Undergraduate Research and Inquiry Few activities are as rewarding as research. In addition to the acquisition of invaluable research skills, students learn how knowledge is created, applied and how that knowledge can be overturned with new evidence or new perspectives. They also learn how to work independently on a question or problem, how to overcome obstacles and the importance of ethics and personal conduct in the research process. Undergraduate research takes place in every discipline — not only the life sciences and physical sciences, but the humanities, education, business, social sciences and creative and performing arts.

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry, OURI provides a variety of resources and support to FAU’s undergraduate students involved in research, scholarship, and creative activity. These include: • Undergraduate Research Grants Any full-time, continuing, undergraduate student at FAU with a GPA of 3.0 or higher who is engaged in research or creative activity under the mentorship of a faculty member may apply for an individual or group research grant to support their work. The research or creative activity conducted by the student generally takes the form of directed research, independent study or work on an honors thesis under the direct supervision of a faculty member, rather than work conducted to fulfill regular course or seminar requirements.

• Undergraduate Research Symposium Undergraduate students can showcase their research project findings during the Undergraduate Research Symposia offered annually on the Boca Raton and Broward campuses, as well as at the Honors College in Jupiter. Students engaged in undergraduate research may present their findings either through a poster presentation or an oral presentation. Presentations are reviewed by faculty and graduate students and prizes are awarded for top presenters. • The Florida Atlantic University Undergraduate Research Journal (FAURJ) FAURJ is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal established by the Council for Scholarship and Inquiry. FAURJ is published annually, both online and in print. The journal will afford undergraduate students the opportunity to convert research and creative projects into publishable, scholarly papers. The goals of FAURJ are to showcase high-quality undergraduate research in all fields, provide students a better understanding of research and publishing standards, and promote inquiry-based activities at FAU.
