Speak English – Easy!

Merstham Hub News Pupils from Furzefield Primary School in Merstham have buried a time capsule at the site of Merstham’s new Community Hub, to be dug up in 2047. The time capsule gives an insight into the local area and the lives of children in 2017 and includes a newspaper, an old and a new £1 coin and information about their school.

When complete, the Merstham Community Hub will include a new library, youth centre, pre-school childcare, training rooms, a café, public IT resources and drop-in advice facilities. The development also includes three food outlets.

The hub is expected to be largely complete by the end of the Summer when the contractors hand the building over the Surrey County Council for the library, community facilities and shops to be fitted out. The hub and food outlets will open to the public in the autumn. For more info visit mcft.org.uk

Let’s Explore Horley The founders of Let’s Race and Let’s Golf in Horley are branching out into the softplay market, with a new centre opening on site in October.

Dora the Explorer will launch the centre on Oct 21st, featuring a three storey adventure play zone, a unique mezzanine level with play zone access for private parties, a separate toddler and baby area, and a café area for parents and guests.

Based on the themes of the sea, the jungle and space, Let’s Explore has been designed to unleash the imagination of youngsters. The elements incorporated within the design have been cleverly thought out, to encourage physical activity and stimulate little minds.

High performance for all By Wendy Berliner With the children back to school, or just starting school, you could be forgiven for thinking you are handing them over to the professionals and your job is just to make sure they get enough good food, rest and enjoyment so that they flourish in class.

What follows are five top ideas you can use at home. They come from Deborah’s High Performance Learning system which is being introduced in schools in the UK and abroad and is detailed for parents in Great Minds and How to Grow Them.

Perhaps you think your teaching job is limited to hearing the little ones read while you make sure the bigger ones do their homework. But it’s more than that. What parents do at home educationally can make the difference between whether their children succeed at school or not.

How to create a high performing child

The latest research from education and neuroscience proves how malleable the brain is, how learning potential can grow, how IQ isn’t fixed – it can go up if you invest in it, and it can probably go down if you don’t.

The truth is that with the right support at home, the vast majority of children could deliver performance at school more commonly associated with the gifted and talented. There’s room for a lot more at the top of the class.

In our new book Great Minds and How to Grow Them, Professor Deborah Eyre, a lifetime specialist in advanced learning, and myself, an education journalist who has taken a special interest in why some children from similar backgrounds do badly at school whilst others don’t, have looked at the research in detail and come up with guidance any parent can use at home, fitting it seamlessly and easily into normal daily life.

1. Cultivate confidence and resilience

If a child thinks they can, they keep trying. It’s the ones that think they can’t who fall behind – the ones who say ‘I’m rubbish at this’. Don’t sort everything out for them – and that includes tying their shoelaces as much as it does doing their homework.

And model the behaviour – don’t give up too easily on things in your life.

Key words: How could you do this? Have you done anything similar before?

What did you do then? ‘I know you can. I know it’s hard to do now but I know you can learn how to do this in time if you work at it.’

2. Develop critical or logical thinking:

The ability to deduct, hypothesise, reason and seek evidence is probably the charac¬teristic most associated with academic success.

Keywords: ‘Why do you think. . . (bread goes mouldy, babies cry, leaves fall when autumn comes, people disagree about climate change?)’ ‘I wonder if that happened because of this?’ ‘How could I find out the truth about that?’

3. Encourage them to monitor their progress

– very important to the high performer is knowing how they are doing, knowing they are on track with their homework for example, knowing they need to put more effort into improving certain things.

Key words: ‘What do you need to be able to do this? How can you check you’re on track? How can you tell whether you are doing it right?

4. Encourage open mindedness

– being open to new ideas is the hallmark of an advanced learner.

Start with being open minded yourself so you model what it’s like to be receptive of ideas that differ from your own.

Keywords: ‘That’s different to us, isn’t that interesting?’ ‘I never thought of it like that, but that is such a good approach.’

Welcome to the Water Last year a Sport England survey reported that the number of regular swimmers in the UK had declined by 24% in the past 10 years. This is despite an additional 500+ public pools being created during this time, mainly in London and the South East.

The ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) believes that this may be down to people enjoying other water-related exercise, such as open water swimming and aqua aerobics, and the Swim England body is continuing to support teachers, clubs, professionals and families to become a ‘Swimming Nation’.

Families believes that swimming in an essential, fun, healthy and potentially lifesaving skill to give your children. Colin Bull Swimming provides lessons for children from 2 years, to adult beginners through to adult training sessions. Their aim is that everyone should feel happy and safe in the water, and will then learn the necessary skills to start learning to swim independently.

Colin says “I think it’s very important that the parents also get involved during the lesson, that’s why we like to see parents sitting, watching and encouraging the children from the side of the pool.”

How to Share a Nanny

From this September, the parents of 3 and 4-year-olds in England may be entitled to 30 hours of free childcare. If you already get 15 hours a week of free early education, then this may be increased to 1140 hours in total a year.

What is a Nanny Share?

Eligibility is pretty broad and the hours can be used with any OFSTED registered childcare provider. To check if you qualify, visit the HMRC-run website Childcare Choices for your unique 11-digit reference number. This code is important as you'll need to submit it to your childcare provider to claim your allowance.

This can be claimed concurrently with the tax-free childcare scheme, where the government contributes £2 for every £8 you pay. You, and any partner, must each expect to earn (on average) at least £120 per week (that’s equal to 16 hours at the Nat Min. or Living Wage). Note that the tax-free scheme can’t be used in conjunction with Childcare Vouchers.

A nanny share is when you and another family share the costs and responsibilities of employing a nanny. It's a good option if you want to employ a nanny but can’t afford the expense on your own.

The nanny would be employed on a daily basis and would look after your child and another family’s child in either of your homes.

This may be at the same time, or each family may have different hours. Another option is that the nanny may live with one family, but also care for other children within that home. Nanny shares work best when the two families involved know each other, as it’s important that you can place trust with the other family and their home is a safe environment. If you would like to enter into a nanny share but seek another family to join up with, then you can ask around amongst friends, local nanny agencies, playgroups, nurseries or children's centres.

How could it work for you?

• It provides your children with the best of both worlds, as your child is receiving near 1-2-1 care from a nanny but has other children around for company and play, from the comfort of a home setting (yours or a friends).

• These are a similar benefits to having a childminder, with the bonus that you can negotiate more flexibility if your working hours vary or if you work evenings or weekends.

Pick the Perfect Pre-school Class The world of pre-school classes!

Before having a child, you have no idea that this world even exists.

From Music to Massage, Sensory to Signing, if there is a skill that babies are able to learn, there is sure to be a class for it. But which to choose?

Where to go? What should you look for in a class? If you are a little overwhelmed with choice – here are some guidelines as to what to look out for when choosing the perfect class for your child.

What are the benefits to my child?

If you’re choosing to pay for something for your child, do ensure that you get your money’s worth. Have a look at the class website and get an understanding of what the benefits are to your child. What will they learn? How will it help them from a developmental point of view? Don’t be afraid to ask this on the phone or by email when you make an initial enquiry.

A good pre-school teacher will be passionate about the skills they want to pass on and teach your child, so do talk and ask them questions as to the class structure and how the class will be of benefit.

Find out about the lessons themselves – how they are structured, whether there is progression, what is the same every week and what is different, and what are the main learning objectives in taking part.

Is the class age appropriate?

What is suitable for a newborn baby, is not necessarily suitable for an exploring toddler. It is a good idea to find out how each age group is catered for and whether the sessions are mixed age, or age specific.

Length of the class It is tempting to go for a longer class, as you feel you are getting more value for money. However, do bear in mind that children’s attention spans are very short.

It is generally better to have 30 minutes of focused time with maximum learning potential, than a full hour with a very tired and over stimulated little one at the end of it.

Cost As with everything, there are varying degrees of cost of classes. Ensure that the class experience justifies the cost. In classes at the higher end of the monetary scale, the props used should be excellent, the curriculum tried and tested with obvious benefits to the children attending class and the teacher should be very knowledgeable familiesonline.co.uk

and professional. Cheaper classes may be more attractive – but may not have all the relevant insurances and risk assessments in place to ensure the safety of your child.

Try it out Most pre-school classes offer a complimentary class so that you can go and experience the class and see how your little one responds. This is a fantastic way to get a proper feel as to how your weekly class will be. Book in and try them out!

It is always a good idea to check out where classes are held. Is there parking nearby, are classes held on one level (ensure there are no stairs with buggies to negotiate), and is there somewhere nice to have a coffee with fellow parents after the class? Is the venue clean, with no hazards for inquisitive little ones?

If equipment is used with the children – is it in good condition? If children have things to play with, such as musical instruments, are they clean and sanitized?

Other things to ask is if the classes are insured, and whether the teachers are aware of Child Protection and are First Aid trained.

Teachers One of the key things to get right when signing up for a weekly pre-school class is the teaching staff. Are they friendly and have a good rapport with the children?

Do the current children in class listen and respond to the teacher? Is the teacher informative when discussing what they are teaching? Do they ensure that all children have equal input in to the class?

Finally – and this is key – do you like the teacher?! As it will be their voice you will be hearing every week, make sure it is one that you are happy to listen to!

Reputation Finally – the best judge of the best local classes is your fellow parents. Ask around and see who your friends would recommend. Most pre-school classes also have their own Facebook pages so visit these, read the reviews and get a feel of that type of class.

This year you’ll discover a range of interesting stalls to browse and buy from as well as great local produce and a variety of refreshment stands including a beer tent! The Surrey and Sussex Coppice workers will be demonstrating their skills and there will be opportunities to buy a whole host of wood products. Visitors can enjoy horse & wagon rides, kids can take part in bug hunts, tree climbing and zip wires.

There’ll also be coppice crafts & wood products and a wide range of local food on offer, as well as live music. Sounds like a fab day out!

Tickets are £10.00 on the gate and can be purchased in advance on-line for the discounted rate of £7.50.

Give kids an added layer of protection by dressing them in regular clothing underneath their costumes - this provides warmth and an added level of skin protection from fire.

Act fast to treat burns The most crucial thing when treating burns is to get the area cooled with cool (not cold) running water as quickly as possible. 10 mins of cooling is recommended for most burns to treat the layers of skin that have been affected by the heat.

If you can remove clothing and jewellery then do, if they are stuck then leave them on but cool through them regardless.

Think first aid and be prepared before accidents happen If you experience burns to the hands, face, feet or genitals, always seek medical advice. If these burns blister (do not pop them!) or several layers of skin are removed, call 999 immediately.

Keep a first aid kit handy in case of accidents so you are ready in an emergency.

Never go back to a lit firework Regardless of how tempting it is, never go back to a lit fire work and make sure everyone stays a safe distance. Be alert in case of fireworks falling on to their side or falling off their stand once lit.

Minimise house-fire risks with safety candles and lights Never leave a naked flame unattended, particularly with children around. Rather than using traditional candles and naked flames inside pumpkins, opt for the safety version instead, such as LED candles and LED tea-lights. Available in most good outlets and online stores.

A new terrifying 10K promising a dastardly route over paved tracks and off-road trails with a few tricks and surprises along the way.

Take the children on a witch hunt around Oxted town centre this half term thanks to Love Oxted Halloween Trails.

The free family-friendly trails take place from Fri 20th-Sat 28th October (excluding Sundays) and are suitable for children of all ages.

Two trails will be created: the Ghosts and Ghouls Trail on Station Road East and the Witches and Wizards Trail on Station Road West. There will be two levels of clues for both age groups. Youngsters may even be rewarded with delicious sweet treats along the way!

Participants will be able to pick up a trail sheet at Oxted Library

or Tandridge Leisure Centre.

A star prize will be awarded to one winner of each trail.
