Conservatory Outlet Enjoys Apprenticeship Boom After £250,000 Investment

A Wakefield fabricator of windows, door and living spaces is reaping the benefits of a £250,000 investment drive in developing its own staff.

Nearly a quarter of Conservatory Outlet’s 180-strong workforce has come through an apprenticeship and the firm is continuing this commitment by creating a further five positions in its offices and on the shopfloor.

Many of those who have completed apprenticeships with the company are now in managerial positions and have played a crucial role in the fabricator having one of its most productive years in its history, with sales and manufacturing output up by approximately 25%.

The business, which is a finalist in the Excellence in Learning & Development and People Excellence in SMEs categories at the Yorkshire HR Awards, is now looking to put more of its employees through degree level courses, as well as working to introduce a specialised degree-level manufacturing apprenticeship.

Karen Starkey, Head of HR at Conservatory Outlet, commented: “The talent isn’t out there waiting for us just to go out and recruit, so we need to do more by ‘growing our own’.

“This was the commitment we made in 2019 and, in the following five years, we have managed to attract and retain 42 apprentices, covering business admin, HR, purchasing, marketing, production and maintenance - just to mention a few roles.”

She went on to add: “We’ve spent over £250,000, but the return on investment is huge as we have

employees who get our company’s longstanding values and are passionate about delivering the best possible service and products to our customers across the 27-strong Conservatory Outlet network.

“Our apprenticeship programme is tailored to the individual, with each apprentice receiving oneto-one mentoring, additional skills support and regular reviews to check on progress and personal development. We want them to feel part of the family.”

One of the big success stories of the training programme is 28-year-old Joe Davis, who joined the business five years ago as an entry-level Maintenance Apprentice.

He quickly impressed bosses with his desire to learn, passing his Level 2 and Levels 3 before moving on to his current HNC in Engineering with an electrical bias that the company is paying for. Once this has been achieved, he can then move forward to a Degree Level 7 qualification.

“If you told me in 2019 I could one day have a degree, I would never have believed you,” pointed out Joe.

“The opportunity to earn whilst I learned was a big draw and my career has definitely accelerated way quicker than I expected. I’m now an important part of the 3-strong team that’s responsible for keeping a 75,000 sq ft manufacturing facility running by providing preventative and on-thespot maintenance works.

“I felt the belief in me from day one. The company’s support means a lot and has given me the confidence to take on the different courses. The

fact Conservatory Outlet has also paid for my HNC and given me one day off per week to study has made the dream possible.”

Karen, who has recently joined the ‘Manufacturing Skills Special Interest Group’ for Make it in Manufacturing, concluded: “Joe is the perfect example of what we are trying to do. He was keen to learn and secure a sustainable long-term job and we recognised from day one that he could be a real asset to the business.

“That’s why we’ve fully supported his advanced courses, as well as his Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships, and we will continue to support him on his personal development journey.

“The next big challenge on the horizon is to formalise a Manufacturing Degree Apprenticeship.

“There’s not one out there that delivers what we need at the moment and that’s frustrating – we’re hoping to change this with the help of the West Yorkshire Manufacturing Forums and the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF).”

Double Recognition For AV4 At The National Fenestration Awards

Leading window and door specialist, Winkhaus UK, are delighted to have received two awards at this year’s National Fenestration Awards. The awards for Door Component of the Year and Digital Marketing Campaign of the Year were awarded to the company’s newest innovation, the AV4 multipoint autoLocking solution.

Since the introduction of the first hooked autoLock almost 20 years ago, Winkhaus has developed its AV range in an innovation timeline of industry firsts. The autoLock AV4 range consists of the AV4, AV4 Heritage, AV4 EntryGuard, AV4 M4 with blueMatic EAV4, blueMatic EAV4+ motors controllable with the Winkhaus doorControl application. The new AV4 product family is available in a range of backsets and faceplate sizes including U-rail, providing suitability for all door constructions.

AV4 journey and development

Designed to combat the issues with thermal expansion, AV4 is the turning point for fabricators and installers who are tired of costly call outs to deal with sash to frame issues, and to make hinge and keep adjustments. The AV4 autoLock reduces the force needed to operate by 40% compared to the market leading AV2 and up to 70% compared to competitors’ solutions. Combined with wider installation tolerances, AV4 continues to operate where other solutions fail.

George Smith, Senior Product and Technical Manager for Winkhaus UK, said: “The design brief for AV4 came directly through customer insight that highlighted the impact of remedial calls due to thermal expansion that increase the force required to retract a locking mechanism.

Expansion can be affected by many factors including installation, alignment of keeps, door maintenance, temperature and building structure. As these factors fluctuate, so does the potential deviation of a door impacting the end user’s ability to open and secure their door.

Through partnership and innovation, we designed the AV4 autoLock to overcome the well-known industry issue of thermal expansion and adapt to changing conditions, offering reliable security and ease of use for end users.”

Testing against real world conditions

Winkhaus wanted to measure the real-world impact that AV4 can have on a doors ease of use, completing extensive testing, including benchmarking AV4’s performance against the market leading AV2 and competitor’s solutions, plus inviting end-users to test solutions against the simulated impact of thermal expansion compared to other locks on the market.

When it comes to thermal expansion, the industry standard tolerance for doors is up to 5mm with a tolerance of +or-2mm being commonplace. To simulate deviation, packers were inserted in 2mm increments with initial measurements being take from zero deviation. The doors used were from the same fabricator, the same batch of manufacture and all hardware, other than the locks and keeps, the same.

The invited research group included individuals with arthritis, disabled family members, and elderly individuals, all who have struggled to operate locks suffering from the impact of thermal expansion previously. The results from all testing were conclusive with AV4 continuing to operate with ease to double the industry door standard.

AV4 reception and impact

AV4 is a revolutionary product that is changing the accepted norm, showing people how easy it can

be to operate a locking mechanism – even in the face of thermal expansion.

Mike Rushen, Sales Director for Winkhaus UK, said: “Designed with extensive insights into problematic door operation, and tested rigorously, the AV4 autoLock has been designed to significantly reduce callouts and remedial works. We have worked closely with leading door leaf providers and major manufacturers to ensure this lock sets a new standard in reliability.”

“We are delighted with the early success of AV4, and proud to receive the recognition of the National Fenestration Awards, especially as this is through the nominations and votes of our customers and the impact AV4 is having in the market.”

Marketing support

At Winkhaus UK, everything we do is centred around guaranteeing the success of our customers, providing added value products, services, and solutions to ensure they have maximum competitiveness.

The marketing team have worked closely with customers to provide a wide range of assets to promote AV4, which are all available to download from Winkhaus Portal, so they are able to effectively market, install, and maintain Winkhaus products. We are proud of the recognition of Digital Marketing Campaign of the Year by the National Fenestration Awards and all who placed a nomination for us in this category. Integrating targeting digital content with customer and end user testimonials, our campaign for AV4 allowed the product’s features and benefits to speak for themselves, amplifying its reception in the market.

Edgetech Innovation Enables Fantastic Facades

Edgetech’s Super Spacer® has brought exceptional performance to three striking, ambitious and outstandingly sustainable buildings.

The Hoch Zwei office tower in Vienna boasts a distinctive convex-concave shape, earning nicknames like “sails” and “croissants.”

This 23-story landmark incorporates 13,500 square meters of glass facade, offering a unique blend of transparency, light permeability, and excellent thermal insulation.

Doering Glass – Edgetech customers since 2004 –supplied 132 curved glass panels, each with six variations and reaching sizes of up to 1500 x 4000 mm, to form the building’s 2000-square-meter rounded corners.

The double-glazed units feature a combination of laminated safety glass, PVB film, solar control glass, argonfilled interspaces, and lowemissivity glazing, achieving a U value of 1.5 W/m²K and a light transmittance of 39%.

The meticulous design also included screen-printed sections on the glass panels, enhancing privacy and adding a touch of security, particularly in the facade’s outward-facing corners.

Just 400 meters away from Hoch Zwei lies the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

The university’s library, designed by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, features a visually striking white and black structure connected by a glass joint incorporating Doering Glass’ curved glass panels.

The most prominent feature of the LLC is the “monitor” – a projecting roof with a curved window front.

The complexity of the building’s design extends to the curved glass itself, reaching heights of up to 5 meters and unfolded lengths of nearly 4 meters.

Doering Glass’ expertise in curved glass extends to London’s architectural landscape as well.

Sixty London, a 9-story office and retail building designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, features a curved facade that complements the surrounding Victorian architecture.

The building’s organic design incorporates approximately 1400 curved aluminium louvres, adding a captivating dimension to the facade.

Doering Glass supplied over 1000 square meters of curved and concave insulating glass for the facade and roof terrace balustrades.

“These three products are fantastic examples of the sort of exceptional unit performance and design freedom Super Spacer® enables,” comments Edgetech President of European Fenestration Chris Alderson.

“Its ability to seamlessly follow the contours of curved glass were essential to delivering both the desired aesthetics, but also outstanding robustness, longevity and thermal efficiency.

“All three buildings show how, even as we celebrate its 35th birthday, Super Spacer® is still making huge contributions to some of the most cuttingedge buildings on earth.”

Veka’s Omnia Wins ‘New Product Of The Year’ At The National Fenestration Awards

OMNIA, VEKA’s double-rebated, double-flush window system, was named New Product of the Year at the 2024 National Fenestration Awards (NFAs) for its innovative design and unique performance capabilities.

The NFAs, determined by industry votes, celebrated their eleventh year with a record 77,000 votes, underscoring the significance of OMNIA’s win in a competitive industry.

The release of OMNIA earlier this year was a result of four years’ worth of research and innovation intended to revolutionise the industry, offering a suite of flush systems set to transform the heritage market.

OMNIA not only satisfies the growing demand for the flush look, but the suite’s high-performance capabilities completely re-defines heritage designs, making the popular look fit for the future.

Phil Gregory, the man behind the award-winning product and VEKA’s design and development manager, said: “I am delighted that OMNIA has been named ‘New Product of the Year’ after the incredible development and design effort that led to its creation.

“OMNIA was designed with the industry in mind, helping our partners satisfy the market demand while considering the ease of production and fitting, so it is truly humbling to see it recognised by the people it will serve.”

Success at the NFAs reinforces VEKAs belief in the product suite and serves as an indicator of the suites immediate impact on the industry.

Why OMNIA?

The rise in demand for minimalistic, clean-line designs in home architecture has been complemented by a resurgence in appreciation for heritageinspired details.

VEKA noted that flush windows, with their seamless sightlines and timber-look craftsmanship, are now highly sought after across modern renovations, traditional-style new builds, and large-scale developments.

Yet, today’s homeowners and developers seek more than aesthetics - they need efficiency, durability, and low maintenance, creating a unique challenge for fabricators and installers. Flush windows, once challenging to manufacture due to their precision demands, have often been overlooked by fabricators wary of complexity. However, this market shift toward combining traditional styles with cutting-edge performance is here to stay.

VEKA’s OMNIA, a doublerebated, double-flush window suite, offers a solution to these demands by emphasising energy efficiency, durability, and streamlined installation without sacrificing heritage appeal.

The OMNIA system was crafted through four-years of research and development to satisfy a market need and revolutionise the industry.

For installers, OMNIA provides distinct advantages, from reducing on-site complexity to offering a sleek 70mm profile that simplifies installation compared to bulkier systems.

Supporting a variety of jointing techniquesincluding timber weld and VEKA’s ProJoin Gen 2 - OMNIA maintains a traditional appearance with added design flexibility, like optional drip beading.

VEKA has designed OMNIA to align with future regulations, including those set for 2025, ensuring that the suite not only meets but exceeds standards for energy and acoustic performance. This is especially relevant as homeowners increasingly prioritise energy-saving features.

With OMNIA, fabricators and installers are equipped to stay competitive, meeting the rising interest in flush systems while also delivering

energy-efficient, heritage-rich homes.

VEKA’s innovative approach allows them to meet customer expectations and future-proof their offerings, placing OMNIA as a high-performing, timeless choice in today’s competitive market.

VEKA plc is a leader in the design, development, and extrusion of PVCu door, window, and conservatory systems. Demonstrating engineering excellence for over 50 years’, it employs more than 400 people from its UK manufacturing facility based in Burnley, Lancashire, and proudly supplies the market’s most specified PVCu systems in the world.

A Huge Thank You… And The Work Goes On

Be it the National Fenestration Awards, the Oscars, or any other industry celebration, it’s become the norm for award winners to heap thanks on those who have supported them. There’s nothing wrong with this. Indeed, I want to thank everybody who has voted for elumatec, in whatever capacity. As a team, we’re thrilled by your endorsement. Thank you, thank you and thanks again.

We don’t take your support for granted. We know it isn’t guaranteed. There’s always competition and much of it is very good indeed. We might be an award-winning business, but like a Hollywood star, we’re only as good as our latest performance. That’s what we’re judged on. We have to keep doing the right things, whatever the impact of market changes, the economy or global events. There is no room for complacency. We intend to keep on impressing you with our products and our service, so the work goes on.

Commitment in a changing world

That’s understating it. To say the work goes on implies a continuation – more of the same –whereas business success depends upon the ability to adapt and change. elumatec has been a force in engineering for almost a century, but this business is different from it was when it was

founded. Our heritage and history don’t constrain us. And, perhaps controversially, a business award shouldn’t either.

I’m not negating the impact of business awards. They can be highly beneficial, raising the profile of an organisation and giving it a significant marketing boost. Awards are also important for an organisation’s employees – a reward for their effort and dedication. Awards can also help attract talent to a business. Furthermore, the act of entering a business award can prompt a thorough review of performance, allowing management to step away from day-to-day operations and consider the business with some distance. The real objective

Let’s imagine a business that’s just won an award. Its strategy worked – it delivered its customers’ needs. Its service was excellent. So, in the following year, it sticks to the same strategy. This time the business takes the runner-up position in the awards. The business blames a more challenging economy and sticks to its reliable approach. The following year, the business doesn’t make it onto the shortlist. It’s doing the same things, but customer needs have changed, expected service standards are higher, and its competitors have caught up.

If something fundamental needs to change to ensure long-term results, that’s where the company’s effort needs to be directed. It shouldn’t be thrown at attempts to convince dissatisfied customers to vote for something they used to like but which no longer serves their needs. Putting it another way, a business should aim to deliver the best possible performance rather than targeting the trophy.

Of course, if they get it right, they might well earn that trophy.

Defining success

Which brings me to a question: How do you judge success? Is success the endorsement of a panel of judges who have studied your award entry and found it compelling? Or is it something deeper?

The answer could be different for every business. It could be financial gain. It could be an increased market share. It could be bringing a new product

to market. It could be addressing a long-standing problem with talent retention or the successful implementation of manufacturing technology. Success depends on where you are and what you’re working towards.

Success is the product of a clear but flexible vision. It takes real effort: persistence, leadership and teamwork. It takes a willingness to put yourselves in the shoes of your customers – and your suppliers – and understand their priorities and needs. It takes a culture that respects individuals and their unique talents and helps them to thrive. It also takes time.

An award – the endorsement of industry stakeholders – is a tangible and very welcome sign that you’re on the right track. But remember, success is also the delivery of value, partnership and support to customers over the long term. That’s what we’re working for.

Glasscraft: Crafting Success With Innovation, Dedication, And Growth

In a remarkable year for Glasscraft, winning the NFA IGU Manufacturer of the Year award marks not just an achievement but a testament to the values, hard work, and dedication the team embodies every day. With a reputation for quality and commitment to customer relationships, Glasscraft’s approach to manufacturing has set it apart in a competitive industry. This year’s win, however, is especially sweet, underscoring a period of growth highlighted by the strategic acquisition of Liverpool-based Hytech Glass and the strengthening of the business in the North West market.

Carla Hewitt, Operations Director said:

“Winning the NFA IGU Manufacturer of the Year award is an incredible honour for the entire Glasscraft team. This award is especially meaningful because it’s nominated and voted for by our peers and customers, reflecting the trust and respect

we’ve worked so hard to build. It’s a true testament to our team’s dedication, hands-on approach, and commitment to exceptional service. Knowing that our industry and clients value what we do inspires us to keep pushing forward, strengthening our relationships, and delivering even greater value in the years to come.”

Growth and Expansion: A New Chapter

Earlier this year, Glasscraft proudly welcomed Hytech Glass into the family. Established over 20 years ago and deeply rooted in Liverpool, Hytech has long been a trusted name in sealed unit manufacturing. For Glasscraft, this acquisition was a natural fit; Hytech’s dedication to service and quality mirrored Glasscraft’s values, and its strategic location opened new avenues to better serve customers across the North West.

With the acquisition of Hytech Glass, Glasscraft has gained a substantial 31,000 sq ft facility in Aintree, adding critical production capacity and retaining a skilled, locally knowledgeable team. To support this growth and meet increasing demand, Glasscraft has expanded the Liverpool team through strategic recruitment, enhancing its ability to serve North West clients. Investments have been made across

the board—exceeding £1 million—to upgrade manufacturing equipment, extend production space, add new storage facilities, and modernise office areas. These upgrades enable faster, more efficient production while preserving key customer relationships and reinforcing Glasscraft’s commitment to quality and continuity in every aspect of its operations.

Quality and Service:

The Heart

of Glasscraft’s

Process

At the core of Glasscraft’s success is a commitment to craftsmanship that begins with each individual in the production process. Every member of the team brings a “hands-on” approach, ensuring attention to detail at each step. From facilities in Leeds, Wakefield, and now Liverpool, Glasscraft is proud to operate a streamlined and effective manufacturing process across multiple locations, consistently producing high quality, sealed glass

units, processed glass and specialist finishes.

This way of working that impacts every part of the Glasscraft team’s daily activities. Transparency and open communication drive every customer interaction, making sure that clients know what to expect and feel confident in the end product. From order placement to delivery, Glasscraft’s team prioritises positive, long lasting relationships, which means that clients know they’re not just purchasing glass—they’re receiving the support and service that make a difference.

Expansion in the North West

The addition of Hytech Glass has brought more than just space and equipment to the table. For

Glasscraft, the acquisition strengthens its North West presence by providing an experienced team that understands the region’s specific needs and market demands. As demand for quality insulated glass units continues to grow, Glasscraft’s increased capacity allows the company to better serve both new and established customers, offering a wider product range, greater flexibility, and enhanced service in the North West.

Future Plans

This has been a year of growth and achievement for Glasscraft, one that has underscored the strength of the company’s values and its commitment to quality and service. Winning the NFA IGU

Manufacturer of the Year award is a milestone, reflecting the dedication of Glasscraft’s entire team and the successful expansion into Liverpool.

This signals a bright future, with plans for further investment and growth. With the combined strength of three thriving facilities, a skilled workforce, and a loyal customer base, Glasscraft is well positioned for continued success. As the company looks ahead, its focus remains clear: maintaining the hands-on approach and commitment to excellence that earned it this prestigious award and ensuring every customer can count on the quality, care, and expertise that have become synonymous with the Glasscraft name.

Bob Norris, Managing Director, said

“Our recent investment and expansion marks a significant step in Glasscraft’s growth journey. By expanding our team, modernising infrastructure, and enhancing our production capabilities, we’re strengthening our foundation to deliver even greater efficiency and quality. Looking to 2025 and beyond, we have ambitious plans to continue growing our reach and capabilities, always with a focus on providing top-tier products and exceptional service to our customers. This expansion sets us up for a future full of opportunities, and we couldn’t be more excited.”

This is just the beginning of an exciting journey, and for Glasscraft, the future has never looked brighter.

Planned Homeowner Spend On Home Improvement Projects In 2025 Covered In Latest Keystone Consumer Report

Keystone Market Research is excited to announce the release of its highly anticipated Autumn 2024 Consumer Fenestration Trends Report, a comprehensive analysis that offers unprecedented insights into homeowner preferences, spending plans, and trends within the fenestration and home improvement sectors. With input from over 5,600 homeowners collected through multiple surveys conducted this year, this report is the most extensive of its kind and promises to be an essential tool for businesses looking to stay ahead of market trends.

The Autumn report uncovers how homeowner preferences have evolved throughout 2024, providing detailed insights into materials and styles for windows, doors, and conservatory roofs, as well as glazing options. The report also covers homeowner investment priorities and anticipated spend for 2025, comparing it to spending trends from 2023 and 2024. The industry has experienced a wave of challenges as post-pandemic home improvement surges have settled, and this report aims to help businesses understand the trajectory for next year.

In addition to spend analysis, the Autumn report highlights key shifts in home project priorities for next year and beyond, with prospects for fenestration looking positive both in homeowners’ short and long-term plans. Replacement doors are a key focus for short to mid-term projects, with windows emerging as a long-term priority.

Charlotte Hawkes, owner and director at Keystone explains further: “Despite the continuing economic challenges it’s been positive to see homeowners plans to continue investing in their homes. Interestingly, younger homeowners are leading the charge in planned home improvement spending next year, with 36% of this group planning

to increase their budgets in 2025, compared to just 17% of older homeowners.

“Throughout the year, we’ve also seen a notable reduction in the number of “no preference” responses from homeowners, indicating that consumers are becoming increasingly decisive about their choices in fenestration products. Our reports seek to help the industry to understand these preferences and adapt their strategies and marketing to make the most of the opportunities available next year.”

Keystone is also proud to share that their work in delivering cutting-edge consumer & market insights and bespoke research services has earned them a finalist spot for Best Business Initiative at the prestigious G24 Awards. This recognition underscores their commitment to providing businesses in fenestration reliable and actionable research products, which have become a trusted resource for companies throughout the industry.

Fantastic Four: REHAU’s Superb Win At National Fenestration Awards 2024

As well as being named ‘Systems Company of The Year’, REHAU also walked away with the title of ‘Best Use of Video’, Cemlyn Griffiths was the deserved winner of ‘Young Person of the Year’, and the company picked up a ‘Special Recognition’ award.

Systems Company of The Year

The ‘Systems Company of the Year’ accolade recognises REHAU’s consistency and innovation as a premium provider of fenestration systems in the industry. Over the past year, REHAU has launched its largest window system to date - ARTEVO. The system was designed to give architects, designers, and specifiers the opportunity to incorporate windows that maximise natural light with all the performance benefits of polymer.

Using the RAU-FIPRO-X material as its basis, REHAU has redefined what’s possible in terms of size, production efficiency and originality from polymer window systems. ARTEVO responds to the growing demand (and evidence-based research) for more natural light in both home and workplaces, allowing the built environment to develop and accommodate to changing behaviours.

It’s this growing ‘appetite for light’ that led REHAU to launch another new solution this year – the SLINOVA sliding door. The product responds to the latest home interior trends and design demands, allowing consumers to choose from 20 colour combination finishes that can be matched to the inside and outside of the property. SLINOVA’s large glazed area and array of configuration options have put flexibility and choice, for both consumers and installers, at the heart of this new range of solutions.

This commitment to making the lives of fenestration professionals easier is also what led the company to launch its new webshop. Designed to help facilitate access to system accessories and other in-demand items on request, the webshop went live in Q1 of this year. It also forms part of REHAU’s efforts to streamline the existing order process for components, further reinforcing its position as a holistic systems and solutions provider that industry professionals can rely on.

Best Use of Video

REHAU was also the recipient of ‘Best Use of Video’ at this year’s ceremony. Here, Stephen Beresford, Head of Marketing at REHAU, comments on winning the award:

“Without our amazing partners, REHAU Window Solutions would not have received this fantastic award. Our ongoing efforts to put engaging video content at the heart of REHAU’s marketing strategy can only be made possible by the exceptional windows being made by brilliant businesses for some of the finest buildings out there.

“We think these inspirational stories of craftsmanship and teamwork deserve to be told. The Epsom Hospital case study is one that instantly springs to mind. Through the medium of video, we were able to clearly tell the story of how we supported Epsom Hospital with a major overhaul using our curtain walling system. From the design stage through to completion, this was a monumental effort from all involved and without

the access we were granted during filming, we wouldn’t have been able to share this success with the industry and beyond.

“Case studies like this, and another which we filmed with Midpoint Windows, also shine a spotlight on REHAU products. Our market-leading products speak for themselves in these projects and it’s what our fabricators and partners are always excited to talk about.

“People are at the heart of our videos. It’s their relatability, honesty and dedication to the craft which comes across in the content and makes for a great piece of marketing. The relationships REHAU has forged with partners and fabricators across the years is evident in the praise we receive and the way we’re spoken highly of. It’s always fantastic to showcase these strong partnerships, like the one we have with Lutley Windows Ltd, with our videos. We are honoured that we can simply hit record and let our fabricators do the talking. This award is for everyone involved; without you we wouldn’t be able to make such impactful content.”

Young Person of The Year

Here, Cem Griffiths, Windows Solutions Sales Coordinator at REHAU, talks about winning the ‘Young Person of The Year’ award:

“Wow, what a night! It was fantastic to be a part of such a special evening celebrating REHAU’s success in the fenestration industry and to walk away with an award of my own was incredible.

“I grew up close to REHAU’s Blaenau Ffestiniog factory and learnt my trade as a carpenter fitting windows. Then I saw there were opportunities available to me through REHAU which interested me. Their family ownership and focus on employee wellbeing is what initially drew me in. Joining such a big company when you live somewhere so small can be quite daunting, but the REHAU family makes you feel at ease from the start.

“Originally, I started within the factory at Blaenau Ffestiniog, moving between different departments before eventually moving to our Manchester Sales Office. Currently, my role is an IDM internal account manager, which means I deal with the day-to-day workings of customers.

“From the beginning of my REHAU journey, the team have supported me and focused on my development. This award is a result of the continuing professional development that I have benefited from during my career at REHAU. The company is very committed to nurturing its talent. I hope I can inspire the next generation to consider a role in the ever-changing fenestration industry. You never know where it might take you, and you might even pick up an award!”

Special Recognition – 75 Years of REHAU

REHAU also received a prestigious recognition to celebrate its 75-year anniversary. Here, Martin Hitchin, CEO of REHAU, explains what over seven decades of REHAU has looked like:

“Founded in 1948 in Germany, REHAU began as a small company focused on the production of plastic products. Over the decades, we evolved into a global leader in polymer-based solutions, particularly in the fenestration, construction, and automotive industries. The UK base of REHAU was established in 1983, marking a significant step in our company’s international expansion.

“With a commitment to innovation and sustainability, REHAU has introduced numerous groundbreaking products and technologies that enhance quality of life and promote environmental responsibility. Today, we operate in over 50 countries and employ thousands of dedicated professionals worldwide. The company’s rich history reflects a steadfast dedication to quality, customer satisfaction, and the continuous pursuit of excellence in all our endeavours.

“Here’s to the next 75 years!”

The new hardware colours will be available across pole eyes, tilt knobs, sash lifts, sash locks, and travel restrictors - all standard features of Victorian Sliders’ ECOSlide sash windows. D handles will also be available in the new colourways.

What sets this development apart is that the hardware is designed and manufactured by Sash Hardware (Foshan) Ltd, a key component of the Victorian House Window Group alongside Victorian Sliders. This unique structure gives Victorian Sliders a significant advantage in the sash window market.

Jason Powell, Operational Director, explained: “Our integration with Sash Hardware (Foshan) provides us with unparalleled control over our supply chain and product development. This means we can respond quickly to market demands and ensure consistent quality across our range. It’s a benefit that directly translates to better service and products for our installers.”

This expansion of the hardware range is part of Victorian Sliders’ ongoing commitment to innovation and growth. Victorian Sliders has embarked on a journey of transformation the past couple of years, investing in state-of-theart manufacturing facilities and sustainability initiatives.

Notable among these is the company’s PVC recycling plant at their 240,000 square foot factory in Ammanford, Wales. This facility has enabled Victorian Sliders to recycle 100% of their postindustrial waste, reduce their landfill waste by 75%, and cut virgin material use by 30%.

The introduction of these new hardware colours, coupled with Victorian Sliders’ unique supply chain advantage and commitment to sustainability, further cements the company’s position as a market leader in the PVCu sash window sector. A motorised liftslide drive that meets the most demanding requirements for functionality and design

SIEGENIA is expanding the range of options available to fabricators, architects and end users with a new

motorised drive for highend residential and commercial buildings, which also meets the requirements of DIN 18040 for accessibility. The DRIVE axxent LS boasts a powerful combination of style and functionality. The greatest strength of this new solution for lift-and-slide elements, which meets even the most exacting demands when it comes to room comfort, is the possibility of concealed installation in sashes made using any frame

material. For the first time ever, this now also includes the slide drive in addition to the lift drive. Unlike before, the DRIVE axxent LS does not require any surface-mounted components that don’t match in colour or any extra covers. The result is absolute aesthetic perfection.

Compact and therefore suitable for slim profile systems, too

Thanks to their extremely compact design, both the lift drive and the slide drive are even suitable for use with narrow profile systems, further accentuating the design. The other features of the

DRIVE axxent LS also deliver room comfort. The discreet operating button is visually appealing –the only thing on the element that hints to the fact this is a motorised solution. The function light integrated in the button provides a high level of operational reliability. The significantly reduced lifting time of just under 3 seconds is also particularly impressive, and the sliding action has been significantly improved to minimise noise compared with the previous solution. This makes the DRIVE axxent LS a genuinely convenient solution, as does the practical battery pack menu, which provides access to custom settings.

benefit from the fast and fail-safe fabrication process, which takes just 20 minutes longer than for manually operated elements. All of the components, including the pre-charged battery pack, are delivered ready for assembly in the exact size and quantity required – all in a single package. Another practical feature is the frame construction, which is identical to that of manually operated elements. This ensures that familiar processes can continue to be used and makes for lean warehousing.

Installation of the drives and battery pack in the element is also extremely well thought out: at the heart of the system is the battery pack, which is fitted with long-life Li-Ion batteries and is positioned as an extension of the gear. The entire installation process is incredibly simple and can be done without any electrical training. This is only

necessary for connecting the 24V system to the building’s electrical system.

This recognition is particularly special as the awards are decided entirely by votes from industry peers, consolidating UAP’s position at the forefront of the door and window hardware sector.

By testing the “click in” system components alongside the profiles from the systems house, any necessary adjustments or fine-tuning can be made at Winkhaus to optimise performance and reliability, meeting the precise requirements of the system. This collaborative testing process not only enhances the integration process but also ensures that the final product meets the highest standards of quality and performance.

Technical Development Days represent an innovative approach to product development, providing partners with an opportunity to commission new products, enhance existing ones, or appraise to new standards. During these development days, Winkhaus’ technical and laboratories’ seasoned experts guide customers through the intricacies of testing, offering insights into potential vulnerabilities or failure points before official testing commences.

Ade Collins, Laboratory Manager at Winkhaus UK, emphasised the significance of these services, stating, “Traditional testing outcomes often end with a pass or fail result, which can significantly impede development progress. Technical Development Days mitigate these setbacks by enabling iterative design adjustments without the time and cost constraints associated with formal testing.”

“When it comes to innovation, and creating bespoke products, a quick turnaround will provide a real benefit to our customers and the roll-out of their products. Our team works together with customers to get them to market as quickly as possible, providing them with a significant competitive advantage.”

UAP Records 15th Successive Year Of Revenue Growth

UAP Ltd, a Manchester-based door hardware specialist, has announced revenue of £28.4 million for its latest financial year, marking its 15th consecutive year of revenue growth.

UAP Ltd revenues grew by more than a third in the year to April 2024, driven by both the acquisitions of Security Hardware in December 2022 and Maher London in January 2023, and by organic growth which included the launch of a new business line, Fire Door Maintenance (FDM).

industry,

a 3,000 sq ft collaborative setting for fire door inspectors, installers, and maintainers, that blends theory with hands-on experience.

UAP Ltd also licensed Armadillo Metal Coatings’s Armasmart technology earlier this year which resulted in the launch of the industry’s first door hardware range to eliminate 99.98% of viruses, including COVID-19. The revolutionary patented anti-viral and anti-microbial technology addresses the limitations of traditional stainless steel by reducing the risk of germ transmission – preventing tarnishing and corrosion – and promotes a safer,

FDM is a specialist business that offers fire door inspection, maintenance services, and fire door safety training that ensures component maintenance and application always meet safety standards. In 2023, FDM established the UK’s first practical training centre for the fire door

cleaner environment which is vital in health, care, commercial and residential settings. The success of Armasmart is a direct reflection of UAP Ltd’s constant drive to innovate to ensure it is always one step ahead of customers’ needs –using technology and deep research to develop game-changing products that drive progress in the industry.

From starting in its founder’s spare room to moving to two separate sites across the UK, UAP Ltd’s period of rapid growth saw the business make the strategic

decision to consolidate its operations, following a £750,000 investment, into a single 120,000 sq ft headquarters in Bury, Greater Manchester. The new facility has significantly improved operational efficiency, enabling streamlined order fulfilment with stockholding capacity increased by more than double, facilitating improved customer satisfaction and service delivery. The business has in turn strengthened its resilience

by expanding its supply chain team in India and maximising economies of scale with suppliers.

Stephen Cox, Group Commercial Director at UAP Ltd, said: “We’ve had an incredible year at

UAP.

While our scale has grown dramatically, our core values have remained constant. We are committed to delivering innovative door hardware solutions that cater to the evolving needs of our customers, equipping them to navigate the ever-changing fire and security landscape. Each client, each market, and every single interaction is of paramount importance to us. Our drive to excel fuels everything we do.”

UAP Ltd are enjoying continued awards success,

including at the 2024 National Fenestration Awards. FDM’s practical training centre won “Training Centre of the Year”, and UAP also won the “Hardware Company of the Year” award. UAP Ltd was also recently named “Supplier of the Year” at the 2024 London Construction Awards and was nominated for “Outstanding Business of the Year” at the upcoming This is Manchester Awards.

VBH Loves Football

The team at VBH loves football, and the company is proud to have supported a number of teams down the years at various levels.

They are currently involved with two clubs in England, and another in Scotland.

In the north VBH have recently supplied shirts for Rossvale FC. Based in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, Rossvale is one of the largest football community clubs in Scotland, with around 800 men, women, boys, and girls registered to play.

The club was originally set up in 1976 and has been serving the community ever since. The Under 15s are sporting VBH/greenteQ shirt sponsorship this season.

Rossvale U15s have started the season well, with a long unbeaten run and have made it to the League Cup final.

Moving further south, VBH is the Match Ball sponsor of Sutton United FC, who are currently consolidating their position in the Midlands Football League Division 1 after consecutive promotions as champions of Divisions 3 and 2 in 2022 and 2023.

Based in Sutton Coldfield, Sutton United is another large organisation, with 45 teams for men, women, boys, and girls competing across the east and west midlands.

VBH is now in its second year as a Business Club Partner of EFL League 2 Gillingham FC, whose Priestfield Stadium ground is just a stone’s throw from VBH’s head office. The company is also a regular Match Day Sponsor of The Gills, with six matches booked already this season, including the new year ‘local’ derby against newly promoted Bromley.

VBH Marketing Manager Gary Gleeson says: “As part of our deal, our greenteQ logo is often seen travelling around the state-of-the-art LED perimeter advertising, so if you can tear your eyes away from the Brian Moore stand, Priestfield’s ‘iconic’ temporary away supporters scaffold, look out for greenteQ on the EFL shows this season. Come on you Gills!”

Good luck to all three clubs this season.

6 Not Out For greenteQ Patio Door

Gear

VBH, the company behind the greenteQ hardware brand, has increased the reach of its Clearslide inline sliding patio door lock by adding two additional systems to its profile compatibility list.

Following requests from a number of fabricators, VBH’s new development gives manufacturers of Liniar and Eurocell PVCu sliding doors access to the popular Clearslide 8-hook patio lock.

The new solutions sit beside the existing hardware for Deceuninck, Kömmerling, Rehau and Veka PVCu sliding doors.

The lock and keep are produced using hardwearing stainless steel and are covered by a 10-year guarantee.

VBH advise that the eight hooks and two antilift pins ensure that Clearslide locks provide an extraordinarily strong connection to the frame. The lock meets the requirements of all relevant security standards and is covered by Kitemark KM727991 (Building Hardware used in Windows & Doorsets).

Clearslide locks can be operated by the greenteQ Alpha Patio P-Handle, which boasts a 10-year greenteQ surface guarantee on all ten finishes.

VBH suggest that installations near the coast may benefit from the architeQ Coastline stainless steel handle set that is back up by a 25-year surface guarantee, again on all finishes.

Alpha and Coastline are interchangeable so upgrading when required is easy.

VBH marketing manager, Gary Gleeson, says; “Clearslide is an integral part of our Lifestyle range of patio door hardware, and is extremely popular with fabricators and installers of the four original launch profiles. We received a number of requests from Liniar and Eurocell users who wanted to use Clearslide on their doors. The figures stacked up, so we were delighted to expand the range.

“Our New Product Development Team is currently looking at more Clearslide solutions, so we’re not done yet!”

Improving Your Image

Selecta Systems Marketing Manager, Mark Walker and Lesley Edgar, Managing Director at 3D visualisation provider Red and Gray Ltd, talk about the use of CGI imagery and new the advancements in AI technology within the fenestration industry.

In today’s digital world, it is common knowledge that 3D visualisation is firmly entrenched as a wellused tool to make advertising any product easier and less expensive to manage. However, not all CGI is good CGI. In the same essence not all AI composite is good AI composite.

Mark comments, “Selecta have always been big advocates of CGI and the use of AI technology. Over the years we have outsourced our CGI requirements to Red and Gray of whom we have built an excellent working partnership with. Providing a quality service in both CGI and AI technology, it became clear that Red and Gray have a strong wealth of experience when it came to windows and doors. They have become very popular within the fenestration industry as their knowledge of the products is second to none, adding that to their first-class ability in CGI and AI imagery, they offer the perfect solution to our

marketing needs”.

“Our latest projects have included CGI generated product animations and images. Using this technology has taken our marketing support offerings to a new level, allowing ourselves to get the best visual representation of our products and their surroundings. The MASTERslide Patio Door and ADVANCE 70 Flush Sash Window animations have been a huge success with our customers, providing them with a quality product sales tool of which can be branded to their personal requirements”.

Selecta have embraced the skills of the Red and Gray team, which in turn has not just helped them provide additional marketing support to their customers, but also boosted their marketing campaigns across various platforms.

Lesley says, “We love working with Mark and the team, they have a great understanding of what is

needed to get the right message across to their working partners. Companies can sometimes ‘cut corners’ by using poor imagery, whilst being totally unaware just how much damage this can do to their brand. It’s fantastic that Selecta recognise this and the benefits of embracing CGI and the use of AI technology”.

“When a fenestration company offers top quality products, many with important key features, its vital they don’t overlook the

“Why sell high quality products without matching imagery? Is it cost, the opinion of the person signing off the marketing images, or something else? The most important aspect of any marketing imagery is how do you want your potential customers to see your product? Art/illustration is the door to the clients wallet, it’s all about selling a dream or an aspiration to own that product, so the most accurate, attractive yet inspiring images are

importance of investment in quality imagery to reflect the essence and characteristics of their brand and its values. From windows and doors to handles, tracks and even hinges, time and money has been given to research and develop all these products, but many are then advertised with poor quality images, the detail in every image is key “you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression”.

our priority”.

Red and Gray offer a full inhouse range of design, CGI, animation, configurators, AR and VR services, as well as the new AI technology, which is now being used by many of their clients. Having been established since 2001, the business has become the go-to for digital image services. So, how can

from good CGI?

Lesley says, “Having the best imagery is more important than ever. “Many businesses don’t have time/space to photograph their products without the massive expense of hiring a studio or bespoke location, sending staff to manage the project, hiring a photographer, installing the product or building an appropriate set, the list goes on”.

We now live in a world where everything is fast paced and visual, scrolling on autopilot. Imagery is everything, it needs to be eye catching and relevant, otherwise it won’t last for more than a second on screen. As with any service provider there is a cost for good CGI imagery or AI composition.

However, Lesley added that the reality is much more cost efficient than you might think. “Clients often worry about the cost of digital imagery. The reality is, compared with traditional photography and set building, its inexpensive, its flexible and we keep up with all the current trends so can advise on the best way to showcase your products.”

“All 3D sets, geometry and final images we create for our clients are archived so can be used again

with a change of product, updated style or décor, or even a different window or door. By reusing an existing set, you can have a whole new image for a fraction of the cost and the time. This is something that Selecta took advantage of, when showcasing both the MASTERslide Patio Doors and the ADVANCE 70 Flush Sash Windows”.

The world is changing. AI and CGI are fast becoming the future for any business. Most buyers are not interested in the detail until they are ready to buy, so it is all about an image being good enough to make the customer stop and take notice.

Mark concludes, “We have been delighted with how Red and Gray managed and delivered on all of our expectations. They have enhanced the visual appeal and representation of our products and options, of which in turn provides added benefits to our working partners. We look forward to working with Lesley and the team again on our next and future projects”.

Energy Efficiency For U

Energy efficient products remain a big driver for sales, with homeowners, architects and developers looking to improve a home’s thermal performance thus reducing energy usage and bills. Selecta Systems Technical Manager, Cliff Prosser, explains the company’s philosophy behind ensuring that any new developments and enhancements continue to be fabricator and installer friendly, whilst also being as cost effective as is possible.

Window and door companies have the ideal opportunity to promote the energy efficiency of their products as one of the main USP’s. Whether this being new build projects or replacing ageing and tired windows and doors, there is a necessity and requirement to improve a homes thermal efficiency and reduce energy bills. The latest and future revisions to Building Regulations Document Part L and the Future Homes Standard (FHS) provides companies with a strong legislative platform for promoting the thermal performance of windows and doors within the

With the recent and future changes to Part L and the FHS, coupled with further calls for action on climate control and sustainability, our industry remains under pressure to further develop product energy efficiency innovation and sustainability. These changes have seen Selecta provide further investment in our research and development programme, working closely with ER Certification and Clayton Glass. These partnerships have led to some truly exceptional results with some very efficient and cost-effective solutions attained.

The objective of our energy efficiency and sustainability R&D programme has been to continue to provide fabricators and installers with an effective and easily attainable solution, that meets and exceeds current and future requirements. This philosophy has seen our existing ADVANCE 70 system capable of achieving a U value of 1.1W/m²k with a 4/20/4, 28mm double glazed unit. Again, incorporating 4mm glass, a 40mm triple glazed unit will achieve a U value of 0.8 W/m²k, meeting the proposed FHS target. All this has been achieved without any further modifications of our ADVANCE 70 system and very much standardised glass specifications.

We realise the fact that the FHS final intended 0.8 W/m²k U value requirement will pose a significant challenge to many in our industry. These planned tighter regulations may indicate that some products on the market may have already or be close to reaching their design limits of their product range.

This is why we are extremely pleased that our continued investment in our R&D programme has clearly demonstrated the excellent technical and thermal capabilities of our ADVANCE 70 system in current and future market conditions. Along the way, we have been able to retain the company ethos on providing fabricators, installers and consumers with the most innovative, proficient and cost-effective energy efficient window and door solutions on the market.

We firmly believe that by partnering with Selecta and our ADVANCE 70 system, our excellent thermal performance ratings present fabricators and installers with greater sales and marketing opportunities. The future proofed ADVANCE 70 window and door system, combined with our first-class marketing and technical support package certainly provides you with the tools to generate new sales leads and win new business.

Listers Add Sheerline’s Classic Heritage Door To Easy Connect Software

Sheerline’s high-quality Classic Heritage Door has been added to Easy Connect, Listers’ quick quoting software. It’s available to Listers installers 24/7, 365 days a year and is designed to streamline the quotation process.

As one of Sheerline’s key fabricator partners, Listers has been supplying the innovative aluminium range since it was launched. They recently added the Classic Heritage Door for several reasons.

First, there was significant demand from Listers’ customers for a steel-look, heritage product that looked great while offering compliant U-values. Second, this style of product is on trend, particularly in black, which is being driven by contemporary renovation shows.

Third, it’s a highly versatile product. It can be installed as an external or internal door – with the latter becoming popular as homeowners look to partition their living space. The style lends itself to ultra-modern developments with exposed brickwork and steel features.

But it also provides the perfect solution for sympathetic restoration projects within a conservation area. Now available for quick quotes via Easy Connect, installers can generate instant quotes any time, from anywhere.

The software is exclusively available for Listers installers and offers many benefits including access to instant prices updated in real time. It’s

free to use and enables customers to personalise their quotes with their own branding, and they can add specific pricing as required.

It’s the ideal solution for busy installers who want to maintain their competitive edge as it saves time and allows them to offer responsive quotes to homeowners, making the most of every opportunity.

Listers’ Regional Sales Director, Rob Waller, said: “The Classic Heritage Door has been very well received, and we expected nothing less given the appetite for this style of product. Now it’s on Easy Connect, we expect it to become even more popular as our installers can generate quotes instantly.”

Tony Basile, Sheerline’s National Sales Director, commented: “Adding our Classic Heritage Door to Easy Connect reflects the evolution of the relationship between Listers and Sheerline – two companies committed to providing the highest quality products and customer experience.”

The Classic Heritage Door is on display in Listers’ showroom, contact the Listers team today on 08006 343 110 to make an appointment to view it.

Sheerline Voted Aluminium Systems Company Of The Year By Industry Peers At National Fenestration Awards 2024

Sheerline is celebrating after receiving the coveted title of Aluminium Systems Company of the Year at this year’s National Fenestration Awards. It’s a significant win for several reasons; first it was a competitive category, with 12 other well-known systems houses competing for the award.

Second, the awards are peer-nominated, which highlights the impact Sheerline has made and continues to make across the industry in a relatively short space of time – the brand turns five next year, and this is just the beginning.

This is in-line with the company’s vision to innovate and reenergise the aluminium sector. Third, this year’s awards were the most competitive yet, with over 77,000 votes cast in total across 34 categories that reached the whole of the fenestration industry.

For Sheerline, being named Aluminium Systems Company of the Year demonstrates what is achievable when a company has the right vision, leadership, and investment strategy in place. This combination, plus experience and innovative thinking, has enabled the brand to succeed.

It has set itself apart by launching a whole-house window and door solution that perfectly matches, offering security and exceptional thermal performance as standard. In addition, it offers

high-quality training, on-going support, and firstclass customer service.

It recently launched a new initiative offering reliable five-day lead times across its traditional colour range. In addition, 64 colour combinations are available in ten days, and special or bespoke colour choices are available in 15 days to fabricator customers.

Roger Hartshorn, Sheerline CEO, commented: “Thank you to everyone in the industry who took the time to vote for Sheerline. It proves that our approach to aluminium and customer service is working. Just because things have been done a particular way in the past, doesn’t mean things can’t change for the better.”

“Many of our newest fabricator partners have switched to Sheerline because they are fed up with subpar customer service, made up U-values, and products that don’t work as they should. That’s why Sheerline offers a different approach to aluminium,” he added.

To find out more about becoming a Sheerline fabricator partner, call the team today on 01332 978 000 or email: info@sheerline.com – it’s aluminium, but not as you know it.

Sheerline Launches Comprehensive Specification Guide

Sheerline has launched its new Specification Guide for fabricators, installers, and architects. At 170 pages, this comprehensive overview of the UK’s most innovative aluminium range features everything specifiers need to help them find the right product.

As well as an introduction to the Sheerline system and its benefits, it also details how being a vertically integrated manufacturer enables it to offer an agile and responsive service. Putting the key details for specifiers and those tendering for large-scale commercial projects at the reader’s fingertips.

This includes style options, sightlines, colours, and foil options as well as the technology behind Thermlock® and how it ensures all products are easily Part L compliant. Several of Sheerline’s innovative solutions are also highlighted, such as the Prestige Reverse Butt Joint.

This is ideal for commercial projects as customers can specify fully internally glazed aluminium windows, with no need for dummy sashes, and simplified installation. Also included is an overview of the current Building Regulations that apply to

the fenestration industry.

Tony Basile, Sheerline’s National Sales Director, said: “Part of our commitment as a brand is to make life easier for our fabricator partners. Not only will our Spec Guide simplify things for our existing partners, but it will help prospective customers tendering for commercial projects.”

“It has been a real labour of love for the marketing and R&D teams, and they’ve done a fantastic job of bringing our products to life in brilliant detail. It’s a significant milestone for us as a company, and shows where we are headed,” he added.

Sheerline has already received positive feedback from customers including HWL Windows, who said: “This will be an invaluable tool for our sales team and training on Sheerline.”

Copies of Sheerline’s Specification Guide are making their way to existing customers and will be arriving on their orders soon. Anyone interested in receiving a copy should email: commercial@ sheerline.com with their request.

“Switching To Sheerline? It’s One Of The Best Decisions I’ve Ever Made” – Windowise

Founded in 1997, Windowise (Phoenix Windows) has been fabricating aluminium products alongside PVCu systems since it launched. However, earlier this year, the company made the decision to switch to Sheerline after receiving “horrendous” service from their previous supplier.

The company chose Sheerline over other systems houses for several reasons. The quality of the materials supplied, and the innovative products played a role, but so did the high-quality personal service that was promised and has consistently been delivered.

This was especially important to the Windowise team. With their previous supplier, there was minimal in-person contact with their sales rep and no support on a day-to-day basis, which is where Sheerline differentiates itself from its competitors.

For instance, there’s a dedicated technical team who provide day-to-day support, training provided as standard for new products, and regular calls and in-person meetings with sales reps and other Sheerline team members.

The other key difference in this scenario is Sheerline’s ability to deliver the promises it makes. This extends beyond innovative products and delivery lead times to technical product information, such as U-values.

Sheerline prides itself on offering transparency around its products and their capabilities. For instance, the company’s independently verified U-value reports for their whole product range are freely available – giving customers absolute confidence that what they sell complies.

Andy McCord, Windowise Managing Director, said: “I think everyone knows, you don’t swap suppliers for no reason – it’s a big undertaking to switch. But the constant false promises and letting me down meant I was letting my customers down. It was the service and delivery – it was horrendous, and there was no sign of it getting better. So, I took the plunge and swapped suppliers.”

“With Sheerline, it’s the complete opposite – it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made,” he added.

As the company has found a trusted aluminium partner they can rely on, they’re focusing on realising their ambitious growth plans. This includes fabricating and installing new Sheerline products as and when they are launched.

Martin Hepburn, Area Sales Manager for the West Midlands, South Wales and Southwest, commented: “When we first talked to Andy and the team, it was clear they were having real issues with their previous supplier – the kind of issues that Sheerline was launched to address.”

“For us, it’s not just about innovative products, but top-quality service, training, and support to show customers there’s another option to the one offered by legacy systems houses,” he added.

Let’s Be Honest…

We made a simple promise on thermal performance. That all our products would meet the upcoming tightened Part L regulations introduced in the 2022 revision to Building Regulations.

We achieved this by developing our own thermal break technology, Thermlock®.

Wider, multi-chambered and less conductive than legacy polyamide systems, Thermlock®, which sits at the heart of all Sheerline products enabled our customers to sell an easily understood range with consistent U-values that met these new targets with straightforward glazing requirements.

Our values are calculated to the EN14351 and BRFC standards, at the prescribed sizes and simulated with realistic combination of profiles and glazing that our customers actually use. All to give anyone choosing Sheerline aluminium products complete confidence.

Previously having operated in the PVCu market –this straightforward approach, this ‘honesty’ comes as second nature to us. In fact, when we started operating in the aluminium sector, we were a bit aghast at how murky, obfuscating and sometimes downright dishonest some claims were.

It’s time to change all that. That’s why we are calling for a tightening of standards and want to challenge our fellow systems companies to make their U-value reports publicly available, as we have. It’s time people know clearly what they are buying, as it’s their necks on the line.

Our challenge to the industry

• Publish independently verified U-value reports. As well as having two BRFC accredited thermal simulators in house, Sheerline also gets its U-value reports independently verified, which should be the gold standard across the industry.

It’s time industry bodies and building regulations made this compulsory.

• Stop selling products that don’t conform. The market tells us that many aluminium systems companies are paying lip service to these tighter thermal standards – claiming U-values based on a very ‘niche’ specification that rarely or never gets manufactured, then blithely carries on selling products they know don’t conform. It’s time that stopped too.

• Be honest and take responsibility. From systems companies ‘fabricating’ their U-value reports, to turning a blind eye to what their fabricators are making, to fabricators claiming U-values based on a spec of product they aren’t actually making. Everyone involved needs to take ownership and responsibility, making sure the companies supplying them are being honest and have the evidence to back up their claims.

We are heartened that other voices in the industry are beginning to pay at least lip service to bringing clarity to the subject of U-values in aluminium. Although as the tighter new standards came in over two years ago now, you do have to wonder how compliant their products were during that time.

Misrepresenting what you are selling can have disastrous consequences, just ask the Volkswagen group about its emissions scandal, or much more seriously the residents of Grenfell, and we are beginning to see window and door companies being taken to court for claiming one thing and supplying another. Pleading ignorance just won’t cut it.

Building inspectors and specifiers alike are increasingly adamant about seeing the evidence that backs up the thermal performance claimed. Those who get caught out can face compensation claims and legal bills that could cripple an otherwise healthy business.

Against these increasingly serious consequences, why take the risk?

Our U-value reports can be viewed on our website here. We don’t have anything to hide, if your systems house isn’t doing the same, ask yourself why.

Complying honestly doesn’t have to be complicated, it sometimes just needs a different way of thinking, or perhaps a different aluminium system supplier.
