Banstead Prep recognised for ‘Significant Strength’

Children and staff at Banstead Prep School are celebrating after being recognised for its ‘significant strength’ in an ISI inspection, which described the school as ‘a community of happy, confident and mutually respectful young people.’

Inspectors observed strong academic achievement, noting that children ‘make good progress and attain highly in comparison to national expectations.’ attributing this to the ‘focus on supporting them to develop the right habits and attitudes to learn successfully such as adaptability, collaboration, curiosity, independence, leadership and resilience’, judged to be a ‘significant strength’.

Jon Chesworth, Headteacher, commented: “We are exceptionally proud of this outcome, which sets Banstead Prep apart from other schools in the local area and in the top 10% of ISI inspected schools.”

NHS urges families to think Pharmacy First

Parents of young children are being encouraged by the NHS to take advantage of services offered by their local pharmacies when they require help with minor illnesses or ailments instead of their GP.

The NHS Pharmacy First campaign aims to increase the public awareness of the breadth of support now offered by pharmacies on their doorstep.

The Pharmacy First service allows pharmacists to provide prescription medication for common conditions, including sinusitis (for those aged 12 and over), sore throat (for those aged 5 years and over), earache (for those aged between 1 and 17 years) and infected insect bite (for those aged 1 year and over) without the need for a GP appointment.

By expanding the services community pharmacies offer, the NHS is aiming to help free up GP appointments and give people more choice in how and where they access care.

Exciting times at Elmhurst School

These are exciting times for Elmhurst, the 155-yearold Prep School in South Croydon. After announcing a move to co-education in September 2024, Elmhurst goes from strength to strength with the opening of Little Elmhurst - its brand-new nursery for children aged 6 months to 4 years.

Opening on the 23 April, Little Elmhurst is situated next to Elmhurst School. The building has been completely refurbished with bright, spacious rooms and a large, secure outdoor area with plenty of space for children to learn and play. The location is perfect for working parents; it’s just a ten-minute walk from South Croydon Station or a short bus ride from East Croydon and the Nursery will be open from 8am-6pm, 51 weeks of the year.

Little Elmhurst Open Days are on Saturday 15 and 29 March: 10am -12noon. Whole School Open Morning is on Friday 7 March: 9.30am-12 noon.

London TKD is more than just a place to train - it’s a community built on discipline, dedication and perseverance. As the school year progresses, challenges can pile up, from academic pressure to physical exhaustion. This is when perseverance becomes essential.

In Taekwondo, progress doesn’t happen overnight; it requires consistent effort, pushing past mental and physical barriers. The same applies to school - whether struggling with exams, coursework, or motivation, persistence is what leads to success.

At London TKD, students learn that setbacks aren’t failures but opportunities to grow stronger. Every kick, form and sparring session builds resilience, reinforcing the mindset that hard work pays off. By staying committed, both in training and academics, students develop the perseverance at London TKD needed to overcome obstacles and any challenges that come their way!

Pastoral care in primary schools

News reports last year claimed there is a child with a suspected mental health concern in every primary school classroom in the country. Figures released by NHS England showed more than 165,000 children ages 6 to 10 were in contact with NHS mental health services at the end of February 2024, while the number of primary-age children in England either waiting or being treated for mental health problems, increased by over a quarter in less than a year.

The picture has never been starker and schools have a key part to play both in terms of prevention and providing expert support. The past twenty years has seen schools evolve from places where it was ‘brain first’ to spaces where body and mind are recognised as needing equal developmental attention.

Before anything else, a school should be a centre for care. Pastoral care encompasses a wide range of initiatives and approaches. A good primary school will embed pastoral care into all it does within the culture of the school: how it teaches, how it protects, how it listens and learns. A pastorally strong school is in the best position to thrive academically.

When they experience anxiety, children can’t access learning, making it crucial that all schools have a robust pastoral care

system to support pupils’ development. Simple measures like buddy benches, mindfulness lessons and worry boxes or mood charts are now widely offered and can make a big difference. Animals are good too. Some schools have a therapy dog and even class pets like goldfish or hamsters can help children open up.

A common thread running through primary schools with a strong pastoral offering seems to be plentiful opportunities for fresh air, physical exercise and being in nature. Even in some of the most space-pressed inner-city schools, children are cultivating a mini allotment or growing sunflowers in the playground. Similarly, Forest Schools offering regular outdoor hands-on learning sessions in natural environments, are building young children’s confidence and self-esteem.

Extra-curricular activities also play a role, fostering social engagement, personal development and a sense of belonging among pupils. An inclusive sporting ethos is often front and centre in schools with good pastoral care, particularly in the co-curricular timetable. However, do look for schools that offer a wide selection of clubs which appeal to all kinds of interests beyond sport too.

Amanda Childs, Chair of the IAPS adds: ‘Pastoral care is more

Ewell Castle School puts pastoral care first

Ewell Castle School is proud of its outstanding personal and pastoral support. The pastoral care and commitment to the wellbeing of every member of the community in this small school are the foundations of school life.

Each pupil is known and valued within a caring, stimulating and disciplined environment and inspired to thrive, as we engage them in a creative and academic environment. They are encouraged to adopt a growth mindset, allowing your child to develop confidence, contentment and emotional intelligence. The pastoral care team includes Form Tutors, Heads of Years, a Mindfulness Lead, Mental Health First Aiders, alongside pupil welfare staff - Counsellor, ELSA, School Nurse, Wellbeing Mentor and the Therapy Dog.

than formal PSHE lessons. It incorporates every interaction an individual has in school; from the moment they arrive until they leave. It is about a genuine, positive culture, having excellent role models and high expectations, balanced with a kind and realistic view of the support any individual child needs to succeed - and that will be different for every single child.’

Central to a robust pastoral approach is staff fully trained in mental health first aid and safeguarding. This also includes the non-teaching staff that children often seek out to talk to such as school nurses, lunchtime and office staff. Sometimes the support offered will be a listening ear, at other times, children might require signposting to additional support. The more mentally healthy schools usually have a school nurse, mental health support teams and even dedicated counselling.

For Dean Taylor, Associate Headteacher at Seven Kings School, a co-ed state school for ages 4 to 18 in east London, it’s the relationship between staff and pupils that holds the key to positive mental health in schools. Dean says: ‘The ethos is more important than anything and you can walk around this school and see that it’s inclusive, friendly, safe and with clear and consistent boundaries’.

Seven Kings pays particular attention to pressure points and makes sure every child has a trusted adult. There’s a joined-up approach with the SENCO too, in the knowledge that youngsters with conditions such as ADHD and autism can be particularly at risk of mental health problems. ‘The most vulnerable pupils have a one-page profile that’s shared with all staff’ adds Dean.

Finally, successful pastoral care involves the school, child and parents. Starting school is a huge milestone for the whole family and a carefully managed transition makes for a smoother pastoral pathway right from the start. Likewise, primary schools with good pastoral provision work closely with secondary schools in Year 6 to ensure a seamless transition to the next stage of education.

Good schools take the time to get to really know a child personally; what they like or don’t like and what they are interested in. Schools where pastoral care is foregrounded will extend their offerings to parents too. They might offer useful parent talks, for instance on safe use of technology and share wellbeing resources. Crucially, these schools will have the confidence to collaborate with parents in robust and trusting ways. If you think your child might need help, your first port of call should be your child’s form teacher or tutor who can elevate your concerns to the appropriate staff member.

Melanie Sanderson is Managing Editor of The Good Schools Guide (www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk), which reviews the key components, pastoral care being one, of hundreds of schools per year, providing parents with in-depth, unbiased insights.

The benefits of baby signing

From birth to five years old, a child’s brain experiences more development than at any other time in life. By the age of one, 70% of the final brain mass has developed, 80% by three, and around 90% by five years old. This means that significant growth happens even before a baby can walk or talk!

When it comes to language acquisition, many believe this begins when a baby says its first words, but it starts from birth. Babies are already paying attention to the movements and facial expressions of those around them and how adults respond shapes their brain development. Babies’ cooing, smiling and crying are all invitations for us to engage, making this early twoway communication crucial for the brains wiring.

Parents and caregivers play a vital role in encouraging early communication. By responding and interacting with their child, they are actively building the child’s brain. Talking, singing, reading and playing with babies from day one, strengthens the parent-child bond and enhances cognitive development. Introducing signs, alongside spoken words, boosts language development by stimulating areas of the brain involved in memory, auditory processing and motor co-ordination. It makes information easier to process, which can lead to a wider range of vocabulary and improved memory skills - essential for future learning.

One of the most profound benefits of baby signing is that it strengthens early communication. Before children develop verbal speech, introducing signs can help them express their needs and reduce frustration. Signs like ‘milk,’ ‘more,’ or ‘open’ allow babies to communicate effectively and encourage positive behaviour.

Sing and Sign classes, developed with the help of speech and language professionals, follow NHS guidelines and offer three age-appropriate courses. These courses, available both in-person and online, have been designed to support early development and language acquisition.

Operating throughout Surrey, you can contact your local teacher and book on to the next course using this link www.linktr.ee/SingandSignSurrey.

The effects of the clock change on a child: a challenge for parents

Children rely on consistency. The sudden shift in daylight and bedtime can throw off their internal body clock, leading to difficulties in falling asleep, waking up too early, or increased night wakings. This can result in crankiness, trouble concentrating and behavioural challenges during the day.

How parents can help

To ease the transition, start adjusting bedtime 10-15 minutes earlier a few days beforehand. Maintain a calming bedtime routine, reduce screen time before bed, and ensure plenty of natural light exposure in the morning. Patience is key - most children adjust within a week, but some may take longer.

Clock changes are inevitable, but with preparation and the right support, parents can help their children transition smoothly, ensuring better sleep and happier days ahead.

When extra support is needed

If your child’s sleep remains disrupted beyond the usual adjustment period, professional guidance can make a significant difference. Vicky Scott, a certified Sleep Nanny partner, specializes in gentle sleep solutions tailored to children’s needs. Family Fun Zone, Sutton By Ameera, age 6

I went to the Family Fun Zone in Sutton, and it was so big and so much fun! There are so many things to do - soft play, arts & crafts, table tennis and even more but I was too little! My sister had her 8th birthday party there and we did three activities – boccia bash which is like mini bowling, archery and run the gauntlet. This was like being a gladiator and we all loved it! There’s a café where you can eat pizza. Please visit, you’ll love it!

Godstone Farm, Godstone

On the Friday of my half term break, I went to Godstone Farm with my family. Godstone Farm is a big farm with lots of animals. We saw different types of animals such as emus, chickens, llamas, goats, meerkats, sheep, horses, reptiles, and of course pigs. There were signs at every animal station telling us about the animals. I learned a lot! We also got to feed the rabbits lettuce with a fishing rod.

There was also a Discovery Trail where we saw dinosaurs! Thank God, they weren’t alive! Besides animals, Godstone Farm also has play areas. We went to the Play Barn which had a big soft play area and different role play stations. My sister and I had so much fun playing while my parents took a break at the café. We couldn’t play in the outdoor playground because it started raining. Never mind, there is always a next time!

There is so much to see and do at Godstone Farm! I am telling all my friends to go and spend a wonderful day there with their family and friends. So should you! You won’t regret it. Tilburstow Hill Road, Godstone RH9 8LX www.godstonefarm.co.uk

Laser Quest, Kingston By Zaynab, age 11

Laser Quest Surbiton is a thrilling adventure venue! My friends and I battled to hold our ground against the opposing team, while navigating a mysterious maze wreathed in fog and tension. Ducking and dodging laser beams of light, while gaining ground and accruing points.

In Laser Quest the games are played in a labyrinth of corridors, catwalks and hidden niches. With flaring neon lights filling the air, it was a thrilling experience I’ll never forget!

As well as having a Laser Quest arena, the venue I went to also had an immersive Virtual Reality experience, with a range of different virtual worlds to explore. I chose the jetpack experience and swooped over a majestic city.

Overall, Laser Quest receives five stars from me and I will definitely visit again.

Bourne Hall Museum, Epsom

age 10

Bourne Hall in Epsom offers a library, park, café, museum with kid’s museum club and plenty of surrounding attractions.

The park features diverse British wildlife and a large pond, where you can feed ducks with cooked rice and seedless grapes. There’s a small play area for young children. The grounds are a perfect spot for a peaceful morning stroll with fresh air and lovely views in their landscaped surroundings. Inside, the library has a cozy, warm atmosphere, with a section for children. The museum showcases intriguing artefacts. Various fun and interactive workshops are held throughout the year.

I attended one on cave painting where we used glow sticks, in a dark room, to draw prehistoric animals like woolly mammoths and great elks. It was fascinating and an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend visiting Bourne Hall.

Horniman Museum and Gardens – Robot Zoo By Arian, age 10

In February, I had the opportunity to go to the Robot Zoo in the Horniman Museum and Gardens which is only available from 14 February to 2 November 2025.

The first thing I saw was the majestic giraffe at the front of the exhibition. I saw a chameleon and many more wonderful animals. This is one of my favorite exhibitions I have been to at the Horniman Museum and Gardens alongside with the beautiful butterfly museum.

Furthermore, I enjoyed the robot museum as it was very interactive and there were a lot of fun activities such as the lizard shooting game and the animal heart and lungs.

Overall, I really liked this museum, and I would like to come back. I recommend this zoo as a great family day out and a way to keep the children entertained in the holidays.
