Hervey Bay also serves as the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef—the beginning of the world's largest coral reef system and a hub for marine life—and Lady Elliot Island, a sanctuary for giant manta rays and turtles and home to over 1,200 species of aquatic life.

The region boasts the Great Sandy Biosphere Reserve, renowned for its cultural and ecological significance. It includes the Ramsar-listed wetland and the famous UNESCO World Heritage-listed K'gari (Fraser Island), the world's largest sand island and coastal sand mass. With its spectacular lakes, waterways and beaches, towering ancient rainforests, and unique wildlife, this natural wonderland should not be missed.
