JULY 2012 | editor’s note

uly brings one of my favorite parts of summer living in San Diego, the Del Mar Races. With the glorified Opening Day where you will find big fancy hats and snazzy dresses, it’s a fashion hay day in our backyard! I personally love dressing up specifically for opening day and gathering with friends to make our inaugural bets welcoming in horse track season, drinking mint juleps, and wearing a big hat that I only know those at the Kentucky Derby or those of English royalty to wear. It’s a fascinating day, and fortunately it lasts for a season (mid-July to early September). I have made some of the greatest memories of warm summer nights at the track with my friends, cheering for the horses and their jockey’s followed by dancing into the evening at the summer concert series! You can find the summer concert series at and head to the “season info” tab to see who will be entertaining this summer.

You may have noticed a familiar name on our cover this month… Hilfiger. It’s not the iconic Tommy Hilfiger, but the beauty gracing our cover is his niece, Jamie. Miss Hilfiger is paving her own way to fashion fame and so much more. Read about her exciting journey beginning on page 16. As the sun is slow to go down over the horizon during these summer months, the days are longer offering so much more time for socializing. It’s time to spread your social butterfly wings and park yourself at one of our beautiful beaches for the day with a group of friends and then head out with your girlfriends for a night on the town at one of the most happening nightclubs in San Diego (see page 12 for our Nightclub Review).

Staff writer

Jaimie Hilfiger is an American heiress, socialite, model and fashion icon from upstate New York. She is the daughter of Robert Hilfiger and the niece of legendary fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger. After graduating the University of Central Florida, Hilfiger moved to Beverly Hills to work in the entertainment industry. Regarding working with Fashion 5.0, Hilfiger stated “Shooting the July cover editorial was an amazing experience for me. I love everything that has to do with fashion and Fashion 5.0 is an amazing publication!”

Originally from Boston, MA, Kevin Tomanovich has been pursuing his professional career in photography and filmmaking since the age of 15. Tomanovich pursued his career in Tucson, AZ, before recently moving to San Diego County and landing a job with Eric Lingle at Web Video Solutions. According to Tomanovich, “Dean Hall, James Norton and the entire Fashion 5.0 team are awesome to work with. Their enthusiastic energy is exactly the atmosphere that I thrive working within.”

Katey Yurko is the founder of the fashion blog Yurkstyle and is a VIP host at FLUXX Nightclub. She has been in love with fashion ever since the age of three, when her Mom would take her thrift store shopping. They’d find a cute piece and rework it with add-ons like gems and ribbons. According to Yurko, “I always wanted to be involved with Fashion 5.0 because it is the only publication in San Diego that is primarily fashion-based.”

JULY 2012

Hello Fashion 5.0, Next year I am going to high school and I need to look forward to my future and make a plan. I would love to go into the fashion industry, such as editing a magazine. I would love to know what you have done to get your position in your career. Did you go to college? Did you sit around and look for jobs on the internet, or newspaper? I’m very interested in how you got your job. If you could provide me with any information with a letter back, that would be great. —Lex Mathis Hello Lex, My name is Morgan Myrmo and I received your letter to Fashion World Media, the company which founded, owns and operates Fashion 5.0 Magazine. My title with Fashion 5.0 Magazine is publisher.

The reason I got to where I am today is very simple and is a two-part system. The first part is education. I focused on my education by finishing high school and attending college right away. I graduated Point Loma High School here in San Diego, then graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics from San Diego State University. The second part of my system is to learn and focus on your talents. In college I found out I was gifted at writing. While attending San Diego State University, I was a journalist and editor for a surf magazine for nearly three years. I also wrote for my college newspaper, The Daily Aztec, for three semesters as an opinion columnist. During my last semester of college, I discovered what I wanted to do. I realized that women loved fashion magazines and that there was no business providing one on a regional level. I found what we call a “niche” market, wrote a business plan, raised capital (what we call investment money) and founded the business. The most important thing to remember is that you have your entire life ahead of you. Each day you have the opportunity to succeed. It is up to you and you alone to determine your future. Morgan Myrmo Publisher

To Fashion 5.0, I am contacting you on behalf of the curiosity of open internships at Fashion 5.0 Magazine. I hold a great interest in interning or working for the publication, whether it be in the editorial, marketing, public relations or social media departments. I have attached my resume, cover letter and a few recent writing samples. I look forward to hearing from you! —Amanda Cowan Hello Amanda, You are off to a great start! When applying for internships and jobs at any business, it is key to write a short cover letter or note as you did. Many top companies have such high interest that I recommend standing out from the pack. You can do this by attaching a one-page resume and a headshot. If you know someone within the company, make sure and name-drop. Networking is key, especially in the “industry.” Once you have branded yourself well within the industry, doors will open very quickly.

Another key is follow-up. Successful people have a full plate, yet talent is key to any business. A simple phone call or drop-in works well. Remember to follow-up during slower times. In a restaurant for example, between 2-4 p.m. on weekdays is best. Know your industry and work yourself in there. At Fashion 5.0, our offices are in a private building on 5th Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter. In this situation, the best way to meet staff is at one of our events. When you meet people, make sure and remember their names. Remembering your new contacts is key! For professionals, such as writers, photographers and designers, a sample or a link to your portfolio is essential. You are definitely on the right path, keep up the good work. Whether a particular company is looking for talent or not, remember to keep them updated on your work (every six months is good). Who knows, you might grow on them and then grow with them! Morgan Myrmo Publisher

If you have a question or comment about Fashion 5.0, please send an email to Letters may be shortened for brevity. Fashion 5.0 is not responsible for unsolicited mail.

styling tips By Janet Hamada

Janet Hamada photo by Thomas Hamada Janet Hamada turned her passion for fashion into a business as owner of online clothing boutique, Moderne ( and stylist to many. Janet developed her eye for fashion as a salesgirl at a major department store while attending UCSD. Since then Janet has learned the ins and outs of the fashion retail business. Moderne is Janet’s second online clothing boutique, catering to fashionable young adults. Through various trunk shows and shopping event options, Moderne has been able to work directly with customers who prefer the individualized styling service, as well as the convenient option of shopping online. Over the years Janet and her Moderne team have developed a styling department which provides affordable styling options for customers in the area, as well as for local social figures and celebrities. Janet’s experience working in retail has given her the skills to seek out which styles work for which body types. Realizing that not every woman is shaped like a supermodel, Janet is able to work your assets to be the star of your style. Janet has also incorporated philanthropy into her business through “Moderne Cares.” This program allows various nonprofit organizations to pair with Moderne for shopping fundraisers, both online and on site. It’s the perfect option for organizations seeking to provide fundraisers that are fresh and not restricted to a certain geographic area.

Summer is here and San Diego has a lot to offer. From beaches to day club parties, the Del Mar Races to summer concerts, there is always somewhere to go and something to do. Sure, we are known for our laidback casual beach style, but why not heat things up in your summer wardrobe? Look your best by following these summer style trends and tips!

Stay cool this summer by embracing the crochet trend. Whether you are headed to the beach, a pool party or a casual day of shopping, you can throw on a crochet top and soak up the summer sun.

Styling Tip: Pair your favorite bikini with a pair of cut-off denim shorts, wedge heels and a crochet tank for an all day, all event summer look. My Crochet Pick: “Kate” crochet top by Lovers+ Friends, available at, $70.00.

Flaunt your golden tan with lots of color. Neon and bright colors are on trend and available in bikinis, tanks, dresses, shorts, shoes, you name it. Styling Tip: Neon clothes a bit too bold for you? Throw on some neon accessories like sunglasses, a purse, nail polish or shoes and brighten up your neutral look. My Neon Pick: “Sunkissed” dress in neon pink by Lovers+Friends, available at, $153.00.

Maxi Skirts and Dresses

Cut-off Denim

Short shorts make their mark as a summer fashion staple and cutoff denim shorts are coming in hot for 2012. Paired with wedge heels or flip flops, cut-off shorts are coming in different sizes, lengths and fabrics. Styling Tip: Keep it stylish and unique with a little DIY. You’re only a few steps away from turning an old pair of jeans into DIY cut-off denim shorts. Find a tutorial on

Long flowing skirts and dresses are a comfy “must have” for summer. With all kinds of prints, colors and fabrics, stock up on some maxis that can last you throughout the summer.

Styling Tip: Lots of people shy away from maxis because they think they don’t work for their body types. Well here’s how you, too, can rock a maxi.

Thin Figure: Think maxi dresses make you look shapeless? Pick up a maxi dress with ruffled detailed along the neckline to add a little shape. Too Tall: Maxi dresses not long enough for you? Show off those legs with a hi/lo skirt, with a higher hemline in the front and gradually longer in the back. Full Figure: Shop around and look at different fabrications. Lined or layered maxis are more likely to fall flat to the ground and not cling to your curves. My Maxi Dress Pick: “Netty” halter maxi dress by Sky, available at, $173.00.

hot spots

The Steakhouse at Azul offers both casual outdoor dining for happy hour and more upscale dining indoor for special occasions.

urban solace Modern food and boutique wines

After a long day stressful day there’s nothing that hits the spot like Southern comfort food, and there’s no place in San Diego that gets soul food right quite like Urban Solace in North Park.

Even from the outside Urban Solace has the look and feel of a homey Southern cottage. The layout inside is open and spacious but warm and inviting with candlelit tables great for an intimate dinner for two or a family celebration.

by alex McNair

Wet your whistle by selecting from beer, sweet or savory craft cocktails or organic, sustainable or bio-dynamic wines available by the bottle, glass or half-glass. Tasty non-alcoholic cocktails, loose leaf teas and organic coffees are available as well. A charcuterie plate with local salami and cheese served with syrah figgy currant jam and spiced honey will stimulate your palate as you debate between the watermelon salad or squash and goat cheese dip for an appetizer.

From the courtyard patio you can peruse the “$7 till 7” menu for an amazing deal on high-quality food. From around the fire pit you and your group can order prime options of meatloaf, pork chop or classic steak frites. Showcased for a steal at $7 a pop, wine and cocktails are available in the courtyard as well. The casual menu at the outdoor patio includes the ahi tuna poke, a refreshing starter served with a sesame ginger dressing, cucumbers and a hint of spice from wasabiinfused caviar. From the lighter bites transition into a more indulgent bite of Saint Andre, a brie-like cheese served gooey and topped with bacon and honey. While dining indoor you will be mesmerized by the backdrop of ceilingto-floor windows in the restaurant.

The menu has extensive entrée offerings, with a vegetarian option like the quinoa vegetable burger made with nuts, beans and vegetables, or the rich Momma’s Meatloaf. The chicken and biscuits defines comfort food as the gooey biscuits swim in thick, rich gravy spiced delicately with hints of sage.

All steak items are custom-aged for 28 days for increased tenderness and flavor. By selecting from a choice of toppings and sauces one can create an out-of-this-world steak experience. Try the portobello mushroom and parmesan crust for a harmonious blend. Those who enjoy seafood will swoon for the lump crab cakes, dusted with a panko topping. No mayonnaise and no other filler whatsoever, dipped lightly in a caper remoulade, the crab cake is a winning light bite. Enhance a special evening at Azul with half-priced bottles of wine on Wine Wednesdays.

For a weekend treat join the team at Urban Solace for brunch! Sundays feature a bluegrass band for even more of a Southern flare.

The patio and wine room can be rented out for special events so there is always a reason to indulge at Azul.

Even the presentation at Urban Solace will make you feel at home. Though served with garlic crostini, the whipped goat cheese could be shamelessly eaten with nothing more than a spoon. The roasted butternut squash and garlic add nutty flavors to the creamy, rich goat cheese and make this appetizer a staple.

STEPHEN FISHWICK Stephen Fishwick is an artist who really paints with a purpose. He enjoys telling stories through his paintings of living things. His passion to help educate people on the plight of endangered animals has inspired many paintings and has enhanced his career through the launch of his For Life collection. You’ll be amazed when you see his art come to life at his live art show Art Attack where music, dance and art come together. With his work available at the San Diego Zoo gift shops, Z Galleries and many other reputable places, Stephen is putting his mark all across the globe.

What most inspires your artwork? Music and Color. I am very fascinated with living things. I strive to have my paintings express sound and voice. As I am working on a piece, my goal is always to be able to hear their voices when viewing the painting. What famous artists do you most admire? I have been following some brilliant artists and have grown to really admire their work. Sebastian Kruger, Michael Flohr, Stephen Silver and the artist Bee Huff have been very influential in my life and career.

On average, how long does it take you to complete a painting? Paintings take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks. There is no set amount of time. A painting is done when it is done and I would add that not all of them make it out of the studio. I have Attention Deficit Disorder, so I work on several paintings at once.

Where can people in San Diego see or purchase your artwork? Originals are available at the Alexander Salazar Fine Art Galleries here in San Diego and of course available through me on my website I can be also found at the San Diego Zoo gift shops. What sets you apart from other artists? What sets me apart from other artists – not much. I am a guy who decided I wanted to have art as a part of my life along time ago. Sometimes it is a struggle, sometimes it is a blast. I have faith that God knows what he is doing and I can leave the rest up to him. Tell me a little bit about “Paint in Motion” and how you came up with the idea. My Live Art Show, currently called Art Attack, is speed painting to the extreme. It is paint in motion, but so much more. I wanted to add other art elements to the show so it would celebrate Art, Music, and Dance. I started in 2004, when a friend asked me if I could paint on stage at church while the band played. Since then I have traveled all over the world bringing my endangered animals focused show to different countries, different schools, different venues to raise awareness for the plight of some of our most endangered species. What gave you the idea to begin Launch Live Art Entertainment and what is the most memorable Live Art show you’ve hosted?

Launch Live Art is my company that brings live art experiences to corporate events around the world. Our mission is to have the world experience and participate in the creation of art. What pieces of art are you most proud of? Why? The paintings that I am most fond of are the ones that impact people the most. The paintings that go beyond what my initial vision is for them. If I do a painting that raises a lot of money for a charity, those paintings have the most meaning for me. What’s next? Do you have any new art pieces in the making, future goals or new companies you aim to partner with? My next goal is to develop a working studio in which we can mentor young and old artists in their art careers. Our goal is to find a space in which we can hold workshops, run our businesses, and dream our dreams.

CORY SCHNITZER Cory Schnitzer is a local artist who thinks and paints outside of the box. He uses unusual materials to create his unique artwork and he paints as if there were no boundaries. Schnitzer uses his edgy art to intrigue people by using vivid colors and abstract images. This young artist is walking proof that it’s important to do what you love because chances are, you’ll find great success in it.

What inspires your creations? I paint for fun. That is how it started and I have to constantly keep myself in that mindset business aside. When it is fun it is the most organic. I also paint to capture time, when I look back at previous work it brings me to that point in my life. As I have grown as an artist and people request my work the thrill of making sales and sheer enjoyment you see people getting out of something you create keeps me at it. What famous artists do you most admire? Too many to list…but right now I am really into Dr. Suess (I just acquired my first piece), MC Esther, Charles Bragg and Picasso. What sets you apart from other artists? So many artists keep it safe and cookie cutter and are afraid to break the “rules” that some snooty art geek implemented because he or she thought that was proper. Art has become my release or high because when I paint there are no rules or boundaries. What message does your art convey? The bright colored female pieces I like to do convey a sense of warmth, elegance and sex appeal without being too X-rated. I also like to paint edgy stuff, not things that people will be offended by necessarily but something that will intrigue you or raise an eyebrow. When Charlie Sheen was on his hot streak I did a “Tiger’s Blood” series. I would like my art to be perceived very open ended depending on who is looking at it and what kind of mood they are in, much

like a kaleidoscope. How did you go from painting as a hobby, to showcasing your work at nightclubs such as Stingaree? I was introduced to Dan Krieg, owner of Encore Entertainment. Krieg helped my art career take off as he booked me for numerous of my first big shows tying them into his events. From there I have done every show I have been offered to heighten my name and exposure. What is it like working with Mickey Avalon and what are some other musicians you have worked with? Mickey Ave is awesome. Probably one of the nicest celebrities I have met. Upon first meeting him and showing him his first piece he just wanted to talk and was showing me pictures of his art on his phone. He is really down to earth and always keeps your glass full of champagne. I have been fortunate enough to meet and land signatures on the portraits of Mickey, Fabolous, Red Foo and Sky Blu of LMFAO, Wale, and Havoc and Prodigy of Mobb Deep. I still have all of them except the LMFAO one was stolen. I want Stingaree to book Lana Del Ray so I can do a piece for her and ask her out on a date. When you’re not painting, how do you spend your free time? I go out a lot to meet people and network, this city thrives off that. I recently got into riding a late 80’s road bike I bought because I liked the blue tires. I go skateboard-

ing with my dog Ruca when it is nice out and I like to eat out and try new restaurants with friends. When I’m enjoying life my art is better, so I do my best to keep a positive mindset. Do you have any shout-outs? Everyone who has been to one of my art shows or hangs a painting of mine in their home, I wouldn’t be doing this without your support! Michael McShane, Matthew Schnitzer, my parents, RJ Casillas, Brian Klocko, Rob Tula, Ashley Phelps, Jessi Denaut, Stephanie Mercuri, Eric Ellis, James Poet, Aaron Griver, Bonnie Baker, Erik Till, Travis Lubinski, Matt Gerold, Nick Vassari, JJ Nesbitt, Oliver Lang, Kim Dooley, James and Shane Brennan, Michelle Guerin, Jack Stricker, Katy Helen Stockinger, Dru Downy Jr., Tony Barnes, Brandon Thomason and everyone part of the J.U.I.C.E. show, my family at Herringbone in La Jolla and Brian Fyfe for looking down over me proud. Cheers!

From downtown in the Gaslamp all the way to Pacific Beach, San Diego is the place to party! With so many venues there’s a place that suits everyone’s style. You’ll find live DJs and dancing, skyline views, creative cocktails and the most delicious food. Each nightclub has it’s own flare and brings something different to the table, providing you with a variety of choices and entertainment. There’s something going on nearly everyday of the week, this nightclub review is merely a sneak peak. by tori haynes

Whiskey Girl is one of the longest running venues in the Gaslamp Quarter. It recently moved locations to a larger space that has allowed for a complete redesign of the venue, while still maintaining its signature styles and customers’ favorites. It is the premier spot for a night out with friends with its entertaining karaoke and photo booth. The walls of the venue are filled with sounds from the featured live band on Monday through Thursday nights, while DJ Marc Thrasher and DJ Romeo take over Friday and Saturday nights. It is also a great spot to catch your favorite sports teams on the big screen. Whiskey Girl launched “Bingo Brunch” early June, a highly energized brunch with DJ Romeo, bottomless Pink Lady drinks and a sweet and savory twist on all your favorite breakfast items. Whiskey Girl is all about making sure the customer feels the added value in each visit. 702 5th Avenue, Gaslamp // 619.236.1616 //

We can’t wait to see the final shots of the shoot, such a killer wardrobe... which leads us to wanting to know about all the accessories you’re wearing. I’m really happy with the wardrobe today, it’s made me feel really comfortable. The accessories I’m wearing, and most of the accessories used at the shoot, are the Cuff’s of Love by i.d. X-Change and I’m actually the spokes model for the line. It’s a real big honor to become the spokes model for this line because it’s worn by all the major A-listers from Kim Kardashian, to Paris Hilton.. whom I love, Carrie Underwood, Elton John.. it’s a great, great company to represent. You’re bicoastal. You go back and forth from New York to Beverly Hills. What are some of your go-to items that you can bring from New York to California? They are both so different when it comes to fashion. The fashion in New York is very simple but very high end. Out in California you are able to have a little bit more fun with the use of more color. Some staple pieces that I like are flats, which are easy to throw in your suitcase and you can wear in both the streets of New York and Los Angeles… or San Diego! Definitely a good jacket too, I’m always cold, whether it be in mid July or late December,

and the air conditioning in places can be so crazy. A jacket [for me] is important and it can really pull together an outfit. You can always dress an outfit up or down with a pair of nice flats and a fab jacket. In all your modeling pictures, which are beautiful — you really own that glitzy glam persona. It’s you and you’re true to it. Have you always been the glitzy-glam girl? Absolutely. I love to own that because it’s so me! I couldn’t picture myself wearing something [out] that didn’t have jewels or sparkles. Not the tacky sparkles- just a little something that’ll give my outfit a push. Especially for me, that’s just who I am. That’s great you’re so open about who you are. Tell us about this new reality T.V. show, what is going to be different about this than all the others? It’s not just going to be my personal life. It’ll be my work life too. Obviously, I come from a famous family. But [the T.V. series] will show me starting a fashion line on my own with help from no one. It’ll also show my personal life, the conflicts, the team around me- which each individual has their own soap opera story... it’ll be very interesting! Speaking of Tommy Hilfiger, his line started off very red-white-andblue, logo tee’s. Then went a little bit rockstar-ish.. and is now back to tailored, minimalistic, statement wear. Have you at all been influenced by your uncle’s line?

I’m a huge fan and honestly I like every collection he comes out with. He always sticks to the classics but with a twist. His themes and what he’s inspired by each season is really cool to me and I love to know the story behind it. Obviously he inspires me, but my line is going to be way different. We want to hear all about this line of yours! It’s going to be a loungewear collection. It’s going to give women a transition from work to coming home and they won’t have to just go straight to their pajamas. It gives them an alternative. Everyone I’ve talked to loves this idea because it is needed in the market, and it’s not just your typical sweat suit, which we [women] all know too much about.

This may be tough, but what are your favorite three pieces from the spring/summer collection? Kate Hudson’s favorite summer pieces are some of my favorites as well. If I had to pick three, I would say a great accessory, such as a statement necklace, a maxi dress, such as the Goddess Maxi that Kate Hudson wore in our summer ad campaign and a pair of sunglasses, like the Boulevard Sunglasses. In building a solid wardrobe, what are a few must have items for every woman? Three solid wardrobe staples for summer are a light cotton shirt, such as the Silk-Woven Camp Shirt ($68), a pair of pants that can be worn from office to evening, such as the Chelsea Crop ($68) and a chic pair of shorts, such as the City Short ($48). Our dresses and skirts this season exude femininity and style. Plus, you can pair all these looks with gorgeous accessories, sandals, ballet flats, bags and jewelry. Kate Hudson looks absolutely stunning in this season’s campaign. What other celebrities would you like to see represent the Ann Taylor brand? We have been honored to have had incredible women of substance and style representing the brand including Heidi Klum, Naomi Watts, Katie Holmes and Demi Moore. This year, First Lady Michelle Obama was spotted wearing one of our signature Ann Taylor spring coats and we are thrilled to have Kate Hudson as the face of our summer campaign. We always strive to find inspiring women to represent the brand.

Ann Taylor Concept Store A new Ann Taylor store has recently opened in Fashion Valley Mall with a new concept in mind. The new Ann Taylor location includes a fashion-forward point of view, meaning that the favorite looks of the season are styled on the mannequins, in turn making it easier to shop. The new store added crystal chandeliers, dressing rooms now with floral wall coverings in a private lounge area and finally an oversized touch-screen monitor has been added which enables clients to visit The chic and stylish new store is sure to be a hit here in San Diego.

MODELMONDAYS What’s happening in local fashion? Hello everyone, I’m Michael Lee, the new editorat-large of Fashion 5.0, and I will be bringing you new stories and commentaries about various fashion trends and events shaping our city. This month’s story is about the relaunch of Modeling Mondays. Earlier this year, I established Blind Eye Productions (BEP), a new company that shoots photos and creates video for the local fashion and nightlife industries. Modeling Mondays, first launched in September 2011, is a collaboration of local talent from all fashionrelated fields that come together to build portfolios for the entire team. Model Mondays usually takes place at A Style Concierge, the salon I founded that is located on 5th Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter. I’ve been dabbling in photography myself and shot with the BEP crew for a Modeling Mondays shoot in June at Pasha Lounge. This was yet another stylish and creative photo shoot at one of San Diego’s hottest new hookah establishments. Now that you know who I am and what I do, stay tuned for more fashion stories coming your way, as I seek out the coolest events, styles, designs and trends in your world of fashion.

Self-Tanning f o r

t y pes

exfoliate One of the most important steps in prepping for your tan is exfoliating properly. Make sure to shower a few hours before you plan on using self-tanner. Use a soap or body scrub such as Decléor Fruit Seeds Body Scrub with a loofah to exfoliate every inch of your skin.

self-Tanning vs. spray tan Tanning products come in all different forms from mousse, sprays, lotions, gels, and more. These products contain DHA, or dihydroxyacetone—the active ingredient that changes the color of the topical layer of the skin. Be sure to wash/scrub your hands immediately after application, as orange palms will be a tell-tale sign of your self-tanning secret. Recommended products:

•S t. Tropez Bronzing Mousse (great for instant color and starting out your summer tan) •C larins Self Tanning Instant Gel • J ergens Natural Glow Firming Daily Moisturizer Self-Tanners • Fake Bake Flawless Self-Tanning Liquid • Million Dollar Tan - Tan Icon Sunless Tanning Spray (great for all skin types)

moisturizing & maintaining Now that you have a nice, golden, natural-looking tan, it’s important to maintain it. Using a body lotion to keep the skin hydrated will help your tan last longer, and will also serve to minimize splotching. By meagan brown

Summertime is upon us, which means it’s time to show more skin! Starting your summer tan is easier and safer then ever before! Get the sun-kissed glow you’ve always wanted (without the worry) with the only safe way to tan: self-tanner. Use these tricks of the trade to get a perfect, natural-looking tan, and maintain it for months to come.

Crabtree & Evelyn Avocado Olive Basil Skin Nourishing Body Butter Available online at, $34.00

Recommended products: • Nars Laguna Body Illuminator- Golden Bronzer (deposits more color without transferring and will wash off once you take your first shower) • Crabtree and Evelyn Avocado, Olive & Basil Skin Nourishing Body Butter (to hydrate the skin) • Fake Bake Golden Faux Glo - Shimmer (a bronzer that will wash off in the shower)

an account about dating someone you met in a bar

By HaYley Underwood

Hayley Underwood is just a girl, like any other, who has had more than her fair sure of great, and not so great, dates. A San Diego native, Hayley graduated from UC, Santa Barbara with a BA in English and Art History, which lead her to a career at InStyle Magazine and Today Hayley is a development producer at Shilo, working with clients such as Project Runway, Verizon and McDonald’s.

Like myself, I’m sure you’ve been told repeatedly that you don’t meet your soul mate at a bar. One probably shouldn’t meet their one and only while downing Fireball shots and loudly singing power ballads in a crowded room that smells faintly of beer-soaked Berber and broken dreams. But damn it all if I haven’t tried to prove that saying wrong, because I love to be the exception to the rule, or at least the one to win a good, or occasionally not so good, challenge. This challenge was accepted one fateful St. Patrick’s Day while I was living in LA. I found myself in a local pub full of lads and lasses looking to get lucky. However, after a few cheers, a few jigs, a few slugs of a pint, the night dissipated into a blur of darkened despair. I awoke the next morning in a heap of cheap stripper glitter and runny mascara. My life was looking pretty bleak, until I looked at my phone and saw a message from “Dr. Paddy’s Pub” inviting me to drinks. I didn’t remember meeting this fellow, but his alias in my phone sure made him seem intriguing. I was wrong. As I didn’t meet this guy through a friend I couldn’t get all the gossip on him via word of mouth, so I did what I had to do. I hit up my BFF, Google. Dr. Paddy’s Pub was a resident relationship and mental health advisor on a very popular daytime show. However, my search was rendered unnecessary the moment he picked me up. Dr. PP was the

type of guy who loved to tell you what he did and who he was, regardless if you had asked. He was just “That Guy” and he was just that awful. After getting drinks at some obnoxious “be seen” LA spot, I decided to call it a night. We got in his car and I thought I was in the clear. I was wrong. Apparently, he had to get something from his house before dropping me off at mine. No sooner had I walked into his apartment, which was adorned with a large shrine to himself above a ridiculous white leather couch seated atop an even more ridiculous animal print rug, it became apparent that this was not a quick drive-by. I rapidly declined his advances like a shotgun-wielding farmer. The doctor did not take kindly to this. During the drive back to mine, he was silent, huffing and puffing every now and then like some insolent, spoiled child, until it seemed as though he could no longer hold his thoughts in. Spewing out of him with vigor and malice, his word vomit was both vile and mildly humorous. It was like see-

ing your younger brother throwing up after his twenty-first birthday. Sure, it’s gross, but it’s also kind of funny. Basically, he was full of accusations and expletives galore as he drove me home and finally dropped me off. Yet, five minutes later, my phone rings. It’s Dr. PP. Decline. It rings again and again, so I turn my phone off. The next morning I have 20 texts and half as many voicemails. He sounded needier than a drunk girl singing “Somebody That I Used to Know” in a bar where she knows her ex will be as he begged me not to sell an account of our date to the tabloids. I never did sell the story, nor did I alert his tv show host of how her “relationship expert” handles his relations. Oh, and if you’re still looking for advice, here it is: Don’t go out with a “dating expert” you met in a bar. No matter how much you love a good challenge, no matter how satisfied you are with Google’s search results, you will always be wrong. Very, very wrong.

Bonus tip: A better place to meet a good guy might be volunteering. Not only are you doing good, but you’ll meet a lot of new people.
