Soak up history against a backdrop of glorious colonial architecture and riverside parklands as you explore Maryborough’s original port district. PORTSIDE HERITAGE PRECINCT Portside offers a range of experiences including cafés and pubs, museums and historical collections, inspiring art and culture at Gatakers Artspace, and beautiful Queens Park - one of Australia’s first botanic gardens. • Listen to experienced guides tell colourful tales of early colonial life • Sample regional port among the rum barrels left over from the 1860s • See the world’s largest collection of medals awarded for gallantry at Gallipoli as well as Victoria Cross and Cross of Valour medals • See exhibits and interactive displays • Watch the sound and light show of the arrival of the first boatload of immigrants in 1862 • Be there for the firing of the historic time cannon at 11am each Thursday

This beautiful two-storey Federation-style residence was constructed for the SubCollector and his family. Enjoy a meal overlooking the river.

Store (c.1864) e Bond Walk the earthen floors of this former store of her Majesty’s Customs Service and discover a time when opium was a legal import and the rum trade flourished. Sample regional port and liqueurs.

r Maryborough Military & Colonial Museum

Regarded as one of the most significant military museums outside the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, you can browse through 10,000+ items of military and colonial memorabilia, including an extensive library of books, documents, maps, medals, uniforms, furniture, vehicles and artwork. The ever-changing displays provide insight into the patriotic valour and pioneering spirit of our forebears.

Upstairs, anyone interested in genealogy and heritage can access vital research resources through the extensive library of records and historical books, articles, photographs, CD ROM microfiche and publications.

Maryborough Wide Bay Burnett Historical Society Situated in the School of Arts, one of Maryborough’s most beautiful heritage buildings, explore a snapshot of early history through a wonderful collection of more than 3500 photographs, historical records, more than 3000 books, weddings gowns from 1890-1910, needlework and lace artefacts.

u Maryborough Whistle Stop Museum

Maryborough’s impressive rail heritage is on show on the site of the heritagelisted railway station (c. 1882) with a small but remarkable collection of railway memorabilia. Dedicated volunteers also crew the Mary Ann, a working replica of Queensland’s first steam engine built in Maryborough in 1873. Ride her through Queens Park every Thursday and last Sunday of the month.

o Croydon Foundry Museum

This museum provides valuable insight into one of Maryborough’s major industries of the last century. Established by English immigrant William Stevenson in 1908, the foundry produced the popular Croydon stoves and boiler stands along with agricultural, mining and timber milling machinery and equipment for Queensland’s sugar mills.

a Maryborough Hospital Museum

Housed in a 1927 former doctor’s residence, and displaying items and documents which relate to the city’s early public general and maternity hospitals dating from the 1850s. Learn about the pneumonic plague outbreak of 1905, which killed eight people including two heroic nurses.

s Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum

A multi-award-winning tourism complex with 21 buildings spread across three grassy acres, including a faithfully furnished slab hut from 1898, fully equipped blacksmith shop, old church, complete railway station and dairy shed. Blacksmith, corn shelling, woodturning and rope-making demonstrations are held every Sunday from 1-3pm or other times by appointment for large groups.

There’s not far to search before you encounter the past all over the beautiful and historically rich Fraser Coast. virtual time warp where curry powder from the 1800s is still on the shelves as are advertising signs from throughout the 20th century. As a museum, it preserves and chronicles 100 years of merchandising history.

Burrum District Museum Explore Howard’s past as a major coal mining centre from 1863, when the first coal seam was discovered on the banks of the Burrum River until the closure of the last coalmine (Burgowan Number 12) in 1997. Enjoy displays of farming and war memorabilia, and cottage crafts.

A 45-minute drive from Maryborough through beautiful countryside brings you to a fascinating compilation of rural memorabilia and antiques. Glimpse into the pioneering past as the museum brings a traditional 1800s Australian country village to life.

g Mt Bauple & District Historical Society

Reflecting the early history of Bauple and surrounding districts, and set within extensive gardens with sheltered picnic tables and free barbecues, the museum presents a treasure trove of memorabilia including old photographs, family histories, war records, a 100-yearold organ and an extensive display of telephones, antiques and collectables dating back more than a century.
