they finished with the first set of birdhouses, they started searching for more. “I look in the Crooks marketplace on Facebook every day. You’ll almost always find somebody putting bird houses on there plus there are rummage sales we might check out,” Ron said. “One older lady whose husband had died gave us a ton of birdhouses he had built. I just kept going back there to get another 10 or 15 until she said there were no more.” On top of the old birdhouses, they began taking old wooden boxes they’d find or buy on rummage sales and convert those into homes for their winged friends. Dalton and Ron have also turned odd items such as pans and cowboy boots into birdhouses. “I do the sawing and screwing and air-nailing,” Ron said. “Dalton does the painting and comes up with the ideas and designs, and picks up the tools – and asks a million questions about how we’re doing it. We sit in our old hoop shed and work away in there, then leave our mess and come back a day or two later.” Dalton’s sister, Tori, helps paint floral images on a lot of the houses. Dalton likes do a project and “get it out of the way.” Ron said, “After you work for a little while, you’ve got to take a break and that revolves going to the convenience store and getting something to take a break with. Dalton likes the painting and the breaks.” When the weather turned cold last winter, Dalton’s mom, Ronae Foster, told the pair to bring their work into the house.
