Welcome from the Head of School (HOS)

Welcome to the 2022–2023 school year! I hope you had a restful and joyful summer and feel rejuvenated and ready to tackle this next school year. During the summer months, the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and staff have been working hard on many projects that we hope you find just as exciting as we do. You will notice that the new Far Hills brand is further expanding throughout the campus both internally and externally.

Welcome from the Board Chair

As the son of a lifelong educator, it’s a particular joy to be before a room full of teachers. Before he retired in 2007, my father, Dr. Charles Ferraro —who some of you have met at a few grandparents reading days—had taught in NYC private schools; worked for the Morris County Superintendent’s Office; conducted Middle States Evaluations (including of a number of schools attended by our graduates); and served as both principal of Memorial School (a public K–4 elementary school) and superintendent of schools in North Haledon, which is a public K–8 district.

From childhood to adulthood, I had a front row seat to the joy, the stresses, the frustrations, the idiosyncrasies and the successes and satisfactions of my father’s life in K–8 education. I mention all of this to better clue you into the understanding, appreciation and respect I have for what you do. I often saw what worked and what didn’t—who and what helped and who and what got in the way—all while my father tried his best to serve the academic, emotional, and social needs of children in their most formative K–8 years.

You’ll come to learn I’m a sucker for a good “quotable quote,” and a few weeks ago dad sent me one that he came across and thought I might like. Attributed to Princeton professor

of sociology Marvin Bressler on the occasion of his retirement from teaching:

“Unlike most people, teachers don’t confront the agony of choice between God and Mammon. They don’t have to be exceptional people—they do holy work as a routine obligation of their careers. The trustees tell me my job is to instruct the young on the splendors of the true, the good, and the beautiful, and they regularly send me a check for my pains. Less fortunate people, occupied with selling companies to each other, are obliged to redeem their lives outside their work.”

I know we aren’t a parochial school, but no matter your beliefs I hope you won’t think me out of line for recognizing that for the past three years, each and every one of you has performed holy work—work for our children blessed in its pure goodness. Of all the things I saw Dr. Ferraro handle, a pandemic wasn’t one of them.

You showed up when many did not. You kept our children educated, did your best to alleviate their anxiety while working through your own, and brought joy to our children under extraordinary circumstances, when so many teachers in so many schools throughout New Jersey and the nation simply did not. And as the poem says, “You kept your heads when all about you were losing theirs and blaming it on you.”

As families return, a huge priority of mine is kicking things off from a posture of excitement, openness, participation and presence. This is one of the most critical re-openings we will ever have, perhaps second only to when we first opened our doors. That is because we are finally pivoting away from two things previously alien to our experience that I hope we don’t have to revisit for a very long time, if ever again:

The first pivot is away from a protective and defensive posture— from showing our love by actually closing our doors, and then by putting up barriers and physically distancing ourselves. From keeping out parents and loved ones and keeping very young children physically apart. I think there’s still work to do to focus away from the psychic trauma of the worst of the pandemic-induced separation, and toward regaining not just security but a carefree sense of freedom and joy—not danger—in playing and hugging and singing and being together again.

The second pivot is away from the constant stress of being on a reactive footing. We’ve played enough “crisis roulette.” It’s time to take a deep breath, recognize the great leadership we have in place and grow back stronger by looking ahead, not behind, and by developing and executing strategic plans for the near and longterm future, which we are.

Show up, give your all, have a positive attitude, embrace implementing our new Learning Support and Enrichment Curriculum, and handle parental demands with careful strength. I’ll have your backs, even when it means getting involved in a difficult conversation or two with a parent or a trustee—or even a parent trustee.

We’ve been through too much, have accomplished too much, and have too much more to do to accept anything less. On the rougher days, never mistake an agitated or noisy few for an incredibly appreciative, happy and overwhelming majority.

I can’t wait to see what all of us accomplish.

*These words were shared by Joe during the 2022 Opening Meetings.

SchoolPass

What is SchoolPass? SchoolPass is the complete K-12 campus movement and safety solution. Consolidate student safety, physical attendance, dismissal, and parent engagement into one connected and patented platform.

At Far Hills, we use SchoolPass for parents to record student attendance so they do not need to call the office. We also use the app to run our dismissal. A student’s carpool ID is plugged in from the carline and their teacher is notified to send the student to the carline. Please take a moment to review the carline video

SchoolPass is also a digital check in/check out tool for employees. If there is ever an emergency, security needs to know who is on campus. This means you need to check in and check out daily. You can check in and check out multiple times. Please take a moment to review the check in and check out video.

Please take a moment to download the app so that you can help at dismissal and check in and check out.

P

lease familiarize yourself with this reference guide for our phone system.

On your room phones , you will see the top left buttons go to “Police” and “Intercom.” If you push the police button, it will call Bernardsville Police Station directly. Unfortunately, we cannot program 911 as a speed dial number. When you press the intercom button, you willneed to wait until you hear a double beep. Then dial 00 to page an all-school announcement. Use the hang up button when done instead of simply hanging up the headset.

If your school-issue device is not connecting to the internet, please stop by the Tech Office in Room 43 so we can troubleshoot.

Please note that cell service is spotty in a majority of the building. If you would like your cellphone to connect to WiFi, please use: FHEMP-Mobile, Password: THIS

Please do not share this with parents, students or other visitors. Do not use this on your Chromebooks or other school-issued devices. If you use this on your Chromebook, you will not have access to numerous features, such as printing. If a student uses any other WiFi at school one of our two site filters would be adjusted to allow more content to be accessed. Keep passwords private.

Guests may use THS to access WiFi. No password is required.

Walkie talkies are turned on by spinning the dial to the right. Spin the middle dial to go to the FHCDS channel. Push and hold the left side button and give it two seconds, then speak while holding. When finished, release the button. Please bring the walkie talkie with you when you go outside. They can be found in the division offices.

Student and Class Technology

Far Hills Country Day School students have access to a variety of technology in and beyond the classroom.

In Preschool, our students have access to a Fire Tablet that will allow them to log into Seesaw, use the camera, and play educational games as they relate to the curriculum.

Kindergarten through Grade 2 students have iPads that allow them access to numerous apps for their day-to-day learning experience.

Grades 2 through 8 students have Chromebooks, where they have full access to the Google Suite.

Grade 2 is our transition year, so those students will have access to both iPads and Chromebooks.

Each device is outfitted with a case to minimize wear and tear. Preschool through Grade 2 devices only go home in special circumstances as designated by the Director of Upper School and the Director of Technology.

Lower School classrooms now have Promethian Boards, which are interactive educational displays. Please view this tutorial.

For grades using Seesaw, please log in by clicking this link.

If you teach Grades 3 through 8, please create a Google Classroom for each of your classes. Please follow the directions in this link and let Tech know if you have any issues.

If you teach Grades 2 through 8, please log in to Haand sync from your Google Classroom(s) that you created.

The Hue Camera is a USB document camera that can be found in your classroom (if not, let Tech know).

You will find a Chromebook called a “Hot Spare” in your classroom if you teach Grades 2 through 8. If a student’s Chromebook is not charged or working properly, they can use the Hot Spare and see Tech later

Send Students to the Health Office

It

can be tricky to know when to send a student to the Health Office. The school nurses encourage you to send students to the Health Office for the 8 B’s:

- Blood -Bones -Burns

-Bumps (head injuries)

-Burning up (fever)

-Barf -Bowels

-Bonafide (true emergency)

Remember: “When in doubt, send them out!”

18 19

When You Do Send a Student

Where to Find AEDs

When

you do send a student to the Health Office, you need to provide them with a Travel Pass. The only exceptions to needing a Travel Pass are when there is profuse bleeding, vomiting, or asthma (if severe, do not send the student alone).

You should have a supply of Travel Passes in your classroom. There is also a supply in the desk in the Cafe. If you’re at recess, use the walkie talkie to let the Health Office know a student will be coming.

Students should be told that they are not allowed to stop in the Health Office between classes.

If you have a substitute teacher covering your class, please let them know where they can find the Travel Passes and remind them to use them if needed.

If you should need more Travel Passes, email nurse@fhcds.org.

Seizure Awareness

Far

Hills Country Day School does have a student who has a seizure disorder. The signs of a seizure may include:

-Temporary confusion; -Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs; -Stiffening of the body; -Loss of consciousness or awareness; and/or -Loss of bowel and bladder.

If someone is having a seizure, it is best to start Seizure First Aid:

-Turn the person on their side to prevent choking; -Start timing the seizure; -Stay with the person and do not restrain them; -Place something soft under their head; -Remove any restrictive clothing around the neck;

-DO NOT put anything in their mouth; and -Call 911.

Far

Hills Country Day School has AEDs (defibrillators) in four locations:

-In the front hall outside of the Health Office; -In the Athletic Center outside of the gymnasium; -In the Piazza; and -Under the scoreboard at the fields.

Where to Find EpiPens

In

the event of an allergic reaction that leads to anaphylaxis, an EpiPen will need to be administered. You can find EpiPens:

- In a cabinet behind the front desk in the Health Office;

-Next to the AED in the Piazza; and -Next to the AED in the Athletic Center outside of the gymnasium.

The EpiPen Jr. is for anyone weighing under 60 pounds. The EpiPen is for anyone weighing over 60 pounds.

Remember: Always call 911 after EpiPen is administered.

Where to Find Narcan

Narcan

is the treatment for known or suspected opiod overdose. You can find

Narcan:

-In the Health Office; and -In the Athletic Center outside of the gymnasium (with the Epipens).

Where to Find First Aid Bags

Each

classroom should have a fully stocked First Aid Bag. This should go with you out to recess, during any emergency drills, and on any field trips. The bags containing the supplies are bright red. If you need supplies to be replenished, contact the Health Office.

Field Trips

The Health Office needs to know a few things when you are planning a field trip for your students. Please send the following information to nurse@fhcds.org:

-When are you going?

-When are you returning?

-What are the names of all of the students who are going?

The nurses will provide you with any medications that the students may need. And remember, take your First Aid Bag!

The Engagement and Philanthropy Department works hard to nurture many relationships within the Far Hills Country Day School community: parents, alumni, employees, students, grandparents, friends, vendors, donors, and more.

Engagement involves the many, many events that we host. From the FunFest to the Pep Rally, Grade-Level Coffees to Gala, Parents Committee Meetings to Teacher Appreciation Week, and everything in between, this Department is involved.

This team is also behind fundraising to support everything that goes behind running a school like Far Hills Country Day School. Without their fundraising efforts, incredible upgrades like the Science Labs and the Learning Commons would not be possible.

Meet Security

Far Hills Country Day School takes school safety seriously.

Please be sure that you have your ID badge with you at all times.

Do not prop open any doors that could serve as an entry/exit point to the school building. These doors must be kept closed to ensure the safety of our students and employees. If you go outside, please close the door behind you and enter at a door that requires you to swipe your badge.

Notify security if you are going somewhere on campus. This includes, but is not limited to, the Pond, the Ropes Course, and the Athletic Fields. Even if just for a nature walk, Security needs to be aware of where all students and employees are at all times. Be sure that you have a walkie talkie with you and check that it is working before you leave the building.

Make sure that you accurately record attendence so that security is aware who is and is not on campus.

Each month, Far Hills Country Day School will hold a safety drill. We ask that you please take these drills seriously. Review the “In An Emergency” instructions on page 27 so that you are prepared.

If there is a real emergency, contact the local police using the speed dial on the phone in your room or dial 911 first.

If you have any questions about school security, including how to handle an emergency situation, please contact Kevin directly.
