Exploring Mt Walsh Mount Walsh day-use area
Waterfall Creek Section
Have a picnic or barbecue below The Bluff Mount, a spectacular granite bluff— at the park’s northern end. Sheltered picnic tables, gas barbecues and non-potable water are provided. The local council provides toilet and shower facilities beside the day-use area. Experienced bushwalkers can hike to the summit from here.
Sometimes referred to as the Utopia Section, this beautiful part of the park is an excellent place to visit. The drive includes approximately 8km of dirt road which is accessible with conventional vehicles in dry conditions. From the Waterfall Creek car park explore the area on the Rock Pool walk.
Coongarra Rock Section
Talk to the Ranger before rock climbing or abseiling in remote parts of the park.
If you have a four-wheel-drive Coongarra Rock is a spectacular place to visit, featuring the stunning granite monolith of the rock itself surrounded by hoop pine vine forest and eucalypt forests.
Walking Most of this rugged park is suitable only for experienced, well-equipped bushwalkers with sound skills. The park has limited developed walking tracks.

Take a selfie with Mr T, the Mary River turtle bronze statue. Read about the 20-year search to find the strange creature that breathes through its tail and learn about the river’s two other rare inhabitants: the ancient lungfish and the voracious Mary River cod.

COUNTRY HOSPITALITY • Drop into Theebine Hotel at the old railway siding for a meal and browse the eclectic collection of juke boxes and vintage furniture • The train doesn’t stop at Gundiah anymore but some evenings more than 100 people can be found at the old Prince Alfred Hotel, built in 1868. Seafood nights and BBQ afternoons with pig races make it a vibrant bush venue
WHAT A CATCH! BAUPLE • Be shown unusual artefacts and hear colourful stories from volunteers at Bauple’s Historical Museum and Village set amid recreational amenities in Federation Park • Taste the famous wild nuts traded for centuries by the Kabi people and rediscovered in the mid-19th century by explorers. Known as Queensland nuts and later the macadamia, they are still called Bauple nuts here. You can buy gourmet nut products at many of the quirky local stores
• Fish the fresh water species upstream of the Mary River barrage. Petrie Park at Tiaro has a boat ramp, free camping and amenities
DICKABRAM BRIDGE AT MIVA Built in 1886, this heritage-listed structure is one of only two combined road and rail bridges in Australia. Interpretative signage explains the history of the bridge which stands 23m above the Mary River. A park beside the bridge is a peaceful picnic spot to enjoy a commanding view over the river, with toilet and BBQ facilities nearby.
