Welcome It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Mary Poppins Festival, one of Queensland’s many great event experiences here on the Fraser Coast. Events like the Mary Poppins Festival are vital to Queensland’s tourism prosperity, engaging visitors with the locals and the community, and creating memorable experiences. The Palaszczuk Government is proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program, which helps drive visitors to the destination, increase expenditure, support jobs and foster community pride. There is a story to tell in every Queensland event and I hope these stories help inspire you to experience more of what this great State has to offer. Congratulations to the event organisers and all those involved in delivering the Mary Poppins Festival and I encourage you to take some time to explore the diverse visitor experiences on the Fraser Coast. The Hon Kate Jones MP Minister for Tourism and Major Events

THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY of the Mary Poppins Festival program is a celebration of the art of storytelling. Maryborough people have many great stories to share and some unexpected claims of “first” and“oldest” on the national and world stage. It is these stories and their quirky characters that retell the essence of our community’s culture and inspire us to dream and create new chapters of our history through art and performance. The Mary Poppins Festival is a perfect example of community achievement – people giving back to their city. The Proud Marys Association, a small band of inspired and dedicated volunteers, set out over a decade ago determined to raise the profile of Maryborough as the birthplace of Mary Poppins’ creator, P.L. Travers. Together, with the support of the community, they raised funds to erect the city’s Mary Poppins statue and initiated the Mary Morning Tea, which became the catalyst and the heart of the amazing festival we enjoy today. In the words of Mary Poppins: “Anything can happen if you let it”, and Maryborough today continues to build upon this inspiration with the restoration of P.L. Travers’ birthplace – a building that will become a special, new attraction for the city that will firmly secure our link to the world’s most beloved nanny. Be sure to attend Mary Poppins 2017 and follow this wonderful story as we create an engaging and delightful experience for visitors and locals alike. “No culture can satisfactorily move along its forward course without its myths, which are its teachings, its fundamental dealing with the truth of things, and the one reality that underlies everything.” PL Travers

T

HE POWER OF STORY TELLING

We all remember things we learnt from our Grandma or Grandpa, our Fathers and Mothers – things that stand us in good stead throughout our life. At the heart of every good story is a life lesson, passed down through the ages that continues to resonate regardless of our age. It is for this reason that the work of PL Travers is enshrined within our literary history – each story is full of life lessons and insights shared in a way that children and adults can absorb. PL Travers had a love of mysticism and philosophy that shaped her life as well as the very character of Mary Poppins. She wove charming, fanciful, magical tales that take the reader to a realm of myth and poetry. Just as Mary Poppins teaches the Banks children, each tale, provides the reader with an indirect life teaching by hint and suggestion.

“ Neither Sleeping Beauty nor Rumpelstilzkin was really written for children. In fact, none of the fundamental fairy stories was ever written at all. They all rose spontaneously from the folk and were transmitted orally from generation to generation to unlettered listeners of all ages.” PL Travers

“ Mary Poppins is the story of my life.” PL Travers 1899 – 1996

The world’s most beloved nanny, Mary Poppins, is the famous fictional creation of Pamela Lyndon Travers who began life in Maryborough on 9 August, 1899 as Helen Lyndon Goff. She was the first daughter of bank manager Travers Goff and wife Margaret and was born in the manager’s residence, located on the second storey of the bank building on the corner of Kent and Richmond Streets.

Mem’s latest book: I’m Australian Too, takes her back to where she started: her passion for Australia. Sunday 2 July

The Last Word @ Sunday Riverside SUN 2 JUL 3PM–6PM. BROLGA THEATRE Come and enjoy something a little bit different at Sunday Riverside. The Stuff & Nonsense Troupe will be encouraging you to be part of the fun at the Open Mic sessions. So if you have ever wanted to have sing or tell a Maryborough story, or juggle and clown just put your name on the board near the Stage. You will need to bring your guitar or a backing CD and anything else you might need for your performance. The Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Troupe will be happy to help out too! Also on the bill for the afternoon are some of the Fraser Coast’s best singers and songwriters to entertain you. It makes for an afternoon of fun where you can have a go up on stage too! As Mae West said, ‘ an ounce of performance is worth pounds of promises’ So if you have promised yourself that one day you will get up on stage, the Mary Poppins Festival has provided you with the date!
