HIRSCH’S – A NAME SYNONYMOUS WITH HELPING ONE SMALL COMMUNITY AT A TIME

Johannesburg School For The Blind

Margaret has been involved with the Johannesburg School for the Blind and Children with Disabilities for many years, buying a suitable building to house the school and finding any opportunity to help supply them with much needed equipment.

There is no other specialised primary school in the greater Johannesburg area – teaching from Grades R to 7 – for blind children or those with poor vision, with or without other disabilities. The school follows the national curriculum, but tailors the programme to each specific child.

“These children are amazing and so talented in their own right. There are children who are the most beautiful painters even though they cannot see. They are such an inspiration,” says Margaret.

Year-end Feast For Uitkoms Girls

At the end of last year, Margaret and a team from Hirsch’s and Defy put together a magnificent Kitchen Capers feast, then at the end of the cooking session, they headed off to the Uitkoms Home for Girls in Observatory, Johannesburg to give them a surprise Christmas feast.

The school provides residential care and protection, education, professional therapy, life skills training, recreational programmes and spiritual support for the girls. They are staffed by a qualified and dedicated team of six. Uitkoms, and the entire welfare sector, have an ongoing battle making ends meet.

Ingcebo Educare Centre

The last 12 months have been particularly trying for many small communities who rely on donations and handouts from the public. Hirsch’s has helped out in any way they can, and one of the projects Margaret has taken under her wing includes the Ingcebo Educare Centre in Isipingo.

Sneh Ntshutsha set up the centre several years ago as a place of hope and refuge for vulnerable children and orphans in the area. Margaret has helped kit the centre out with fridges, freezers, mattresses, kitchen essentials and school supplies, and even sends groceries on a monthly basis.

The centre recently had to relocate due to unforeseen circumstances and the local community helped to get them back on track. Margaret and a team from Hirsch’s visited the centre in December, laden with goodie bags for the children, some donated by The Robin Foundation.

Sneh is appealing to anyone in the community for help. If you would like to donate any items, from food to furniture, new and second-hand items, please email shane@hirschs.co.za and you can drop them off at a Hirsch’s branch near you. H
