Ah Christmas… The sound of jingling bells and wood crackling in the fireplace, the smell of roast and chocolate and… tons and tons of waste (30% more than usual to be exact*).
You are no doubt aware that Christmas is probably the world’s greatest environmental disaster, and it is happening every year!
Here are just a few mind blowing stats for UK:
• We throw away: 227,000 miles of wrapping paper, 250 tonnes of Christmas trees, 12,500 tonnes of Christmas decorations.
• An astonishing 2 million turkeys, 74 million mince pies and 17.2 million Brussel sprouts are binned every Christmas.
• The carbon impact of Christmas Eve, Christmas, and Boxing Day is estimated at 5.5% of the UK’s total annual carbon footprint.
• Every year, the UK citizens spend about £700 million on unwanted gifts!
• An average child in the UK gets 16 gifts, of which 41% will be discarded by March the following year.
Christmas has been shamelessly commercialised by big business and we and the planet are the victims. Dazzled by the everpresent lights, lured by “SALE” signs, and blinded by hoard mentality we very often forget that Christmas is not about the number of gifts we give and get or the amount of food and drinks on the table.
It is about being together, sharing memories of the past and best wishes for the future. Once we remember that, our Christmas will become not only more sustainable but also more meaningful, fun, and stress-free.
Christmas is the biggest commercial event of the year and retailers use lots of different psychological tricks to make us buy more than we really need. Sales, and particularly events like Black Friday play on a fear of “missing out”. To make the best of special Christmas offers, prepare in advance. Think carefully of what you want to buy, write it down and stick to your list!
Made in most cases from plastics like acrylic or polyester, with an average of 2 wears in its lifetime, the Christmas jumper represents the worst of fast fashion. So do not buy a new one this year! There are plenty of DIY tutorials on You Tube both on how to refresh your old Christmas jumper or give a Christmassy look to your regular sweater. Very often all you will need is some Christmas baubles and 10mins of your time.
You can now rent that special dress and accessories for any occasion by a click of a button. Check out Hurr Collective, By Rotation or Rotaro and surely you will find the perfect outfit. But remember — the most sustainable dress is the one you already have so first investigate your wardrobe!
Why not use your skills and make your Christmas gifts this year? Perhaps you can make an apple jam for your friends and family? Or gingerbread men? Or chocolate pralines?
It is high time to ditch the stigma of gifting second hand: Jewellery, home design or designer bags will be much more loved than another pair of socks or scented candles. And instead of a toy your child will get bored with by New Year’s Eve, why not adopt a wild animal or buy a theatre ticket instead?
I collect brown paper added to online orders and use it instead of wrapping paper. It looks lovely with a red straw instead of ribbon and you can add a personal message on it—a cute drawing or a note. You can also use a reusable wrap—like a piece of pretty cloth or a handkerchief. My friend makes her gift wrapping out of old books and newspapers.
Unless you plan to reuse the plastic tree for at least another 10 years, it is better to choose a natural grown tree from FSC certified plantations. Just remember to take off the decorations (and save them for next year) and dispose of the tree properly. Councils in London offer free Christmas tree collections every year in January. Alternatively, you can rent a tree or buy a tree in the pot so that it can grow over warmer months to be reused next year.
My most precious childhood memories are of sitting at a table with my whole family making paper garlands for the Christmas tree. Now, the internet is full of great ideas for DIY decorations you can make with your children. I particularly love those using natural materials like pines and sticks as they require a visit to a local park first. A full and fun family day sorted!
Be sure to make a meal plan and not to have more food than needed. If you happen to have leftovers, consider making a meal of them the next day, freezing them, or sharing with community on Olio app. Think about the choice of meat for roast—turkey and chicken come with considerably lower carbon footprint than lamb and beef and take less energy and time to cook, especially when roasted in pieces, not a whole. Try out more plant-based dishes made of seasonal and locally sourced ingredients—they use less energy to prepare and are better for the planet.
Check www.loveyourfood.co.uk for great recipes and ideas for meals made of leftovers.
Christmas is about sharing so make a gift of your time to a local organisation supporting community—a foodbank, a community kitchen, or a child charity. Perhaps you have a lonely neighbour or live next door to a vulnerable family that needs help with Christmas shopping?
During Christmas we generally have more time, so grab your family and go out to a local park or nature reserve. Being around nature in a mindful way makes us more relaxed, happy, and connected to the natural world.

Candice Thompson is French and her husband is British. She has one child in CM1 (Year 5) Bilingual curriculum with intensive English.
Stéphanie Arnaud is French and has three children. The oldest is in secondary school in 4eme (year 9), the other two in Marie d'Orliac in CE2 (year 4) and CM2 (year 6) in the Bilingual curriculum with intensive English.
Nicky Harfitt is British and has three children, one in CM1 (year 5), one in CP (year 2), and one in PS (nursery); the oldest two are following the 50-50 bilingual curriculum, the younger one in PS (nursery) is in the Bilingual curriculum with intensive English.
How did you choose the school?
Nicky says they loved the idea of the children having a bilingual education. “We figured that in an ever-shrinking world, language is becoming increasingly important.” Stephanie immediately loved “the atmosphere, the building, their spirit, their rules, the playground, the director!“
What do you like about the school?
Nicky finds the school welcoming and is very inclusive—involving for students and parents alike… “The school is big but friendly; confusing and slightly overwhelming at first to get your head around the logistics of how the English and French systems align, but we have an incredibly helpful community of staff and parent representatives to guide us through it and you quickly get the hang of it; even if your French isn’t up to much—like mine! There are always competitions running, social meet ups, parents in school often assisting with guided reading, secondhand uniform sales, school bake sales or organising charitable events…”
Stephanie loves the kindness and professionalism of the teachers and all the staff, all the events, “the thoroughness of the programme, all children know each other. It’s a big community! We’re a big Family!
Opposite the school, you have South Park, where all children meet after school. I like the excellent teachers, their high expectations in terms of knowledge, their capacity to help our children to be better and better without stress, pressure or competition. I love the location in the Parsons Green area and of course, South Park just opposite. For afterschool, you have Les Ateliers with a lot of different sporting, cultural and artistic activities. All teachers are amazing: their kindness, their listening, their high professionalism, their conscientiousness, their team spirit. Our children are all well prepared to join the secondary school.”
How does the bilingual teaching work?
Nicky: “We have a week in French, starting on Thursday, followed by a week in English… both following a fluid yet uniquely amalgamated curriculum. I think it's hugely beneficial for the children to be taught things like music, maths and science in two different ways (language aside); the methodology and style of teaching is definitely different between the two weeks and each of my children have responded differently to the different ways.”
What is the school best at?
Candice loves its flexibility despite large numbers of kids. “Making different types of people, from different origins, feel welcome.”
Giving the children good exposure to a diversity of language and culture in a nurturing environment is what Nicky appreciates. “Good grounding or precursor to secondary education...”
Can you sum up your child’s school in a few words….
Stephanie: “Academic excellence, family spirit and fun events.“
Candice: “Not too pushy, inclusive, not leaving anyone behind.”

Q: How would the students describe you? Always there. We have two sites, and children are always amazed at how much they see me on both sites. One asked if I had a transporter!
Approachable. I love hearing their stories or seeing their work. They love showing me what they have achieved.
Fun. I will often be found doing the rainbow dance, jumping out of cupboards dressed up as a Learning Power superhero or dancing on the front door in the morning to help remind children that school is fun—especially after the long holidays.
Q: What was it about the school that made you want to apply for the position?
This is my 14th year at Broomwood, and I have seen a lot of change in that time, however the fundamental things remain constant: our ethos, our values, our passion, and our determination to ensure that what we do is all about getting it right for our pupils. That is why I am still here, I adore Broomwood and everything it stands for.
Q: What inspired you to become a teacher and later, a headteacher?
I’ve always wanted to be a teacher and knew from aged 7 that this is what I was going to do.
I completed a four-year BEd at Glasgow University and taught in Glasgow for two years before relocating to London and finding my dream job at Broomwood. I’m so proud to be leading a school that I truly love.
Q: How do you think a head teacher can make a difference to an individual student?
The Head sets the tone for the whole school. They’re part cheerleader, part-counsellor, partinspirational speaker, part Admissions, part recruiter, part HR, part disciplinarian and passionate about the curriculum—they should be the rock around which the school pivots. Above anything else, they should be the champion for the children in our care. That’s what really matters—getting it right for them. That means recruiting inspirational teachers, giving them the means and opportunity to put excellent teaching and new ideas into practice and helping children feel safe, happy and
valued. I know my job is working when I see children who love coming to school and teachers who feel empowered to deliver their very best.
Q: What have you been most proud of since joining Broomwood Hall Lower School as Headteacher?
Scoring Excellent in the recent ISI inspection: Last year I had the opportunity of being Acting Head and leading my team through inspection gaining the highest result of Excellent. This is something I am hugely proud of as it was a real team effort. Since taking on the Headship, we have continued to build on this achievement.
My Staff: The staff have great ideas and initiatives to improve the provision we provide and are always looking at ways to modernise our curriculum. I know I can rely on each and every one of them.
My pupils: I am also extremely proud of our pupils; they are the true ambassadors of our school and loved showing it off to the inspectors.
Q: What is something about yourself that noone else knows?
I wish I could dance; I often think I have dance moves like Cheryl Cole & Little Mix but in truth my 3-year-old has better moves than I do.
Q: Premier League or Last Night at the Proms? Last Night at the Proms although I do keep an eye on Fulham's results as my Dad and brother are big fans.

How do you juggle work and home when your kids won’t sleep?
It’s 4.30am and I’m sleeping across the bottom end of my bed. I’m all crunched up so my feet don’t dangle o the edge, with no pillow and my duvet at a weird angle. I doubt this even counts as sleep – but I’ll take whatever I can get.
So how did I get here?
My three-year-old daughter and my fifteen-month-old son are just emerging from a month of back-to-back nursery illnesses, which has thrown their sleep right o course. Although, even in normal circumstances, neither of them is great at sleeping when they should or where they should. They certainly don’t sleep like the children in all the parenting books I’ve read (seriously, who are those children?).
Here’s a typical night in our house at the moment…
• 8pm: Both kids go to sleep in their bedrooms.
• 11pm: My son wakes and will only go back to sleep in our bed. Husband goes to sofa.
• 1am: My daughter wakes and goes to sleep on the sofa with my husband.
• 2am onwards: My son wakes one or two more times and I cuddle him back to sleep with varying degrees of success. Sometimes it takes an hour.
• 6am: The kids are up for the day.
Sometimes my son falls asleep on my lap and I have to shu le him onto our mattress at a diagonal angle, in order not to wake him, leaving me just the bottom strip of the bed to sleep on.
Sometimes he falls asleep on my arm and I have to ‘ninja slide’ it out from under him when he’s in a deep-sleep phase. The whole thing is absurd.
Of course, I still need to go to work – and working while sleepdeprived is brutal.
Madonna and Margaret Thatcher, two under-slept women who were big in the 1980s, both seemed to equate a lack of rest with a passion for their job. This is questionable for a million reasons. Tracy Emin, big in the 1990s, perhaps more sensibly described her insomnia as ‘crippling.’
In any case, I just turn out to be a rubbish version of my usual self. My eyes burn as I read research reports, concentrating is hard and pretending not to be tired is tiring.
In meetings, part of me is listening to what everyone is saying but part of me is just thinking about how well-slept they all look. If you’ve had a meeting with me recently and you thought I was a bit distracted, it’s because I was thinking about how great the skin under your eyes looks.
Overnight, when I’m woken by the kids, I struggle to go back to sleep as work-thoughts pop up and race around my head. I lie at the bottom of the bed and write emails in my mind. Meanwhile my son snu les and snores like a contented little sea-lion, in his rightful place at the centre of the only double bed in the house.
I was, of course, working when I was on maternity leave last year – looking after children and running a house is a job. But I was surrounded by other women with young children, in a blearyeyed ecosystem where everyone was tired. The professional
‘back-to-work’ world feels very di erent. Arianna Hu ington has said that sleep is a feminist issue, as women get far less of it than men.
But, in the midst of it all, there are suddenly moments of pure rest.
There are endless parenting books that tell you not to cosleep with your children but in my family’s case it’s a balm for everyone involved. At the weekend I have afternoon naps with my daughter and her truly innocent sleep, the kind that only a child can have, calms me until I drop o too.
