The UK’s largest citizen wildlife survey, the Big Garden Birdwatch, will take place from 23rd–25th January 2026, the RSPB has announced. Now in its 47th year, the event invites people of all ages to spend one hour counting the birds they see in their gardens, balconies, or local parks, and submit their sightings online.

In 2025, more than 590,000 people took part, recording over 9.1 million birds. The house sparrow retained its’ top spot as the most commonly sighted species, followed by the blue tit and woodpigeon.

Organisers say even reporting ‘no birds’ is valuable, as it helps track long term population changes.

Launched in 1979 with the help of children’s TV programme Blue Peter, the Birdwatch has grown into a national tradition. The RSPB says the survey highlights both declines and recoveries in common species, and shows the power of communities coming together for nature. More info: 🌐 rspb.org.uk

Embrace Reading on World Book Day

Help your child celebrate a love of reading on World Book Day, Thursday 5th March. Spark your child’s imagination and encourage them to read for pleasure and join in nationwide activities designed to make books exciting.

Schools will distribute special £1 book tokens that children can swap for exclusive new titles or put towards any book in participating shops. Many schools also will invite students to dress up a favourite characters and host reading-related events.

Children’s Booker Prize Announced The Booker Prize Foundation has unveiled the Children’s Booker Prize, a major new award celebrating contemporary fiction for children ages 8 to 12. Supported by the AKO Foundation, the prize launches this year, with the first winner announced in February 2027.

The award carries a £50,000 prize for the winning author, equal to the adult Booker Prize and aims to inspire a new generation of readers at a time when children’s reading for pleasure is at its lowest in twenty years. A shortlist of eight books will be announced in November, with at least thirty thousand copies of shortlisted and winning titles gifted to children across the UK and Ireland.

A Baa-rilliant Lambing Line-up this Half Term Visitors to Odds Farm Park will be able to welcome the pitter-patter of tiny hooves into the world as the Bucks-based leisure attraction gets ready to deliver its annual lambing event.

Love and Lambs kicks off on Saturday 14th February and runs throughout the half term until Sunday 22nd February. More than 25 ewes are ready to give birth over the week-long school holiday with many expecting twins or triplets.

Louise Winslow, assistant general manager at Odds Farm Park, said: “Our event gets underway on Valentine’s Day so it seemed fitting we should be celebrating both love and lambs this February. Our lovely pregnant ewes are currently in our maternity wing where they are being cared for and monitored by our team of shepherds. We are expecting more than 50 little ones to be born over the half term break.”

Love will also be in the air at the Odds’ Craft Barn where younger guests can enjoy making heart-themed crafts to keep or give to someone special. There is also plenty of weather-proof fun at Odds Farm Park in the indoor soft play barn, while outside there is the outdoor adventure play and Marmalade’s Mini Golf course. Days Out Junior Reporters Hampton Court Palace

Amersham House

Towering before me, was an ancient, historic building with crenellations, statues and decorative chimney pots. It was built

by Cardinal Wolsey who transformed a country house into this remarkable landmark which became the home of Henry VIII. I was at Hampton Court Palace in London!

Amersham Museum may be smaller than most others, but it does not disappoint! Filled with artefacts from different time periods, it’s an historical adventure. The main house is an approximately 500-year-old Tudor building and the site also includes a Victorian house, which was purchased later on. The Museum gives an insight into life in Amersham during five different time periods: 1580, 1775, 1892, 1939 and 1964.

I began my visit in the royal kitchens. I learnt that Henry VIII had 800 courtiers and that they all had to be fed!

The kitchens served 1,600 meals a day. One of them had a huge log fire. I stood next to it because it was cold outside!

My favourite room was the Great Hall, lined with stag heads. I sat on a throne next to a person dressed as Henry VIII as I was lucky enough to visit on a special day when there were actors walking around. I squeezed into a chair with my sister and felt rather royal!

I walked along a haunted gallery with ornate pictures. It is said the ghost of Catherine Howard, one of Henry’s wives, ran along the corridor screaming for mercy when she heard Henry VIII was going to execute her.

The King’s staircase was added when King William III came to the throne. The ceiling was painted by an Italian artist. It was amazing! I also stood where Henry VIII would have sat in the Royal Chapel where he had the best view! There was a replica of his crown nearby.

The palace has large gardens where we had a picnic. There was also a maze where you could have a lot of fun!

When I walked in, the first thing I noticed was a small gift shop, along with some old signs for a dentist and a company called Brazil’s, a sausage and pie making factory, where lots of people in Amersham worked in 1939.

As I started my journey into the main house, I found out lots of interesting information about Amersham throughout the centuries and how it has developed into today’s streets. My favourite part was 1964, as I loved looking at the samples of the popular cosmetics brand, Goya, a major employer at the time. It was interesting seeing the packaging, adverts and scents and see how they compared to today’s brands. Another feature I enjoyed was the ‘Time Quiz’. After you finished reading about each time period, there was a small quiz to test your knowledge.

Upstairs in the Tudor mansion, there was a dining table laid out with food that people would have eaten during that period. I really enjoyed the Amersham Museum and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves history!

This issue Rachel Bailey interviews none other than MC Grammar, aka Jacob Mitchell, whose passion for both teaching and music, make him a man on a mission to bring reading to life with his book rap-filled events and YouTube channel. He is also writing a series of books for readers aged 7+yrs, the first of which The Adventures of Rap Kid was recently published.

My son loved your involvement in Young Voices at the O2. How did you go from being a teacher, to the popular guest act performing in front of thousands of school children?

Thank you! To be honest this whole adventure has been pretty organic, evolving as I have grown as an educator. Like all good teachers, I just went where the learning took me to do my best for my class. Early on in my teaching career, I realised how important it is to engage with the children in your class and immediately saw the positive impact my raps had. For me, that was a gamechanger! Music is emotive and powerful — instantly the children remembered the words, understood the work and importantly had fun learning. From there, one rap turned into an album, a TV show and a performance on stage at the O2! Wild! A journey that is forever growing (and surprising me). I am so grateful and can’t wait to see what the future has in store.

It’s a fantastic approach that is really resonating with children, but how do you get them to go from rapping about grammar and enjoying your YouTube videos, to picking up an actual book?

Well for starters, you can’t rap a book if you can’t read a book. You can’t write a rap if you don’t have words!

Words are your weapons as a rapper.

I always say to children that words give your thoughts a voice. The more you know, the more the world will hear your wonder and where’s the greatest place to absorb a world of words? Books! They are a portal to anywhere and everywhere. Another life, another mind, a different place and a different time. Plus, more words means more rhymes, and more rhymes means more lines for you to shine! Simply said: a book is the coolest tool for you to grow as a reader, a rapper and a leader of your life.

Your rap reads are a great way to encourage young readers. How important is it to champion a love of reading?

Reading is the greatest gift! A dream that you hold in your hand, for books give us an insight into another life, or an adventure from another time.

Through reading and a love of books, a child can live a thousand lives and answer a thousand whys. They are not just knowledge — books give us so much more: empathy and understanding; a walk in someone else’s shoes, a place to escape to, or a friend to always rely on. They are a portable magic that exercises the mind, brings us together and opens up the world to you, right in the palm of your hand.

You’ve described your new book The Adventures of Rap Kid, as “similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid. but slightly more street.” What can young readers (and their parents) expect from this series?

First of all, lots of laughs and raps!

I have also written the book for the reader to join Z on the Rap Kid journey, so it’s very interactive. There are raps to try out, outfits (drip) to pick and lots of cool rap slang words to get your head around. Don’t get me wrong, like any story there are some sad moments, but there are also lots of happy moments too… oh, and a really cool twist! Put it this way: it’s an epic adventure and by the time you finish the book, you might just become a rapper too!

Having been a World Book Day Ambassador, do you have any advice/ ideas for busy parents who dread making costumes? (asking for a friend)

reading for pleasure brings. I think more and more educational settings are realising this with lots of super cool ideas for the day: decorate a potato, make a mask etc. However, if you want to dress up and really make that effort, I recommend planning in advance to make sure you have enough time to create your outfit. Something original, or just a small nod to your book/ character always works well and then the fun begins when you get to ask people to try and guess who you are.

Whatever you do on WBD, enjoy the magic moments with a good book!

The ideal window for STEM learning

There’s a short window in childhood when curiosity runs wild, and the way we respond can shape how our kids learn forever.

By Matt Newnham When children first step into school, they bring with them an unstoppable stream of curiosity. Why is the sky blue? How do birds fly? What happens if I mix these paints? For parents and teachers, it can feel relentless. Yet within those questions lies something essential. The years between ages 5 and 9 are when children form the attitudes that shape how they see the world, how they see themselves as learners and how they will approach science and maths for the rest of their lives.

Why does this matter so much?

Because science and maths are not simply school subjects – they are life skills. Science teaches us to question, to seek evidence and to change our minds when evidence changes.

Maths teaches us to see patterns, to plan and to reason logically.

The window of curiosity UNESCO1 and the OECD2 have long argued that building scientific literacy early is essential for the future. The children of today will face challenges we can only guess at: climate change, new technologies and social change. A generation confident in science and maths will be better equipped to meet those challenges. It is about creating citizens who can think critically, solve problems and adapt. The habits of mind built between ages 5 and 9 will carry into adulthood.

The psychologist Jean Piaget³ described children ages 5 to 9 as moving from imaginative thinking into logical thinking. At age 5, children may still believe the moon is following them home. By age 9, they begin to understand orbits, shadows and gravity. This shift is not just about facts. It is about the development of a way of thinking, a move from magic to mechanism, while still holding onto imagination.

Confidence is built early Children between ages 5 and 9 are at their most curious and least self-conscious. They ask questions without worrying about being wrong. They explore without fear of failure.

This is why researchers at King’s College London4 and the Institute of Education point out that attitudes to science and maths often solidify before age 10. By the end of primary school, many children have already decided whether they are ‘good at’ or ‘bad at’ these subjects.

This decision is rarely based on ability. It is based on confidence and on how people respond to their questions.

Imagine a child who builds a tower of blocks. It falls. They try again. It falls again. They laugh, rebuild and eventually succeed. They have just practised the essence of scientific thinking: test, fail, try again, succeed. If an adult scolds or rushes them, they learn frustration. If an adult celebrates their persistence, they learn resilience.

The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA)5 has shown through multiple studies that early exposure to positive experiences in science and maths builds lasting confidence. The opposite is also true. A child who hears parents say: ‘I was never good at maths,’ or ‘science is too hard,’ absorbs that belief. By age 7, those beliefs can become fixed. Yet science is creative and maths rewards persistence.

Anyone can enjoy these subjects if given space to play, explore and make mistakes.

Confidence is not about getting the right answer every time. It is about believing that problems can be solved, that experiments are worth trying and that effort is valuable.

Between ages 5 and 9, mistakes should be celebrated.

A wrong answer is not a failure. It is a step towards understanding. When children see adults laugh at a failed experiment or cheer at a messy attempt, they learn that learning is about the journey, not just the result.

What can parents do?

The most powerful thing parents can do is show interest.

A child who sees their parent curious and open to learning learns that curiosity is valuable.

Explore questions together. Instead of rushing to answer, ask: ‘What do you think?’

Use daily life. Cooking, shopping, gardening and travelling all contain maths and science.

Read stories with STEM themes. Adventure tales can deliver scientific concepts in fun ways.

Model positive talk. Replace ‘I can’t do maths’ with ‘Let’s work it out together.’

In the golden window when children decide whether they are explorers or avoiders, adults hold the power to guide them towards curiosity, confidence and joy.

Preparing your child for exams

By Gail Hugman We all went through exams to get where we are today and know that the experience can be challenging. With exam results affecting school and university choices, it is worth helping our children prepare so they get the best results.

Many parents choose to tutor their children, which can be useful if they are lacking in content or need extra practice but what else can you do to help? Preparing yourself is as important as preparing your child!

Whether it is 7+, 11+, 13+, SATs or CATs, download an example of the exam papers from either the government website for SATs or the schools you are applying to. In this way, you and your child will know what to expect.

Many children become ‘free readers’ between the ages of 6 and 7 years. They are thought to be ‘good readers’ because they decode and say all the words correctly. But comprehension requires a set of skills that develop after a child has learned to decode.

Helping a dyslexic child prepare for SATs/11+:

Your child may need to be reminded that what they’re being taught in school in English, maths and reasoning especially, is going to help them when they sit the exams, so they need to listen carefully and concentrate in lessons.

A child is a good reader when they read fluently with expression (they respond to punctuation appropriately to do this), they know the main point of the text, they can infer (read between the lines), they can identify similes and metaphors and they can summarise.

Many children also need to be told that if they don’t understand the lesson, they need to ask their teacher for help. Check your child feels confident to do that. Many don’t because they are worried about ‘what other children will say,’ so remind them that you’re there to help and can ask on their behalf.

Written comprehension requires them to read a passage in a given time (5-10 minutes), work out how the writer makes it scary/funny/sad (analyse), say what a character’s behaviour means (interpret), recognise what season it is from the description given (infer) and make a sensible suggestion for what happens next (predict).

Exams are always timed but it’s difficult for a child to know how much they can do in a certain length of time! To help them judge this more accurately, you can help them prepare by timing homework activities.

Firstly, check with your child’s teacher how long they are meant to spend on a piece of homework and give them that amount of time. If the work is not finished in that time, reflect on it with your child and ask them what they think they can do to speed up next time.

The most important thing that every parent can actually do to help their child, is to actively listen to them read at least three times each week, all the way up to 13+.

Your dyslexic child may be allocated extra time for exams but may need help to know what to do with it. Check how much time they have been allowed with the SEND teacher and ask what help they are being given to prepare.

When listening to them read, it helps if you ask: ‘Which words make it scary/sad/funny?’ ‘Why did that boy run away?’ ‘How do you know…?’ ‘What will happen next?’

What's Really going on?

By Dr Sam Hinds, Educational and Child Psychologist, Building Blocks Educational Psychology, based in Buckinghamshire.

What is EBSNA? Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance (EBSNA) is not a diagnosis, but instead a term used to describe the presentation of a child, or young person, who has reduced or non-attendance at school due anxiety or emotional distress. This may present at any educational age. Early recognition and support are important in reducing the emotional distress experienced.

What are the signs?

A child may be visibly distressed at drop-off or unable to enter the building, making it easy to recognise that the child is struggling; however, often EBSNA is more subtle.

For example, the child is in school but struggling to remain in class, or the child appears calm and compliant due to masking their anxiety during the school day, but once home experiences emotional distress such as outbursts, difficulties with eating or sleeping, or anxiety before/after school.

It is important to distinguish EBSNA from occasional reluctance, such as not wanting to attend an exam or preferring a different activity. EBSNA is an emotional response preventing a child from being able to, even when they want to; they can’t, rather than won’t.

The factors contributing to EBSNA are often complex and unique to the individual. They may include: school factors e.g. learning, friendship, sensory or environmental challenges; home factors e.g. caring responsibilities, bereavement or worries about loved ones; underlying mental health needs; or unmet Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND).

Although well-intentioned, adult responses to a child with EBSNA can inadvertently heighten distress. For example, physically guiding a child away from their parent, telling the child they are ‘being silly’, or sanctioned non-attendance.

If these actions were done to an adult, they would be likely to fight back or refuse to comply. Children typically have less autonomy over the expectations on them than adults; whilst also having fewer skills and less experience of using strategies to regulate themselves, requiring more support to return to a regulated state.

This response can be explained through understanding the human stress response to perceived threat – often known as ‘fight, flight or freeze’. This is automatic and outside conscious control. The child cannot ‘calm down’ or ‘think rationally,’ they need support to calm their nervous system through co-regulation, where a calm and attuned adult helps them return to a regulated state.

How can we support a child experiencing EBSNA? Communicate with your child’s school or nursery about your concerns, explore support in line with local authority guidance.

Ensure good home-school communication (e.g. a communication book noting observations or emotional triggers).

Remain curious about all potential contributing factors and focus on support to reducing emotional distress, rather than attendance related reward/consequence.

Reflect on what strategies have/haven’t helped, and what needs adapting.

Allow the child time to regulate with a trusted adult.

Anxiety/distress takes a while to dissipate, progressing too quickly can re-heighten anxiety.

Implement and review strategies tailored to the individual circumstances for that child, such as: • Transitional objects from home – comfort and reminder of being kept in mind by those at home.

• A reassurance call home during the day.

• RAG (Red, Amber, Green) rating a school map and staff list to identify ‘safe’ spaces and people.

Increasing access to these, (especially during distress).

The power of communication in sleep training

When we think about sleep training, many parents imagine routines, timings, or strategies. But one of the most important, (and often overlooked) tools is communication. Babies and toddlers may not understand every word we say, but they pick up so much from our tone, consistency and the way we guide them through transitions.

Why communication matters

Imagine being put down in your cot, or bed, without any idea what’s happening next. It would feel unsettling, wouldn’t it? Our little ones feel the same. By communicating with them, we’re helping them to understand what’s coming and reassuring them that they’re safe, even if things are changing.

Simple phrases such as, “It’s bedtime now. I’m here, it’s time to lie down and go to sleep” give children clarity. They learn what is expected and feel reassured that they’re not alone – even if you’re no longer rocking, feeding or holding them to sleep.

Communication builds trust

Sleep training is never about leaving a child to fend for themselves. It’s about shifting how we support them, and that shift is so much smoother when communication is at the heart of it. When you tell your little one what’s happening, you’re showing them that you see them, you’re listening, and you’ll still be there to comfort them just in a different way now.

A family I recently worked with...

I was supporting a family whose baby struggled to settle at bedtime. He would cry and resist lying down in his cot, and bedtime had become stressful for everyone. Together, we focused on communication. His mum began to calmly explain: “It’s bedtime now, I’d like you to lie down and go to

sleep. I’m here with you.” Within just a few nights, everything began to change. The baby started to relax, because he understood what was happening. Instead of confusion and resistance, he felt reassured by his mum’s calm words and tone. Bedtime became peaceful, and the whole family felt the difference.

Putting it into practice at home:

• Use the same phrases each night to create consistency.

• Speak gently and with reassurance – your tone matters as much as your words.

• Tell your little one what’s coming next, so they don’t feel taken by surprise.

• Remind them you’re still there, even if you’re supporting them in a new way.

When communication becomes part of your sleep approach, you’re not just teaching your child to sleep, you’re building a foundation of trust, connection and understanding that makes the whole process gentler for everyone.

Resolutions that stick for 2026

Plan with purpose A little planning goes a long way. Set aside time each Sunday to reset so you feel calmer and more in control of the week ahead.

Check the calendar, lay out uniforms and make a short to-do list. Pair it with a cup of tea, a podcast or a face mask, so it feels like self-care. Look at the bigger picture. Break your year into quarters and plan around family milestones. Avoid starting big projects in the busiest periods. Mapping goals to life’s rhythm makes them more achievable.

Double up on healthy habits Healthy habits can make life more fun. Meet a friend for a walk and takeaway coffee instead of sitting in a café, or catch up at the playground and do a few squats while pushing the children on the swing. Pair up with a friend to start a mini ‘cook-along club’ where you try a new healthy recipe each week or introduce a ‘vegetable of the week’ challenge. Pick a fruit or vegetable you don’t usually buy and find ways to add it to meals – it keeps healthy eating creative and fresh.

Greener living, simplified Going green can feel overwhelming, so make one easy sustainable swap each quarter. If you commit to changing just four things throughout the year, by the end of it your life will have improved in four tangible ways. Last year we got a builtin water filter, swapped to an eco-friendly detergent, replaced plastic bottles with stainless steel ones and started growing herbs. They’re small changes but they’ve made our home feel more aligned with the way we want to live.

Just move little and often Regular exercise is a way to care for your body and lift your mood. Think ‘little and often’ rather than ‘all or nothing.’ Walk the school run, take the stairs or park somewhere that adds a fifteen minute walk to your destination. Consider a fold-away treadmill or exercise bike that you can use while replying to emails or watching a film. Twenty minutes of steady movement is far more realistic than a rigid gym routine – and it still counts.

Change your self-talk Healthy living starts in your head, not your kitchen. Much of how we eat, move and care for ourselves depends on how we speak to ourselves. If your inner dialogue is self-critical, it’s time to change the script! Instead of focusing on what you shouldn’t eat, think about what will make you feel energised. Swap ‘I’ve ruined it’ for ‘I enjoyed that; now I’ll make my next choice a nourishing one.’ When you stop labelling food as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, you stop labelling yourself that way too.

Family check-ins Life is busy and real conversation can easily go by the wayside.

Eat together at least three evenings a week – no phones or screens – and ask everyone to share the best and worst part of their day. It keeps family life connected. Although big days out are wonderful, small, consistent moments through the week are just as powerful. This includes time with your partner. My spouse and I hug for twenty seconds every morning. It’s simple but effective and helps us reset and start the day as a team.
