News A House for Morgan You may have heard about the crowdfunding campaign to raise money to help a Tadworth family move to a 3-bedroom house, where they can care for their son Morgan and his little brother Jenson. Morgan suffers with debilitating eczema, asthma, food and environmental issues and a life threatening kidney condition, and would desperately love his own garden and bedroom for his brother – giving his family the space to live as normal a life as possible. The campaign has already raised over £25,000 (at time of press) – with just £15k to go to reach their £40,000 goal.

App for Anxiety Anxiety Island is a new app for kids aged 4-13yrs who suffer from anxiety or phobias. Created by local family therapist Audrey Sandbank, who specialises in anxiety, allergies and adult twin pairs, the game is available for tablets from Android and Apple at £1.99. Audrey has had a long career in therapy, previously working for CAMS before running her own business. For more info email Audrey.sandbank@btinternet.com

The ‘CHAMPS Coaching Method’ is an achievement coaching system for young people, providing rapid results without the need for counselling or therapy. The East Surrey branch recently launched, run by mum Lucy Murphy, who has spent years working with children in performing arts & drama. Witnessing first-hand the struggles that kids and teens go through and the lack of confidence & resilience in many children, Lucy feels that there is a real need to help them overcome limitations. Attend group sessions, workshops and One-To-One coaching to help your child overcome their confidence and emotional challenges. Meet face-to-face or on Skype. champs-academy.co.uk/lucy-murphy

Babies & Toddlers S potlight on Febrile Convulsions and Seizures Did you know that 1 in 20 children experience febrile convulsions? Stacey from Daisy First Aid Guildford & Redhill explains why children have febrile convulsions and what to do if your little one experiences one….

What are they? The majority of parents have never heard of them unless they have witnessed their child have one or know someone that has. Most common in babies and children under the age of 5 years old, if a baby or a child get too hot - generally anything over 38 degrees, they can experience a seizure because their body is not able to cool them down sufficiently and their brain experiences an electrical disturbance as a result of the high temperature.

Signs of a febrile convulsion?

If your child is hot to touch and has a temperature over 38 degrees, a febrile seizure will follow 3 stages: 1. Stiffness in the limbs, arching back, whole body turning rigid 2. Physical convulsions - ranging from twitching limbs to uncontrolled jerky body movements, eyes rolled back, foaming at the mouth (sometimes blood tinged), locked jaw 3. Exhaustion - whole body stops moving and child becomes excessively sleepy and limp AS SEEN ON

MAKE YOUR CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT MORE FUN!

DISCOVER RUGBYTOTS

Our dynamic weekly play sessions enable boys and girls aged 2–7 to develop their social and physical skills in a fun, positive environment. For more details, just call or email:

What should I do? Firstly, it is worth remembering that these convulsions are perfectly safe and on their own, they cause no lasting effect or damage for your child. Although it might be distressing as a parent to watch, if you follow the below steps, they are likely to be fine. • While the convulsions take place, keep the child still and safe from hurting themselves, don’t re-strain them in any way. Use cushions to stop them banging against any hard surfaces/edges. • Time the seizure - it should not last longer than 5 minutes, call an ambulance if it does or if they start another seizure shortly after one has ended. • After the seizure, strip them off and get them cooled down with lots of natural airflow, as quickly as possible. • Call an ambulance if it is their first ever seizure and put them into recovery position while you wait for an ambulance.

Babies & Toddlers Looking after Mum Until you’ve had your own child or perhaps a family or friend has become a Mum, the chances are you will not have heard of a Doula (doo-la). So who are they and why you might need one? The word doula comes from the ancient Greek meaning 'Mothering the Mother'. Traditionally, a woman gives birth and the women in the family rallies round to help her. However, modern living can mean families live apart, partners work abroad, people move around, and people are much more time-poor. For some, the support is simply not there. Doulas are often not medical people but they are there to compliment the professionals. They provide unconditional and flexible support to primarily mum - and to the rest of the family, whatever that may look like. There are two types of doulas: a birth doula that supports through pregnancy and is present at the birth; and a postnatal doula who’s aim is to make a difference in those first few weeks and months after the baby comes home. So what can you expect from a postnatal doula? Broadly the support covers two areas. Firstly, emotional support, we all need it! Whether it be talking through your birthing experience, getting to the root of an anxiety, or simply being in your corner. The second type of support is practical. Research shows a doula present at the birth can reduce labour time, and they can also offer help with feeding - bottle or breast (if you are breastfeeding there is a greater likelihood of feeding being successfully established - Midwifery Digest). Doulas provide baby-care and let mum get some sleep or take a shower whilst baby is looked after. Mums often focus on their baby and forget about themselves, so we’re there to make sure they get the right nutrition and goodness. Doulas can also help with siblings if needed and share tips and ideas.

Health

Looking after those little toothy-pegs The British Dental Association (BDA) says that the number of children having annual dental checkups has fallen to an all-time low. They also said that 40% of children did not have a checkup last year. ‘Classes in the Reigate and surrounding areas from September’

Checkups are a vital way to prevent tooth decay. Poor dental health can lead to children needing fillings and extractions and tooth decay is one of the main reasons children need to visit the hospital. The BDA suggests that children should see a dentist at least once a year. Between 2014 and 2015, there was a 10% increase in children needing hospital admission. The BDA’s chair Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen said "It's clear we have a problem when one in three children are missing out on free dental treatment... These numbers are a national embarrassment, and will not budge until ministers change tack." He also commented: "We need a concerted effort to get parents, health professionals and government on the same page." If your little one is a toothbrush dodger, here are some 5 tips from Dentyl on how to get them to look after their teeth.

Make tooth brushing fun Try and turn brushing sessions into a time of fun by playing music, providing exciting toothbrushes that light up and play music, or create a game around brushing their teeth. Use tasty toothpastes and offer rewards! Choose a good pediatric dentist Take your children to a

recommended pediatric dentist used to dealing with nervous little ones from a young age, so they can get used to regular visits. Ask your dentist to use positive phrases such as ‘clean, strong, healthy teeth’ rather than scary words such as ‘fillings,’‘decay,’ and ‘drilling.’ This will really help with helping to encourage your little one into the dentist chair.

Give your child the authority to choose FREE TRIAL CLASS 07783138348

jo@inspireacademyofdance.co.uk

Most kids love the feeling of being in control and having the power to decide what they want to do, so how about presenting your child with a few different toothpastes and toothbrushes at each brushing session and giving them the option to choose for themselves? If you’ve got competitive siblings, turn toothbrushing into a race – who can brush the longest?

Turn regular trips to the dentist into fun days out

Take your children to the dentist at least once every 6 months and try and include a visit to soft play or maybe the cinema before or after the appointment, so they learn to associate such visits with memorable fun times.

Beware of the tooth monster If all else fails, try telling your curious little humans an educational yet compelling bedtime story about how the naughty ‘sugar bugs’ can make holes in their teeth if they are not magically ‘zapped’ away by powerful superhero-esque toothbrushes. A little exaggeration never hurt anyone… Encourage your kids to use Dentyl Active - a double action mouthwash composed of an antibacterial Cetylpyridinium Chloride (CPC) and natural essential oils that magically mix together and enable your children to see the pesky debris and bacteria they've destroyed when they spit it out in the sink! The little guide to little bilingual brains Infants and young children have an impressive capacity for learning languages. They are curious, very eager to communicate and their brains are designed for fast learning. Bilingual families have an interesting opportunity to make the most of these early learning capacities in teaching their children two languages from birth.

What are the advantages? Bilingualism does not cause language delays.

Bilingual children usually learn two languages at the same pace as monolingual children are learning one. For example, bilinguals say their first words and start combining words into sentences at the same age as monolinguals. They may sometimes appear to know less words, but this is usually because their vocab is divided between two languages.

Learning two languages encourages children to think about languages.

Young monolinguals might struggle to recognise that ‘caterpillar’ is a bigger word than ‘whale’ because they find it difficult to dissociate a word from its meaning. Bilingualism attracts children’s attention to language itself, making children more aware of the sounds, words and regularities in languages. This also gives them a head start in school when learning phonics.

Bilingualism might make your child better at multi-tasking or listening to someone speaking in a noisy environment. When speaking one of their languages, bilinguals must inhibit the impulse to use

words in their other language. To achieve this task, they activate parts of their brain involved in cognitive control. This extra practice at controlling their own thoughts may lead to a ‘bilingual advantage’ in certain cognitive tasks.

Mastering two languages will give children a better understanding of their family’s cultural background. Being bilingual helps children become ‘bicultural’, making them more aware of cultural differences and more likely to take part in two cultures.

So, how we can live as a bilingual family? Maximise face-to-face communication – it is the

motor of language learning and early experience is key. Making sure you talk to your baby as much as possible, and involving your child in as much conversation as possible will lead to better abilities in one, two or more languages.

Have a plan. It is important to think about what ‘bilingualism’ means for your family. Would you like your child to have a basic understanding of another language? Are you hoping for your child to be fluent in two languages? Or read and write in two different languages? Make sure you provide plenty of experience for your child to achieve each of these goals. One parent may decide to use one language when addressing their child, while the other parent will use a different language. Think of the language(s) you want to use when reading to your child or singing to them. Keep it fun. Your child’s motivation to learn each of their languages will make a huge difference to their

Early Years achievement. The main focus should be on what is being said and not how it is being said.

Find role models. One way

of keeping their motivation up, may be to involve people who are not fluent in your child’s dominant language. This may encourage them to use a language they are less comfortable in. It will also show them that this language is spoken by people other than mum and/or dad. Children will also learn a lot from other children - they will want to speak like them and adopt their accent and expressions. Offering a bilingual environment to your child is a richness they will benefit from

all their life. They may not only learn two languages, but also a new way of thinking about cultural diversity. Do not be afraid of making the most of their incredible language learning abilities!

Nursery Nurseries provide childcare in a group setting to children of a similar age group. The nursery staff are trained to create a fun and happy environment for your child to play and develop in a group. This can help them gain confidence and develop social skills.

Deciding which childcare options are best for your family

The age range of nursery enrolment varies from each nursery, starting from birth to 4 years old. If you're on a low income, you may be able to claim tax credits to help towards the cost of childcare. All 3-4 years old are eligible to 10-16 hours free childcare per week, which will also help to offset your childcare costs. One of the main cons is that if your child is sick, they cannot attend nursery. Also, nurseries have opening and closing hours which is an issue if you work late (or shifts). The nursery may also close for holiday periods, which means you would need to ensure you have alternative childcare options in case of any of these eventualities.

Nanny

Nannies provide one-to-one care for your child in your family home, which allows for plenty of attention and stimulation for your child to develop. Having childcare in your home allows your child to adjust more gradually to you returning to work along with the familiarity of being at home with all their own toys and routines. If you work long hours, a nanny will be more flexible than other childcare providers as they can do the homework, dinner and bedtime. All nannies should have a valid police check undertaken on them (DBS) and would have a background in childcare.

Childminder Childminders are registered to care for only six children younger than 8 years old (including their own

Although employing a nanny is expensive and you could look into the option of a nanny share with another family. If your nanny is Ofsted registered, you can use childcare vouchers to help offset the cost of paying for a nanny. Manjit Shah is a director of Buttons Nanny Agency www.buttonsnannyagency.com

As the children can be of varying age, it means your child would benefit from mixing with children of different ages. One of the main cons is not all childminders collect children from school/ nursery. Childminders are inspected regularly to ensure that they provide good quality care.

child). Only three of these should be 5 years old or younger, and only one should be under 1 year old. The number of children the childminder may have will be dependent on the size of her home and if she employs an assistant.

NUTFIELD DAY NURSERY Nutfield

The family-run Nutfield Day Nursery takes pride in offering children a secure and stimulating environment in which they can grow in confidence and potential. Based on the forest school model, the 56-place nursery is set in an old vicarage with expansive grounds in which the children learn, play and explore daily. They have a belief that there is no such thing as bad weather – just bad clothing! The nursery works very closely with parents to make sure that they have a good understanding of the values and expectations of each family, and make an effort to get to know not just the kids, but their wider family and siblings too. The nursery operates a 7am-7pm day and early years entitlement is accepted as part of a 3-day week. To arrange a viewing call 01737 822014 nutfieldnursery.co.uk

Open their imaginations You might have already heard people raving about new creative play centre Imagineville in Charlwood, but if not, here’s the lowdown on what you can expect. Imagineville is the brainchild of Horley mum and former teacher, Kate Phillips. After meeting other local parents at various networking groups, it became clear that there was a demand for something a bit more interactive than soft play for kids in the local area. Imagineville opened in November and is a stimulating space where parents and carers can play and learn with their children. Play spaces include a café, shop, construction site, beauty salon, dressing up and a medical centre, where kids can role play and use their imaginations. This is not a place to sit and drink coffee while your kids run wild – it’s about encouraging adults and kids to interact (they even supply tip sheets with play ideas!). The 90min sessions run on Sat, Sun, Mon & Wed between 9.30am-3pm and cost £5 per child. It’s limited to 10 children per session, to allow space to move freely, and light refreshments are available. Kate has got big ideas for the future of the business, already planning Imagineville Moves pop-ups for next Summer! To book visit facebook.com/imagineville

Education Take the fear out of We all know that the lead up to exam season can be a daunting and stressful time for child and parent. With children encountering phonics screening checks, teacher assessments and SATs by the time they reach the end of primary school, you might wonder how best to support your child through exams - and you certainly aren’t alone! In a recent, independent study by Explore Learning, while 90% of British parents said exam results are important to their child’s future, only 1 in 4 parents felt their child’s exam performance actually reflects their true ability, and 2 in 3 parents admitted that their child has suffered from exam stress. Although there is no magic formula for exam success, there are many ways to help children feel prepared and confident about assessments. Here are a few top tips:

Exams

Plan ahead – This is the key to kickstarting any successful exam preparation. Blocking out periods of time to ‘cram’ for an exam might save time but it won’t assist your child’s retention of information long term. Revisiting a range of subject areas in manageable, weekly chunks can be much more beneficial to supporting memory, skills, and confidence. Find the right way for your child - It is important to understand that everyone learns and revises in their own way. Some children like to visualise their work, so sticky notes around the house and visual representations might be useful, whereas others will respond better to you asking them questions and to explain a paragraph in their own words. Some children will switch on bright and early, while others will be ready to learn later on in the day. Find

What are SATS?

If you’re new to the school system, or haven’t experience them before, the term SATS can seem a bit daunting. So what exactly are they? SATS are national exams that children sit at the end of Yr 2 (Key Stage 1) and Yr 6 (Key Stage 2). KS1 tests are in maths and English and are teacher assessed. KS2 exams are in maths, English & science and are a mix of teacher assessed and externally marked.

the learning style and pattern that works for your child, with their input, and create a plan to suit their individual need. Positive thinking - Finally, be sure to remain positive throughout exam preparations and praise them when you see them accomplish something great: hearing things like “brilliant reading” or “you’ve done a fantastic job explaining that method to me” will undoubtedly build their self-belief. Explore Learning Centres, are available to support both you and your child from day one. As well as tailored maths & English tuition from expert staff, they run relevant workshops and parent information evenings for families throughout the year so that everyone feels as confident as possible at home, especially when exams are around the corner! The Grammar School Debate Is your child taking an 11+ exam in this month? We are fortunate in Surrey to have some of the most successful Grammar schools in the country (both state and independent), but places are highly competitive with up to 10 entries per place. The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide recently ranked Reigate Grammar School in the top 50 independent co-educational schools in the country – making it the top co-ed independent school in Surrey. With Education minister Justine Greening making a pledge last Sept to increase the size of Grammar schools and to encourage new schools to apply to select pupils by ability, it looks like pupil selection for secondary education will become the norm over the next few years. So where can you get that coaching and tutoring help you might need?

Education Redehall Closes Doors

Exceptional hammock made by Albie (age 16).

It is with regret that Redehall Prep School in Smallfield closed its doors for the last time at the end of the Autumn term. The school originally opened in the mid 1800’s and has run as a church school, a village school and prep, as well as accommodating evacuees during the war. The school has closed due to a decline in pupil numbers over the past few years, making it impossible to run successfully.

Reigate Schools move to Academies A group of Reigate & Redhill-based schools, Dover Green Infants, Reigate Priory Junior School, Holmesdale Infants, Wray Common Primary, St John’s Primary and Reigate School (secondary) have formed a multi-academy trust. Called The Greensand Academy Trust, the collaboration will allow the schools to have more autonomy over their own budgeting and planning, as well as sharing ideas and initiatives. The move will not affect the admissions procedures for Sept 2017 intake.
