Message from the Chair and President In his groundbreaking book, Palaces for the People, sociologist Eric Klinenberg makes an eloquent case for the importance of public spaces like libraries. Gathering places that are open to everyone, where people come together to tackle difficult problems as a community. Or perhaps just find quiet space to work, read or learn a new skill. We know the value of libraries. And so do most Americans. According to the Pew Research Center, nearly half of all Americans visited a library in the past year. Here at The Ferguson, we have seen library use change over the last decade. To be sure, books and literacy are still at the heart of our mission. But people also come seeking community. Our initiative, Facing Racism in Stamford, co-sponsored by Everyday Democracy and other community partners, challenged Stamford residents to explore the difficult topic of racism in our community. Where else but the library—a safe, neutral space—to embark on such a project. People come to the library for many different reasons. But come they do. Last year, 640,000 people walked through our doors. Some brought their children to storytimes, others came to learn English. Some came for the shared experience of a lecture or concert. Others came looking for a book. Some just wanted to get in out of the cold. We welcomed them all. Eric Klinenberg describes libraries as shared spaces where crucial connections are made. We think that’s a pretty accurate description. Libraries are truly the people’s place. Equalizers that, according to Klinenberg, help ensure a community’s resilience. With this Annual Report, we are pleased to share a snapshot of our work over the past year. Our heartfelt thanks to all of you who helped make it possible: our generous donors, Trustees, Citizen Advisors, Foundation and Friends boards, and volunteers. And of course our dedicated staff, who work each day to enrich the lives of the people of Stamford. Tom Cassone Chair, The Ferguson Library Board of Trustees

Alice Knapp President, The Ferguson Library

“Libraries raised me.” – Ray Bradbury 3

Special Events

Visit from Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor What a treat! In December, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor (above) visited Turn of River Middle School, hosted by the Library and Stamford Public Schools. She delighted and inspired audience members of all ages.

“This is a beautiful space, a great resource.” – Nancy Selman

TEDx As part of an Innovate Stamford grant, The Ferguson Library hosted a one day TEDx program in May, focused on community. A professional speakers group grew out of the program, with the purpose of helping the Library identify and train future TEDx speakers.

New Coffee Shop We are thrilled that locally-owned Winfield Street Coffee will open soon at the Library. Work began on the former Starbucks space in May. Winfield will offer employment opportunities for young people through Domus, a nonprofit which serves high-risk youth in Stamford. (right)

Entrepreneurs We are all about supporting innovation and entrepreneurship. Small business start-ups and other entrepreneurs now have a work space at the Library. With funding from CTNext, First County Bank and the Rotary Club of Stamford, The Ferguson created a Tech & Entrepreneur Hub on the third floor of the Main Library. It’s an open space with flexible furniture that allows for meetings and collaboration. This year, we rebooted our Entrepreneur-in-Residence program by hiring two business innovators who provide support to entrepreneurs as they create and grow their ventures. Entrepreneurial energy kicked into high gear at Startup Weekend in September, the culmination of Stamford Innovation Week. Seven teams put their heads together to imagine prototypes for new businesses, then pitched their ideas to a panel of judges. (right) Our monthly 1 Million Cups program gives entrepreneurs a chance to network and try out new ideas before a receptive audience. (below)

“I learned a lot about startups and the process. The relationships that came out of this weekend were invaluable.” – Startup participant 5

Funding and Support Many thanks to our supporters! We receive 85% of our operating budget from the city of Stamford. We must raise the rest. Whether you gave $10 or $10,000, your generosity helps makes a difference in so many lives.

A Novel Affair Our spring gala, A Novel Affair, raised $245,000 in an evening of food and festivities to benefit the Library. We were delighted to honor Jay Sandak and Mary Sommer for their service to the Library and the Stamford community.

Books and More

“I love the library. I use it all the time. I’m a firm believer in what they do.” – Nancy Sinacori

You can borrow a lot more than books and movies at the library—we also circulate tool kits, musical instruments, and even a sewing machine, which turned out to be a big hit! You can also try out new technology like virtual reality. Our Wonder Lab is exciting for any age. (below)

Books come in many formats these days, and we continue to develop both our print and ematerial collections, as well as offer streaming content such as books, audiobooks, music and movies. As fewer people check out DVDs, streaming has become increasingly popular.

“The Ferguson Library means so much to me… I have a very large family that lives in Stamford and the library is the best place for my family members to go and find the resources they need to help with their education or a great place to go if they’re just looking for a really great read.”

– Tamar Reddic

Harry Bennett Branch The big news at the Harry Bennett Branch (right) was the installation of new flooring. The project was accomplished entirely through contributions, most notably an extraordinary $100,000 gift from the Herbert & Nell Singer Foundation. Many users participated on a smaller scale through a Go Fund Me campaign. We’re grateful to them all! The flooring is washable and made from recycled materials and has made the branch look fresh and inviting.

“We have loved this library for many years and are so grateful to have this in Stamford!”

– Mary Kate and Mark Metwally

Besides the many and varied programs for children and adults – baby races (left) are always a favorite – Harry Bennett hosted 700 plus students and teachers from Westover School for three days in November when the school unexpectedly closed for mold remediation. Our staff handled it all without a hiccup.

Our “new” branch is now 20 years old, and with grant funding, we held two community meetings to conceptualize the Harry Bennett Branch of the future. These ideation sessions started the planning process for an eventual renovation project.

A craft program in July drew hard-to-reach millennials. 9

South End Branch 720 children received a free lunch over the summer at the South End Branch The South End Branch, located in the Lathon Wider Community Center, serves a diverse and rapidly changing neighborhood. In many ways, the branch is an anchor for the community: Person-to-Person distributes food to needy families each week from the Library’s parking lot, (left), and the South End Branch offers free lunches for kids during the summer through the federally-funded Summer Food Service Program.

The branch hosts a wide variety of programs for children and adults. Our African and African-American Authors book club has been going strong for 24 years. Young readers enjoy their own Picture Us Reading book club (center) and South End also offers a regular afterschool Homework CafĂŠ for neighborhood children, along with other programs.(right)

10

Weed Memorial & Hollander Branch The Weed Memorial & Hollander Branch in Springdale is beloved by the community. Many people walk to the Library and the staff greet regulars by name. The beautiful grounds are perfect for outdoor programming in the summer, including our drop-in gardening and Mad Science! (below right) Weed also hosted the Library’s Adult Summer Reading Club finale concert on a lovely evening in August.

“I don’t know what would happen if I did not have the Ferguson Weed Branch. They have the greatest staff ever.” – Bernadette Lynch-Gupta

“I adore this little library” – Sara D. 11

Programming 70,000 people attended library programs last year The Library offers a dizzying array of programs for all ages—book discussions, author visits, technology training, concerts, English language learning, art exhibits—the list goes on. Here are some of the highlights: Our third annual MakeFest (right) took place in September, with engaging activities for the whole community, including 3D printing, button making, a retro photo booth and even dancing on the plaza.

In January, the Library once again participated in Global Game Jam, (left) the world’s largest game creation event. Gamers here in Stamford spent a feverish weekend coming up with ideas, then forming teams to work on their projects.

Stamford came together to read poet Kevin Young’s Book of Hours for the NEA Big Read in April. We partnered with UConn-Stamford and Stamford High School to offer a wealth of programs throughout the month, including a very special visit by the author. (right)

12

The Library has offered English language training for some time, but with an increased demand for more advanced instruction, we rolled out Transitions to Success in partnership with Literacy Volunteers at Family Centers. These classes focus on English and career development with the goal of preparing students for the workforce.

We are very proud of a new initiative, Facing Racism in Stamford, a series of dialogues that challenged Stamford residents to explore the difficult topic of racism in our community. This powerful program, co-sponsored by CT Humanities Council, Everyday Democracy, DOMUS and All Our Kin, drew a committed group of more than 100 participants.

Family Programs We love holding events the whole family can enjoy. Our Lunar New Year program (right) fills our auditorium every year and the Black History Month celebration at the South End Branch drew 30 kids and adults for an afternoon of poetry, dance and piano performances.

Kids and Teens

“Wonderful place to meet new moms, the Ferguson Library builds community!” – Flavia Lodato

“Our favorite place.” – Pooja Sharma Our Summer Reading Clubs keep kids learning throughout the summer. Last year, 3,117 kids and teens registered for our summer reading programs, reading a combined total of 1.2 million minutes! A new series, Countdown to Kindergarten, which emphasized basic skills such as the alphabet, numbers and colors, tapped into an enthusiastic audience. Our makerspace programs foster innovation and creativity with hands-on projects like jar lanterns and lemon clocks. Who knew you could power a clock with a citrus fruit! (next page, top)

14

The Library offers a multitude of programs for babies right on up to teens. Our storytimes, with an emphasis on early literacy, provide the skills needed for pre-reading, and are a fun way for parents and little ones to socialize. We even tried Storytime Yoga last year, to rave reviews. (below)

“My family and I love the library. The youth programs are amazing. So much to offer and the staff at all locations are so friendly and helpful. Thank you Ferguson Library.” – Jacqulyn Stewart We ramped up our “tween” programing this year, to reach kids between the ages of ten and thirteen, who aren’t quite ready for our teen offerings. A tween book discussion is gaining traction, and our Great Stamford Bake-Off (right) was a rousing success.

Our many teen volunteers help with the children and teen summer reading clubs. Last year, 217 teen volunteers donated more than 1,200 hours of time over the summer. ory group

our teen advis Teens Making a Difference,

Teens also enjoy regular book discussions and practical programs like Red Cross babysitter training, funded by Stamford’s Liberty Wealth Management. 15

On the Road The Bookmobile is the traveling face of the Library. It is on the road three days a week, visiting childcare centers, housing complexes and community centers. It also represents the Library at special events like BLT’s Family Fun Day, Back to School Night at Davenport Elementary School and Harvest Festival at Fairgate Farm. Winning entry in our Bookmobile Drawing Contest by the young artists in the Toddler B class at Piper’s Hill Learning Center.

The Purple Bus brought 87 classes, a total of 1,640 school children, to the Library last year, some for the very first time. The Purple Bus program is funded by the Friends of The Ferguson Library.

“We had an incredible time getting an insider’s tour of the library. We learned how the library works and all the amazing resources they offer to our community. We can’t wait to visit again soon!” – Katie Lyvers, first grade teacher Strawberry Hill Elementary School 16

Outreach and Partnerships We collaborate with many organizations to bring library services into the community where they are needed. In November, we began leading Every Child Ready to Read at the Chester Addison Community Center. This series teaches caregivers how to nurture pre-reading skills. Some of the other ways we work closely with community organizations: Provide space to Access Health CT for health insurance enrollment. Last year, 482 people registered for health insurance at the Library. Bi-monthly middle school book discussions at the Boys & Girls Club. (above) Summer reading outreach to Stamford day camps. Last summer, we registered 450 children for summer reading at Stamford’s day camps. (left)

Person-to-Person brings their mobile food pantry to the South End Branch each Tuesday.

Ferguson Outdoors brought summer storytimes to Latham and Commons parks. (below)

Art exhibits at the Main Library in collaboration with the Stamford Art Association. Last winter, we teamed up with the Stamford Public Schools to exhibit teachers’ artwork. (below, right) Visiting Books program brings books to senior centers, like Brighton Gardens. (below)

Friends of The Ferguson Library The Friends celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2019. After four decades, this dynamic group is still going strong! In 2018–2019, the Friends book shop raised $155,000 The shop has locations at the Main Library and Harry Bennett Branch and sells gently used books that are donated by the community. (below)

Friends volunteers sort through donated books

“We never leave empty handed!!” – Melissa Knorr The Friends’ many activities include the Literary Pub Crawl, which is always a sell-out; the Author Series (middle, right), featuring bestselling authors; and a new Mini-Golf event (below, right), which brought 500 people to the Harry Bennett Branch on a cold February weekend and raised $13,000 for the Library! Two of the Friends signature programs: Books for Babies, which provides a board book to every baby born at Stamford Hospital; and the Literary Competition, which recognizes recognizes excellence in student writing.

Staff

“We enjoy each visit to the Ferguson Library. We continue to be amazed by the friendliness, competence and dedication of the librarians and staff. Keep up the great work that you and others do for our community!!” – Ashok and Surekha Shenoy Equity, Diversity and Inclusion This year the Library began working on an organizational assessment through the prism of race. We created an internal Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Council, which will begin reviewing our policies and practices in this regard. We will then create an action plan to better serve our diverse community.
