2012 Annual Report Thank you for a robust year of strengthening our community members.

Dear FamilyWorks Supporter:

2012 was another successful year for FamilyWorks, as we continued to focus on providing support and services that help community members throughout our neighborhood improve the well-being and resiliency needed to support their families. Whether through nutritional support or family programs, FamilyWorks remains dedicated to the idea that together as a community we can help all families thrive.

The last few years have been challenging ones for many people, and the need for FamilyWorks’ services continues to grow and evolve. For many families, just a little extra help from the food bank is all they need to ensure that their children have healthy food and they can stretch their budget to pay necessary bills. For others, building community through playgroups provides their children opportunities to develop, grow and be ready to succeed in kindergarten. A wide variety of classes help parents develop and share skills to best support their children and each other through every stage of development. FamilyWorks provides a welcoming place where families can turn to find the resources they need.

Thanks to our generous volunteers, FamilyWorks saw many new developments this year: we created a new website to better serve our community, expanded our space in our existing building, made a short movie that tells the story of our clients, and extended evening hours for the food bank on Thursdays to better serve the needs of our customers.

These efforts reflect the very best of our community – one that supports the families in our neighborhood generously, respectfully, and without hesitation. They also help us concentrate our financial resources – only 8% of our expenses go to overhead – so that the contributions of others most directly benefit our clients.

The Food Bank:

340 tons of nutritious food were distributed and delivered to 3212 individuals in need. That translates to over 33,000 food bank visits & deliveries of groceries! We are indebted to the many organizations, individuals and groups that donate food and supplies to our program and the hundreds of volunteers who dig in and volunteer their hard work.

The Resource Center:

Over 50 partnerships help to enrich a diverse set of programs at the resource center to make it a place where people can connect to needed resources, information and community, including: Teen Parent Program • Single Parent Program • Parent/Child Playgroups in three languages • Employment Advice • individual/family advocacy • Life skills classes, such as cooking, financial literacy and CPR • Computer tutoring • Parenting Classes • Family Activities • WIC Nutrition program

social support networks and parenting skills, helping them achieve greater connection to their communities and increasing their awareness of the importance of engaging in activities that promote early learning.

Over 1500 people attended family center programs. All programs are free of charge.

We also gave away over 2000 bus tickets, thousands of diapers and kids clothing, toys and books. Our partnership with WIC (Women Infant Child Public Health Program) provided supplemental nutrition assistance to 136 individuals (64 children) at our site.
