News & Views NSPCC teams up with Santa to make Christmas wishes come true Children’s charity the NSPCC is once again teaming up with Santa to make children’s Christmas wishes come true by sending them a personalised letter from Santa, sent direct from the North Pole via Rudolph Mail.

The colourful, beautifully illustrated letters include the child’s name, age, gender, and a few other details which only Santa could know. Santa has even written a special poem to celebrate baby’s first Christmas too – a keepsake to treasure for years to come.

Every £5 raised by Letter from Santa helps the NSPCC’s ChildLine service be there whenever a child seeks help either online or by phone.

Homework...HELP!

Why is homework so important?

Youngest members of St John’s College have a new place to learn Little St John’s, the day nursery and reception class of St John’s College in Southsea, moved location over the summer and was officially opened by a group of little stars on Saturday 4 October.

The official opening event, which was planned as part of the College’s Open Day, was attended by current parents and pupils, staff and also a number of local parents considering the new setting for their children. Visitors enjoyed a glass of bubbly and canapés as they looked around the newly refurbished facility.

Homework encourages independent learning skills and backs up what has been learnt in the classroom. It shows both teachers and parents what a child is capable of and can also highlight what they haven’t understood during the school day.

How much homework should my child be getting?

It depends on the age of your child, however here is a rough guide to the amount of homework your child should be receiving.

Reception: 30 minutes a week Years 1 & 2: One hour a week

Soothing crying babies with

Reflexology

All babies cry, and some cry a lot; this can be distressing and on occasions frustrating for all concerned.

Sometimes it is easy to work out why babies are crying, for example hunger, dirty nappy, wind or if they are tired, however sometimes there appears to be no apparent reason and nothing seems to soothe them. Some simple reflexology moves on the feet of your baby may help reduce those screaming fits.

Reflexology for babies uses massage strokes over areas of the feet and only requires gentle pressure. There are a few simple moves that you can try on your baby, try and do these moves for 5 minutes every day when your baby is calm. Lie the baby down, face up, make this a fun time with lots of smiles, or you could even sing nursery rhymes to your baby as you work on their feet.

Techniques for babies Work on one foot at a time, use one hand to hold each foot, one at a time and the other one to make the following actions: 1) On the bottom of each foot use your thumb to make circular movements, working in a clockwise direction in the middle of foot – this mimics the direction the digestive system works in the body.

2) Repeat the same move over the heel area 3) Use your thumb to gently push up from the base of each toe, up to the very tops of the toe.

4) Place your thumb in the centre of the foot and gently press in and hold for about 10 seconds.

These moves can also be carried out in the same manner on the hands.

During a screaming fit, try picking your baby up and placing on your shoulder, use one hand to support the baby and the other hand to perform the reflexology moves described on both hands and feet.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a no n-invasive, relaxing complementary ther apy that aims to optimise both phys ical and emotional health.

It works by massagi ng and stimulating sp ecific points (usually on th e feet but sometim es on the hands, face and ears) called reflex po in ts.

Reflexology during Pregnancy

By Susan Cunningham There is evidence from women who feel they have benefitted from reflexology during pregnancy and that their pregnancy discomforts and minor ailments have been relieved. Two recent studies have shown that reflexology “significantly reduced pain during labour”, “reduced the length of the first stage of labour”[1] and “improved the quality of sleep in post-natal women” [2].

In the context of pregnancy, reflexology aims to optimize the health potential of the Mum-To-Be and to support her as her body goes through a period of great change, encouraging balance, relaxation and harmony within the body.

Capturing Cuteness

Photography tips

As a family photographer I’m often asked for tips to help my clients when photographing their own children. So here’s a few of my favourite tips which you may find useful too.

Silly faces are OK

Keep them in one place

Cuteness comes in all forms – including silly faces. When I see my children day to day they’re not sparkly clean with hair brushed, sitting at a posed angle, smiling at me – I see moody, mad, sad, giggly and slightly crazy. By letting them play and resisting the urge to say ‘Cheese’ or ‘Smile at the Camera’ they’ll express themselves the best way they know how and if that’s a silly face – well, that’s their character shining through which is just as cute as a smiley face.

Every family session is a workout for me, I run around, get down on the ground, climb fences and tree stumps to capture cuteness. Chasing kids around for photographs is hard work. It’s a good idea to run around first to burn off some of their energy – they’ll be more inclined to sit on a log, a blanket or upturned crate for a while and that’s the opportunity for some more contemplative images - keep talking and shooting – you don’t know how long it will be before they’re off again!

A child’s perspective Children see their world from a different perspective – to capture the world the way they see it 2-3 feet off the ground is about where you need to be, though if you’re like me, you may need someone to help you back up again!

Props Staring at a camera isn’t comfortable for anyone and won’t result in natural images either. Children love to play so grab their favourite toy or if you’re out and about I use what’s around me and just give them a simple instruction along the lines of ‘hold this branch down and see if you can spot the bird in the tree’.

They’ll be so busy playing with their prop or looking for the bird they’ll forget the camera long enough for you to get some non-posed natural shots.

Remembrance Sunday

Free admission to the D-Day Museum to mark the occasion.

30-minute talks at 12pm and 2pm: "D-Day - The Last of the Liberators." Plays at 3pm and 4pm: "Five Beaches" tells the story of the landing at Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944 using veterans’ words where possible. The play is a fast paced, stylised piece of theatre performed by an allmale ensemble that follows the soldiers across the channel and onto the approaches of each of the five landing beaches in Normandy. A Magical Candlelit Walk

Where’s Santa?

Up in the clouds at Spinnaker Tower

Pop along to Spinnaker Tower this festive season and meet Santa who will be flying in on select dates in December.

Meet the man himself on the view decks 100 metres above Portsmouth Harbour and tell him what’s on your Christmas wish list.

At Santa’s Christmas Wonderland, children and parents can wander through a magical winter scene where animated characters, including Rudolph and Donner the reindeer, sing and dance.

The amazing land allows youngsters to meet with Santa’s elves, working hard in the toy factory. To make the journey truly magical; children can meet Santa Claus himself and receive an exciting present.

Festive treats will be available in the Waterfront Café and Café in the Clouds on View Deck 2 for visitors to enjoy refreshments surrounded by the crisp winter views.

Soaring proudly above Portsmouth’s historic harbour, the Spinnaker Tower is one of the South coast’s ‘must-see’ attractions, commanding the attention of all who encounter it with its stunning architecture. Join Santa as you steam on a magical one hour round trip through the scenic Hampshire countryside as he visits you in your seat!
