A Wedding Story ASHLEY AND

ROB Photographer: Kyle Hamilton Photography Kylehamiltonphotography.com

Ashley and Rob McKay were married in Fernie on a beautiful summer day in the summer of 2016. The couple first came to Fernie shortly after they met, and admit that they quickly fell in love with our town. Just a year later, they purchased a condo here and Fernie became a weekend getaway from their home in Calgary.

When they became engaged, it was an easy decision on location. “It seemed only fitting that we bring our friends and family to Fernie for our big day,” Ashley says. And once location was decided, they locked in a date with Island Lake Lodge. The ceremony took place at the beautiful “I Dew” Point, overlooking the lake with the dramatic peaks of the Lizard Range beyond. Ashley and Rob were going for a simple but

elegant theme, with some rustic décor to match Island Lake’s mountain feel. They added a lot of greenery with their flower arrangements, and Ashley says she kept her dress in line with the theme through simple lace and no train. “It made it easy to walk around on top of the mountains for photos,” she adds. The couple were after some iconic mountain top photos, and photographer Kyle Hamilton delivered with the help of Ascent Helicopters.

Ashley went with Sparrow for Hair for the bridal party, and 901 Fernie for makeup and spa treatments. As they both follow a Paleo diet they asked Ashley’s sister to make a chocolate and orange cake and cupcakes that were a hit. Green Petal provided all of the flower arrangements, and of course Island

Lake the catering. “The food was outstanding,” Ashley adds.

Ashley and Rob welcomed 85 people to their wedding celebrations, many whom came early to enjoy all that Fernie has to offer. “Our families are mostly from Newfoundland and Ontario, so the mountains were definitely the highlight for most people,” they say. The guests spent their extra time hiking the many trails available here, exploring the downtown area to shop and trying out the restaurants and cafés. Some even took to the skies with a helicopter tour to get the full view of the valley. The wedding and time spent with close family and friends was a special time for Ashley and Rob, and they were happy with their choice of Fernie. 7

Q&A WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GET MARRIED IN FERNIE? We first came to Fernie shortly after we started dating and quickly fell in love with the place! It was only fitting to bring our family and friends to Fernie to celebrate our big day!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT OF YOUR WEDDING DAY? Exchanging our vows and becoming husband and wife in front of our closest family and friends, surrounded by mountains. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THOSE PLANNING THEIR OWN WEDDING DAY? Two things come to mind:

Pick your dream location and make sure that they know how to execute weddings. Island

Lake Lodge hosts many weddings every year and have perfected and simplified everything for the couple.

Spend very little time on Pinterest! It is too easy to become overwhelmed by all of the new trends and “must dos”… figure out what is really important to you as a couple and focus on making that happen! WHAT WERE SOME UNIQUE ELEMENTS TO YOUR WEDDING THAT REALLY STAND OUT - THINGS YOU TRIED TO DO DIFFERENTLY? We decided to do a first look and get our pictures taken prior to the ceremony. I would highly recommend it. First it allows the couple to really have an intimate moment alone and second we were able to then spend more time with our guests at cocktail hour, which was very important to us. 9

A Wedding Story MELISSA AND

SIMON Photographer: Red Flannel Photography Redflannelphotography.com

Melissa Rotella was born in Fernie, BC and has fond memories of growing up here. With her family still living in Fernie, and it so close to her heart it was not a difficult decision for her and her fiancé Simon to choose it as their wedding destination. Even though the couple resides in Auckland, New Zealand. They choose the Fernie Seniors Centre for both the ceremony and reception with 80 guests, and hired Magical Transformations (the dynamic duo of Susan Teslak and Donna Lee Clusiault) to decorate the space. “This worked great for us, as it was a destination wedding and we couldn’t bring decorations with us,” Melissa says. They gave them a rough outline of what they were after, and let them have creative license. The idea was for the scenery to be the “décor” and with

Susan and Donna Lee’s guidance they went with a winter theme with hints of coppers and greens, natural wood and soft lighting. “The result was much better than we could have every done on our own, we were very pleased,” she adds.

the beautiful historic buildings of the City Hall and Courthouse. “It was a beautiful sunny winter’s day, the sun was filtering onto us through the windows and we were able to look up at the mountains during the ceremony,” Melissa remembers.

The couple were married in front of the large windows at the Seniors Centre overlooking

For music, they went with DJ Jeff McRae. “He was given the difficult task of playing music for a wide variety of tastes, and he nailed it,” they say. He even surprised them with some old Italian classic polkas that had the older generations on the dance floor.

Melissa admits that as a mountain girl, she is not big on dressing up so chose a simple and elegant dress and avoided “poofs and frills.” She found the perfect dress at a local wedding dress shop near their home in Auckland. “It fit my personality and complimented our décor… and it fit in my carry-on suitcase!” she says. For hair and makeup, she went with No. 3 and once again, gave them creative license and loved the result.

Melissa and Simon chose Kristy Ingram to cater their event, whom they highly recommend. They went for buffet style dining and had many compliments on the food, the wedding cake, and the professional and friendly staff.

Their photographer was Randi of Red Flannel Photography, and they were very happy with the results. As they did not have a traditional wedding party they kept the focus of the wedding to family and had photos taken during the ceremony and with family members at the venue right after. They then left with Randi for an intimate photo session around Fernie as the sun was setting. “It was probably one of my favourite parts of our wedding. She captured our love and personalities in the photos, framed against the most amazing backdrops that she scouted out beforehand,” Melissa says. The majority of guests were local Fernie residents, but the few that travelled from afar were taken aback by the charm and beauty of Fernie. Simon’s parents are actually planning on coming back, “when it’s a little warmer.” Overall, Melissa and Simon say their wedding was a magical time and exactly what they were hoping for.

Q&A WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GET MARRIED IN FERNIE? It’s where I grew up and is a special place for me and Simon. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT OF YOUR WEDDING DAY? That’s a hard one, I’d have to say reciting our vows in front of our families with the sun streaming in through the windows, with the mountains covered in snow in the background.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THOSE PLANNING THEIR OWN WEDDING DAY? At the end of the day it’s all about you and your partner and your family sharing the happiest day of your life. Don’t get too caught up in the little things, they won’t be what matters when you look back.

WHAT WERE SOME UNIQUE ELEMENTS TO YOUR WEDDING THAT REALLY STAND OUT - THINGS YOU TRIED TO DO DIFFERENTLY? We didn’t have a wedding party which really helped bring the focus of the day to ‘us’ and our families and gave us more time to enjoy the moment. 11

A Wedding Story JAIME AND

MACIEK Photographer: Mark11 Photography Mark11.com

Jaime and Maciek have been spending time together as a couple in Fernie long before they were engaged, so when they were on the road to planning their wedding they admit that it was a ‘no brainer’ to choose Fernie as the location. Residing in Calgary, AB they are both outdoor enthusiasts and were excited to share this with 65 of their family members and closest friends. Many of the guests choose to come up the Wednesday prior to the wedding, which took play on a Saturday in August. The group enjoyed a lot of fly fishing, including one day on the Elk River on a float ride. They also took in some walking and wading on nearby creeks. Those not as keen on fishing took to the trails

for some of the iconic hikes at Island Lake Lodge, hit the Fernie Golf and Country Club or spent some time unwinding at the spa. Jaime and Maciek also enjoyed taking guests out on a circuit of their favourite restaurants that week – Nevados, the Curry Bowl and Loaf! “There is no shortage of amazing restaurants in Fernie,” they say.

To capture their personalities, of Maciek’s love for wildnerness fly fishing and Jaime’s appreciation for the luxurious city life (and slight obsession with Kate Spade and hot pink), the theme for the wedding was Rustic Elegance. Think Kate Spade meets the wilderness. They have fond memories of hiking and dining at Island Lake Lodge, and

knew it was the perfect location to pull this event off. “From the arrival dinner, to the farewell brunch, everything was top notch,” Jaime says.

They went with a close friend as a photographer, Mark Shannon of Mark11 Photography who is no stranger to Fernie. He took many unique and memorable shots while also capturing candid moments of family and friends throughout the day. With a smallersized wedding the event was personal and Jaime and Maciek felt they were able to spend time with everyone and enjoy every moment of their day. 13

beautiful, but of course our hearts were set on having the ceremony at ‘I Dew’ Point. Around noon, the clouds broke up, and the sun peaked out, and we had the most perfect weather. It wasn’t too hot, but just warm enough, and the light was perfect for photos. So that worked out very well. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THOSE PLANNING THEIR OWN WEDDING DAY? Don’t get caught up on trying to make everything perfect. It’s your special day, and it’s going to be great no matter what. Also, try to make the day a reflection of what you both love rather than attempting to please everyone else (which is always impossible anyway!)

WHAT WERE SOME UNIQUE ELEMENTS TO YOUR WEDDING THAT REALLY STAND OUT - THINGS YOU TRIED TO DO DIFFERENTLY? Having the wedding over a weekend at a somewhat remote location as Island Lake Lodge allowed everyone to bond in a very intimate atmosphere. This was both a function of the overall size but also the fact that almost everyone was staying at the lodge, so right from the arrival on Friday evening, everyone was mingling and getting to know each other.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GET MARRIED IN FERNIE? That was a no brainer for us. We love Fernie! We spend almost every summer weekend here, as we love the hiking, fly fishing, nearby beaches, and everything about it. Even before we got engaged, we knew that we would be getting married in Fernie. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT OF YOUR WEDDING DAY? Our good friend and awesome photographer, Mark Shannon (Mark11 Photography) set up an amazing reveal by the creek in Mount Fernie Provincial Park with just the two of us before the ceremony. It was an incredible moment seeing each other for the first time on the day of our wedding in a very intimate and beautiful setting.

We continued to take a few more shots by the creek. My husband, Maciek, who is an avid fly fisher, brought his fly rod for one of the shots, where he was going to pretend to fish. He

wasn’t pretending as he had a fly on the end of his line, and he managed to land a little Cutthroat during the shoot. The other highlight for us was the weather. The weather wasn’t great the day before, and the forecast was also not promising. We were ok with the fact that we might have to have the ceremony inside, which would have also been

We also had amazing help from very talented friends to craft some unique touches for the big day that reflected us – from a “survival pack” in the guests’ rooms when they arrived that contained snacks and goodies, to customized signs, a huge pink piñata heart for advice/good wishes, a candy bar, flip flops for tired dancing feet, makeup for touch ups in the bathroom, and about 100 lbs of sparkle that was added to decorations for the big day!

Wedding Tips HOW TO BUY A WEDDING DRESS by Louise Hilliard

Buying a wedding dress is not the same as shopping for a regular dress especially if you use a bridal store. Whether you know what you want or you have no idea there are several factors to consider that will make buying a dress more enjoyable and stress free.

Here are my top tips for shopping for your dream dress.

1. Timings At most bridal shops you are required to book an appointment so make sure to inquire for your desired date ahead of time especially if you have family/friends travelling in for the occasion.

Dresses are typically made to order, so you need to order a minimum of six months ahead of your wedding day. I recommend starting your dress search 12-18 months prior to your big day. Bridal shops take your measurements and match it to the closest size for that designer. Normally, they take the largest measurement (bust-waist-hip) and order the dress to that size. This means two things: you will require alterations at least to the hem, and if you have a large bust or pear body shape the dress will be too big on the top or bottom and will cost more to alter. I recommend factoring in three months

NICK NAULT PHOTOGRAPHY

for alterations, especially in peak wedding season (June-September). If you shop earlier than the 18 months be prepared to buy and store the dress, if you don’t order it the style may be discontinued and once it arrives most bridal stores do not have space to store and some charge for this service. If you shop under the nine-month mark be prepared to pay a rush fee to get it on time. Book your seamstress early! Wedding season is a busy time and you will be fighting for limited bookings especially in a small town. It will require several fittings and you also

Y

When attending the appointment wear appropriate underwear; nude is the best colour with traditional whites and ivories and a strapless bra is a good idea. Make sure you’re comfortable in your undergarments as the staff may have to assist you in getting the dresses on and off.

need to have your accessories such as shoes and underwear for the fittings.

2. Budget Have an idea of how much you want to spend and choose bridal shops to fit that budget. If you have a small budget find shops that have dresses starting at lower price points. Boutiques stock designer gowns which generally start at $2000, whereas bridal chains start at $500 and have more selection and price points.

Bring heels to give you an idea of how dresses look with shoes and wear your hair in a style similar to what you envision for your wedding. Go easy on the foundation as it can easily transfer to the sample dresses.

Remember that the dress is just the beginning. You need to factor in alterations, accessories and cleaning and storage after your big day. Alterations start at a minimum of $100 and go up to $500+. If you use the bridal store seamstress it will be more expensive (normally double) but if you use a private seamstress make sure they are reputable. Veils are very expensive and often an afterthought in most budgets. One way to bring costs down is to buy accessories somewhere other than the bridal shop.

NICK NAULT PHOTOGRAPHY

If you have fallen in love with a dress or designer that’s out of your price range, watch out for designer days that discounts for buying on that day. Sample dresses are another option but consider these factors: • Never buy a dress that is too small as it may not be feasible to take out and if it is, only by minimal amounts.

• Don’t buy anything more than two sizes too big, as when taken in you start to lose the line of the dress. Alterations will also be costly meaning the savings are not worth the sacrifices.

• If it is beaded proceed with caution. Check for missing beads or damage. If heavily beaded around the bust area, it is also nearly impossible to alter meaning the only way to fix is to pad out the cups.

3. Be prepared Once you’ve booked your appointment and set the budget, it’s time for the fun part! Research different styles and get an idea for what you like. Look into the designers showcased at the bridal store beforehand and have images ready to show the consultant.

4. Entourage Consider carefully who you take to your bridal appointments. It is very rare to get consensus from a large crowd and it might cause you to second guess yourself. Take a couple of people whose opinions you trust and no one who is strong willed. At the end of the day it is your wedding and you have to decide which dress is right for you.

Be open to trying on different styles. It can help rule out what you don’t like, and perhaps surprise you. You may not know what you are after but you do know your own style and tastes and the most important thing is to find the dress that makes you happy, feel beautiful and that you won’t want to take off!

Wedding Tips “I DO’S” FOR GREAT WEDDING HAIR by Sarah LeNeveu “How should I cut and style my hair for the wedding?” “Would this style look good on me?” “When and how should I colour it?”

“Will my up-do last the whole day?”

These are all great questions, and questions that brides ask regularly.

My best advice for brides is, don’t do anything too different to your hair before the wedding! Stick with your hair routine and save the big change for after the wedding. Making a big style change before your wedding can render added stress (and expense to reverse that change if necessary). Save the big change for a later date. A trim and/or a colour touch up a week or so before your day with your regular stylist along with a trial up-do will help avoid unwanted stresses and prepare you and your stylist for a smooth hairstyle the day of. Over the years, I have found brides are happiest and least stressed when they have met with their stylist before the wedding. Meeting the stylist and having a trial allows the bride and stylist to build a relationship. It helps answer the big question “Would this style look good on me?” and allows the bride to relax, knowing there won’t be any unwanted

6:8 PHOTOGRAPHY

surprises. Sometimes it isn‘t possible to meet your stylist before the wedding. In these circumstances I recommend a phone call or email communication between you and your stylist. Photos can be sent and recommendations can be made which will help the stylist prepare for what you are looking for.

“Will my up-do last for the whole wedding day?” This is another great question and another good reason to have a trial with your stylist before the wedding. While I can’t guarantee it will, I can make suggestions to help it stay. The night before your big day wash and blow-dry your hair with a light styling product, such as mousse. Wear a button down shirt to your hair appointment so you don’t have to pull a shirt over your freshly styled hair. Bring your veil, tiara, flowers or

any hair accessories to your appointment so your stylist can place them for you. A touch of shine spray, a final spray of freezing hairspray and extra bobby pins to secure your style will ensure maximum hold and shine for your special day. Your wedding hair should reflect your gown and overall wedding attire. Consider your dress style, the material it is made from and the neckline when choosing a hairstyle. Don’t strive to make your hair the focal point of your wedding style – strive to have it be part of the natural flow of your wedding style. Lastly, don’t forget to relax and trust your stylist and to enjoy the process.

Sarah LeNeveu opened Lysh Hair Studio in 2014, providing the latest trends and styles from professionals who tailor their services to meet your wedding day needs. 19

Wedding Tips SELECTING THE PERFECT WINE by L’Wren Farkas You got engaged, the venue is booked, your menu is finalized and now it’s time to lock in your wine selections. Regardless of your budget there are wines at all price levels that can really elevate your day to the next level.

It’s Time to Celebrate After you say your “I Do’s” a very elegant touch is to kick off the party with a toast to the bride and groom. There are two ways of approaching this. If staying within a budget but wanting a small sparkle I would suggest offering your guests a 3 ounce pour of bubbles rather than the standard 5 ounce pour. This allows for that added touch without going overboard. For a simple 3 ounce toast you will want to allocate 1 case of bubbles for a 100 person wedding. If you are wanting to offer a full 5 ounce pour per guest you will want to allocate 2 cases of bubbles which will also account for top up’s for your guests. A very general rule of thumb when looking at flavour profiles is that if you enjoy true Champagne but your budget does not, look for Spanish Cava as it carries the best value across the board for bubble selection. Prosecco although still dry is generally slightly sweeter and carries a higher price point. $- Cooks Brut, California USA

$$- Veuve Du Vernay- Blanc De Blancs Brut, France or Freixenet Negro Brut, Spain

KYLE HAMILTON PHOTOGRAPHY

Dinner is Served Generally calculate the amount of wine needed based on 4 glasses per guest with each bottle having five 5 ounce pours. For a 100 person wedding I normally suggest 3 cases of white and 4 cases of Red. If wanting to stay budget savvy and keep that edge of elegance ask your venue to not leave your wine bottles on the table and have the servers do proper wine service. A standard red wine glass can be between 12-19 ounces so your guest can very easily over pour if left on the table. Having the servers execute the wine service will help keep your wine calculations on point and you won’t risk running out during dinner service. British Columbia has an incredible wine selection with amazing offers at all price points. Here are a few of my favourite entry level wedding wine selections. $- Jackson Triggs Reserve Chardonnay - This is my favourite budget chardonnay. It is full

bodied with a touch of apple, vanilla, and buttery oak.

Jackson Triggs Reserve Cabernet Merlot - Full bodied with great balanced tannins- hints of dark berries, oak, spiced jam.

$$- Inniskillin Pinot Grigio - This medium bodied white has great notes of tropical fruits without being sweet. Slight lemon zest finish, very fresh and perfect for a hot summer day.

Inniskillin Merlot- This full bodied smooth red boasts of deep red fruits, baked spices, slight liquorice and long finish. Congratulations, and cheers to finding the perfect wine to pair with the occasion.

L’wren Farkas has been the restaurant manager and wine director at Island Lake Lodge for the past seven years, and with the organization for 13. Her passion is blending wine for Island Lake’s custom wine program, The 3 Bears Blends. 21

HELP YOUR GUESTS EXPLORE FERNIE by Krista Turcasso No matter where and when you’re planning to say “I Do” in Fernie, it’s a good idea to have some options available for your guests during their stay. While small in size, Fernie packs a punch year round with options for those interested in exploring the outdoors, learning about its rich history, taking in the arts and culture, or enjoying the colourful array of culinary and libatious offerings. Here are some seasonal options for those attending your event. For additional ideas, visit FernieFix.com or pick up a copy of the Fernie Fix, monthly or guide. You can also contact us for copies to hand out to your guests upon arrival.

Spring

Early Season Biking As the snow melts, the trails become uncovered and many are excited for the activity change in town. For those interested in a more mellow ride, the City of Fernie’s well-maintained trail network, much of which borders the Elk River, is a beautiful option. If you’re after a little more technical terrain with some elevation gain and loss, Montane offers a network of trails that are regularly the first to dry come spring, and are enjoyable for all levels.

Spring Skiing Nordic or downhill, this time of year is fantastic for goggle tans and slushy snow! Fernie Alpine Resort offers a lot of events to finish off the ski season, including the popular Fernival music festival and PPP (Powder, Pedal, Paddle) race. There typically is still enough snow to enjoy the Nordic trails, at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre or Fernie Alpine Resort. Check the grooming reports at FernieNordic.com and Skifernie.com. Exhibits The Fernie Museum and Fernie Arts Station regularly rotate their exhibits. The Museum has a standing exhibit on the main floor which takes you through the history of Fernie with unique and interactive mediums. Upstairs is alive with fresh exhibits every few months. The Arts Station has a new artist on exhibit every month, year round.

Summer

Live Music Every Wednesday in July and August, the Historic Downtown comes to life with live music, food vendors, kids’ activities and refreshment gardens with the Wednesday Concert Series. A free event, it’s a great way

to get a feel for the Fernie community. If here in August, Wapiti – Fernie’s Music Festival is a must. A two-day event the second weekend of the month, Wapiti celebrates Canadian Indie music in the Annex Park and is fun for all ages. Otherwise, hit a local bar as they all regularly host live musical acts of all kinds!

Float the River Sometimes, the best way to take in the views is from below. Whether floating on a tube or navigating in a raft or SUP, it’s difficult to avoid the gorgeous mountains that surround Fernie. The Elk River Alliance recently completed maps to guide people in their exploration of the Elk River. Visit Elkriveralliance.ca for details or pick one up at the Chamber of Commerce, downtown Info Centre or Wildsight.

Take a Hike From the Historical Walking Tours with the Fernie Museum, to the guided hikes offered at Island Lake Lodge, Fernie Alpine Resort and Wild Nature Tours, to the terrain offered just off town, Fernie is host to a plethora of options when it comes to hiking! Try out the Trail Forks App for all hiking trails (along with biking trails) or pick up the Fernie Trails

Winter Catskiing What a way to celebrate! There is nothing quite like fresh tracks followed by yummy snacks and a warm, dry ride in a cat to do it all again… and again and again. Fernie is home to two catskiing operations, Fernie Wilderness Adventures (Ferniewildnernessadventures. com) and Island Lake Catskiing (Islandlakecatskiing.com). Booking in advance is recommended, as you can imagine these are coveted days during the winter months.

Fernie Brewing Company Recently renovated to accommodate its growth and popularity, the Fernie Brewing Company has a tasting room and plenty of swag to peruse. They also offer brewery tours, and in the summer months you can take their “Trail to Ale” challenge and get a free beer and medal after your efforts! Ferniebrewing.com

Fall

Fishing People come to Fernie from all over the world to fish the infamous Elk River and its Cutthroat Trout, which is open from June 15 to April 1. So while there is ample opportunity during the year to fish here, fall is just so beautiful that it’s our pick! Walk or float the Elk River, and enjoy the colourful mountainsides as you cast that fly. Golfing The Fernie Golf and Country Club is a gorgeous course, that is approachable for the beginner to intermediate but also challenging for the

advanced golfer. With a little something for everything, and an amazing Clubhouse Restaurant to enjoy after, a round of golf is definitely something to consider while visiting Fernie. Fall is a quieter time, so there will be less tournaments and events taking place. Visit Golffernie.com for more details.

Trail Running Growing in popularity with each year, trail running has become a year-round activity in Fernie. Which comes to no surprise, as the trail network here is world-class and diverse. Fall is a great time to hit the trails on foot, with the sounds of leaves crunching beneath you and the cooler weather helping you get to your destination. Stag Leap Running Co. (Stagleaprunning.com) facilitates group runs, or pick up a Trail Map to choose your route!

Snowbiking Seriously, this is a thing. To the point that there is actual grooming taking place for the sport. In town, routes include trails in Ridgemont and Montane, just off town try Island Lake’s Lazy Lizard or the groomed trails at Fernie Alpine Resort. Bikes are available for rent at The Gear Hub or at the ski hill, go out in a group and have some of the most fun you’ve had on snow in awhile!

Hit the Movies Sometimes, you just need to unwind in front of a big screen and take in a movie. The Vogue Theatre in downtown Fernie offers new releases both in the evenings and for matinees. They also host the monthly Indie Films Fernie event. An Arts Station event, these monthly showings feature unique independent films that will have you thinking. Ferniemovies.com On top of all of these activities (and many others), Fernie boasts an impressive number of restaurants, bars and cafés making it difficult to make a choice any time of the year!

We hope you get to enjoy these activities and explore these events while celebrating you wedding. Get in touch (email info@ clarismedia.com) if you would like additional ideas or material to give guests upon arrival. 23

Wedding Tips ORGANIZING YOUR HONEYMOON by Lori Caravetta Wedding planning is one of the most excitingly stressful times of your life, and if planning ‘the big day’ is not enough to have on your plate couples are often tasked with deciding on where to spend some quality time together after saying “I do.” Nowadays, living with your significant other pre-wedding is the norm and chances are you already have everything you could possibly need. Before sending wedding invitations, decide if a gift-registry is necessary or if having a greenback wedding to help absorb wedding costs is a better option. You can also register your wedding through your local Travel Agency and give your guests the option of purchasing gift certificates of varying denominations to help directly with honeymoon expenses. These gift certificates have no expiration date, which puts no pressure on you to take a trip if you aren’t quite ready after your wedding. Here are some tips to help you with the decision-making process.

PLANNING: You and your fiancé should set aside some pre-wedding time to discuss your expected budget and where you are interested in going, as well as what you are hoping to see and experience as newlyweds. Your expected

budget will typically dictate how lavish or frugal your trip ends up being. And since the ‘romantic getaway to a secluded island’ isn’t for everyone, your honeymoon should be as unique and memorable as you want it to be.

RESEARCH: With the world at your fingertips, research of our vastly beautiful world may very well leave you with more questions than answers. You should familiarize yourself with the country you are planning on visiting and make note of the entry and exit requirements, local laws and culture, possible health hazards, travel advisories, natural hazards and climate, and where to find help in case you need it. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your local travel professional for help if you feel overwhelmed. Their knowledge, expertise and access to special travel promos and perks are an invaluable resource.

PERSONAL TIPS: Arrange house, pet and babysitters well in advance. Make several photocopies of important paperwork and documentation and give copies to trusted family members or friends and leave copies in a safe place in your home. It is always a good idea to provide loved one’s copies of your itinerary and other important trip information so they know exactly where you

will be, should anything happen. Call your cell phone provider to ask about international phone plans to ensure your phone will work while at the destination of your choice and to avoid the potential high costs associated with using your phone in a foreign country. Though travel insurance isn’t mandatory, it is highly recommended and certainly gives peace of mind knowing that you have coverage in unforeseen situations.

HONEYMOON TRENDS: You want it, you got it! There is truly something for everyone, no matter where you plan on travelling. Here are some hot honeymoon trends to consider with your love: Mini-Moons, Volunteering, River Cruising, Road-tripping, Gourmet Getaways, Multi-Destination, Eco-Tourism, Adventure Seeking, the list goes on! And if a destination honeymoon isn’t your thing, you can always Honeymoon at Home. Congratulations, and we hope you have a beautiful wedding and honeymoon!
