FROM THE PRESIDENT What a great time to be a member of Chartwell. I can tell you that I am looking forward to serving as your President during this exciting time and that positivity will be the message for the coming year. In the words of Charles Swindoll’s poem “Attitude” – “ I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you...we are in charge of our attitudes.” Chartwell, half full or half empty? That is totally up to each of you. Will Chartwell offer the perfect experience every single time to every single member? That is almost impossible, but will that stop the Board, general manager, food and beverage staff, golf, tennis, greens maintenance staff from working to provide that perfect experience? Absolutely not! I took a peek at the JD Power Customer Service Satisfaction Survey and found this interesting. The category leaders in automotive, travel and financial services routinely scored a 3-4 out of five. Please keep in mind, these are the category leaders. Here at the Club, we are not satisfied with a 3 or 4. Striving for a 5 is our goal. For us to push our “Customer Satisfaction” score closer to 5, it is incumbent upon not only the staff, that are essential in the day to day operation of Chartwell, but also for each and every member, to improve the experience that we all will share. To borrow from Charles Swindoll, that does involve attitude. Note the large number of new members around The Club. Our membership is evolving and the infusion of spirit and energy is welcome. To the new members, jump in and get involved! The value to you and your family is enhanced the more you participate in the programs offered through golf, swimming, tennis and the dining and social experience. To our base of “seasoned” members that have built and supported The Club through both good times and hard times, continue to enjoy what we have built. Chartwell offers a marvelous experience that we are truly fortunate to be a part of. Stay engaged, and continue to enjoy and expand the friendships that make Chartwell such a family centered club.
“CHARTWELL OFFERS A MARVELOUS EXPERIENCE THAT WE ARE TRULY FORTUNATE TO BE A PART OF. STAY ENGAGED, AND CONTINUE TO ENJOY AND EXPAND THE FRIENDSHIPS THAT MAKE CHARTWELL SUCH A FAMILY CENTERED CLUB. ”
There are a number of exciting social opportunities coming this winter and spring. The not to be missed First Friday events are a highlight along with childrens’ events and President’s Ball. Keep an eye out for these and other events via the emails and Chatter. See you at the Club! – Shauna Talbot

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE
“WHEN FACED WITH ADVERSITY, WE WORKED TOGETHER, ADDRESSED THE CONCERNS AND FOUND A SOLUTION MOST EQUITABLE TO ALL.”
Well the New Year is here...2015. I cannot believe 2014 is over already. As they say, “The days are long and the years are short”. With the start of the New Year, we reflect back on the previous year and remember our challenges along with our accomplishments. When faced with adversity, we worked together, addressed the concerns and found a solution most equitable to all. With that said, we had many accomplishments and improvements at Chartwell in 2014 and we are proud of a job well done. Moving forward into 2015 we will continue to face some challenges and with the renewed spirit of the year, Chartwell will continue to step up and face these head on. I want to thank all my fellow Board members and their committees for their efforts last year and the work they will embark upon this year. Like the changing of the guard we have 3 new Board members and I know they are excited to get to work as well. As your Board of Directors, we need the continued help of the membership to participate in the committees and speak for the members at large. You elected us and we are here to deliver on your needs within the best interest of Chartwell. If you have not been involved in a committee, I encourage you to reach out and get involved. Just ask a committee or Board member. We welcome suggestions and a fresh approach. This year the Board will be re-aligning some committees in an effort to be more efficient regarding our service, scheduling of social events, Food and Beverage operations in conjunction with management. So for 2015 the House Committee and Social Committee will be combined. In years past the House and Social worked as one, and we are excited for the new team atmosphere. The Board is also putting together some leadership opportunities for our adolescent members. You will see these in the coming months. I firmly believe 2015 will be a banner year for Chartwell. After our short recess in January I am excited to get back to working with management, staff and enjoying all that Chartwell has to offer. Chef Andrew will amaze us with unique culinary creations, great quality and pairings. Focusing on our family first concept while continually being mindful of what is trendy in country clubs will allow us to evolve and deliver an experience we can all enjoy and value. This is the renewed spirit of Chartwell!
See you at the Club! – Shaun Mahoney 3 February/March 2015

CLUB FINANCIAL OVERVIEW Chartwell, like the rest of the golf industry, has experienced financial challenges during the past few years. In the next five issues of the Chatter, we will provide an overview of the club’s financial position. In addition to looking at the results for 2014, we’ll compare the 2014 results to the results of 2004. We’ll address five key financial drivers in the next five issues: 1. THE REVENUE FROM INITIATION FEES AND MONTHLY PAYMENTS FOR DUES, THE CAPITAL FUND, AND THE SERVICE FEE. We will also provide information on the number of members and monthly payments over time. This source of revenue is the financial heart of the Club.
“WE’LL TRY TO KEEP THE ARTICLES SHORT AND TO THE POINT, BUT AT THE SAME TIME ADDRESS THE KEY ISSUES. THE ARTICLES WILL ADDRESS EVERY ASPECT OF THE CLUB AND MAKE AN EFFORT TO PULL TOGETHER THESE FACTS INTO A STRATEGY THAT ALL OF THE MEMBERSHIP CAN UNDERSTAND AND SUPPORT.”
2. THE GOLF OPERATION. How much does it cost to maintain the golf course and operate the pro shop? Golf is the reason the club exists and the club could not survive without it. Maintaining the golf course is by far the largest expense of the club. We’ll provide information on both the usage of the golf course and the costs of the golf operation. As is true of every private club, the revenue from the golf course is less than the costs of its operation— therefore, a large portion of dues revenue must be used to make up that shortfall. 3. OTHER CLUB OPERATIONS. The bulk of the remaining operations of the club are the clubhouse restaurant facilities, the tennis courts, and the swimming pool. As with the golf course, we’ll look at both usage and cost information. Like the golf operation, the remaining operations of the club do not generate sufficient revenue to fund themselves and must depend upon the monthly payments of the members to balance the books. 4. CAPITAL ISSUES. Where did our debt come from? What are our plans for paying the debt down to a manageable level? What capital projects have been identified in the strategic plan? 5. THE FUTURE. In light of the facts relating to revenue, operating costs, our debt level, and investment plans, what does the future of the club look like? This article will explain the strategy of the club to meet the needs of its members into the future. We’ll try to keep the articles short and to the point, but at the same time address the key issues. The articles will address every aspect of the club and make an effort to pull together these facts into a strategy that all of the membership can understand and support. The articles will leave many unanswered questions— but we’ll identify the members of the club’s committees and we hope that each member will reach out to the appropriate committee with any unanswered questions or suggestions. There are eight committees, each headed by a Board member. In addition, each committee has five to ten members. We’ll recognize the members of those committees so that every member will know who to contact to discuss their questions and suggestions.
5 February/March 2015
As is true of every organization, governing Chartwell requires the Board to make choices and manage tradeoffs. By the end of this series of articles, we hope that you will agree that Chartwell is efficiently managed and that the Club has done a good job of delivering a high level of service at a fair price. Any feedback received from the membership on these articles will be addressed in the next issue of the Chatter. The Board looks forward to hearing from you.
The concept of a charitable entity had been discussed off and on for many years prior to its establishment. Numerous club members embraced the idea of creating a vehicle to give back to the community. The Chartwell Foundation became a reality in 2006. The Foundation is a separate corporate entity, governed by a board made up of Chartwell Golf and Country Club members. It is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Therefore, contributions are tax deductible. Its mission is “to positively impact the community through fund raising efforts and by awarding grants to local non-profit organizations for charitable and educational purposes. Over the years nearly $500,000 in grants have been awarded by the Foundation; the majority of which were to non-profits right here in the local community. In 2014, grants totaling $60,000 were made to local charities. Examples of organizations that have received grants include the Severna Park Assistance Network, Partners in Care, The Providence Center, Hospice of the Chesapeake, The Severna Park Community Center and the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company. The foundation also maintains a scholarship fund at Anne Arundel Community College. Each year a graduate of a local high school receives a tuition grant from the fund. The award is based on a combination of academic achievement and financial need. The decision is made independently by the college. Donations to the Foundation come primarily from club members, either through golf tournaments or through the simple act of writing a check. There is no question the Chartwell Foundation, and therefore the members of the Chartwell Golf and Country Club together have had a positive impact on the lives of countless individuals and families here in the community.

GOLF On behalf of the professional staff we hope you all had a great holiday season! We are happy to announce that we are only a little over a month away from the start of our 2015 golf season. With that being said, I would like to announce this year’s Golf Committee Members: Chad King – Golf Chairman, John Dixon – Tournament Chair, Nancy Lashley – 18 Hole Ladies Chair, Heather Mohr – 9 Hole Ladies Chair, Rick Hunsicker – Senior Golf Chair, and Mark Shwetz – Handicap Chairman. We are all very excited about the upcoming season and looking forward to serving Chartwell. Through collaboration with the golf committee chairs listed above, the professional staff is excited to announce some new ideas that we feel will create some buzz and interest this season. You will see a wide variety of fun-filled social activities, new merchandise lines in your golf shop, player development and tournament programs. We feel these new additions will enhance your overall experience as a member here at Chartwell. As in past seasons, expect to see similar player development programs for women and junior golfers of all ages and skills levels. Our popular Spring Ladies Clinic’s will start up in April and will be open to golfers of all levels, assisting you with some of the basic practices and key swing tips. These clinics will be offered during the morning and evening hours on weekdays. In addition, an On-Course Rules and Etiquette clinic will be available the evening of April 21st. Our Junior Golfers have another exciting season to look forward to, as we continue to bring them the latest in teaching aids and education. Summer golf clinics will begin mid-June and run through the end of July. PGA Junior League Golf makes a return for its second season after a successful undefeated regular season. All of this information will be advertised in the coming months as we make a break for milder weather.

Be on the lookout for a few new changes and additions to the Men’s Tournament Program. This season we will be introducing a Club Medal Play Championship in late May, as well as an Individual Stroke Play and Better Ball of Partners Weekend Sweeps Game. This should inspire some friendly competition on a more regular basis. Our Mother Son/Daughter event has been moved on the calendar to their respectful celebration weekend to help increase participation and enhance the member experience. We anticipate that these changes be well received by our membership as we continue our efforts to add value to your Golf Membership. A new twist to our social events is in the works. Expect to see new formats and themes to our Friday Night Couples Scotches. Each event will have its own theme to go along with light hors d’oeuvres, and adult beverages on the course during play. These events will be for fun and focus more on socializing with your close friends. Lastly, I’m very excited to announce the visit of a special guest to Chartwell this July. Peter Johncke “The Trick Shot Master” will be presenting his amazing show to all on Saturday, July 11th at 5pm. Peter Johncke was born in Stockholm, Sweden. Peter performed his first show in 1994 in Sweden and over the last 18 years he has traveled all over the world displaying his talents in 26 countries. Peter has been featured in many publications worldwide such as Golf Digest, Bogie Magazine, USA Today and many more. Peter is striving to be considered the best trick shot/artist and entertainer in the world. I encourage all of you to save the date on your calendar, as this show will be one to remember. All members and their guests are welcome.

Chef's Tip of the Month;
When using chili peppers in stews or chili, add the chili peppers the last 30 minutes of cooking to allow the full flavor of the chili pepper to come out. On a side note, for a milder chili remove the seeds from the chili pepper before adding to the stew.
