The houses hanging in their own stand of trees have done well through the winter because Ron anchors them to the trees since they get beat up when left to swing. Ronae said, “Once people in town heard about what we’re doing, we’ve had a lot of unique donations to use with the birdhouses – things like bags of wine corks and beer caps. We had a lady from church donate a whole bunch of her mother-in-law’s old jewelry that they didn’t know what to do with. We have some houses that are pretty gaudy.” Ron added, “When people make the effort to save something for us, we thought we’d better use it. The other day, a gentleman from Crooks whose father had just passed away brought out some deer antlers. So we started adding those to a deer house or two.” Thursday nights in the summer, Critter’s Bar in Crooks hosts motorcyclists and others at “Thursday Night Thunder.” Each week includes an auction of items to benefit a charity or worthy cause such as the Crooks Daycare Center, Tri-Valley Archery or a local woman fighting cancer. Dalton decided to start giving birdhouses to the auctions.
