Bien quâamputĂ©e de ses 15 premiers kilomĂštres au dĂ©part de Sisteron et de ses derniers hectomĂštres dans le village de Thoard, cette ES reste la spĂ©ciale âcoup de pokerâ par excellence. Avec son rythme modĂ©rĂ© dans la montĂ©e depuis Saint-Geniez, en passant par Authon, mais beaucoup plus accentuĂ© dans la descente exposĂ©e Sud, ce chrono est devenu mythique depuis sa crĂ©ation en 1979, grĂące notamment au col de Fontbelle (1304 m), ouvert uniquement Ă la circulation lâhiver pour le passage du Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo. Souvent enneigĂ© et verglacĂ©, du fait de la non-frĂ©quentation des dameuses ou autres engins de dĂ©neigement ou de salage, âFontbelleâ est le juge de paix de cette spĂ©ciale qui finalement se joue sur quatre de ses dĂ©sormais 20 kilomĂštres. Et avec chaque annĂ©e le mĂȘme casse-tĂȘte : celui du choix des pneumatiques. MalgrĂ© les nombreux scĂ©narii possibles et imaginables au dĂ©part, seul le rĂ©sultat final nous surprend toujours Ă lâarrivĂ©e, câest aussi cela la magie du âMonte-Carloâ ! Even without its first 15 kilometers, at the start from Sisteron, and without its last hectometers in the village of Thoard, this SS remains the «daring bet» stage. With a very high pace in the uphill portion from SaintGeniez and through Authon, but much slower in the downhill part, this stage became a myth as soon as it was introduced in 1979, thanks to Col de Fontbelle (1304m) which is only open to traffic in winter for the one and only Monte-Carlo Rally. It is often covered with snow and ice because grooming machines never clear it or salt it at that time of year, the road being closed for almost three months. The «Fontbelle» pass is definitely a judge of peace on this stage, the toughest portion covering 4 of its now 20km length. And each and every year, teams are confronted to the same riddle: tire choice. There are many possible and potential scenarios, but the final result of that stage is always a surprise.
