Clearwater Marine Aquarium offers educational camps throughout the summer. Campers will enjoy creative classroom activities and have fun learning about marine life in the aquarium and out on the water.

NEW FOR 2025!

More Choices for Second and Third Graders:

A specialized camp tailored to their age group, featuring engaging, age-appropriate activities focused on marine life and conservation.

Kindergarten through Third Grade Camp:

This is a great option for families with younger kids that want to attend camps together.

Middle School Campers have Two NEW Options!

Animal Care 101: Experience what it takes to care for the animals at Clearwater Marine Aquarium! Campers will explore the daily routines, diets, and medical needs of rescued patients and resident species.

Ecosystem Advocates:

A traveling camp with three field trips to explore different ecosystems, such as coastal mangroves and marine habitats.

Field Investigation Program for High Schoolers:

This brand-new program offers high schoolers an insider’s look at scientific research and conservation. Activities include hands-on research methods such as water sampling, species identification, and ecosystem analysis. This program is perfect for teens interested in pursuing careers in marine biology, environmental science or conservation.

So, kids who have made the commitment to one particular sport would have little time to play another seasonal sport.

The downside to that is the burnout factor. The worst possible outcome is a fourteen year old who has committed to a particular sport at say six years old, only to find out it’s not fun anymore.

Summer sports camps can give kids an opportunity, especially at a young age, to try out many different sports without making a long term commitment. So if you have an AAU travel baseball player, a FUN basketball camp for a week might be just the ticket.

Multi-Sports Camps are another great option.

These camps usually fall into the FUN category. Different sports are played each day or even within a single day. Basics of the game are taught and then the kids can be broken up into age and skill appropriate groups to play games. For young kids who have no real favorite sport, this can be a great opportunity to find out what they really like.

But, either way, remember, the summer should be fun and the sports camp should also be fun. Whether the goal is to develop skills to reach the next level of a specific sport or just to kick the ball around and meet new friends, be sure to match up the right kid with the right camp and the coming school year will be filled with positive memories of an awesome summer!

When I was a kid, summer vacation meant playing pick up games in the neighborhood and field trips meant going to the beach. We didn’t have all these structured camps and daily activities that they have today. We went out in the morning and came back before it was dark.

Don’t get me wrong, structure for kids is a great thing, but having free time to figure out how to have fun with your friends is also a good thing. But, regardless of what era we are in, one thing about summer remains constant, kids and their families go to the beach. Especially here in Florida where there is an abundance of sandy beaches.

SENIOR MUSINGS

Speaking of the beach, I have always loved the beach and have always been drawn to the water. Many other activities that I’ve tried have always confirmed that notion.

I like playing golf, and I do love the beautiful grounds of the golf course, and I do truly love being outside. It is absolutely a great feeling when I hit a shot just right (which I am pained to say is not very often). But the draw to the water is evident every time I send a shot cascading into a water hazard.

The sandy beaches of the Pinellas shore line apparently are on my mind every time I hook a nine iron into a sand trap. So, summer is coming and for me, it’s best to cut out the middle man and put my nine iron in my beach bag. I bet it works great as an umbrella stand.

HOMESICK? What U Can Do

Each summer, many children will have to deal with feeling homesick if part of their summer involves sleep-over camp, but parents can play a big role in helping their children overcome homesickness, say psychologists.

Talking with children about a wide range of ways to cope with homesickness before camp starts is a first step,” said psychologists Kristen Thurber, PhD., and John R. Weisz, PhD., of the University of California in Los Angeles who have studied how children cope with their first time camp experience. Parents can help their children understand that feeling homesick is very natural and that physical activity and making new friends will help distract them from the sad and nervous emotions that are part of homesickness.

Parents should also encourage their children not to give up in situations where they may

feel overwhelmed and lonely, instead offering suggestions of ways children can make themselves feel better.

Before children go to overnight camps, they should practice shorter separations to learn which coping methods work for them. Dr. Thurber suggests parents can help their children understand which aspects of the separation they can control (like letter writing, participation in activities) and which aspects they cannot control (like duration of the separation, routines of the new environment).

According to Dr. Thurber, the least homesick children are those who change what they can about the separation and adjust to what they can’t, and that takes practice.

A profile of coping methods that children report are effective in dealing with homesickness include engaging in distracting activities and seeking social

support from friends or counselors. Research shows that children who engage in these types of activities were less homesick than those who felt helpless about coping.

Research shows that doing something fun to forget about homesickness, thinking positively, changing feelings to be happy and reframing time are the most common ways that boys and girls coped with their homesickness. Girls also seek social support from friends and counselors more often than the boys.

Research also shows that older children are less homesick than younger children, perhaps because older children have generally had more experience away from home, and therefore have had more practice coping.
