MILAN AND THE OLYMPICS

The Milano Cortina 2026 Candidature will contribute to a golden decade of Olympic and Paralympic sport, placing Milano Cortina alongside other leading international cities, to help reposition the Games in modern society. The selection of the venues is fully aligned with the ambition of northern Italy to become a world-class hub of excellence for winter sports. The Games will showcase the quality of the selected sports infrastructure and help to invest in renovating/ upgrading those venues that need investments. The Games will also be conducive to greater cooperation in the entire Alpine macro-region, to improve the attractiveness of the mountains as a place to live and reverse the trend of depopulation. Finally, the Games are a unique opportunity to showcase Italy’s design style that has seen the “Made in Italy” brand become synonymous with excellence all over the world. The International Olympic Committee works closely with local organisers for almost a decade to stage an edition of the Olympic Games. Olympic Agenda 2020 has improved the level of service provided to future host cities while reducing costs. Milano Cortina wants to build on its strong environmental credentials and use the Games to help accelerate sustainability plans. The Master Plan has already been conceived to minimise the environmental impact, thanks to the wide use of existing infrastructures. The Strategic Environmental Assessment for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games will ensure that environmental considerations are taken on board, with a coherent stakeholder engagement programme. The legacy vision is to use the “power of the Games” as a catalyst to deliver our long-term strategic plans, identifying four priority themes: sport, social, economic and environmental topics. A Sustainability and Legacy Permanent Forum will be immediately established to coordinate all the organisations with responsibilities for legacy delivery, through a comprehensive legacy programme, with quantified indicators and clear monitoring and evaluation. Generation 2026 will play sports regularly, recycle three quarters of the waste they produce, use sustainable means of transportation only, use sport to understand cultural diversity, and grow in a more inclusive and integrated society.

PORTO DI MARE

“Porto di Mare” is an area located between the boundary of the consolidated city and the Vettabbia Park, inside the South Agricultural Park, near the Abbey of Chiaravalle and lapped by the Cammino dei Monaci, which connects Milan to the Via Francigena. Its name has remained in memory of a project never realized that involved the construction of a river port as a landing place for the navigable canal MilanCremona-Po, also never concluded to connect Milan to the Adriatic Sea. Now the area has been managed by the Municipality of Milan to the “Italia Nostra” Association for 5 years and the work done by volunteers and experts of the CFU (Urban Forestry Center) is changing its appearance. Paradoxically, its abandonment has made ‘Porto di Mare’ a place of proliferation of biodiversity and now has taken on the appearance of a naturalistic wetland… In short, a possible urban park that still carries within it the signs of its difficult history. Porto di Mare’s abandoned green area has a total surface of 65 hectares and is included in South Milan Agricultural Park. The area borders with Cassinis Park and former night club Roses Park area to the north, with artisanal settlements bounded by San Dionigi street to the southwest, with Sant’Arialdo street to the south-east and with Autostrada del Sole motorway junction to the north-east. The area is almost entirely fenced except for northern side bordering with Cassinis Park and a passage opened in correspondence with the motorway bridge crossing Sant’Arialdo street and adjacent Rogoredo rail park. From Cassinis Park parking area and from Porto di Mare MM3 subway station it is possible to access the area by a path connecting to a footpath internal to Porto di Mare area. The only vehicular access is located in correspondence with the barrier along the central span of fence on the border with Sant’Arialdo street. The degradation and social issues which have been characterizing significantly the area are being gradually worked out through the commitment of the local community, the citizens and the volunteers, the CFU - Centro Forestazione Urbana (Center for Urban Forestation), Italia Nostra and public administration. The area provides nowadays valuable conditions. The long abandonment allowed the development of new natural habitats with presence of an interesting fauna and a well-established flora, characterized by woods on the former dump hill and a meadow of willows and poplars, named “il pratone” (the big lawn) developed around a bigwetland created by the upwelling of groundwater.

THE VISION

Made for Porto di Mare, our proposal includes sustainable performance analysis during the decision-making process of the project, aiming to illustrate with it how new developments can embrace environmentalist principles. The project would transform the site into a model for sustainable way of living and accommodate the future residents for the Winter Olympics 2026 in an entirely timber construction. Our proposal merges traditional Milanese urban and rural typologies to create a hybrid that balances the city and its natural surroundings. For deciding to build in the natural landscape in Porto di Mare comes with a commitment to balance people with nature. Specifically, this means that our new district will incorporate natural habitats that encourage richer growth for plants and animals, “With the rural village as an archetype, we’re creating a city where biodiversity and active recreation define a sustainable pact between people and nature.” Our goal was entirely clear – we know we have a responsibility to take great care of the community’s plant and animal residents, while at the same time building a sustainable neighborhood within this setting. We have a strong focus on developing the Porto di Mare masterplan on natural, local terms.

THE STRATEGY

“Like the traditional rural village, the Porto di Mare masterplan stands for itself within an open natural landscape. This gives an opportunity to create a setting that is uniquely sensitive to sustainability and natural priorities,” As young professionals “We see a potential to build a new city that speaks to the sensibilities of younger generations, to create a home for people seeking a solution on how to live in better harmony with nature. For us, Porto di Mare is a proof of concept that this can indeed be done.” Designing a district of wooden housing is a part of a commitment “to provide climate-conscious development in housing.” Our timber-construction proposal aims to reduce the carbon impact of the development. The buildings are constructed from solid timber in order to radically reduce CO2 emissions, positively affect the indoor climate, and enhance the interior quality of life. Apartments have been positioned for an optimal balance between light and shade, while environmentally conscious features such as rooftop photovoltaic panels, and stormwater collection seek to reduce the scheme’s carbon footprint.
