Sechs Tage, fünf Kinos und mehrere Hundert animierter Kurz- und Langfilme aus der ganzen Welt, das findet man schweizweit nur in Baden und nennt sich Fantoche. Wir starten in unsere siebte Runde und haben erfreuliche Neuigkeiten: Das internationale Festival für Animationsfilm findet ab jetzt jährlich statt.

Auch inhaltlich gibt es einige Veränderungen: Von nun an bleibt die Qual der Wahl zwischen «Internationalem Wettbewerb» und «World Wide Hits» erspart. Denn der Wettbewerb öffnet sich neu auch für die Filme der wegfallenden Kategorie «World Wide Hits» und wird damit zu einem Konzentrat weltbester klassischer Autorenfilme und kompromisslosen visionären Filmschaffens. Dem Schweizer Animationsfilmschaffen wird ein eigener Wettbewerb mit Jury- und Publikumspreis gewidmet. Und auch die Kleinen und Kleinsten unter den Trickfilmfans dürfen zum ersten Mal ihre Favoriten aus der Programmsparte «Neue Filme für Kinder» bestimmen.

Ansonsten bleibt vieles beim Altbewährten: die abendfüllenden Animationsfilme, ein «Thematischer Schwerpunkt», der sich heuer mit unseren künstlich generierten Artgenossen befasst, afrikanische Geschichten, Farben und Rhythmen im «Terra Incognita»-Programm, Blicke hinter die Kulissen in den «Coming Soon»-Präsentationen, Ausstellungen, Vorträge, Diskussionsrunden und zum Entspannen das Festivalzentrum im Merker-Areal an neuer Lage. Darüber hinaus geht es 2009 besonders spielerisch zu und her: Mit Filmprogrammen, Vorträgen und eigenen Fantoche-Spielen nehmen wir die Schnittstelle zwischen Game Design und Animationsfilm unter die Lupe.

Die folgenden Seiten verschaffen einen detaillierten Überblick über das diesjährige Fantoche.

Das Fantoche-Team

Six days, five cinemas and several hundred animated short and feature length films from all over the world. This can only be found nowhere else in Switzerland but Baden and it is called Fantoche. Our seventh round is about to begin and we have some good news. The international festival for animated films will now take place annually.

In terms of content, there are also a few changes. From now on, we will be spared the agony of choosing between the “International Competition” and “World Wide Hits”. This is be­ cause the competition is now also open for films in what was the “World Wide Hits” category, thereby becoming a concentration of the world’s best classic auteur films and uncompromis­ ing visionary filmmaking. Swiss animated film production will have its own competition with a jury and an audience prize being awarded. For the first time the younger cartoon fans can also vote for their favourites from the category “New Films for Children”.

Otherwise, much remains the same. There will be animated feature length films, a key theme that this year focuses on artificially generated humanity, African stories, colours and rhythms in the “Terra Incognita” programme, a look behind the scenes in the “Coming Soon” presentations, exhibitions, talks and rounds of discussion. For relaxation, there is the festival center at its new location in Merker-Areal. Beyond that, in 2009 the approach is particularly hands-on. With film programmes, talks and Fantoche’s own games, we will look closely at the interface between game design and animated film.

Im «Internationalen Wettbewerb» sucht Fantoche weltweit nach den besten animierten Kurzfilmen. Fantoche spürt die aktuellen Tendenzen auf, macht sich auf die Suche nach künstlerisch gewagten Ideen, unkonventionellen Ansätzen, nach Filmen, welche die Ausdrucksmittel der Animation weitertreiben und nach international preisgekrönten Hits. In the “International Competition”, Fantoche searches worldwide for the best animated short films. Fantoche seeks out the current trends, searches for artistically daring ideas, unconventional approaches, films that push animation further as a means of expression and for international award-winning hits. The colourful world of animation is lively, creative and diverse. New technologies have not suppressed this classic craft, but rather they have had quite the opposite effect. Domestic cartoon production is flourishing.

The number of productions is constantly growing and the increase is quite remarkable when compared with the rest of the world.

It includes everything, from traditional cartoons to the most diverse kinds of stop motion animation, digitally animated 3D scenarios, abstract studies in themes and motifs and music videos. It also includes animated film essays and elaborate stories.

In fact, there is a bit of everything – so much so that it wouldn’t all fit even into two festival programmes. Only the best of the best have made it into the final stages.

Das einheimische Trickfilmschaffen gedeiht prächtig: Die Zahl der Produktionen steigt stetig und nimmt sich im internationalen Vergleich recht bemerkenswert aus. Vom traditionellen Zeichentrick über unterschiedlichste Arten der Stop-Motion-Animation bis hin zu digital animierten 3D-Szenarien, von der abstrakten Formstudie über das Musikvideo bis hin zu animierten Filmessays oder aufwändigen Erzählungen – es gibt alles und von allem mehr, als zwei Festivalprogramme fassen könnten. Es lässt sie vortanzen, die hybriden Schöpfungen der künstlerischen Fantasie, und fragt nach, weshalb wir uns mit ihnen artverwandt fühlen. Wir sehen Ge­genstände, Maschinen, einzelne Körper­teile und Tiere, die frappante menschliche Züge aufweisen, uns parodieren oder unser Mitgefühl wecken. Und wir werden dem Unbe­hagen ausgesetzt, das uns befällt, wenn die Darstellung des Menschen durch Überzeichnung oder nahezu perfekte Nachbildung zur Miss­ bildung und zum Body Horror wird. Das fünfteilige Filmprogramm ist gleichsam eine Hommage an die fantastische Kraft des Animationsfilms, an seine wundersame Fähigkeit zu berühren und zu bewegen.

Animated film creates everything artificially, including people. There are no limits to its creativity and everything is possible, from rudimentary stick men, wondrous fantasy characters to lifelike computer simulations.

Fantoche takes a close look at synthetically generated humanity and presents it in all its diversity. It lets the hybrid creations of artistic fantasy parade before us and we’ll be asking why we feel a certain kinship with them. We see objects, machines, individual body parts and animals, that possess as­­ton­ is­hingly human features, parody us or awake our sympathy and we become exposed to the unease, which seizes us when the depiction of humans turns into body horror through caricature or almost perfect imitation. The five-part film programme pays homage to the imaginative power of animated film and its wondrous ability to touch and to move.

Die Verwandtschaft von Computerspielen und Animationsfilm ist offensichtlich: Ihr ge­ meinsames Instrument ist die Animation, ihre gemeinsame Stärke das Generieren von künstlichen Welten.

In einem ersten Schritt nähert sich Fantoche der Gamekultur an, indem es ihre Schnittstellen mit dem Animationsfilm beleuchtet.

Im Fokus des Interesses stehen dabei ihre wechselseitige Beeinflussung, ihre gestalte­ rische Verwandtschaft, die technischen Bedingungen des Game Design und seine Innovationen.

Their shared tool is animation, their shared strength is the creation of artificial worlds. In a first step, Fantoche will be getting to grips with the gaming

PLAYFUL REFLECTIONS Computerspiele haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu einem wirtschaftlich bedeuten­ den Zweig der Unterhaltungsbranche ent­ wickelt. Sie sind zu einem festen Bestandteil unserer Alltagskultur geworden und prägen diese auf unübersehbare Weise. Auch im Animationsfilmschaffen sind die Spuren des Computerspiels zu finden. Diese reichen weit über die gängige «Game zum Film»- und «Film zum Game»-Praxis der grossen Studios hinaus. Der unabhängige Animationsfilm geht viel subtiler mit seinem neuen Bruder um, nimmt dessen Einfluss auf kreative Weise, zuweilen reflektierend und oftmals augenzwinkernd auf.

In recent decades computer games have developed into an economically significant branch of the entertainment sector. They have become a permanent part of our everyday culture and influence it in a highly visible way. Traces of computer games can also be found in animated film production.

These extend far beyond the popular “game to film” and “film to game” practices of the large studios. Independent animated film deals with its new brother more subtly, taking his influence in a creative way, occa­ sionally reflectively and often winking.

MACHINIMA – ANIMATION MIT COMPUTERSPIELEN MACHINIMA – ANIMATION WITH COMPUTER GAMES «Machinima» sind Animationsfilme, die aus Computerspielen kreiert werden. Ihre Arbeitsgrundlage ist die Game-Software, Spielwelten dienen als Filmszenerien und Avatare werden zu Schauspielern. Entwickelt wird von A-Z alles im Computer. Aus einem Ego-Shooter wird ein sozialkritischer Film über Rassismus, aus einem Jump ’n’ Run-Spiel ein fantastischer Musikclip.

Die «Machinima»-Spielwiese ist riesig und zu entdecken gibt es für Filmbegeisterte vieles. Diese meist unkonventionellen Arbeiten sind vorwiegend im Internet zu finden. Fantoche bringt sie auf die Leinwand, blickt zurück auf die Highlights der «Machinima» und erläutert ihre Entstehungsgeschichten.

“Machinima” are animated films which are created from computer games. The basis of their work is the game software, themed areas serve as film scenes and avatars become actors. Everything is developed by compu­ters. A first-person shooter becomes a sociocritical film about racism, a platform game becomes a fantastic music video.

The “Machinima” playing field is gigantic and there is much to discover for film enthusiasts.

The most unconventional works are pre­ dominantly found on the Internet. Fantoche projects them onto the screen, looks back at the highlights of “Machinima” and tells the stories of their creation.

Unerklärliche Geräusche im nächtlichen Schlafzimmer. Grosse hechelnde Hunde mit gefletschten Zähnen an straff gespannten Leinen. Klauen eines Insekts, die sich durch nackte Haut bohren. Eine lange, spitze Medizinalnadel, die sich ganz langsam den Augen nähert. Geschichten, wie sie nur die Furcht zu schreiben vermag, werden in «Peur(s) du noir» von sechs weltbekannten Comiczeichnern und Grafikdesignern zu einer filmischen Collage verbunden. Initiiert und produziert von der französischen Kreativ­ agentur Prima Linea, ist dieser Langfilm eine Ausnahmeerscheinung unter seinesgleichen.

Unexplainable noises are heard in the bedroom every night, large panting dogs with bared teeth on taut leads, the theft of an insect, which gauges into naked skin, a long, sharp surgical needle which slowly advances towards the eyes. In “Peur(s) du noir”, stories, which can only be written in terror, are made into a cinematographic collage by six world-renowned cartoonists and graphic designers. Initiated and produced by the French creative agency Prima Linea this feature film is one of a kind.

This is how a lonely girl from Melbourne begins her letter to a randomly chosen address in the New York telephone directory. The recipient, a grumpy 44-year-old with Aspergers syndrome, writes back. The strange pair stays connected to each other for 20 years in a happy yet tragic pen friendship. The worldwide success of Elliott’s short films was crowned by his winning an Oscar in 1994 for “Harvie Krumpet”. The excellent narrator adds to his success with his first animated feature length film.

The feature film “Panique au village” was introduced at Fantoche 07 in the programme section “Coming Soon”. It is a continuation of the Belgian cult TV series of the same name.

Cowboy und Indien sind Langschläfer und hätten fast Chevals (ja, ein Pferd!) Geburtstag vergessen. Dabei teilen sie schon seit Jahren den Haushalt. Ein neuer Grillplatz soll’s richten, doch die eiligst bestellte Backsteinlieferung läuft aus dem Ruder. Ihr Wohnhaus wird unter Backsteinen begraben, sodass Cheval die Klavierlektionen bei der rothaa­ rigen Stute kippen muss, um beim Wiederaufbau Hand (äh – Huf) anzulegen. In der Welt von Cowboy, Indien und Cheval bleibt nun kein Stein mehr auf dem anderen. Da soll noch einer behaupten, auf dem Dorf sei nichts los! Der Langfilm «Panique au village» wurde am Fantoche 2007 in der Programmsektion «Coming Soon» vorgestellt und ist eine Weiterführung der gleichnamigen belgischen TV-Kultserie.

Brendan grows up at his uncle’s, the Abbot of Kells. A huge adventure starts for Brendan when Brother Aidon, a famous rationalist, takes shelter with them. Against his uncle’s instructions, he helps Aidon in the writing of a secret book and overcomes his fear of the mysterious forbidden forest outside the abbey walls. When the Vikings reach the abbey, Brendan has only one goal – to rescue the book. In their first feature length film, Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey succeed in combining impressive elements of fantasy with the history of Ireland and its mysticism. The characters and settings are lovingly produced and transport us to a time long gone.

While he is waiting for his order, Dave crosses paths with his neighbours, who like him are occupied with everyday worries and vital questions. They are an old, lonely man who one day takes in a grief-stricken angel, a young boy who is bringing up his piggy bank and a young man who drowns his lover’s grief by drinking with his three smallest companions. “$9.99” is based on a short story by Etgar Keret, one of the most highly regarded Israeli authors. The director Tatia Rosenthal has created a fascinating and original stop motion film for adults.

Die temporeiche Komödie aus der franzö­ sischen Hip Hop-Community ist ein Phänomen. Bei aller Streetcredibility und seinem Drive brilliert «Lascars» vor allem durch Humor: Der Sprachwitz blüht, das Szenengehabe wird treffend karikiert, die Figuren und das Dekor sitzen bis ins Detail, erstklassiger Rap inbegriffen.

When hanging out, the cool boys from the city normally get on quite well, but this summer they really work up a sweat.

With all its street cred and drive, “Lascars” brilliance lies mainly in its humour. Linguistic jokes blossom, the attitude of the scene is aptly caricatured, the characters and the décor are accurate to the finest detail and first-class rap is included.

NEUE FILME FÜR KINDER NEW FILMS FOR CHILDREN Für die Kleinen und Kleinsten unter den Trickfilmfans gibt es dieses Jahr nicht nur zwei Programme mit neuesten animierten Kurzfilmen wie bis anhin. Dieses Jahr dürfen sie zum ersten Mal auch ihren Lieblingsfilm bestimmen. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kinderfilmclub «Die Zauberlaterne» stellt Fantoche eine sechsköpfige Kinderjury und organisiert eine Publikumsabstimmung, an der jedes Kind teilnehmen darf. Es gibt wieder viel Lustiges, Spannendes und Fantasievolles zu entdecken!

For young and even younger cartoon fans there is more than just the two programmes with the latest animated short films, as in previous years. For the first time, they will also be able to vote for their favourite film.

In cooperation with the children’s film club “Die Zauberlaterne” (The Magic Lantern) Fantoche will form a jury made up of six children and is organising an audience vote in which every child is allowed to take part.

Once again, there will be a lot of fun, ex­ citement and plenty to get the imagination going.

KIDS FOR KIDS Auch dieses Jahr bietet Fantoche dem Animationsfilmnachwuchs eine Plattform. Spielerisch werden Kinder und Jugendliche in die Geheimnisse des Animationsfilms eingeführt und präsentieren ihre Erstlingswerke, die sie in Fantoche Trickfilm-Workshops unter der Leitung von Filmemacherin Anka Schmid hergestellt haben.

Children and youths are introduced to the secrets of animated film in a hands-on way and present their first works, which have been produced in Fantoche cartoon workshops under the leadership of film producer Anka Schmid.

TAW, VIBORG TAW (The Animation Workshop) ist eine 20-jährige Animationsschule mitten in Viborg, Dänemark. Erst kürzlich wurde sie einer Umstrukturierung unterzogen und gliedert sich seit Februar 2009 neu in sieben unterschiedliche aber miteinander ver­ bundene Abteilungen. Diese umfassen unter anderem die Bereiche Animationsfilm, Character Animation, CG Artist und Computerspiel. Die Studenten absolvieren zudem Praktika in Firmen auf der ganzen Welt und arbeiten in enger Partnerschaft mit der National Danish Film School und der Animationsfilmschule La Poudrière in Frankreich.

TAW (The Animation Workshop) is a 20-yearold animation school located in the center of Viborg, Denmark. TAW recently underwent an intense period of development and since February 2009 has been composed of seven distinct yet vibrantly interconnected de­ partments. They consist among others of animation film, character animation, CG artist and computer gaming. The students undertake internships with companies throughout the world and work in close collaboration with the National Danish Film School and La Poudrière, an animation film school in France.

MOME, BUDAPEST Seit über 135 Jahren ist MOME (MoholyNagy University of Art and Design) in der ungarischen akademischen Landschaft führend. Sowohl traditionelle Animationstechniken als auch in den Neuen Medien angewandte Methoden spielen dabei eine wichtige Rolle. Das fünfjährige Animationsausbildungsprogramm wird in Kürze aus­ laufen, parallel dazu bietet MOME seit Herbst 2007 einen dreijährigen BachelorStudiengang an, der 2010 um einen Masterstudiengang ergänzt werden wird.

For over 135 years, MOME (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design) has been a leading institution in Hungarian academic art education. Traditional animation techniques and animation methods applied in new media both play an important role in MOME’s educational programmes. The present five-year animation programme is being phased out, but parallel to it MOME has been offering a three-year Bachelor of Arts degree course since autumn 2007, which will be extended to a master programme in animation education by 2010.

TERRA INCOGNITA: AFRIKA Das Animationsfilmschaffen Afrikas floriert und ist überaus vielfältig und kreativ: Bis 2006 umfasste es über 1000 Kurz- und Langfilme sowie Fernsehserien. Die fan­ tastische Welt der afrikanischen Erzählungen und Legenden, die Einzigartigkeit der Ge­ staltung sowie die Verbindung von Stoff und Zeichnung, die zeichnerischen Feuerwerke und die Plastizität der Marionetten machen den Charme des afrikanischen Animationsschaffens aus und verzaubern sein Publikum.

Fantoche zeigt Filme aus Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal und Côte d’Ivoire und lädt zur Entdeckung dieses animierten Afrikas ein.

Caroline Leaf’s films are impressive works of art. Created using simple methods, they are either drawn on glass with sand, finger paints or gouache or they are scratched directly onto the reel of film. Born in Seattle (USA) in 1946, Caroline Leaf started to make animated films when she was a student in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “The Street” (1976), an adaptation of a book, got universal recognition and an Oscar nomination.

With “Two Sisters” she succeeded in creating another cinematographic masterpiece in 1990, which brought her both prizes and honour. Caroline Leaf’s film works are marked out by her extraordinary appreciation of stories, lyricism and human destiny.

Each of her works is an expression of cre­ ative perfection and unique style.

Copenhagen Bombay is the studio of producer Sarita Christensen and the Danish film producer Anders Morgenthaler. His feature film debut “Princess” was shown at Fantoche 07. The studio specialises in the development of good entertainment for children and youths, whether in the form of short or feature length films, whether for cinema, TV, computer games or Internet platforms. Their animated children’s feature film “The Apple and the Worm” is about to be released and will be presented at Fantoche alongside other projects from the go-getting studio by Sarita Christensen.

Sehen wir die Konsequenzen unseres Handelns: das Ausbreiten der Siedlungen, die Zunahme des Verkehrs und das Sinken der Lebensqualität in den Agglomerationen? Solchen und ähnlichen Fragen will der Kanton Aargau in einem interaktiven Multimedia-Projekt auf den Grund gehen und der interessierten Bevölkerung die Zusammenhänge zwischen menschlichem Wirken und Raumplanung aufzeigen. Das «Coming Soon» am Fantoche bietet Hintergrundinformationen zur Entwicklung dieses ausserordentlichen Internetportals, von der Ideenfindung bis hin zur Produktion.

We all leave our mark on the area in which we live, but are we always aware of it? Do we see the consequences of our actions, the spread of settlements, the increase in traffic, and the reduction of quality of life in the agglomerations? The Canton of Aargau wants to get to the bottom of these and similar questions through an interactive multimedia project. They also want to demonstrate, to those who are interested, the links between human activity and development planning.

MOLLY MONSTER Der Animationsfilmemacher Ted Sieger hat gerade mit der Produktion der zweiten TV-Serie von «Molly Monster» begonnen.

Das Monster und sein bester Freund Edison werden schon bald nicht nur die Kinder in der Schweiz sondern auch in Deutschland und Skandinavien verzücken. Aus erster Hand lernen wir Details zu den Produktionsbedingungen und Arbeitsschritten kennen und erfahren, unter welchen Umständen die Animationsfilmserie in der Schweiz entsteht.

Animation filmmaker Ted Sieger has started to work on producing the second series of TV’s “Molly Monster”. The monster and her best friend Edison will soon be delighting children not just in Switzerland, but in Germany and Scandinavia too. We will be introduced first-hand to some of the details of the production conditions and the stages involved, and finding out just how an ani­ mated film series is brought to the screen in Switzerland.

After “Persepolis” and “Waltz with Bashir”, “Metropia” is another promising animated feature length film from the world of independ­ ent filmmakers that stands at the forefront of the international film landscape. The Swedish producer, Tarik Saleh, with a background in political documentaries, has made an am­bitious science fiction film, which at the same time is a realistic portrait of our so­ciety. The film promises to be stunning, both aesthetically and in terms of atmosphere.

At Fantoche just prior to the release date, we will be able to find out more about how the film was created, the technology used and we’ll be able to appraise the first film clips.

Das Festival legt grossen Wert auf Austausch und Diskussionen, die weiterführende Fragestellungen behandeln und Einblicke in die Praxis bieten. In den moderierten «Meet the Artists»-Gesprächen stellen sich die kreativen Köpfe des «Internationalen Wett­ bewerbs» und des am diesjährigen Fantoche erstmals lancierten «Schweizer Wettbewerbs» den Fragen der Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauer.

MAKING-OF: 3D CHARACTER MODELLING PIXAR, ANDREW H. SCHMIDT Building Character: the Russell Diet Andrew H. Schmidt ist ein Pixar-Mensch der ersten Stunde. Als einer der gefragtesten Character Modeller des Erfolgsstudios war er an Produktionen wie «Toy Story», «Monsters Inc.» oder «Finding Nemo» beteiligt und kann auf jahrelange Erfahrung zurückblicken.

Für «Up», den neusten Geniestreich Pixars, hat er den Pfadfinderjungen Russell erschaffen, der sich mit vollgepacktem Rucksack auf ein Abenteuer hoch in den Lüften begibt.

Andrew H. Schmidt has been a Pixar man since the very beginning. He was involved in productions like “Toy Story”, “Monsters Inc.” and “Finding Nemo”, and is one of the successful studio’s most sought-after character modellers, he can look back at years of experience. For “Up”, Pixar’s latest stroke of genius, he has created Russell, the boy scout, who sets out on an adventure high in the skies with a fully packed rucksack. At Fantoche, we will find out how the cuddly character Russell came into being and where the secret of Pixar’s character creations lies. We will also find out what awaits us in the “Russell Diet”.

Der gebürtige Russe ist ein Meister der Puppenanimation. Für Fantoche öffnet er seine Zauberkiste und erklärt das Handwerk und die Geheimnisse des StopMotion-Filmverfahrens. Er holt die Puppen von der Leinwand in den Kinosaal, zeigt

Pjotr Sapegin is a magician of a unique kind: his materials are made of plaster, wood or Plasticine, which he shapes into figures into which he breathes life with the help of a camera. The Russian by birth is the a master of puppet animation. He will be opening his box of tricks for Fantoche and will explain his craft and the secrets of the stop motion film process. He will bring the puppets from the screen into the cinema, show us their inner life, their skeletons and their mechanisms and demonstrate how he brings them to life.

Darüber hinaus wirft er einen kritischen Blick auf die Entwicklung der Game-Industrie.

GameArt hingegen provoziert als Kunstform mit Animation, Story, Sound, Spielmechanik und Interaktion ein Nachdenken über elektronische Spiele. Der österreichische Medienkünstler Max Moswitzer entführt auf eine Tour d’horizon dieses faszinierenden Genres und stellt Arbeiten wie «Painstation» vor, bei denen Spieler mit leichten Stromschlägen für Fehler bestraft werden, oder «Space-Invaders», in dem aufzementierte Spielfiguren reale Städte einzunehmen versuchen.

The history of computer games already goes back more than 40 years. A machine which can do everything has been developed from a box with a few switching circuits. Ulrich Götz, Director of the Game Design graduate school programme at the Zurich University of the Arts, gives an overview of the creative vocabulary of computer games and the changes that have occurred since their creation. In addition, he analyses the deve­ lopment of the game industry.

Electronic games should be entertaining and fun. GameArt on the other hand provokes reflection on electronic games as an art form, with animation, story, sound, game mechanics and interaction being considered. The Austrian media artist Max Moswitzer takes off on a tour d’horizon of this fascinating genre and introduces works like “Painstation”, in which players are punished for mistakes with light electric shocks, or “Space-Invaders” in which stuck-on characters try to capture real cities.

René Bauer, Dozent und unabhängiger Spielentwickler, bietet Ein­ blicke in die Systematik von Computer­ spielen, erklärt die Möglichkeiten von Simulationen und zeigt auf, was ein Spiel erfüllen muss, damit ein Spieler dazu ermutigt wird, eine künstlich generierte Spielwelt zu erforschen und neue Erfahrungen zu machen.

Why is it that humans enjoy playing? And what is it that currently makes computer games so popular? It’s playtime – time for self-experimentation!

The Game Design study programme at the Zurich University for the Arts (ZHdK) has been offering a wide education in story­ telling, 3D visualisation, audio design, game mechanics and game programming since 2004. Their students have created Fantoche games for Fantoche 09. The festival’s char­ acteristic pair of eyes served as a guide for the projects. The games celebrate their first appearance in their own playhouse. The Fantoche audience is the guinea pig. We invite you most heartily to try it.

SIX FREAKS UNDER Ein Roboter-Musiktheater von RozzoBianca A Robotic Music Theatre by RozzoBianca «Six Freaks Under» ist ein Musiktheater der ganz besonderen Art: Schauspieler, Musiker und Sänger sind lebensgrosse Roboter, Puppen und Objekte. Aus Recyclingmaterialien und Industrieschrott hergestellt, per Computer oder zum Teil von Hand gesteuert, spielt diese verrückte Roboterband ihre Musik live auf richtigen Instrumenten. Als Bühne dient ein zweistöckiger Lastwagen­ anhänger des Berner Duos RozzoBianca.

“Six Freaks Under” is a unique music theatre. Life-sized robots, puppets and objects are actors, musicians and singers. A two-storey lorry trailer from RozzoBianca, the duo from Berne, serves as a stage. It is wonderfully bizarre, funny and unique!
