Tiaro and Surrounds

EVENTS

Discover the hidden rural charms of the Fraser Coast with a visit to Tiaro and surrounds, situated on the Bruce Highway, 30km south of Maryborough. The first European settlement of what later became the Tiaro district was in 1842 when Captain William Kynaston Joliffe set up the “Noomoo Woolloo” sheep run for wealthy squatterpastoralist John Eales but the venture failed within a year. Tiaro township began life in 1867 as an overnight stopping point for coaches transporting gold from the Gympie goldfields to the Port of Maryborough. The name Tiaro is of Aboriginal origin and means “dead tree”. Begin your visit at the Tiaro Visitor Information Centre and Craft Cottage in the restored railway station on the Bruce Highway. Friendly volunteers can help with information, maps and tour routes, while you stock up on homemade jams, pickles, cakes and local art and craft.

Follow the tourist drive from the Bruce Highway to Bauple and Bauple Mountain where the famous Bopple or Macadamia nut, as it is known around the world, was first discovered. Explore the history of the area at the Bauple Museum. Operated by the Mt Bauple and District Historical Society, the museum is set within extensive gardens with picnic tables and free barbecues. Be absorbed by old photographs of the region, family histories, war records, a rare coin collection and antiques and collectables. Three examples of original ungrafted Macadamia nut trees are located across from the museum. For opening hours visit www.bauplemuseum.com.

Located 7km off the Bruce Highway, Gundiah is from the Aboriginal word for goodbye. It is home to the Prince Alfred Hotel, built in 1896, while the Gundiah Community Place is the centre of community activities. From Gundiah you can return to the Bruce Highway or continue to Munna Creek, on the BaupleWoolooga Road.

Accessed via Glenwood, Bauple or Tiaro, the roads are largely unsealed and unsigned so navigation can be challenging for non-locals. Sealed roads can be accessed via Granville’s Boonooroo Road and Maryborough Cooloola Road.

Glenwood The Glenwood Community Hall and Glenwood Park is about 1km off the Bruce Highway from the Arborten Road turnoff in Pepper Road. The shady areas attract a variety of wildlife into the park including kangaroos and goannas. There is a barbecue area, shelter, playground and sports oval at the Park. The Glenwood Lions Botanical Gardens in Varley Road is also a refreshing picnic spot. A service station and a general store are adjacent to the Bruce Highway in Arborten Road.

Great Sandy Strait The coastal communities of Tinnanbar, Maaroom, Boonooroo, Tuan and Poona are at the heart of the Great Sandy Biosphere, which was designated by UNESCO in 2009 and encompasses 874,000ha of land plus 542,000ha of marine park. The seaside villages can be accessed via the Maryborough Cooloola Road. Boasting soft white sand, sparkling turquoise water and scenic views across to Fraser Island, the sheltered waters of the Strait are home to dugongs, turtles and rare Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins. Kauri Creek is a favourite with fishermen and nature lovers and the estuary supports coastal wetlands of seagrass, mangroves and salt marsh.
