Major Roberts, Site Director, BASCOL

How did it feel to be named BASCOL’s 2025 Employee of the Year?

It was an unexpected surprise. I was honored to be chosen, and it was a very humbling experience. I work with a bunch of great people whom I was expecting to be picked.

What drew you to a career in education, particularly in before-and after-school care?

Having three sons of my own involved in youth sports, I have been coaching and already working with kids for many years. After having been laid off from the New York State Thruway as a toll collector, I was advised that BASCOL was hiring, and it felt like the right fit.

What is a typical day like as the site director at Soule Road Elementary School?

As site director of Soule Road Elementary I typically start my afternoon arriving at 2:30 p.m. and getting set up for the day. This involves setting out toys, games, and arts and crafts activities. The kids arrive around 3:40 p.m., where they are greeted, 2 3 1 4

followed by a meeting to set the expectations for the day. Then they are offered a snack for the afternoon, followed by a craft. Depending on the weather, the kids will then have gym time or outdoor play. Finally, the kids will just hang out and play games until they are picked up by their parents.

What is your favorite part of your role?

The interactions with the kids, seeing their smiles, and watching them grow throughout the year!

Sky Zone Clay Celebrates One Year at Its New Location

Are you looking for an activity the whole family can enjoy?

Sky Zone Clay recently celebrated its first year at its new location — and there’s more to do there than ever before.

“As part of our move, we took the opportunity to install the latest and greatest attractions,” said Marketing Manager Bekkah Frisch. “We’re much more than just trampolines; the park also includes a 65-foot zip line, two iWall Augmented Reality (AR) gaming systems, two 16-foot Mega Launch Slides, two state-of-the-art Air Courts, and other unique attractions. We never stop looking for new ways to play, either. That’s why, come fall, we’re debuting a brand-new floor-to-ceiling, self-enclosed toddler attraction.”

But Sky Zone isn’t only for kids.

“Guests of all ages can benefit from ex-

ercising (and playing!) on our trampolines and other attractions, in particular our Air Courts,” said Frisch. “For those who are unfamiliar, the Air Court is a springy, airfilled basketball court that takes basketball and soccer to a whole new level, while being much easier on the knees than a regular basketball court.”

There are two things you’ll need before joining the fun: a waiver (you can fill it out online ahead of time) and a pair of SkySocks (they have Sky Zone’s “trademark grip on the bottom,” and can be worn again during a future visit).

“At our park, we prioritize a safe, clean, family-friendly environment that welcomes everyone and caters to guests of all ages,” said Frisch. “We regularly offer Homeschool Hop, various sensory-friendly programs, SkyCamp summer camps, Little Leapers, and more based on our guests’ priorities.”

If You Go SKY ZONE CLAY

Where: 4155 NY-31, Clay.

Hours: Sunday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-10 p.m.

TRY THIS!

In advance of the activity, freeze the small toys in ice cubes.

You can also have just as much fun doing this activity with regular ice!

Set out all the tools and materials within reach of your child. Give them the ice cube and allow the learner to investigate. Ask guiding questions like:

• What do you feel?

• What do you think the dropper does?

• What can you use the spoon for?

Encourage your child to melt the ice cube and “rescue” the toy. If they need direction, ask questions like:

• Do you think the salt will change the ice? How can we find out?

• Can you move the water with the dropper?

Parallel play! Work on your own ice cube alongside your child and let them see how you approach the problem.

While you may have an end goal for this activity, your child may end up focusing on tools or techniques like pouring liquid, using a dropper, or stirring the salt. Allow your child to set the pace and guide exploration.

Change It Up!

alongside your child and let them see how you

Depending on the age and need of your child, this activity may look different. This is an open-ended and sensory activity. There is no wrong way to use these tools:

Here are some activity extensions and adaptations:

• Use multiple cups and practice moving water around.

• Experiment with other substances like sugar, sand, or baking soda. Does this change how the ice melts?

• Add color to your ice and/or salt.

• Repetition is your friend!

Science Process Skills

SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS

This activity focuses on building the skills to participate in science over the science content itself. In this activity, we focus on skills like using tools and making observations as your child melts ice.

We observe objects and events using our senses. While observations made only with the senses are qualitative, they help us gather information and learn about the world. Building observation skills helps children expand on other science process skills like categorizing and making predictions. When guiding your child through this activity, continuously draw their attention to the materials as the ice melts or the salt dissolves. Prompt them to make observations about these changes.

Tools are considered technology, as a tool is an item that helps us complete a task. Using tools and technology is crucial to expanding our skills. Tools like droppers, scoopers, and tweezers allow children to experiment and problem-solve as they melt the ice. When guiding your child through this activity, try demonstrating how to use the tools through parallel play or hand over hand.

Thank you to the Sciencenter for sharing this activity! Find more at sciencenter.org/resources-home — and don’t miss the next activity in our August issue.

Don’t Spoil the Fun: Six Tips for a Safe Picnic

Apicnic is a relaxing way to share food and fellowship with friends and family, coworkers, a community group, or even just a quiet outing for a couple on a sunny afternoon. You can spend the day grilling, sharing your favorite dishes, and playing games. You might even bring the family dog. With all those good vibes, you would hate to ruin such a happy event with a foodborne illness, an accident, or too much of a good thing. Take a look at these picnic safety precautions to ensure your picnic will be the carefree event you imagined:

1. Don’t Invite Bacteria

Foodborne illness is the direct result of improper food handling. Wash hands and utensils properly with a jug of clean water and soap. Choose recipes that will do better in heat, like oil dressings vs. mayo dressings. Return items to the cooler as soon as you are done using them. Be sure to

pack your drinks in a separate cooler because every time you open the lid, you are increasing the temperature inside. Store coolers in a shady spot instead of returning them to the car or trunk, especially if you have perishable food inside.

2. Practice Grill Safety

If you are using a public grill, don’t forget to clean it first by burning off any leftover residue and scraping it with a grill brush. Don’t cross-contaminate by reusing the same platter for cooked meat that also carried the raw meat. When cooking, use a meat thermometer to ensure the meat is cooked to the proper temperature. Grilled food should not be out for longer than an hour before you refrigerate it. It is best to cook just what you need and discard the rest. When you are done cooking, make sure the coals are completely out before leaving the picnic area.

You can also make a chemical-free bug repellent using witch hazel and essential oils.

4. Enjoy the Sun in Moderation

We can all agree that a perfect picnic includes a sunny day, but we don’t want to overdo it. According to the Sun Safety Alliance, you can burn even on a cloudy day, so your picnic basket should include sunscreen. Children get three times the sun exposure as adults, so reapply after swimming or perspiring. Be sure to take a break from the sun in a shady spot and cool down. Hydration is also very important, so drink plenty of water. Not certain if you had enough? Visit camelbak.com for a great hydration calculator.

5. Pack a First Aid Kit

Accidents happen, so it is best to be prepared. Pack a first aid kit with ibuprofen for minor aches and pains, aloe for sunburn, Benadryl for minor allergies and bug bites, and bandages and antiseptic for cuts and scrapes. Other helpful items might include a blanket, paper towels, scissors, and plastic bags.

6. Keep Fur Babies Safe, Too

Many picnickers bring the whole family along, and that includes the dog. To keep them safe, double-check that they are up-to-date on their vaccines, including flea and tick prevention. Be certain they are wearing a collar that has current ID tags on it. Bring a leash to secure them in your campsite while you are nearby, but don’t leave them unattended, and please don’t leave them in the car. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water to drink, their own food, and a blanket or towel to lie down on in a shady spot when they get hot.

Coolers you should bring to (one for drinks, one for prepared foods, and one for raw meat).

30 SPF

The American Academy of Dermatology’s minimum recommendation for sunscreen on children (adults is 15).

1

Number of hours food can sit out before it should be tossed or properly refrigerated, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

40 degrees

Temperature cold food should be stored at to prevent bacteria growth.

48 million
