Welcome to Families magazine! I am very excited to be publishing my first issue as new editor of the magazine and hope that I can continue in Eleanor’s footsteps to deliver the most relevant news and useful listings to local families. Putting the Sept/Oct issue together has made me realise how lucky we are to live in such a thriving area, full of fantastic attractions, great schools, beautiful open spaces and strong communities. Children throughout the country are being asked to don their pyjamas to help raise money for The Children’s Trust, the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury. Humphrey’s Pyjama Week returns this year from 5th-9th October and nurseries, playgroups, primary schools and mother & toddler groups can all get involved. For a voluntary donation of £2, youngsters, staﬀ and parents can wear their favourite PJs for a day during the week and organise themed events such as best-dressed competitions and slumber party games. News New Leisure Centre Opens in September The much-anticipated new leisure centre serving Banstead and Tadworth is due to open in late September. The £10.5m complex is just a stones throw from the current Banstead Sports Centre and is the centre piece of a regeneration of the local area, which has included a new children’s play area and skate park in Merland Rise Rec Ground. The newlynamed Tadworth Leisure and Community Centre will be a Centre of Excellence for trampolining and basketball, and will oﬀer a wide range of sporting clubs and activities for local families. Facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool,

teaching pool, 5-a-side pitches, dance studio, Ofsted registered crèche, café, sports hall and state of the art gym. The centre will also adjoin the new facility for the Pheonix Youth Centre, which oﬀers young people a chance to gain life skills in cookery, health and CV writing. Rubbish on Box Hill? No Way #CleanMV

New classes to help children overcome their fear of dogs launch in Reigate and Horley. New voluntary group From Fear to Friend invites local children aged 5-11 to spend time in the company of dogs and overcome any anxiety they have around our four-legged friends. Run by local dog trainer Ann Cook, the classes allow children to spend time with dogs in a supervised environment, with activities including grooming, walking and the Reading2Dogs initiative. One mum said “My daughter took part much more than I had hoped for. It’s given her so much more confidence already and she can’t wait for the next session.” There are 7 dogs in the project, all vetted for their temperament and obedience – including Freya the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Boris the handsome black Labrador. Mole Valley District Council recently launched its Keep it Clean campaign with 120 volunteers lying on the ground to spell out the hashtag for the new campaign #CleanMV. The volunteers gathered at the local beauty spot to highlight the problem of littering, dog fouling, graﬃti, fly tipping and other anti-social behavior that spoils our enjoyment of the countryside. News National Adoption Week

Feeling Exhausted?

This year’s National Adoption week runs from 19-25 October. Adoption has been in the news recently, with the budget announcement that the government will be investing £30m in helping council’s speed up the adoption process, and support them with finding potential parents outside of their areas. It currently takes an average of 18-months for a child entering care to be adopted, and there are currently 3000 children in the UK waiting to find a permanent home.

We all know what it’s like to feel physically and mentally exhausted from a busy day at work or with the kids and coping with everything can be an everyday battle.

The theme of this year’s event is Too Old at 4? which highlights the diﬃculty in placing older children in new homes, as many of them are part of sibling groups, or may already have specific needs due to their circumstances. This year’s event is being run by First4Adoption, so if you’re considering adopting a child, please visit first4adoption.org.uk for more information.

Calling All Budding Photographers Canon cameras has teamed up with the British Red Cross for the 10th year to support the young person’s photography award at the annual Last year’s winning photo Humanitarian Citizenship Awards. Young people by Souvid Datta aged 17 and under are invited to capture a photograph on the theme of ‘Celebrating Your Community’. The winners (to be announced on Nov 24th) will win a Canon EOS 760D camera to sharpen up their skills. Children’s Centres Closures – Decision Postponed The future of Steppingstones Children’s Centres in Earlswood and Hurst Green & Holland are still uncertain as Surrey County Council further delays a consultation on whether the centres will close.

Strep B campaigner Fiona Padden sadly lost her newborn son Edward to Strep B when he was just 9 days old, and is now petitioning for a simple £11 test to be standard procedure for all mums-to-be on the NHS. Strep B is a normal bacteria carried by 20-30% of women without harm, but in some cases the infection is carried to the baby during labour, resulting in life threatening conditions like meningitis, and the death of one in 10 babies.

Originally the consultation into cuts in children’s services in Surrey was due last Spring, with proposed closures this Autumn, but the oﬃcial consultation period has yet to be set. The petitions against the closure of the centres now have over 1000 signatures, and are due to close on 31st August, but Earlswood centre manager Hilary Foster said that they would request that the petition be extended into the Autumn to gain as much support as possible. The centres are an essential service to young families in the local areas – oﬀering support, advice, courses and play sessions for new parents and children. Kiddicaru opens in September The brand new stateof-the-art Kiddicaru nursery will open this September, on the Watercolour estate in Redhill, adding a muchneeded new nursery facility to the area. Draw on the hairline in pencil and then paint with black paint. Cut out two semi circles for the eyes and with the felt tip pen draw on the eyes. Stick these onto the lid of the box. Use the felt tip pen to draw on the mouth and scar (you can give him a silly expression here!). With the pencil add shadow to his eyes and draw a nose. Use your finger to smudge it. STEP 2 Push a straw through a bead and cut to whatever length you want your bolts. Place the box on its side, use the PVA to glue the bolts in place. EDUCATION NEWS Redehall opens its Kip McGrath gates to the public Education Centre Redehall Preparatory School continues to go Opens in Reigate from strength to strength, with Reigate and Redhill’s first Education Centre opens this September, set up by long-standing local teacher, Sharon Richardson. Road safety charity Brake recently conducted a survey that revealed that only 25% of parents believed their child’s route to school was safe. Brake have launched the Go 20 campaign, encouraging drivers to slow down to 20mph in areas with a high number of pedestrians and cyclists. With almost half of the UK’s primary school children bring driven to school, Brake is encouraging parents to walk or cycle with their kids to keep fit and enjoy the benefits of being outdoors.

Polka Theatre writing competition for budding playwrights The Wimbledon-based children’s theatre is oﬀering kids the chance to have their own creations included in a new professionally staged Polka show opening in April 2016. In conjunction with the V&A’s Museum of Childhood archives, the theatre is asking children to write a story inspired by one of the photos in the museum’s collection. Stories can be submitted by schools or individuals and children can write their stories on their own, in pairs or groups. Garden Tips for Autumn Although the summer sunshine is starting to wane, your garden still has plenty to oﬀer, so here are a few tips on getting the most from it in these last few weeks. Now is the best time to plant spring flowering bulbs like daffodils. These bulbs like a sunny site with well-drained soil. It’s best to plant them in groups (about 6 bulbs) for an eﬀective show. For those growing pumpkins for Halloween, make sure that you sit the fruit on an old tile to prevent rot, and make sure any shading leaves are cut back to expose the fruit to the sun. Leave some seed heads standing over the winter. They provide a valuable food source to birds and important shelter for insects. Garden Game: Supply your child(ren) with an empty matchbox each and challenge them to see who can find and fit the most items in their box. All the items should be from the garden i.e. no loom bands! Visit the Surrey Hills Wood Fair this October Surrey Hills Wood Fair at Birtley House, near Guildford, takes place from 3-4th October in a stunning Surrey Hills woodland setting. A fantastic day out for all the family, The Wood Fair is free for children under 12 years. There are a variety of activities including coppice crafts and wood products, horse & wagon rides, bug hunts, children’s activities including tree climbing and zip wire and animal attractions. The Man in the Moon Theatre Company is providing a theatre tent with a programme of specially commissioned performances. Dogs on leads are welcome and parking is free. Pip’s Corner opens The British Wildlife Centre opened a new children’s play area during the summer, launched by actress Finty Williams and her mother Dame Judy Dench. The new activity area features an otter bank for climbing over and sliding down, a red squirrel skills area with stepping stones, log path and climbing frame for balancing, a watch tower for wonderful views of the deer park and a jumping pit.
