the same tones. Traditionally this has been done for years with the classic white bridal bouquet, but in 2022 we are

Ground Ceremony Arrangements: Although we can’t see the arch ever being unpopular, couples have started to think of different ways to add framing during the ceremony. One of the most popular options are ground arrangements, usually in the form

At the end of the day, despite what’s trending, it is important to remain true to yourselves and decide on florals to compliment you and your special day!

— Wedding Tips — Unique Ideas to Set Your Wedding Apart BY MOUNTAIN AIR EVENTS Planning a wedding can be a lot of work. There are so many small, but important details that need to be considered for your big day. As wedding season rolls around, the weddings you’re invited to might feel like the same night, over and over again. One question that probably comes to mind is, “how can I set my wedding apart from all the rest?” Here are a few insider tips to help you make your big day one that everyone will remember: Flowers Let’s be honest, bathroom and buffet table décor are not the first thing that pops in your head when planning for your big day. This little step is such a nice touch to tie every aspect of your wedding together. Even when a guest must slip away from the dance floor to use the bathroom, they’ll be reminded of where they are. Guest Book and Selfies A guest book is such a nice way to remember your special day and everyone who attended. Why not spice it up with photos to really capture the moment? Consider putting a Polaroid camera beside it and have your guests take a photo to add to the book. Then you can relive the day each time you look back on it.

Signature Cocktail The bar is usually a big component to consider in the planning process. Everyone enjoys a vodka cranberry, but instead of just offering the basics, make the bar a bit more fun by offering a unique signature cocktail. Hire bar staff that can craft a cocktail inspired by you and offer it to your guests upon arrival. Think of your favourite cocktail and add a fun twist to it to help commemorate your special day.

Creative Playlist Pull everyone out to the dance floor with some classic good beats before flipping the script on the same old boring playlist. Talk to your DJ before your big day and request specific songs you love to be incorporated. Keep guests on their toes (or rather in their dancing shoes) by giving them the unexpected with new fun and interesting upbeat music. Why not add a salsa inspired song after some Lionel Richie and keep the party going “All Night Long”.

TARA HILL STUDIOS

Save the Dates “Wait, is their wedding this Saturday or next?” Let’s face it, we are all busy and sometimes even forgetful. Put a new spin on Save the Dates cards by using unconventional materials; coffee mugs, a set of coasters, bottle openers, or a passport holder for destination weddings are just a few fun ideas to keep your wedding unique even before the day. To sum it up, our biggest advice is don’t be afraid to shy away from “tradition” with a few easy and fun twists!

— Wedding Tips — Let Them Eat Cake BY AMY CARDOZO

Whether your wedding cake is at the top or bottom of your “to do” list, these tips from cake expert Amy Cardozo will help to ensure you have a cake that best represents you on your special day. • Choose your cake design after you’ve made your big decisions. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a bride change their design months later after they’ve purchased their dress or invitations.

• Spend some time surfing social media, Pinterest and Google, and bring the pictures of your favourites to your cake designer and have them help you mix them up to create an original design that is uniquely you!

• Talk to your cake designer about your budget. Be honest about it! Letting your designer know means they can work with you on ways to incorporate your favourite ideas in realistic and affordable ways. A cascade of gumpaste flowers can translate very nicely into one larger statement piece.

• Portions determine cake size. Not the other way around. The number of people you need to serve is more important than how many tiers you think your cake should have. If your numbers are low and you envision a five-tier cake, you can make it up with dummy tiers but keep in mind, they aren’t free.

• Do a tasting consultation! This is a great time to get your groom involved. The last thing you want is a dried out cake! It needs to taste AND look good or it’s not worth your time. • Choose a flavour that you want. This is your wedding. Don’t worry about what will be more popular, or be afraid to choose a non-traditional flavour such as chocolate mint, piña colada, or chocolate chip cookie dough!

• Make sure you like the cake designer’s style. Buttercream vs. fondant is an important decision. Some designers are comfortable working with both mediums.

AMY CARDOZO PHOTO

Check their portfolio to ensure their style matches the cake you have in mind.

• Put some thought into your cake table. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made a gorgeous cake for a bridal couple only to get to the venue to find the table cloth is wrinkly and the background includes things such as electrical wires, door frames, chairs, or even a fire extinguisher. Avoid photo regrets and ensure your tablecloth is ironed and use a simple fabric backdrop to hide things you don’t want to see in photos with you and your beautiful cake later on.
