Falling for Fargo’s Colors: A Fall Foliage Guide
As summer fades and cool air settles in, Fargo’s parks light up with brilliant fall color. Reds, golds, and oranges stretch across the trees, making it a great time to explore, snap a few photos, and enjoy the season before the snow flies Here's how to make the most of fall in the parks
TOP PARKS FOR FALL VIEWS
Lindenwood Park | Big trees, river views, and lots of space to walk or bike.
Forest River Park | A quiet park with winding trails and bold fall color.
Trefoil Park | Small but packed with color and great for a quick walk.
Island Park | Home to mature trees and stunning fall scenery close to downtown.
Brunsdale Park | A great neighborhood park with tree-lined paths and open space.
PEAK COLOR TIMING
PHOTO TIPS FOR FALL COLORS
LEAF IT TO THE TREES
Fargo typically sees its best fall color from late September to midOctober. Weather plays a big role, with sunny days and chilly nights helping bring out the brightest colors. The season is short, so once the trees start turning, it’s a good idea to plan your visit soon.
Looking to capture the moment? Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light. Overcast skies can also help colors pop without harsh shadows. Try taking photos along trails, near water for reflections, or with pops of color in the background. Including people or pets in your shot can add warmth and personality.
You’ll spot many native trees showing off in fall Maples bring the reds, aspens and cottonwoods turn bright yellow, and oaks shift to warm brown and rust tones The science behind the color is pretty cool too Trees that stored more sugar in their leaves during summer often have brighter fall color.
Fall doesn’t stick around long, but it brings a burst of beauty while it lasts. Grab a warm drink, head to your favorite park, and take it all in.

JANET RINER’S SAIL STORY
For Janet Riner, returning to Fargo was about more than coming home, it was about finding purpose, connection and a way to stay active for life.
A Finding Strength, Laughter and Community:
fter years spent living across the country, Janet came back to the area to care for her aging parents
As a registered nurse, she naturally stepped into the role of caregiver, and it was during this time she came across an article in Valley Senior Services’ Silver Quill about the Fargo Park District’s SAIL (Stay Active & Independent for Life) program.
“I thought, if I volunteer to teach, then I have to go. That would motivate me,” she said “Now, I don’t need a motivator I go because I love it ”
The SAIL program focuses on improving strength, balance, and mobility in older adults through lowimpact group fitness classes. But for Janet, the experience has become much more than just exercise Each Friday, she leads the strength portion of the class and shares a helpful health tip with participants, drawing on her background in healthcare and her lifelong passion for wellness
One of her favorite memories is from the early days of leading class. Fargo Parks Rec Supervisor and SAIL Instructor Damian Caron stepped out briefly and returned to the sound of laughter filling the room “The expressions on people’s faces when we tried a ‘forced laugh’ exercise were priceless,” Janet recalled “Afterwards, Damian asked, ‘What did you say to them?’”
That shared laughter has become something of a signature in Janet’s sessions “Like Damian says, ‘the laugh is my signature,’” she said with a smile
Outside of class, Janet stays active with her highenergy rescue dog and spends time swimming and exploring health topics. But it’s the community she’s found at SAIL that continues to motivate her week after week “Everyone comes from different backgrounds,” she said “We learn from each other, and we’re all trying to get healthier together ”
Her advice to others is simple: “Come and see the program. Do as much as you want to. It’s a proven fact that physical and social activity can extend your life ”
For Janet, SAIL is about showing up, for herself, for others and for the joy that comes from moving, learning, and laughing together

A Day in the Life
OF FARGO PARK DISTRICT NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
As the leaves settle and the chill of fall sets in, the work of the Fargo Park District forestry and natural resource management teams shift gears, embracing the unique challenges and opportunities these seasons bring. For Alec Miller, Natural Resource Management Supervisor, the cooler months are far from quiet They are a time of careful planning, hands-on maintenance, and thoughtful stewardship of our urban forest and natural spaces.
ALEC MILLER
AS SEASONS CHANGE
Once the trees have shed their leaves, much of the day is devoted to pruning. Deadwood is removed from mature trees to maintain their health and safety, while younger trees receive structural pruning designed to support their long-term growth This careful attention helps keep the parks healthy and resilient for years to come
When snow arrives, the focus shifts again Alec takes to the trails, grooming ski paths throughout town to maximize our community’s enjoyment of winter recreation “Trail conditions can vary greatly from year to year,” he notes “Some seasons bring snow multiple times a week, others far less We have to stay flexible and responsive to make the most of every snowfall ”
PLANNING & EQUIPMENT
Winter also marks the beginning of the next year’s planning cycle While the prairie and tree work slows down, Alec and his team turn to assessing upcoming needs, drafting management plans, and preparing contracts for prairie restorations and river corridor projects. Frozen ground provides a valuable window to access sensitive areas, like golf courses, with minimal impact.
Equipment plays a vital role during these months. From tracked side-by-sides to skid steers and loaders, these tools help the team navigate snowy terrain and complete tasks efficiently. “And of course, a good pair of wool socks is essential,” he adds with a smile.
QUIET BEAUTY & COLLABORATION
Despite the cold and occasional equipment challenges, such as freezing and mechanical issues, there is a deep appreciation for the season’s quiet beauty. “When the wind is calm and the sun shines, the parks take on a peaceful stillness you don’t get in the summer. Working outside alone in those moments is truly special.”
Collaboration is also key during fall and winter The forestry and natural resource management teams frequently partner with the maintenance team for snow removal and outdoor rink management They also work alongside the events team to prepare for seasonal activities like the candlelight ski event
FAVORITE SPOTS & ADVICE
One favorite spot to work in is along the river and wooded areas, where wildlife like owls, deer, and birds adapt to winter’s rhythm The Lemke Trail, with its minimal foot traffic, offers a serene escape from the bustle of the city.
For anyone considering a career in forestry or natural resource management, especially in a climate with four distinct seasons, the advice is clear. Be adaptable. “No two days are alike. You’ll face a variety of tasks and weather conditions, so you have to be ready for anything. And remember, ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.’ If you stay curious and keep learning, this field has endless rewards.”
STEWARDSHIP YEAR-ROUND
Through every season, the work of the Fargo Park District natural resource management and forestry teams is a vital thread in the fabric of our parks, nurturing the natural spaces that so many in our community cherish. Fall and winter may be quieter times in the natural cycle, but for those caring for these spaces, it’s when preparation and stewardship truly come to life
Paws & Parks
ENJOYING FARGO’S WINTER WITH YOUR PET
When the snow starts falling and Fargo turns into a frosty playground, it’s not just people who come bundled up and ready to enjoy the season. Our fourlegged friends are just as excited to get out and explore. Whether your pup loves bounding through snowbanks or prefers a leisurely winter stroll, Fargo’s park system offers plenty of ways to enjoy the colder months together
Winter Walks Worth Wagging For
From the winding trails of Forest River Park to the open spaces at Lindenwood, many of our parks remain open and accessible during winter Leashed pets are welcome to join you as you explore the quiet, snow-covered beauty of these spaces. Just remember to bundle up, even your dog Breeds with shorter fur or older pets may need a coat or booties for comfort and protection
Off Leash, On Point
For the high-energy pups who love a good romp, our dog parks are open yearround Yunker Farm, Village West and Brandt Crossing Dog Parks are maintained throughout the winter, giving dogs the chance to run, play, and sniff to their heart’s content Snowballs make excellent fetch toys, and there’s something magical about watching your dog leap through fresh powder
Trail Etiquette & Safety Tips
Even in winter, it’s important to be a responsible pet owner Always keep your pet leashed outside of designated dog parks, pick up after them (yes, even in the snow), and watch for icy patches that could be hazardous to both you and your pet Early evenings mean less daylight, so consider reflective gear or lights for visibility if you’re walking later in the day
Winter Fun Beyond the Walk
Looking to mix things up? Try a little winter enrichment. Teach your dog a new trick in the snow, set up a mini obstacle course, or simply make time for a snowy snuggle at your favorite park bench Fargo’s parks aren’t just for exercise, they’re the perfect setting for memory-making with your best furry friend
No matter how you and your pet choose to enjoy winter, Fargo’s parks are here for you with plenty of fresh air, room to roam and snowy scenes to explore So grab the leash, lace up your boots, and get ready to embrace the chill together

Swimming Lessons
AGES 4-14
Fargo Park District offers swimming lessons during the Fall/Winter season for ages 4-14. Participants must be 5 years old to begin in level 1. EXCEPTION: If a 4 year old has passed all requirements for Preschool Level, they may register for Level 1.
Level Overview
Children progress through a series of seven levels designed to teach the fundamentals of swimming and encourage aquatic exploration with guided instruction. In doing so, the Fargo Park District works to ensure a high level of competency is acquired by participants in both aquatic safety and swimming skills.
Pre-Level
AGES 4-5
Participants learn how to be safe around water and begin working on floating, arm and leg movements, and confidence in the water where they can touch.
Level 1
Students continue building confidence by learning the basic swimming kicks and arm strokes (whip and flutter kicks and the front and back crawl) with support from floatation devices and the instructor.
Level 2
Students focus on practicing the skill sets learned in level one and build the confidence to complete the skills without support from the instructor and/or floatation devices.
Level 3
Students begin working on their swimming endurance along with more intermediate swimming skills such as the breaststroke and diving.
Open Swim
Level 4
Students continue developing their swimming endurance and begin working on more advanced swimming strokes, such as the side stroke and butterfly. Basic lifesaving practices, such as a reachthrow technique, are introduced that focus specifically on staying safe around pools, lakes and rivers.
Level 5
Students continue developing basic, intermediate, and advanced swimming strokes, focusing on endurance, refinement, and mastery. Surface dives and diving from starting blocks are also introduced.
Level 6/Pre-lifeguarding
Students continue to develop their swimming endurance and begin learning intermediate life-saving skills. Pre-lifeguarding skills are taught in order to prepare students to be good babysitters/nannies and/or future lifeguards. This level is a benefit to any student who spends time around water during the summer months and ensures students are prepared to pass the water skills requirements for lifeguarding certifications.
Looking for the cure to cabin fever? Dive into the heated indoor pool at Open Swim! Grab your goggles and swim suit for some swimming fun.
COURTS PLUS
Tennis Program
Whether your child is just starting the game or is trying to make a local school team, we have lessons designed to take them to the next level.
Register for the tennis program at CourtsPlus.org/Tennis.
Stars Tennis
Our Stars Junior Tennis and MXP Tennis program uses a progressive court system that uses 36’, 60’ and 78’ (regular size) tennis court. Coupled with ensuring the proper racquet length and using different types of tennis balls based on age and ability, our goal is to get your child playing tennis as soon as possible. This system gives your child a visible progression to maximize their improvement.
Each of our lessons are divided up into three critical phases beginning with a warm-up emphasizing tennis specific movement and coordination. This is followed by a skill-building phase. Then, skills are practiced “live” in a competitive phase, where rallying and game conditions are experienced.
