FROM THE PRESIDENT My fellow Chartwell members it’s time to mark your calendars for our Annual Chartwell General Meeting. On behalf of the Board of Directors I invite you to join us Wednesday October 28, 2015 at 7:00pm in the ballroom. The Board will review the accomplishments of each committee, discuss our financial status and present our preliminary plan for future growth and changes. In addition, we will be voting on several By Law changes. It is imperative you attend as we need a quorum to pass any proposed changes. You will receive the proposed By Law changes in the mail, for your review, prior to the meeting. The Board and their committees have worked very hard on your behalf, and have had a very productive year. We have heard your praise, concerns and desires. Michael Fay is working diligently to have the new Clubhouse sound system installed in October and ready for the General Meeting. He is also working on the purchase of new ballroom chairs. This winter we will be renovating the clubhouse main foyer bathrooms. We hope these small, but noticeable changes encourage you to bring personal, business, and outside club events to Chartwell. Over the next few years you will see continual updating to the Club. The Board will strive to work hard to help Chartwell grow stronger and provide enjoyment for all. Please join me for Cabernet Night on Friday, November 6 for my final event as President of Chartwell. See you at the club! – Shauna

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE As the weather changes from the hot days of summer to the cooler months of fall, so do our thoughts of all we love about the coming changes. We enjoy the fall foliage and eventually migrate to the outdoor patios and fire pits, the comfort foods, our favorite hoppy beers, cabernets’ wines, and whiskeys or bourbons. You can enjoy all of these at home or at the second home we all call Chartwell.

“CHARTWELL PROVIDES A WARM COZY ATMOSPHERE FOR THE MANY EVENTS OF THE SEASON BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE. WHAT A WONDERFUL TIME TO HAVE A DINNER WITH FRIENDS OR RELATIVES DURING THE HOLIDAYS WHICH WILL BE HERE BEFORE WE KNOW IT.”

Chartwell provides a warm cozy atmosphere for the many events of the season both inside and outside. What a wonderful time to have a dinner with friends or relatives during the holidays which will be here before we know it. The House and Social committee in conjunction with management and staff, have many events planned for your enjoyment in and around the club, from the Fall Wine, Nine and Dine, to Grill Nights, Parental Freedom Nights and Family Night. Our Family First focus allows us to be mindful of all age groups throughout our membership and plan events that speak to each of us. Our Junior members' needs are also heard loud and clear. Chartwell is ready to accommodate events to your liking. If you have a group and want to plan something just reach out to a committee member or our staff and let’s plan something spectacular. As you know when an event is planned we advertise it to the membership through email blast, the Chatter and social media. So follow and like, as they say, pass along to all that are going to attend and help Chartwell perpetuate the success of the event. And most importantly make a reservation. The more reservations we have the better our staff can plan to provide the service you enjoy! For example, over the summer several groups notified the clubhouse that they were coming up to the pool for a Friday evening happy hour and requested a bar set up. Our staff quickly jumped into action and those at the pool had a great time. Joe Flynn and I also guest bartended this summer at the pool. What a fun time of margaritas and Grapefruit Crush’s among other summer drinks. We will be having our usual guest bartending in the clubhouse this fall and winter as well. So, we are always looking for a few people to bartend and show us your mixology skills! This time of year much planning goes into our calendar, so let’s plan on attending the events at Chartwell. After all, spending our holidays with friends and loved ones, enjoying our health and happiness, along with giving back to those less fortunate than us is what truly makes life the most rewarding. As with any event or anytime at the club, be respectful to others and adhere to the dress code. The few rules we have are in place so we can all carry forward the traditions and values of Chartwell. Speaking of Chartwell Values, I want to remind all the Chartwell Foundation will be celebrating its 10 years Anniversary in January of 2016. The Chartwell Foundation has provided roughly $500,000.00 to charities over this time and that is a direct result of the time and energy commitment of the the committee, its founding members, and you the Chartwell membership. What a great Country Club and Foundation to be associated with, so as the seasons change, let’s embrace something constant, that being, all that Chartwell offers to its members and community. See you at the Club! – Shaun Mahoney

The Chartwell Foundation recently seized the opportunity to support our local schools with a contribution to a program designed to assist those less fortunate in our community. Now in its 25th year, the “Backto-School” Program is jointly sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Public Schools and the Department of Social Services. We requested that the County earmark our $2,500 donation to the Severna Park area Middle Schools for the purchase of student supplies. We have also asked the County how the Foundation, the Club, and its members might become more involved in this effort in the future. The Foundation’s next fundraiser – the Gwyn Horrigan Memorial Golf Tournament – is scheduled for Sunday, October 18th. The $130 per player registration includes your round of golf, cart, heavy hors d’oeuvres, prizes, and a tax deductible ($50) donation to the Foundation. Bill Chalmer’s Quarterfield Grill is once again providing a complimentary lunch for each participant at Noon. Golf will begin with a “shotgun” start at 1:00 PM. We hope that you will consider joining us in this fun event. Sponsorships are also available. Please contact the Pro Shop for a registration form. Thank you for your continued support of the Chartwell Foundation and its mission of providing assistance to local charities.

ANCHORING THE CLUB—UNDERSTANDING RULE 14-1b The USGA and The R&A, golf’s governing bodies, have adopted changes to Rule 14-1 of the Rules of Golf that prohibit anchoring the club in making a stroke. The new Rule will go into effect on January 1, 2016, in accordance with the regular four-year cycle for changes to the Rules of Golf. WHAT CHANGES? The new entry —Rule 14-1b— prohibits strokes made with the club or a hand gripping the club held directly against the player’s body or with a forearm held against the body to establish an anchor point that indirectly anchors the club.

WHAT THE RULE SAYS In making a stroke, the player must not anchor the club, either “directly” or by use of an “anchor point.”

NOTE 1: The club is anchored “directly” when the player intentionally holds the club or a gripping hand in contact with any part of his body, except that the player may hold the club or a gripping hand against a hand or forearm.

NOTE 2: An “anchor point” exists when the player intentionally holds a forearm in contact with any part of his body to establish a gripping hand as a stable point around which the other hand may swing the club.

THIS IS NOT AN EQUIPMENT RULE — Conforming mid-length and long putters remain permissible provided they are not anchored. PERMITTED

PROHIBITED

MID-LENGTH PUTTER ANCHORED AGAINST STOMACH

ANCHORED LONG PUTTER

ANCHOR POINT CREATED BY FOREARM

Penalty Anchoring the club in making a stroke brings a two-stroke penalty in stroke play and loss of hole in match play (as with any other breach of Rule 14-1).

CHEF MAGGITTI'S CORNER Hopefully everyone enjoyed their summer this year. We have been very busy here at the club the last several months. We will introduce a New Lunch and Dinner menu starting in October that will run through the first of the year: Focused on comfort foods, stews, fall root vegetables and some additional vegetarian selections.

CHEF'S TIP OF THE MONTH We are in the season for soups and stews and every now and then we make a mistake and over season our stew or soup with salt. Do not worry no need to throw it away. Just take some potatoes and ¼ them; add to the stew or soup; as the potatoes cook it will absorb the salt. Remove the potatoes before they fall apart; you may need to do this a couple of time. Make sure to taste your stew after you remove the potatoes.

Sweet Pickles YIELD: 1 gallon 4 cucumbers 1 qt. cider vinegar 3 tbsp. salt 1 tsp. mustard seed 1 onion, sliced

3 cups white wine vinegar 6 cups sugar 1 tbsp. allspice, whole 2¼ tsp. celery seed 2 tsp. turmeric

2. Combine cider vinegar, salt, mustard seed, onion and cucumbers and simmer for 10 minutes. 3. Drain and discard liquid. 4. Heat white wine vinegar with remaining ingredients and boil until sugar dissolves. 5. Pour over pickles and onion slices. 6. Let sit and cool. Enjoy!!!

TENNIS TIP Strings and string tension is an extremely important element in having your game and racquet suit your style of play. Today there are so many options to choose from in having your racquet strung. Essentially the three most common strings to put in your racquet are: Synthetic gut, Gut and Poly. All three of these strings play very different from each other. So, it is very important to not only choose the right type of string but to have your racquet strung at the correct tension for your game and for how often you play. Poly strings are now the rage on the professional tour, but these strings are extremely stiff and could cause you to develop arm problems. Poly string do allow the individual to swing fast with a lot of control. Synthetic gut would be a better choice if you do not have a fast swing or and elbow problem. A multifilament string is the best synthetic gut to play with. Gut of course is probably the nicest feel of all the strings but the durability, cost and how long the playability of this string make it a hard choice to choose. I also recommend that you should string your racquet not by how many times you play a week but rather by the weather conditions. Summer months you can string your racquet tighter while in the winter you should lower your tension two or three pounds.

B O A R D C A N D I D AT E S ANDREW "DREW" BAUER Andrew "Drew" Bauer joined Chartwell Country Club in 2010 and has served on the House Committee for two years. He lives in Linstead on the Severn with his wife, Amy; his son, Tref; and two Labradors, Nelli and Chapstick. Drew is a Senior Construction Manager for Beatty Development Group where he currently oversees the design and construction of the Exelon Headquarters and Point Street Apartments at Harbor Point in Baltimore City. Prior to joining Chartwell, Drew was a member of Sparrows Point Country Club for five years. He has served on boards for Severn School, Federal Hill South, and the Linstead Community Association. Drew and his wife grew up in the Severna Park area and are Severn School alumni. In addition to golfing, Drew enjoys boating, traveling, coaching his son’s sports teams, and spending time with family.

EJNER JOHNSON For the past 29 years, I have thoroughly embraced all that Chartwell Golf and Country Club has to offer. While golf was initially the driving reason for joining, my wife, Nancy and our four children have been actively involved in tennis, swim team, social activities, etc. with the ultimate benefit of forming cherished, lifelong friendships. I truly believe in all of the amenities that Chartwell offers and as a Board member, I will work to ensure that our membership continues to enjoy the benefits for years to come. As a Managing Director at UBS Financial Securities in Baltimore, I dedicate my time to managing both personal and institutional wealth. Additionally, I have served on the Finance Committee at Chartwell for the past 7 years. Finally, my 20+ years as Finance Chair at Our Lady of the Fields Church in Millersville have given me ample exposure to the challenges of managing a budget within a volatile financial environment. I look forward to serving the members of Chartwell over the next three years.

MARCI FLYNN My husband, Joe Flynn, and I, along with our two daughters, Kaitlyn (8) and Hunter (4), joined Chartwell in 2011. We chose to move to Severna Park from Baltimore City in 2009 because of the great schools and amazing community. Since we both have played golf for a long time, joining Chartwell Golf & Country Club was always our hope! Joe and I have been actively involved in Chartwell since we joined. I have served on the House Committee, been on the Board Nominating Committee, and recently, a small group working on the interior of the club. I play golf in the Women’s Tuesday Night outings and the Couples events, as time allows. Joe is an avid golfer whom plays in most of the Men’s golf tournaments (2015 Member-Guest Champion!), is a member of the Wine Guys, served on the Golf Tournament Committee, and also is a member of the House Committee. Our children play golf, tennis, and have been on Chartwell’s swim team every summer since we joined. Professionally, I am a Principal at Piper Jaffray, a financial services firm based in Minneapolis, MN, working with institutional clients. I have been in financial services for 19 years and have lived in Los Angeles, CA and Dallas, TX, before moving to Maryland in 2001. I graduated from Pepperdine University with a BS in Business Administration.

13 October/November 2015

We are a young family whom plan to be a part of the Chartwell family for years to come! I look forward to the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors of Chartwell Membership.

THE CHARTWELL FOUNDATION, Inc. The Chartwell Foundation was founded in 2006, it is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501© (3) non-profit organization and contributions to the Foundation are tax deductible. The Foundation conducts business through an eight member Board of Directors Chaired by Wiley Mitchell. The Foundation website is chartwellfoundation.org. Its mission is “to positively impact the community through fund raising efforts and by awarding grants to local non-profit

organizations for charitable and educational purposes.” Over the years more than $500,000 in grants have been awarded by the Foundation; the majority of which were to non-profits right here in the local community. In 2014 alone grants totaling $60,000 were made to various local organizations. Examples of organizations that have received grants include the Severna Park Assistance Network, Partners in Care, The Providence Center, Hospice of the Chesapeake, The Severna Park Community Center and the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company. The foundation also maintains a scholarship fund at Anne Arundel Community College. Each year a graduate of a local high school receives a tuition grant from the fund. The award is based on a combination of academic achievement and financial need. The decision is made independently by the college. The foundation is not involved. Donations to the Foundation come primarily from club members, either through golf tournaments or through the simple act of writing a check. There is no question the Chartwell Foundation, and therefore the members of the Chartwell Golf and Country Club together have had a positive impact on the lives of countless individuals and families here in the community.
