For many years in the early days Hutchinson County, United Brethren was the only English-speaking church around. “For a long time, the Catholics stuck with Latin, the Mennonites stuck with German, and so on,” said Dennis. The United Brethren in Christ was the first Christian denomination to begin on American soil. In the mid-1700s, colonists frequently gathered at independent religious gatherings during “The Great Awakening.” In 1767, a “Great Meeting” was held in a big barn in Lancaster, Penn. William Otterbein, a German Reformed pastor, traveled 30 miles from York for the event. He listened to a Mennonite preacher named Martin Boehm. Otterbein was amazed at how he and Boehm had the same religious experiences and believed the same things. After the speech, Otterbein embraced Boehm and said loud enough for everyone to hear, “Wir sind bruder!” which meant “We are brethren!” It was the start of a movement and, eventually, the United Brethren denomination.
