HEAD START

As Head of School, watching moments of Far Hills tradition fills me with pride, and moments of newness fill me with excitement. The 2022–23 school year has been filled with both!

On the first day of school, we held the traditional Bell Ringing and Tote Bag Ceremony, which was filled with smiles and high fives (see page 4). Parents connected at Grade-Level Coffees (see page 7). We had an incredible turnout at the Fall Secondary School Fair (see page 6). And in a newer tradition, the Falcon took the field at our All-School Pep Rally (see page 6)!

This fall, we introduced PC After-Parties, giving parents attending our Parents Committee meetings a taste of the student experience at Far Hills (see page 7). Parents soared through the air on the high elements of the Ropes Course and problem-solved during a STEAM lesson in the Learning Commons. We even had one parent tell us, “Honestly, it is one thing to hear about this course and quite another to actually do it. I left the course this morning feeling pumped, excited, proud, and capable!” (Thank you for the gracious note, Kat Brucchieri Pˇ29, ˇ31!)

Perhaps one of the biggest moments of excitement for us this school year was the unveiling of the stateof-the-art Learning Commons (see page 10). During our campus master planning process in 2017, we identified the physical improvements to our campus

that would make the most significant positive impact on our learners—and our teachers. During the months of the summer of 2022, we aspired to transform what was known as the Arcadium space into a vibrant, interactive Learning Commons for all grades. And we did it! Along with that, the footprint and look of the Main Entrance to our school changed, ramping up security measures and giving visitors a whole new experience as they enter the building. If you haven’t had the chance to see it for yourself, we invite you to visit us.

And in a mix of tradition and newness, Falcon’s Find returned to an in-person store on campus (see page 5)!

And that was all just at the start of the school year!

I am delighted to present you with this edition of Pages, which is filled with many compelling photos and stories from our school year so far. We’re pleased to share all of Far Hills Country Day School’s latest and greatest with you by way of our beloved magazine.

Enjoy and be well,

A HOLE-IN-ONE CELEBRATION

On September 16, 2022, the Parents Social ventured to a tee-rific venue: the USGA Golf Museum. Not only did parents have the opportunity to mix and mingle among one another, but they also were able to putt on the Pynes Putting Course, a 9-hole Par 3 course fashioned after the Himalayas Course at St. Andrews, and receive a guided tour through the museum.

Thank you to our Board of Trustees and Parents Committee for their constant support and dedication. Special shoutout to our Golf Chairs, PJ Calello, and Kenneth “Ken” Bernard, for giving parents a taste that our Golf Classic can be FORE everyone—golfers and non-golfers alike.

During the pandemic, The Falcon’s Find was forced to close its doors, however, we proudly reopened the doors this fall with shelves stocked with dress code staples and exciting spirit wear, including jackets, hair bows, Yeti mugs, and more! Next time you’re on campus, stop by The Falcon’s Find across from the Cafe. The store is open Wednesday and Friday mornings, 8–9 a.m., as well as during on-campus events such as Parents Committee meetings. Please note the store is cashless; all major credit cards are accepted.

SECONDARY SCHOOL FAIR

On Thursday, September 22, 2022, Far Hills hosted our Secondary School Fair, giving Grade 7 and 8 students and parents the opportunity to listen, ask questions, and speak directly with nearly 100 admission personnel from top boarding and day schools across the country.

p (Left to right) Kesi Mononia '24, Faith Adamo '24, and Evie Waters '24 listen to an admissions representative talk about the benefits of attending his school during the Secondary School Fair on September 22, 2022.

Before the doors opened to the public, Far Hills students and their parents listened as keynote speaker Rachel Stone, Head of School at Canterbury School in New Milford, CT spoke about the boarding school experience. Then, panelists Teddy Wenner, Dean of Admission at Blair Academy; Edwin Núñez, Director of Enrollment Management, at The Pingry School; Meg Ahern, Director of Admission and Financial Aid, Morristown Beard School; and Anna Birnbaum, Senior Associate Dean of Admission, Millbrook School gave Far Hills students and parents a balanced look at the many options they have for secondary school. They provided helpful insights into the application process, as well as how to figure out if a school is the right fit. Our students dressed the part, asked informed and intelligent questions, and started their secondary school journeys confidently and excitedly.

We’ve got spirit. Yes, we do. We’ve got spirit, how about you?! The Far Hills community showed up to our All-School Pep Rally on Friday, September 30, 2022, decked out in green and white. From tutus to face paint, to some of our new gear in The Falcon’s Find, everywhere we looked, we could see Falcon Pride! We cheered for our fall athletics teams, we sang and danced, we enjoyed some delicious food thanks to the food trucks, and, most importantly, we connected with each other. A special thank you to our incredibly impressive alum who returned to campus to join in on the fun. It is always such a joy for you to return back to your forever home. Once a Falcon, always a Falcon.

November 1–4, 2022, we were very excited to welcome back Grandparent and Special Friend's Reading Week at Far Hills for Preschool, Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 students! What a special time for some of our student's loved ones to see their classroom, meet their classmates and teacher, and read a specially picked out story for the class. Our halls were filled with so much extra love. Thank you to all our grandparents and special friends that took time out of their day to come and and read a story to the class. And a special thank you to all of our volunteers that helped direct our special guests. We couldn’t have done it without you!

FOOD, FUN, AND BASKETBALL!

On Tuesday, November 22, 2022, Far Hills continued its tradition of inviting high school alumni back to campus to reconnect with one another and their teachers. This year, we opened up the Athletic Center for some spirited—but friendly— competition, inspired by our beloved Upper School 3v3 basketball tournament. While our alum didn’t get dressed in costumes like they did when they were students (maybe next year!), they enjoyed shooting around, catching up, and seeing all of the exciting changes that have taken place since they walked our halls. Thank you to all of the alum who joined us!

THE LEARNING COMMONS

The Hub of EdTech at Far Hills

In 2017, an idea was born.

During Far Hills Country Day School’s campus master planning process, the administration identified priority physical improvements to the campus that would make the most significant positive impact on the School’s community as a whole. This included reenvisioning the Main Entrance and transforming what was known as the Arcadium space into a vibrant, interactive Learning Commons and adding two breakout rooms.

“Our teachers are amazing, our classrooms are bright, airy, and open,” said Linda Corcoran Pˇ21, Far Hills Country Day School Director of Engagement and Philanthropy. “But, we identified a need for an academic space that could serve as the heart of all Far Hills has to offer—an interactive, dynamic and flexible place where students and teachers could problem-solve creatively and move Far Hills’ goals forward.”

The idea behind the Learning Commons was to provide a space for Far Hills students to feel inspired and curious, to be empowered to ask questions and explore ways to find the answers to them. Not only did this mean creating a new space, but it meant expanding curriculum offerings.

“Far Hills needed a space that connects the five subjects of STEAM— science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics; a spot where

Pictured above are: (front row, left to right) John Palmer '28, Luke Isgro '27, Chase Frerich '27, Blaine Frerich '28, and Leo Pliutsinski '28; (back row, left to right) Aidan Irene '27 and Ben Sobel '27

not only the students can collaborate with their peers, but also where our teachers can collaborate with other departments,” said Far Hills Country Day School Director of Technology Oliver Forsythe Pˇ33.

Aligning with the school’s mission, STEAM was prioritized to further prepare students for success by teaching them ever-important critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

“The ability to inspire innovation and exploration is a lifelong tool,” said Forsythe. “Our STEAM curriculum is designed to impact students throughout their Far Hills experience and beyond. We are motivating our students to embrace collaboration and engagement.”

“STEAM creates a basic framework to think critically, but also contributes to collaboration, creativity, and leadership,” said Pat Barry, Director of Lower School. “These skills are vital for a child’s development and will provide them the skill set to thrive in any environment. It will allow them opportunities in the future to be ahead of their peer group because of the foundation they received in the Learning Commons. These skills are integral to any educational endeavor or job that they pursue.”

Pictured inset is Anaiya Patel '28 taking instruction in the Learning Commons. Pictured right is STEAM Teacher Lauren Kelly (pictured far right) working with Chase Frerich '27 and Ben Sobel '27 during Coding, Robotics, and STEAM Enrichment.

This meant the school had a lot of work to do over the 2022 summer break.

USA Architects of Somerville, NJ, designed a space meant to be functional, versatile, and inspiring. Natoli Construction of Pine Brook, NJ, brought USA Architects’ vision to life.

Michael Petillo Pˇ22, ˇ23 played an integral role, too. As Chairman of the Buildings and Grounds Committee of the board, he was a member of the Learning Commons team effort through concept, budget, planning, and completion. He took on special projects, including finishes on the vintage ceiling/roof, elevating the look of the ceiling, and repaving the parking lot and Main Entrance sidewalk.

Far Hills opened its doors for the 2022–23 school year on Monday, September 12, 2022, and those doors led to a new Main Entrance,

the state-of-the-art Learning Commons, and two incredible breakout rooms.

“This bright space with cutting-edge technology sits at the heart of our school, engaging students of all ages,” said Head of School Georgia S. Zaiser. “I am proud of what we accomplished to instill a love of learning in our students.”

“Students now have a place to learn that is customizable to their needs,” said Forsythe. “The Learning Commons provides a space large enough to spread out, but also find a spot small enough to collaborate with peers.”

Lauren Kelly was hired as the STEAM Teacher for Far Hills. Lauren has 16 years of teaching experience and is currently working on her master of education in curriculum and instruction: technology leader, anticipating completion in June of 2023. She is an Apple Certified teacher and a member of the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA).

Pictured are (front to back, left to right): Kiran Lucas '28, Stella Ingenito '28, faculty member Patty Sullivan, Charlotte Macy '28, and Cash Blanco '28.

“Children learn through discovery—by asking questions and solving problems,” said Kelly. “The Learning Commons allows me to help foster that discovery through building, coding, apps, robotics, and projects, and also allows me to offer support to other teachers in their subject areas. Students who come through the space find ways to innovate, work together, and communicate, and through that, they can develop an authentic love of learning.”

“The Learning Commons checks all the boxes a student needs to succeed,” said Forsythe. “Students can present to their classmates one day, build a robot the next, and work on their Expo project the day after that…all in one space.”

In the words of Matt Mullenweg, social media entrepreneur, and creator of WordPress, “Technology is best when it brings people together.” That’s exactly what we intend to do in the Learning Commons. l

ALUMNI GROVE

On June 6, 2022, Far Hills Country Day School unveiled Alumni Grove, a peaceful, picturesque corner of campus dedicated to the families who have sent multiple generations of children to the school. Starting with the four alumni families who entered for the 2021–22 school year, Alumni Grove will continue to grow each year as other alumni enroll their children at the same school they attended.

“Far Hills taught me the importance of teamwork and collaboration. The foundation of each school year started with the Northern Experience (Grade 8 Adventure Trip) and set the tone for the entire year. Jack Kielty '12 Donates Jersey to Far Hills

By the time Jack graduated from Far Hills Country Day School in 2012, he had developed his skills as a center back in soccer and as a long-stick defenseman in lacrosse. Outside of FHCDS, he played with the Patriot Lacrosse Club and the Stronghold Soccer Club.

Upon graduation from FHCDS, Jack attended Delbarton. He was fortunate to play on 7 state championship-winning teams: Delbarton Varsity Soccer (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015) and Delbarton Varsity Lacrosse (2014, 2015, and 2016). Jack was a multi-year Captain for both soccer and lacrosse.

Jack was recognized in many ways during his high school years. He was a member of the New Jersey Under Armour All-American Lacrosse team and the All-Tournament team. He was named Morris County Soccer Player of the Year, NJ Boys Soccer Player of the Year, Gatorade All-American, and USA Today All-American. He was named NJ Lacrosse Defensemen of the year and Player of the Year. Jack also received the Delbarton Student-Athlete of the year award as a senior.

Jack was recruited to play lacrosse for the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish. While at Notre Dame, Jack started and played in all but 1 game during his five years. Jack was the team Captain in 2020 and returned as a graduate student in 2021 when he was again named Captain. Jack was a three-time NCAA All-American (1st Team in 2021), was named to the prestigious Tewaaraton Award watch list in both 2020 and 2021, and was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2021.

Jack was the #9 pick in the Premiere Lacrosse League college draft in 2021, joining the Cannons Lacrosse Club. Jack has now completed two seasons with the PLL; in those two seasons, he has started and played every game for the Cannons.

Jack works for the CM&F Group and resides in Chicago. This fall, Jack donated his Cannons Lacrosse Club jersey to Far Hills Country Day School.

ALUM ON CAMPUS

James “Pito” Walton III '14 Named Captain of Princeton's Hockey Team

James “Pito” Walton III graduated from Far Hills Country Day School in 2014 and went to the Lawrenceville School for his high school years. There, he played on the varsity hockey team his first three years, lettered in lacrosse, and was the golf team captain.

During high school (2016 and 2017), Pito also represented the Atlantic District at the USA Development Camps.

When Pito was a high school senior, he decided to play outside of school for the North Jersey Avalanche, a nationally ranked hockey organization. That year, as a defenseman, he had 25 points in 47 games and was the team’s Newcomer of the Year. The team was Tier1 Elite and AYHL Champions and was a quarter-finalist at the USA Hockey Nationals.

Pito committed to Princeton in February 2018 and graduated from Lawrenceville that year.

After Lawrenceville, he played for the Coquitlam Express for one season in British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). He was named to the league All-Rookie team and was the team Defenseman of the Year. He had 36 points in 58 games.

He enrolled at Princeton in the fall of 2019 and has been a regular defenseman on the team. He has played in 56 games over two seasons; his sophomore year was canceled due to COVID-19.

He received Princeton Hockey’s Hobey Baker Trophy, awarded annually to that Princeton freshman hockey player who, among his classmates, in play, sportsmanship and influence have contributed most to the sport.

He has also been on the ECAC All-Academic all three years at Princeton. A politics major, he will graduate in May 2023.

Pito is the son of Jim and Betsy Walton and brother to Isabel “Bella” Walton, who graduated from Far Hills Country Day School in 2011 and Tulane in 2019 and is now an elementary school teacher in New York City.

KATIE FOSTER

Met the Author of a Book Used in Our Curriculum

Over the summer, Upper School English Teacher Katie Foster went to an author’s talk at a local library on the Cape. Lauren Wolk is the author of the book Echo Mountain that Ms. Foster taught Grade 6 students last school year. The book was set during The Great Depression and Ms. Foster said, “Meeting and questioning an author helps us develop a better understanding of a text for both students and teachers alike.” Ms. Foster plans to incorporate another one of Lauren Wolk’s books into the curriculum this school year.

After two years of study that included 60 hours of coursework, a great deal of professional reading, and a 100-hour practicum tutoring a student diagnosed with dyslexia, the OrtonGillingham Academy has approved Gemma Keremedjiev’s application for Associate status. She will maintain her ongoing relationship with her mentor, OrtonGillingham Fellow Dr. Pledger Fedora.

LAUREN KELLY Technology with Purpose

STEAM Teacher Lauren Kelly attended the Innovation and Collaboration conference at Peck School this summer. The conference included exploring the Innovation and STEM Programs at Peck School. This was a great opportunity to gather ideas for revamping our STEAM (previously known as L&D and DLD) program. Ms. Kelly said, “Technology can be inserted with purpose into nearly every lesson, and collaboration is the key to innovation.”

2021-2022 IMPACT REPORT

23 PAGES | WINTER | 23 PAGES | WINTER | 23
Gavin O'Hare '22 is surrounded by joy during recess.

Dear Friends,

I am delighted to share the Far Hills Country Day School Impact Report for the 2021-22 academic year. This past June, my son, Wilder, graduated with the Class of 2022 just as I completed my service as Far Hills’ Board of Trustees Chair. It was a bittersweet time, knowing certain chapters were ending while exciting new ones were beginning (for both of us!)

Yet, as you will see from this report, there was much to celebrate, most notably that we surpassed our fundraising goals for the year.

This success would not have been possible without the steadfast support of all those listed on these pages. We recognize and honor you and the 400+ donors and volunteers who selflessly gave their time, talent, and treasure to our school. Parents, grandparents, alums, faculty and staff, legacy families, and friends are all engaged in our efforts, each giving joyfully and generously. Our Far Hills family is strong, passionate, and committed. Our students are nurtured, challenged, and inspired. And we, the Board of Trustees, are grateful.

Far Hills is thriving, and the opportunities for expanded programming are plentiful as we continue to move forward with our Together We Build the Future of Far Hills capital campaign. With almost $7 million raised towards our $10.5 million goal, we have accomplished much in the areas of academic support and enrichment and the creation of dynamic new learning spaces. If you have the opportunity, I encourage you to learn more about the campaign’s priorities. I assure you that the vision set forth by Georgia, the Senior Leadership Team, and the campaign committee is aspirational and inspirational. It is a strong and compelling roadmap for Far Hills’ future.

As a proud alumnus, the father of two additional alums, a former faculty member, and now a Trustee Emeritus, my heart will always be with Far Hills. It has been my great pleasure to serve as your Board Chair. And I know, beyond a doubt, that the school and its future will be in excellent care under Joe Ferraro’s dynamic and dedicated leadership.

In closing, I simply wish to say thank you to each and every one of you who stepped up to help make our school stronger for the children who are here now and for those who will follow. It is your generosity, your belief in our mission, and your unwavering support of our teachers and students that makes Far Hills so very special.

With gratitude, Christopher A. Merton '82 Board of Trustees Chair, 2018–2022

CUMULATIVE GIVING

We are deeply grateful to all of those below who showed extraordinary generosity towards Far Hills as we emerged from the shadows of the last two years and back into the light. Behind each name is a person or a family who chose to invest in the students and teachers of Far Hills. Whether inside the classroom, or outside of it, we strive to be responsible stewards of their contributions and their faith in us.

TOGETHER, WE BUILD THE FUTURE OF FAR HILLS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

Aspiration. Achievement. Adventure. These are the tenants of our Together We Build the Future of Far Hills Capital Campaign, a multi-year $10.5 million fundraising initiative with four goals:

• Strengthen and Expand Academic Support and Enrichment

• Create Dynamic New Learning Spaces

• Develop, Sustain, and Retain Expert Teachers, and

• Ensure the Financial Sustainability of Far Hills.

This past year, the generosity bestowed upon us by our campaign donors allowed us to transform the Arcadium into a state-of-the-art multimedia Learning Commons. Located in the main hallway, the Learning Commons is the heart of our building and the epicenter of collaborative learning and creative problem-solving for our 21st-century students. Thank you to all of the Together We Build the Future of Far Hills donors for their support of our vision and their generosity.

Generous gifts from FH supporters doubled and/or tripled their Far Hills Fund donation(s) with a few extra steps from their laptops or phones, and we are incredibly appreciative.

Please be sure to check if your employer offers a matching gift program. It’s a great way to maximize your gift and support Far Hills Country Day School.
