Take home a taste of the region with delicious delicacies or curious keepsakes.

Fraser Coast Regional Council acknowledges to the east, the Butchulla (Badtjala) and to the west, the Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) People, their connection to Country (land, sea and sky) and recognise the many places of cultural, spiritual, social and economic significance in the community. We pay respects to their Elders – past, present and emerging. We also acknowledge other First Nation Aboriginals and the Torres Strait Islander people, who reside in the Fraser Coast region.

Colin Reaney’s installation at the inaugural Regional Spotlight exhibition reflects a lifetime of exploration—both geographical and artistic. After nearly three decades of teaching art across the globe, his corner installation at Hervey Bay Regional Gallery invites viewers into a compelling conversation about settlement and belonging.

“Making art is all about new beginnings—a daily experience,” Colin explains, drawing on Edward Said’s distinction between fixed origins and dynamic beginnings. This philosophy has guided him through teaching positions from Singapore to the Middle East, where students would curiously ask about his Australian ‘accent’ and challenge him to articulate what art could mean in their cultural spaces.

Colin’s current practice centres on large sheets of paper, 2B graphite pencils, plaster, paint, and wood. His installation at Regional Spotlight, titled who own the numbers who make the words, explores the experience of settlement—movement, arrivals and

departures that he describes as universal experiences, “sometimes good experiences, sometimes worrying and stressful events.”

For Regional Spotlight, visitors can encounter Colin’s corner installation that combines drawing, sculptural elements, and text to explore themes of settlement and belonging.

The work examines settlement from early Australia to current times, asking how movement and change affect our sense of being in this country, in this life. Drawing on critic Lucy Lippard’s words, Colin reflects: “art is about what the artist is doing with his/her art making... it’s all part of the life of ART makers.”

It’s a philosophy that reveals itself in Colin’s installation—where decades of global teaching experience, cultural exchange, and personal reflection converge into a singular artistic statement about what it means to belong.
