A Day in the Life
OF FARGO PARK DISTRICT’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
SUSAN FAUS
A day in the life of the Fargo Park District’s Executive Director, Susan Faus, is as dynamic and community focused as Fargo’s parks and programs themselves. From morning coffee to community events, her days are a balance of strategic decision-making, community engagement, and finding time to connect with nature.
STARTING THE DAY OFF RIGHT
Susan’s days always begin with a grounding routine: exactly two cups of coffee, followed by a workout –whether it is a long run or a gym session. These habits set the tone for a productive day ahead. After walking her dogs, Ruby and Gemma, through her favorite local trails, she is ready to tackle the challenges of leading a growing park district.
Once she arrives at the office, she first connects with staff “It is important to me to connect with the team and align on priorities,” she shares This is often followed by reviewing her schedule, brainstorming, and catching up on emails
LEADING THE FARGO PARK DISTRICT
As the Executive Director, Susan’s role is multifaceted. “I provide direction on where we’re going as a district,” she explains. “That includes making decisions, planning initiatives and projects, and prioritizing work.” A significant part of her day involves building partnerships with external stakeholders and community leaders. Whether meeting for coffee or attending a planning session, collaboration is at the heart of her work
Behind the scenes, much of her time is spent strategizing and planning for the future “People might not realize how much thought goes into ensuring we are prepared for Fargo’s growth,” she says “We need to make sure we have the right amenities and offerings to serve our community effectively ”
ENGAGING WITH THE COMMUNITY
Community engagement is the cornerstone of Susan’s work From meeting with board members over lunch to hearing public concerns and ideas, she values every single interaction “At the end of the day, we are public servants,” she says “Listening to the community helps shape our priorities and our work ”
One current project she is most excited about is the Fargo Park District Park System Master Plan, a long-term initiative that will guide the district’s growth for the next 20 years. “It is rewarding to work on something that will have a lasting impact on Fargo’s residents,” she says with pride.
FINDING BALANCE
Amid a packed schedule, she finds moments of focus through goal setting and prioritization. “Todo lists keep me on track,” she shares. When she needs to recharge, she heads outdoors. Her favorite spots include Orchard Glen and Fargo’s extensive trail system. “Getting out into these spaces reminds me why we do what we do. It’s how I regain my center.”
ENDING THE DAY
The workday often concludes with partner events and community activities. “These events are a great way to network and strengthen relationships,” she explains. Whether she is attending a ribbon-cutting or engaging with residents, these moments are deeply fulfilling.
Reflecting on her role, she shares, “We have the most amazing job because of what we get to do for our community. It is rewarding and fulfilling, and there’s something for everyone to be involved in.” Her advice to anyone considering a career in parks and recreation? “Dive in. You’ll find it is one of the most rewarding career paths you can take ”
From strategic planning to connecting with the community, every day is different but always dedicated to “growing community through places, spaces and experiences ”

How Parks Got Their Names:
Have you ever wondered about the stories behind the names of your favorite local parks? From historic figures to geographical quirks, the names of Fargo’s parks often tell a tale of our community’s past
Elephant Park | Percy Godwin
Local Fargoans are often familiar with the curious rumor that Elephant Park gets its name from local lore that an elephant was buried in the park after a circus came to town – could it be true? While the tale sounds intriguing, the real story is less dramatic but full of charm! Percy Godwin Park is lovingly referred to as “Elephant Park” not from a buried pachyderm, but from the elephant statue that stands in one corner of the playground. So, while you won’t find any buried elephants here, you can still enjoy the whimsical sight of the statue keeping watch over all the fun
Island Park
Island Park, Fargo’s first and oldest park, might leave some scratching their heads over its name – after all, this landlocked city is a long way from any ocean or tropical paradise Before the river dike was built to protect downtown, the Red River would often flood around the park, leaving the highest point of park as a true “island”, surrounded by water on all sides While you won’t find palm trees and warm beaches, this park got its quirky moniker in the 1940s and it’s been a beloved community spot since Island Park is a reminder that sometimes nature has a funny way of creating its own islands, even in the middle of North Dakota!
Rheault Farm Park
Rheault Farm Park holds a unique place in Fargo’s history, once a thriving working farm and now a community space full of memories and fun Originally built in 1918 by two Swedish brothers who came to America seeking new opportunities, the farm was eventually purchased by Ernest Rheault in 1949 Ernest and his son worked the land until 1979, when they sold it to the Fargo Park District While Rheault Farm is no longer a working farm, its legacy as a piece of local history still thrives Now, instead of crops and livestock, it’s a place for picnics, events, outdoor fun and a bit of farming nostalgia in the heart of Fargo.
Connection over perfection.
Small moments with your kids have a big impact.
It might sound like a big task, but it’s as simple as making your child a priority in everyday moments Tonight, on the car ride home, try having an open-ended conversation about their day Or the next time you ’ re making supper, invite them to cook with you. Even in these small tasks, you ’ re building a lasting bond that makes a huge impact
A Gift to Last a Lifetime
VOLUNTEER FEATURE: VAL
Meet Val. For the past two years, Val has been a dedicated volunteer with Valley Senior Services’ Meals on Wheels program. Through her service, she delivers meals, smiles, laughter and a sense of community to seniors across the Red River Valley. After retiring from a remarkable 44-year career in long-term care, Val was in search of ways to stay connected with older adults and found the perfect fit in Meals on Wheels.
Local volunteers with Valley Senior Services’ Meals on Wheels program deliver hot meals to more than 1,400 area seniors ages 60 and older every single day.
“I enjoy visiting with the clients and making sure they’re having a good day,” Val shares. Known for wearing fun and festive leggings and often dressing in costume for holidays, she tries to add a special spark of joy in every delivery. “Some clients even take my picture to show their families. My most memorable day was when I wore a mummy outfit. One client joked, ‘Oh, I thought you were naked!’ We both had a good laugh about that.”
Beyond the fun, Val understands the deeper impact of this work. “For some, it may be the only person they see in days. It’s rewarding to know I’m brightening their day and checking in to make sure they’re doing well.”
Valley Senior Services has supported seniors for over 50 years, offering home-delivered meals, community dining, transportation, and resources for those 60+ in Fargo, West Fargo, and rural Cass, Steele, Traill, Ransom, Sargent, and Richland counties. Owned and operated by the Fargo Park District.

Level Overview
Children progress through a series of seven levels designed to teach the fundamentals of swimming and encourage aquatic exploration with guided instruction In doing so, the Fargo Park District works to ensure a high level of competency is acquired by participants in both aquatic safety and swimming skills
Pre-Level
AGES 4-5
Participants learn how to be safe around water and begin working on floating, arm and leg movements, and confidence in the water where they can touch.
Level 1
Students continue building confidence by learning the basic swimming kicks and arm strokes (whip and flutter kicks and the front and back crawl) with support from floatation devices and the instructor.
Level 2
Students focus on practicing the skill sets learned in level one and build the confidence to complete the skills without support from the instructor and/or floatation devices.
Level 3
Students begin working on their swimming endurance along with more intermediate swimming skills such as the breaststroke and diving.
Level 4
Students continue developing their swimming endurance and begin working on more advanced swimming strokes, such as the side stroke and butterfly. Basic lifesaving practices, such as a reachthrow technique, are introduced that focus specifically on staying safe around pools, lakes and rivers.
Level 5
Students continue developing basic, intermediate, and advanced swimming strokes, focusing on endurance, refinement, and mastery. Surface dives and diving from starting blocks are also introduced.
Level 6/Pre-lifeguarding
Students continue to develop their swimming endurance and begin learning intermediate life-saving skills. Pre-lifeguarding skills are taught in order to prepare students to be good babysitters/nannies and/or future lifeguards. This level is a benefit to any student who spends time around water during the summer months and ensures students are prepared to pass the water skills requirements for lifeguarding certifications.
Lifeguard Certification
AGES 15+
American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification courses are available this spring. Each course is limited to the first ten paid registrants. The lifeguard courses are now blended learning courses; this requires registrants to complete the online portion prior to the in-water portion of the course.

Star Tennis
Our Star Junior Tennis and MXP Tennis program uses a progressive court system that uses 36’, 60’ and 78’ (regular size) tennis court. Coupled with ensuring the proper racquet length and using different types of tennis balls based on age and ability, our goal is to get your child playing tennis as soon as possible. This system gives your child a visible progression to maximize their improvement. Each of our lessons are divided up into three critical phases beginning with a warm-up emphasizing tennis specific movement and coordination. This is followed by a skill-building phase. Then, skills are practiced “live” in a competitive phase, where rallying and game conditions are experienced.
