Message from the Chair and CEO

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines “transform” as “to change the form or outward appearance of” or “to change the condition, nature or function of.” Change is the operative word.

Changing an organization is never easy. It requires hard work, dedication and difficult conversations. Some people don’t want to be part of it.

At the Ferguson Library, we are embracing the challenge of transformation. We have committed ourselves to becoming an anti-racist organization— changing the way we approach diversity and inclusion so it’s more than just lip service. So we live it every day.

This is hard, slow work, but it is imperative.

The murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor in 2020 galvanized the country to confront our nation’s pervasive racial injustice. Faith-based and human services organizations in Stamford formed the group, Stamford Stands Against Racism, and challenged other organizations to address the systemic racism in our community and beyond.

We took up the challenge and started this work here at home. During the last year, our Leadership Team and Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Council read and discussed the book, The Conversation, by renowned social psychologist Dr. Robert Livingston. It was an eye-opening primer for many of us on speaking the truth about racism and how we can work toward becoming an anti-racist organization. Many of the discussions were open and personal and we learned from our colleagues of color.

This fall, we will divide into small groups and work through the book with the entire staff. Our goal is to begin to dismantle the systemic racism within our organization, with an eye to becoming a model for the community. We plan to develop a written statement on the library’s commitment to addressing racism and actionable steps to measure our success.

It is difficult work but the journey is rewarding.

As part of this commitment, we took a hard look at our organizational values and found they needed updating. Our new foundational principles reflect our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as well as the belief that intellectual freedom is the cornerstone of our democracy.

We are thrilled that Dr. Livingston will speak at the library this fall and take time to meet with our Board of Trustees. It will be an inspiration to hear him in person as we continue this journey together.

Big News

NEW STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK

Guided by the consultancy firm, Innovation Builders, we began the process of creating a new strategic framework to guide us over the next three years. We received input from library leadership, staff and the community to articulate our values, then held a series of community conversations to understand how we can better serve our public. We also put together a survey to examine user needs and library usage, keeping community needs at the forefront of the work we do.

The results informed this new construct, which incorporates the library’s values, infrastructure, drivers and community needs. The new strategic framework will help us provide the most responsive and effective library service we can deliver.

ADDITIONAL HOURS

We added hours at the Main Library and Harry Bennett Branch this year, bringing us one step closer to pre-Covid times. The Main Library is now open until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The Harry Bennett Branch is open until 6 p.m. weekdays, except 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, in addition to our regular weekend hours.

“Thank you for providing Stamford with a fantastic library system which is extra vital during this crazy pandemic.” —Joan Kranz

Special Events

INAUGURAL HOWARD KAPLAN MEMORIAL LECTURE ON LAW AND SOCIETY

DEDICATION OF MARY GAIL MALLOY ROTARY ROOM

In May, family and friends of the late Gail Malloy attended an event dedicating the Mary Gail Malloy Rotary Room. It was a warm remembrance of Gail, who chaired A Novel Affair for the first five years, and was a past Citizen Advisor and board member of the Friends of the Ferguson Library. Gail was also involved in Stamford Rotary and many other causes.

RICHARD HARWOOD HOPE & HEALING TOUR

In November, Associate Justice Andrew

McDonald of the Connecticut Supreme Court delivered a compelling talk on state government. The lecture was the first in a series supported by the Stamford law firm Wofsey, Rosen, Kweskin & Kuriansky and the family of the late Howard Kaplan. We were pleased to welcome our major donors to a reception before the event.

DEDICATION OF DUDLEY N. WILLIAMS, JR. AUDITORIUM

We held a very special event in December to rededicate the Main Library auditorium in honor of the late Ferguson Library Trustee Dudley N. Williams, Jr. Dudley was a long-time Ferguson Library board member and past chair, and a great champion of the library and Stamford community.

Richard Harwood of the Harwood Institute led a discussion in May about finding innovative ways in our era of divisiveness to recreate and re-imagine our communities. The event was hosted by the library and the City of Stamford.

HIP HOP PIONEER DMC

Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, a founding member of the hip hop group RUN DMC, packed the house in June to talk about his children’s book, Darryl’s Dream, a story about finding confidence, facing bullies and celebrating yourself.

Books & More

NEA BIG READ—BELOVED

“Throughout all this, the Ferguson has been my place of refuge. To find a book and lose myself in its pages provided all the peace and alternative reality I needed.”

DIGITAL NAVIGATORS

The Stamford community came together in October to read Toni Morrison’s classic novel, Beloved, a searing examination of the physical, emotional, and spiritual devastation wrought by slavery. In addition to giving out free copies of the book, we held book discussions and other programs during the month to bring together people of different ages, backgrounds and life experiences. Our kick-off event was a community quilt project, evoking the rich world of the novel.

TECHNOLOGY LENDING LIBRARY

Books will always be a crucial part of our mission, but libraries have become so much more. With a $10,000 grant from First County Bank, we launched a technology lending library, where the public can borrow equipment like a microscope and telescope as well as crafting and cooking supplies. The funds have also allowed us to offer programs such as social media for entrepreneurs.

Funded with a $100,000 Iinstitue of Museum and Library Services grant awarded through the CT State Library, we launched a Digital Navigators project to address Stamford’s persistent digital inequity. Many low-income households in our community do not have an internet connection or lack the ability to use basic devices. With the funding we hired four multilingual “navigators” to teach digital skills and help with connectivity issues. The navigators also help residents access critical online services such as banking and setting up email accounts. Since the program began, we have assisted 379 Stamford residents.

“My first library and favorite of all time.”

Programming

According to the Urban Libraries Council

Business Value Calculator, we provided $2,481,837 in value to entrepreneurs and businesses over the past year, including:

■ Research services: $2,188,856

■ Training and education: $209,670

■ Technology and equipment: $80,561

■ Physical space: $2,750

Many of our programs returned in person this year, including our business and career and technology classes. In our Tech Lab, we offer introductory classes such as basic Microsoft Word, in addition to more advanced workshops like video editing. One hundred thirty-one people attended 43 in-person tech classes this year. Our popular Let’s Talk English conversation groups have stayed on Zoom, which make them accessible to a wide number of people. All together, we served more than 1,400 students this year with a variety of English language learning programs.

We celebrated Black History Month in February with an art exhibit spotlighting local Black artists and a program about artist Winfred Rembert, co-author of the memoir, Chasing Me to My Grave.

Our long-running Civility in America series was back in person with PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi in February, former Congressman Chris Shays in April and former National Security Advisor John Bolton in June.

In June, we hosted military historian Marc Wortman, author of Admiral Hyman Rickover, Engineer of Power, to deliver the annual Joe R. Sexton Lecture. It was an engaging talk on a fascinating subject. We also commemorated Juneteenth with a one-man performance by Ronald “Smokey” Stevens.

We hosted several family cultural programs this year, including a Hispanic Heritage Month event in October and a Diwali celebration in November. In February, 130 people attended a Lunar New Year event with performances by Chinese acrobats and Tae Kwan Do students.

“The classes have given me confidence to feel that I belong here. People understand what I say now and I understand them.”

Kids & Teens

For the second year in a row, the library was part of the Cradle to Career Stamford Summer Learning Initiative, which embedded literacy coaches in four day camps in Stamford. We hired the coaches for the six-week program, and offered support to camp staff and counselors. We also extended our Linked Libraries program to cover the schools’ summer program.

Families were delighted to come back into the library for storytimes this spring. And we continued to hold outdoor storytimes even into the colder months. We are still offering some programs virtually, such as our popular Crafternoons. Craft supplies are available for pick up at the library, then participants Zoom in for the activity.

One of the highlights for teens this year— our Harry Bloch Bringing History Alive program featuring Author Andrew Aydin, who spoke about his new graphic novel, Run, the continuation of the story of the late Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis.

“Thank you for being a safe place for kids to go and learn and relax. Especially kids who otherwise don’t have such a place. We ♥ the Ferguson.” —Julie

Community Partnerships

Outreach is one of our strategic goals and we partner with many organizations to bring enriching programs to the community.

We host Person to Person’s mobile food pantry at the South End Branch every Tuesday and work closely with the Stamford Public Education Foundation throughout the year to get books into kids’ hands.

Over the summer we partnered with Stamford Pride on a series of Pride Month programs, including a drag storytime and a talk with film critic Michael Koresky.

One of our more colorful partnerships was building a book bike with the Junior League of Stamford–Norwalk, Domus and the Woodworkers Club of Norwalk. The bike is perfect for taking books out into the community and was a big hit during its inaugural trip to Latham Park in the fall.

Our long-running partnership with the Stamford Art Association resumed in October with an exhibit titled Fragments of Memory, which tied into the evocative themes of Toni Morrison’s Beloved, our NEA Big Read title.

Harry Bennett Branch

The Harry Bennett Branch got a facelift this year. With city funding, we soundproofed the auditorium, which will allow us to show films and host more programs at the branch. We’re also updating our circulation desk with a modern customer service counter. The new fountain outside the front entrance was generously donated by Gary Gepner in honor of his late wife, Susan Baldwin, who was the longtime Harry Bennett Branch Supervisor.

We were able to bring in-person programs back to the branch this year. Volunteers from AARP offered tax prep assistance—always a popular service—and we put our beautiful lawn to good use when the weather warmed up.

“Harry Bennett Library is a great neighborhood library. My granddaughter loves going to pick out books.”
—Harry Bennett user
12

South End Branch

The South End Branch hosted many community-focused activities this year, including a federally funded free summer lunch program for kids, summer camp and a storywalk to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. The branch works closely with partners such as UniteCT, which provided emergency rental assistance for people impacted by Covid. We also partnered with the Community Action Agency of Western Connecticut to give away Thanksgiving turkeys and other fixings to families in need.

South End’s long-running African and American-American authors book club is still going strong, and a new program to offer tech help to seniors has been a big success.

“Great idea!! Love that you are helping our seniors.” —Cheryl Vallejo
13

Weed Memorial & Hollander Branch

The big event at the Weed Memorial & Hollander Branch this year was a Tiny Art Show, which drew an enthusiastic response from amateur artists of all ages. We provided the supplies and community members came up with their own inspiration. The result: an enchanting exhibit of four-by-four pictures of every subject imaginable. It was a fun way to get people engaged and back into the library.

Our outdoor programs, such as summer arts and crafts, continue to be popular and we held storytimes on the lawn right into winter.

“We love the staff at the library! They are always kind and helpful and make you feel right at home.” —Chitra Patel
14

Bookmobile

The Bookmobile visits housing complexes, preschools and neighborhoods throughout Stamford. Thanks to a generous donation from the Greenberg family, we were able to take the Bookmobile out on the road summer weekends, bringing library service to parks and other community locations.

Passports

As people began traveling again, our passport business rebounded. We processed 8,205 passport applications this year and added Wednesday service to the Harry Bennett Branch passport office.

Friends of the Ferguson Library

The Friends advocate for the library and raise funds through their successful Book Shop and author events. The Friends Author Series was back in person in September with Zakiya Harris, who spoke about her bestselling novel, The Other Black Girl. The Friends also welcomed Alafair Burke and Erica Katz in February. Many author programs continue to be hybrid, which allows people to attend even if they can’t come to the library.

CrimeCONN was back in person this year. This successful mystery lovers’ conference is co-sponsored by the Mystery Writers of America/NY chapter.

The Stamford Literary Competition, which recognizes the best in student writing, held its spring awards ceremony in person this year. This was the competition’s 37th year.

Another long-standing Friends’ tradition is its Books for Babies program, which provides a board book to every baby born at Stamford Hospital. The program has been going strong since 1986 and some recipients are now parents themselves!

The Friends of the Ferguson Library was recognized with a 2022 Friends of Connecticut Library award for their project, Ferguson Friends Against Racism. The Friends began this work after the 2020 murder of George Floyd, when community organizations in Stamford launched Stamford Stands Against Racism. The Friends took this work to heart and have developed their own anti-racism program.
