2nd Edgware Cubs try their hand at den building. Social activities and outdoor adventure are at the heart of Scouting, and in a digital world the demand to join is only growing. “At 2nd Edgware we’re seeing more young people wanting to join Cubs than we have the adults for,” said Josh, one of the volunteer leaders. “With a few more adults we could clear our waiting list and really make a difference in the area.” Join the team at edgwarescouts.org.uk/volunteers

AD VERTIS EM EN T BOO KIN
Improving metacognition
By Usha Patel
AD VERTIS EM EN T BOO KIN G
Metacognition is ‘thinking about how you think’ and this self-analysis is the basis of self-improvement. So how do you help a child improve their way of thinking and engage in developing curiosity?
Ask more questions or allow silence to give them space to work it out for themselves. Parents who provide all the answers all the time are not letting their children think for themselves. We want to place the responsibility squarely in their hands. When they can’t find the butter in the fridge, behind the bowl of yesterday's evening meal, the call comes out "I can’t find the butter!" This needs to change, so YOU need to change. Don’t do things for them or provide answers until they have tried to work it out for themselves.
Physical ‘survival’ based activities. When survival is a factor, the brain switches on. Any activity which affects balance is something we have to think about carefully. We cannot do it routinely. This is why climbing is great for building metacognition. Each hand and foot position has consequences. This is critical thinking at its best. Afterwards, there is a lot of self-analysis. "Was I strong enough?", "How would I do this next time?" This is the metacognition we want to nurture. How does the ship get into the bottle? Puzzles which make you think but don’t burden the working memory are also good for building metacognition. I like to use simple Sudoku puzzles. Unlike a physical puzzle, with Sudoku, you see the steps taken to solve the puzzle and analyse them. You can then use this analysis next time. This helps build on the metacognition of how to solve the puzzle and how you think.

It's... Grammar
Families' own Rachel Bailey interviews MC Grammar aka Jacob Mitchell, whose passion for teaching and music, make him a man on a mission to bring reading to life with rap-filled events and a YouTube channel. The first in his series of books for 7+, The Adventures of Rap Kid, is out now.
My son loved your involvement in Young Voices at the O2. How did you go from being a teacher, to a popular guest act performing in front of thousands of school children? This whole adventure has been pretty organic, evolving as I have grown as an educator. Early on in my teaching career, I realised how important it is to engage with the children in your class and immediately saw the positive impact my raps had. For me, that was a gamechanger! Music is emotive and powerful — instantly the children remembered the words, understood the work and importantly had fun learning. From there, one rap turned into an album, a TV show and a performance on stage at the O2! Wild! A journey that is forever growing – and surprising me.
It’s a fantastic approach but how do you get them to go from rapping about grammar and enjoying your YouTube videos, to picking up an actual book?
Well for starters you can’t write a rap if you don’t have words! Words are your weapons as a rapper. I always say to children that words give your thoughts a voice and where’s the best place to absorb a world of words? Books! They are a portal to anywhere. Another life, another mind, a different place and a different time. Simply said: a book is the coolest tool for you to grow as a reader, a rapper and a leader of your life.
You’ve described your new book as “similar to Diary of a
Wimpy Kid but slightly more street.” What can young readers, and parents, expect?
Lots of laughs and raps! I have also written the book for the reader to join Z on the Rap Kid journey, so it’s very interactive. There are raps to try out, outfits (drip) to pick and lots of cool rap slang words to get your head around. Don’t get me wrong, like any story there are some sad moments, but there are lots of happy moments too…oh, and a really cool twist! Put it this way: it’s an epic adventure and by the time you finish the book, you might just become a rapper too!
Having been a World Book Day Ambassador, do you have any advice for busy parents who dread making costumes? Yes… don’t worry! WBD (6 March) isn’t about what you’re wearing. It's a day to celebrate the joy and magic that reading for pleasure brings. If you want to dress up, I recommend planning ahead. Whatever you do on WBD, enjoy the magic moments with a good book!

Board games, card games and multi-player computer games are great ways to connect with the kids, but if you want something more active, head to Activate.
Newly-opened at the O2, it's like a live action version of all those computer mini-games where you make a little character run around doing things but in this game you are the little character - jump on the right coloured lights, hit the coloured button when the snake is on it, avoid the "danger" floor area, dodge the lasers, aim the basketball at the asteroids. It's a lot of fun, and friendly staff are on hand to make sure you know what to do. With lots of game choices, there is plenty to explore.
