welcome We have a September tradition in our family and this year will be no different. Every first day of the new term since they were 4 years old, my son and his friend have stood on our lawn and had their ‘first day’ photo taken.

Over the years my daughter has joined them and then my niece, but regardless of that, the pair photo remains the most poignant for me. This one will be their last as they are about to embark on their final year of school – Year 11– although I’m sure we will do a college one – and even a uni one!

What has fascinated me over the years has, obviously, been the physical changes. They start off more or less the same height, then for a while Isaac is tallest, then Charlotte, then it’s equal again. Then the teen boy growth spurt puts my son towering over his friend. There are always smiles, always hugs and smart ‘first day’ uniform, before the term ravages their shoes and the sleeves are rolled up to look cool.

But although the physical changes are the most obvious, it’s the people they have grown into that impresses me most. The photos don’t show how they have grown inside and the fine people they’ve become - all the years of walking to school together, dragging musical instruments behind them, performing in plays, sitting SATS, school trips, holidays together, sports days and preparing for impending GCSEs. The photos also don’t show that they did finally manage to learn to get out of bed, brush their teeth, find the laundry basket, get actual jobs and do things like cook and iron. If you’re worrying that your child will never do these things – they really will - in time.

All those milestones are well-documented in other photos, but somehow the passage of time each ‘September Picture’ shows, always captures the memories for me.

Start creating opportunities in East Riding Junction in Goole, East Riding has been chosen by leading arts education charity, Children & the Arts, to join its UK-wide Start arts programme.

Start, created by Children & the Arts, is a three-year engagement programme of arts activity between selected cultural organisations and local schools that tackles inequality by working only with the children who need it most, who are at risk of missing out on a creative and cultural education.

Dad to Yorkshire Olympians inspires Pupils The father of two-time Yorkshire Olympic triathletes Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee encouraged pupils at Harrogate independent prep school Belmont Grosvenor to ‘believe in yourselves’ and ‘take every opportunity that arises’ when he presented prizes at the school’s annual Speech Day. Dr Keith Brownlee, proud dad to the world-famous athletes, was guest of honour at the ‘outstanding’ co-educational school’s annual Prize Giving and Speech Day event, held in a marquee on the Head’s Lawn.

Speaking to pupils, staff, parents and invited guests, Dr Brownlee said he had consulted his two famous sons for advice to offer children at Belmont Grosvenor School and the boys had come up with a six-point plan which had helped them follow their dreams.

“Jonny and Alistair are just two ordinary boys, no different to any one of you, who went to a school very similar to this one, “ said Dr Brownlee.

Brownlee tips for success to Belmont Grosvenor School pupils included learning from early on that the harder you work at something, the more you get out of it, and understanding that life will be full of opportunities, but it is your responsibility to take them!

Dr Brownlee added; “There is nothing special about Olympic athletes, or famous actors, or musicians, or film stars – they are just like you or me, but they have the determination and confidence to fulfill their dreams,” he said.

Start has been running nationally for 10 years and has involved over 130,000 young people aged 4-16 years old. The programme is proven to raise the aspirations of young people, building confidence and helping with learning and development in school.

During the first year, children will make at least two visits to Junction, the first visit in September will be to see a hand shadow theatre performance. They will then work with the learning team at Junction in workshops to develop their critical skills and have fun creating their own artistic work, with plenty of opportunity to celebrate their achievements at the end of each year. Start also provides teachers with training for them to deliver the arts programme, helping pupils realise their full potential and making links to the curriculum.

Having children could improve your chances of living longer, a new study has found.

The research, from Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, used national registry data to analyse the mortality rates of nearly 1.5 million Swedes aged between 60 and 100. It found that those with children tended to live longer than those without.

The study also found that men benefited more from being parents than women when it came to longevity, despite the fact that women had a longer average lifespan overall.

At age 60 fathers had a life expectancy of a further 20.2 years, compared to 18.4 years for men without children. 60year old mothers could expect to live for another 24.6 years compared to 23.1 years for childless women.

Are your kids having too much salt?

Official guidelines have advised that children aged between 1 and 3 should have no more than 2g of salt per day.

According to new research by Kiddyum (of 2,000 parents of children aged 1-4), a staggering 84% of parents are not aware of how much salt their child should be having.

Meanwhile, 64% of parents also said that they trust food that’s marketed for children to be low in salt, but unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The research therefore highlighted the following shocking revelations: •

A portion of spaghetti hoops with two slices of toast can be 117% of a child’s daily amount of salt!

O ut of six prepared savoury meals for children, half of them contained one third of a child’s daily allowance of salt, while one contained 99% of the maximum serving of salt.

Misleading packaging Chloe Joyner, a Nutritionist for Kiddyum commented: “It’s really important that young children have a low salt diet and naturally it’s something a lot of parents are concerned about. But it can be tricky for parents to know if a food is high in salt or whether a product contains added salt because sometimes it is hidden in the ingredients, or labels and tables can be misleading.”

Clubs and classes are a great way to continue your child’s development, as well as allowing them to have fun, get exercise, socialise with others, and take part in activities they might not have the chance to at home. There are a huge range of different clubs and classes on offer, and while they may be better suited for some children better than others, all of them are designed to be fun and useful for developing vital skills for your children.

Here are just a few of the clubs and classes on offer, and some of the benefits they can bring. Take a look at the list to find out which ones are best suited for your little one.

Rugby

Rugby isn’t just for boys - it’s for girls too. Rugby is a great way for children to have fun and get exercise while learning to work and function as part of a team.

Your children can learn a wide variety of skills from the sport, including respect, winning and losing, and working together. All of these come together to make a great, enjoyable experience.

Drama

Drama is always hugely popular with children and really helps younger people release their creative thoughts and let their imagination run wild. Always fun and engaging, it’s also a great way to help children develop their own sense of self, confidence and self-esteem - even shy children love taking part. It can also be a great way to develop an interest in other forms of art.

Sports for ADHD

ADHD can make it difficult for some children to engage in organised activities and team sports. Not all sports are well suited to children with ADHD traits, and not all coaches and supervisors are understanding about the difficulties

Brownies

Joining the Brownies is a great way to get your child to experience the outdoors and engage and socialise with others. Studies have shown that scouting organisations help children with their mental health in later life, and with the huge range of activities on offer in Brownies, and great fun ways to learn, you’ll be sure to get your children off to a good start.

Cubs

The Cubs are a great way to keep restless young minds and bodies active as they learn about and participate in a huge variety of different activities. As well as learning skills, it’s also a great way to get your child to exercise and work with others.

Trampolining

Trampolining is always popular among children, but it’s also a great fun way to get exercise. Under supervision, and learning different moves on the trampoline, it can be the perfect way to get into gymnastics and other athletics too - as well as being healthy and fun in its own right.

Music

When children begin school, learning to read is one the most important things they will do and will also be a hot topic for discussion amongst parents in the playground.

Teachers alone cannot teach children to read. Children are likely to spend more time reading individually with their parents than teachers and so it is important that parents feel confident when helping their children learn to read.

The method of teaching reading changes over the years. The current way of teaching reading is primarily through phonics.

Learning to read using phonics isn’t a new concept, but in the past, it has been used in combination with other methods, such as ‘look and say’ and predicting or guessing words based on pictures or context.

Different schools use different phonics programmes, but it is likely that your child will learn their letter sounds in small groups together and then work on blending them to make words. The first sound group is usually ‘s, a, t, p, i, n.’ Later on they will learn sounds such as ‘ai, ee, igh, oa, oo,’. Once children know some sounds, they will be encouraged to blend them together to make words, such as, ‘r – ai – n.’ There are lots of websites to help with sound pronunciation, such as www.oxfordowl.co.uk (follow the link for ‘advice for parents’). This might seem obvious, but when sounding out ‘mat’, it is important to sound out the ‘m’ at the beginning as ‘mm’ sound rather than ‘muh’ As your child’s reading develops, make sure they understand what they are reading. There is the danger that children will happily decode all the words on a page but not take in or understand what they have read. To check your child’s comprehension, comment on things and ask questions as they read Don’t worry if your child’s reading level is below some of their peers and don’t try to push your child up through the book bands too quickly. Children learn to read at different rates - with some starting school being able to read fluently, whilst others might not recognise any letters. This will all even out within a few years. It is developing the love of reading rather than the skill of reading which is the most important. Children who have a love of reading will have the biggest advantage in the end – so enjoy your child’s reading journey with them!

TomPalmer Local author Tom Palmer speaks to Families

Tom Palmer is a local children’s author who hails from Leeds, but now lives in Halifax with his family. With themes such as football, rugby and history, his books are designed to inspire young people into reading. He also works closely with schools and libraries across the UK to promote reading. Emily Raleigh, editor of our sister magazine Families Pennines, caught up with Tom to see how he got into writing and more about his work in schools.

How did you get into writing books?

Sport. I struggled with reading when I was younger and my mum got me into reading about football and rugby, and then I started to write about them as well.

Did you ever think that you’d end making a career in writing books?

No. I didn’t think normal people could be authors. But then I met some authors when I worked in a bookshop in Leeds and I realised that they were just normal people who worked hard and wrote books, so I thought I’d give it a go. Reading books like Wuthering Heights inspired me, as they are set in the Pennines, and made me think if they can write books set here, why can’t I?

How did you get into working with schools and libraries to promote reading?

I didn’t think normal people could be authors. But then I met some authors when I worked in a bookshop in Leeds and I realised that they were just normal people who worked hard and wrote books, so I thought I’d give it a go.

When my first book came out I started going into schools doing author events and talks about reading for pleasure. I started doing more, the more books I did and really enjoyed it. I mostly cover the UK, but I have done some work overseas, mainly through my reading development work that I’d done with local libraries, where I’ve written papers that were translated into other languages.

What age range do your books target?

The younger ones 7-10, and the older ones 9-13. It’s difficult judging the age because of the content and language. Going into schools is a perfect indicator for me as I can stay in touch with what they like reading and writing and at what age. I also get a lot of support from my publisher to ensure the language is suitable for each age group I’m targeting with my books.

Where do you get your ideas from for new books? Do you do a lot of research?

The subjects are stuff that interests me. Like Killing Ground, it’s set in the part of Halifax where I live. I walk past the stadium sometimes and the lights are on and it looks a bit spooky.

The book that I’m just about to have accepted is about a fell runner, and my daughter does fell running.

Research depends on the book. I camped in a stadium overnight to know what it was like for Ghost Stadium. I try and immerse myself as much as I can. History is harder. With the Over the Line book, I listened to lots of interviews with former soldiers, I went to the battlefields where they fought - it just helps piece it altogether

Do you spend a lot of time researching real-life characters to ensure your books are as close to the person and their lives as possible?

When they’re real it’s tricky. When I went to visit the grave of Sid Wheelhouse from Over the Line I realised I was using him as a literary device to evoke empathy or feeling, and I felt ashamed.

So I found out more about him, his family, and what he did in his battalion and his career. It taught me a lesson as it was the first book I’d done with real people. You have to be really careful not to exploit them.

Do you get inspiration from people you meet for your fictional characters?

I do! It’s a lot easier. If you develop a character, it can become a bit of a cliché and they become two-dimensional. If you base it on real people and then alter them, I get a better idea of who my characters are.

How long does it usually take you to write a book?

It varies between 1 month and 4 months. Over the Line took longer with all the research I had to do. I’ll usually be writing one, but then planning and researching for the next one. I usually have three at very different stages, but I’d never write more than one at a time.

If you had the chance to turn one of your books into a film, which one would you choose and why?

Over the Line, because it’s my favourite and it’s the one I care most about. It’s also set around here. When I go to Huddersfield, I can imagine Jack the main character, and Fred walking the streets. I’d like to see it set here before the war, but it’s also an amazing real-life story.

What advice or tips would you give to parents who are trying to engage their children in reading?

I’d do what my mum did for me. She got me reading about things I was interested in. For me it was Ceefax. I hated reading, I was not a reader, but I read every page of Ceefax about sport. I didn’t define myself as a reader, but she made me realise I was. Get children to read about something that interests them on the internet, newspapers or magazines. Often literary fiction can be intimidating and put them off as they don’t understand the emotion and content in them and the big words. So, don’t limit their opportunities.

What to expect from your child’s first month at school

Last September, I was one of thousands of parents across the country waving their reception child off at the school gates.

The beginning of the journey started in April with that all important offer. A summer of anticipation followed, with trips to buy school uniform, name writing practice, playing ‘schools’ and making the most of those final flexible days before we were tied into the daily routine of school runs and living a life that revolved around 9am until 3pm, Monday to Friday.

Everything was building up to that point, but I hadn’t really considered beyond that, and how much school life would impact on us as a family. That first month at school left me feeling surprised, bewildered, proud, frustrated, and a whole host of other emotions – and I am in no doubt that my 4-year-old was probably experiencing something similar to me daily.

It helps to be aware of the possible challenges of having a new school starter, so that you are best armed to get through that first four weeks together unscathed!

Don’t feel guilty if you experience a sense of relief on that first day

Not all mums will be reaching for the tissues at the first drop off. For many mums (and this was me) there’s a sense of relief that the hectic toddler years are over and life becomes a bit more structured. Local mum Katie explains “I just felt relieved as my daughter was so ready for school…I could start reclaiming some of my grownup time and return to work.” Blubbing is not compulsory and no one will judge you if you skip back to your car!

Give after-school activities a miss

It may be tempting to extend the school day with a few stimulating after-school clubs but mum Jenny explains “Rebecca was so tired and grumpy after school in Reception year that she just didn’t have the stamina to do anything after school except sit and watch TV – after school clubs would have been a complete waste of money for us!”.

If they’re keen to do more, wait until the spring or summer term when they will be accustomed to the demands of the school day.

Mum Amy has this tip – “pre-empt any school run whinging with a snack for the journey home!” You will be amazed how hungry they are when they come out of school (to the point where you question whether the school gave them any lunch…)

Aaah yes, the class mascot – good old Dingle the Dog. Dingle comes with his own bag, instructions and a ‘diary’ in which YOU will have to write exactly what Dingle has got up to that weekend at your house, and provide photographic evidence. Looking through the diary and seeing Dingle on a skiing trip and at horse-riding lessons will make you cringe as you glue in a picture of Dingle watching TV or playing on the iPad (oh the shame….!)

You will be asked to part with money on a weekly basis - keep a spare change pot

Dad of two girls, Steve, has this practical tip to share – “you’ll never know when you need a bit of spare change to send in to school – for cake sales, raffle tickets, PTA donations, sponsored spells – it doesn’t have to be loads but it’s useful to have say £5 in spare change that you can dip into at short notice”. Or you could be like me and be looking down the back of the sofa at 8.30am for 50p on mufti-day…..

Buy more uniform that you think you’ll need

They will lose some uniform, and they will also come home covered in unidentifiable stains that will see you putting an entire outfit straight in the washing bin after only one wear. “You’ll be amazed by the amount of stuff they come home covered in…” explains Amelia, “…it might be a good idea to pick up some second-hand uniform for spares otherwise it can get really expensive”

Many children sail through the transition into a new class at the start of each school year, but for others it can be an anxious time.

Here are a few tips to help you support your child through this transition:

Acknowledge feelings: It’s important that your child feels listened to, so rather than saying; ‘Don’t worry, it will be fine,’ let them know that you understand eg. ‘It’s a bit worrying when you have to get used to a new teacher isn’t it?’

Don’t feed their anxiety: That said, there is a fine line between sympathizing with your child and ‘feeding’ their worry. Stay upbeat, if you are feeling anxious too try not to let it show.

Normalise:

Tell your child that they are not alone, lots of other children will be a bit nervous as well, nerves are perfectly normal.

Be prepared: Talk through any worries that your child may have and make sure that they

know what to do in certain situations. If your child keeps asking questions don’t answer yourself, but get them to tell you the answer eg. ‘What did we say you would do if you forgot your PE kit?’ Get them to imagine themselves solving this problem.

Talk to the school: Make sure the new teacher knows about it if your child is particularly anxious, and keep in touch with them in the early days of the new term.

And finally Give your child time to settle. You may find they regress in their behaviour

at home during this settling in time, but if they feel secure and loved at home coping with new challenges will be gradually get easier.

With the children back to school, or just starting school, you could be forgiven for thinking you are handing them over to the professionals and your job is just to make sure they get enough good food, rest and enjoyment so that they flourish in class.

Perhaps you think your teaching job is limited to hearing the little ones read while you make sure the bigger ones do their homework. But it’s more than that. What parents do at home educationally can make the difference between whether their children succeed at school or not.

The latest research from education and neuroscience proves how malleable the brain is, how learning potential can grow, how IQ isn’t fixed – it can go up if you invest in it, and it can probably go down if you don’t.

The truth is that there is more room at the top of the class than we thought and the vast majority of children could deliver performance at school more commonly associated with the gifted and talented. The key is developing the right learning attributes and attitudes such as curiosity, persistence and hard work. But with children spending as little as 15% of their time in class, life at home with parents has to be at the heart of this development.

If a child thinks they can, they keep trying. It’s the ones that think they can’t who fall behind – the ones who say ‘I’m rubbish at this’. Don’t sort everything out for them – and that includes tying their shoelaces as much as it does doing their homework. And model the behaviour – don’t give up too easily on things in your life.

Develop critical or logical thinking

Keywords: How could you do this? Have you done anything similar before? What did you do then? ‘I know you can. I know it’s hard to do now but I know you can learn how to do this in time if you work at it.’‘How could I find out the truth about that?’

The ability to deduct, hypothesise, reason and seek evidence is probably the characteristic most associated with academic success.

Encourage open mindedness Being open to new ideas is the hallmark of an advanced learner. Start with being open minded yourself so you model what it’s like to be receptive of ideas that differ from your own.

Practice It’s the only way to get good at something. Make sure it is regular, deliberate and planned, working towards achievable incremental goals and you practise what you can’t do until you can do it well.

Children ask lots of questions (more if you answer them) but the number falls dramatically once they get to school with only the teacher to answer them. Curiosity is at the heart of all learning and the link with high performance compelling. Your job is to answer your children’s questions initially and then later encourage them to find out the answers themselves.

Build imagination & big picture thinking Creativity builds learning capability and is vital for high performance and an important characteristic of students labelled as gifted is their ability to see how learning connects to the wider world.

Encourage perseverance To keep going when it’s tough is the most important behaviour in high performance. Everyone can finish easy things, the trick is to find pride in sticking to something hard and working at it till you can do it. Model it yourself in your family. Don’t give up half way through putting up a shelf because it’s too difficult/I’m useless/any excuse.

How children learn new things

Every parent anticipates and remembers their little one’s first steps. All those baby milestones – rolling, sitting up, waving, crawling, talking – are eagerly aided and encouraged. But what happens when your child gets a little bit older?

“We talk about specific windows for learning some of those early skills, but every age is a window of opportunity for engaging children, showing an interest, exposing them to a wide variety of experiences,” says consultant clinical psychologist Emma Citron, who specialises in children and adolescents. “The approaches might change but children don’t stop needing that input once they reach school age.”

The science bit

So what’s going on in there? Learning any new skill means building connections between brain cells called neural pathways. Like branches on a tree – and fed by the information around them in numerous different ways – more advanced skills stem from the fundamentals already in place. Not everyone learns in the same way, so the neural pathways for mastering the same skills can take different routes, but the more they are used, the stronger they get. Similarly, circuits that aren’t used will weaken until eventually they no longer exist.

“Physically, emotionally, socially, in every way the development process is ongoing,” Emma emphasises.

“Even a child of 9 or 10 would potentially need remedial parenting or therapy if for whatever reason they were suddenly not enabled to develop.”

“I don’t want to” The brain circuits for the most critical activities, such as breathing, are already developed at birth.

Those for the next wave of core skills – moving, eating and communicating – happen instinctively within roughly the same time frame for all babies because they are at some level essential for survival.

Create the right environment Remember how involved you were when your baby was trying to balance blocks in a tower or put together their first jigsaw pieces? “A young child needs to be in a caring, stimulated environment, where you are making eye contact, playing, giving your attention and time, and being patient,” Emma points out. The same applies when that child is attempting to master a new skill a few years down the line.

And as parents we learn pretty quickly not to introduce anything new or challenging if it’s nap or feeding time. “That hasn’t changed. If your child has switched off because they’re tired, overloaded, working hard at school all day and being shunted from A to B to C after school, they’re not going to be ripe for learning much of anything.”

Fail together Those neural pathways strengthen with use so practice really does make perfect. As beneficial as passing on your tips for the skills you do have and letting children see what can be achieved is showing that you’re not afraid to fail – and keep trying – when it’s something you can’t do. Make sure there are activities in the mix that are new to you, too – and if your child is sometimes the faster learner, they will gain confidence from that boost.

Be the best model Children will still learn – whether you want them to or not – by copying you. Of course it’s more subtle than the baby mirroring your actions, and the circle of people they will emulate in some way gets larger as they get older, taking in teachers, friends, public figures and others, but your own influences through your attitude and behaviours remains absolutely pivotal (whatever your independent pre-teen might like you to believe!).

“Do practise what you preach. It’s a very easy thing to say but one that many don’t actually do,” Emma warns. Don’t say you can’t without trying, don’t fall back on the same automatic excuses, don’t go in with a negative mindset or be overly self-critical, but – most importantly – embrace and share a positive, open-minded, approach to everyday life.

The brain circuits children are forming are powered by everything they are experiencing around them. It is their senses – the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and sensations – and their feelings and emotions that release the neurotransmitters (the chemicals in the brain) to ‘flick the switch’ on their new skills.

“Imbue your children with curiosity and passion by showing the same to them,” Emma says. “Everything else stems from this.”

Five reasons to visit

Our family love caravan holidays and we almost always travel to France for one every year.

But this year we decided to and head to the Northumberland coast instead. The decision was not taken lightly as the children love France and the top notch facilities that we’ve found on holiday parks over there, but I promised them all that the Northumberland coast was every bit as exciting and beautiful. Here are five reasons we might just do the same next year.

Bamburgh Beach The pristine white sands and clear (but chilly) waters are stunning and would be packed with tourists if they were further south in England; especially since the beach is backed by one of the most impressive castles in the world.

But packed is not a word synonymous with Northumberland and consequently you can have large swathes of this beach, right below the massive castle entirely to yourselves.

The sand is white and the water is clear and blue, but the waves can often be a little daunting for dipping children’s toes. No problem, just walk ten minutes north of the castle toward Bamburgh lighthouse and an area known as Stag Rocks, where a number of rock pools are deep enough and warm enough to paddle in and search for crabs and starfish.

Castles Galore!

If your kids like castles- and let’s face facts most of them do- then they can play King of the Castle at dozens of castle sites. Many of these are now spectacular ruins, while others have been restored to their original glory. Bamburgh Castle is probably the pick of the bunch but nearby Alnwick might feel more familiar, having stared as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies and as Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey. Either way you’ll be spoilt for choice in this region, which has more castles than any other county in England.

Haggerston Castle- Okay you’re not going to be staying in the castle itself, because Haggerston Castle is now best known as a Haven holiday park. But veteran campers and newbies alike will love Haggerston Castle. Free facilities include two pools, half a dozen or so play parks and a good size soft play area.

While many other exciting activities can be enjoyed for just £4! These bargain activities include bungee trampolining, Water Waterz - also known as aqua zorbing- mini jet bikes and Turbo Paddlers- which are essentially hand powered pedalos used under close supervision in the swimming pool.

For less adventurous kids a pedalo voyage on the main lake is fun and certainly a haven for wildlife. There are ducklings, goslings and cygnets aplenty around the lake, while more elusive animals such as otters and beautiful red squirrels can be found by more determined nature hunters. Haven actually run a programme called Nature Rockz on several of their sites- including Haggerston- for the younger visitors to explore local nature and learn cool bush craft techniques like lighting fire with sticks.

Farne Islands These rocky outcrops, just thirteen miles south of the Haven camp, are famous for the resident seals and puffins. May and June are particularly magical as thousands of puffins whizz right in front of you with beaks full of fish from the sea, then scurry into the rabbit holes in which they rear their chicks. It’s a truly magical sight made all the more magical by the rest of the wildlife whizzing above and below! You’ll see seals aplenty lounging on the rocks and bobbing their heads up to peek at you, and hundreds of rare seabirds coming here to rear their young, right in front of you.

It’s little wonder that the royal family have made numerous visits to this are over the years, including the Queen, Princess Anne and the Queen Mum.

A Magic Road Forget the Yellow Brick Road, just two miles down the road from Haggerston is probably the coolest tide in England because as the North Sea recedes a road magically appears and leads to the Holy Island of Lindesfarne across the sea. Harrison was literally dumbstruck by the event and wanted to see it happen again.“In about 12 hours you can son,” I had to tell him.

Once you’ve crossed the “magic road” you’ll park near the main village- population 160- and head for the island’s main sights; Lindesfarne Castle- yes another one- and the nearby priory. Here you’ll find upturned fishing boats that have been turned into storage sheds for nets and lobster pots and fishermen bringing their catch to shore, right in front of the nearby castle and priory ruins. From the headlands by the priory you can often hear the haunting sounds seals wailing on a sandbanks between the island and the mainland.

The harbour at Seahouses 13 miles south of Haggerston Castle and is the launch point for most of the region’s Farne Island tours. Here you’ll find no shortage of companies plying the route but by far the most famous of these operators is Billy Shiels, whose boats have been running trips to the Farne Islands for six decades and are the company that welcomed the Queen and the Queen Mother in 1962 aboard. familiesonline.co.uk

HalloweenSpirit How to get your kids in the

It’s one of the best times of the year for children, but how can you help your child get into the spirit of Halloween?

We’ve come up with lots of ideas to create a truly scary atmosphere for your child so that everyone is ready and prepared for the spookiest event of the year.

Halloween custard

Layer broken-up chocolate brownie and custard into a short glass. Once filled to the top, use 2 mini marshmallows and chocolate buttons to create eyes.

Get crafty!

All children like to make a mess and be imaginative.

Well, let them do this for Halloween. Most of these ideas only require simple materials and things you can find lying around your house.

Milk bottle ghosts

Using empty milk cartons and black pen, draw spooky faces onto the plastic.

Tissue paper ghouls

Take an old jam jar and wrap with tissue paper. Then draw spooky faces onto the paper. You can then either place a torch inside or a candle with parental supervision.

Magic foaming potion

Take a glass, and place it in a large container to catch overflowing liquid.

Fill the glass about halfway full with vinegar. Then put a few drops of food colouring on a spoon with bicarbonate of soda (the more you use the bigger the foam!). Stir the spoon into the vinegar and watch the magic happen. You could also add some glitter for extra sparkle!

Pumpkin prints

Cut an apple in half, dip in orange paint and have pumpkin shapes printed before your eyes!

Get cooking!

Muddy worms

Make up a batch of chocolate Angel delight, and poke jelly worms out of the top as though they’re coming out of the ground. Then sprinkle with grated chocolate to look like worm casts.

What better way to enjoy this event than with lots of edible treats? Below are some really easy and cheap ideas you can try at home.

Chocolate mousse gravestones

Take your chocolate mousse (either homemade or shop bought) and crumble broken Oreo biscuits over the top to resemble dirt. Then stick a rich tea biscuit gravestone and use an icing pen to write the message on the tombstone

Jelly worms

Pack a cup with straws and pour in your jelly mix. Then leave to set in the fridge. Getting them out can be tricky, but you could turn this into a great Halloween game!

Cheeseburger faces

A great dinner treat to celebrate Halloween and this requires no effort or skill!

Simply place or tear cheese into faces and melt on the top of your burgers.

Get costume designing!

Costumes nowadays can be really expensive, and whilst some children will happily go out wearing a bin bag with arm holes cut in, others will want something a little more complex. Rather than spend a fortune on pricey costumes, find ways to design their own. Here are a few simple ideas

Witch’s hat

Roll a large piece of cardboard into a cone to fit the circumference of your child’s head. Glue, or tape from the inside and trim any spare cardboard (this could be used for decoration later). Then decorate as you please - use glitter, coloured can and pens to design your hat.

Make a cardboard Wall-E

If your child likes Disney, then this character is incredibly easy to make, and just involves cutting holes in a large cardboard box. If that doesn’t suffice, wrap arms and legs in tin foil, and create goggles using either cardboard or an empty egg box.

Crocodile

Another way you can recycle those old boxes is by making a crocodile head. Take a long square box and cut a large triangular shape out of both sides for the jaws (make sure you cut enough out so your child can see!). Then cut teeth out of white paper and voila! To make this even more specific, you could consider pairing this with a ticking clock to replicate the crocodile in Peter Pan.

Halloween decorations

You can choose whether to design pumpkins, Frankenstein or ghouls and will then need orange, green or white tissue paper respectively.

Wrap the tissue around a toilet roll, tuck in at one end and tie with a pipe cleaner at the other. Then decorate with whatever you can get your hands on!

Spooky spider crafts

For this, all you’ll need is an old toilet roll, paint, scissors, paper and googly eyes. All you need to do is cut the end of the roll into 8 leg sized pieces and bend the legs upwards so they stick out. Dip the legs in black paint and print onto paper. Then stick on your eyes.

Spooktacular Fun at Stockeld Park this Autumn There are ghoulish goings on this October half term at the Halloween Adventure at Stockeld Park. For a spooky spectacular of family fun, the award winning visitor attraction is opening daily for half term and Halloween from Friday 20th October to Tuesday 31st October from 10.30 am until 8.30pm.

The Enchanted Forest with its four large themed adventure playgrounds, plus a host of magical and whimsical interactive play pieces, including the brand new ‘Book of Books’ complete with the ‘bookworm’ spiral slide, will welcome all visitors from the young to the young at heart. For the Halloween and Christmas seasons the Forest will come alive with joyful and unique illuminations, lighting up the whole forest and the lake, including illuminated woodland animals and wild ones too!

The Forest will remain open until 8.30 every evening of half term and Halloween. It can also be enjoyed on a journey by Nordic ski, which is great family fun. Spooking younger visitors, a coven of wicked witches is flying in to haunt the Forest for half term, with riddles and challenges that have to be solved.

The Stockeld Park ice rink will also be in full swing for those who want to work up an appetite for hot chocolate with spooky biscuits or something more filling in the Halloween themed café. Try not to get lost in the giant illuminated yew tree Maze which will have added fun with the ‘find the bat’ challenge.
