Luis Fernández-Vega
Bajo la presidencia del profesor Luis Fernández-Vega, los oftalmólogos españoles se dieron cita en Adeje, Tenerife, entre el 25 y el 28 de septiembre para compartir conocimientos y experiencias a través de sesiones de alta especialización, ponencias y cursos básicos que suponen una gran oportunidad para actualizar conocimientos y establecer relaciones en un marco de impulso a la formación continuada en prevención, tratamiento médico y cirugía de las enfermedades oculares con el fin de dar a los pacientes el mejor servicio. Así, en representación del Instituto estuvieron presentes el Dr. Álvaro Fernández-Vega, la Dra. Beatriz Fernández-Vega, el Dr. Manuel Riaño, el Dr. Amhaz Hussein Mamoud, el Dr. Mariano Yllera Sánchez, el Dr. Jesús Merayo, la Dra. Carmen González Castaño y el Dr. José F. Alfonso, que impartió una comunicación y participó en tres simposios en los que abordó, entre otros temas, el manejo del astigmatismo en pacientes con queratocono o las lentes intraoculares difractivas post Láser Excimer. También intervinieron el Dr. Pedro Pablo Rodríguez Calvo, que abordó la evaluación del astigmatismo corneal en pacientes intervenidos de escleroctomía profunda no perforante, así como la Dra. Begoña Baamonde, que trató la densidad de las células endoteliales en pacientes con implantes de lentes epicapsulares de colámero tras ocho años de seguimiento, con la colaboración del Dr. Miguel Naveiras, quien también compartió con el Dr. Carlos Lisa una disertación sobre los segmentos intracorneales en la corrección del astigmatismo postqueratoplastia.
Since the end of 2011, Professor Luis Fernández-Vega is also president of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology (Sociedad Española de Oftalmología - SEO). The Fundación Mutua Madrileña supports the cornea transplant project of the Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica The board of trustees of the Fundación Mutua Madrileña has agreed to grant an aid to the Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica in order to support the project “Cornea transplants in the XXI century. Structure and logistics of a future tissue bank in ophthalmology”, aiming to develop technology that enables a maximum leverage of the ocular tissues removed from an altruist donor and which are usually cast aside; in order to satisfy the needs of the largest number of patients with just one donation. The challenge is to optimise the activity of an ocular tissue bank and to apply new technologies to the traditional bank to meet the future transplant challenges. As well as providing endothelium, anterior lamellas and stromas, the bank has to think that the future will be in the transplant of tissue-engineered corneas. Out of the 986 applications that have been filled, 74 will finally receive funding.
