Baby food pouches lack nutrients

An investigation into baby food pouches by BBC Panorama has found significant nutritional shortcomings across six leading brands, including Ella’s Kitchen, Heinz, Piccolo, Little Freddie, Aldi and Lidl.

Laboratory testing revealed that many products were low in essential nutrients such as iron and vitamin C, with some savoury pouches containing less than 5 percent of an infant’s daily iron requirement. Additionally, fruit pouches labeled ‘no added sugar’ often contained high levels of free sugars, exceeding the daily recommended amount for a one-year-old. Experts criticised the ‘misleading’ marketing used by brands promoting these pouches as healthy alternatives. Health risks, including tooth decay and inadequate nutrition, have raised alarm and professionals argue that stricter regulations are needed.

Orchestras in every school

The Association of British Orchestras (ABO) has launched the ‘An Orchestra in Every School’ campaign, aiming to give every child the chance to create live music, securing the future of the UK’s musical legacy.

The well-documented benefits of music include lowering anxiety to improving academic performance. However, music education is under threat, with fewer schools offering Music GCSEs and A-Level. To address this decline, the ABO plans to offer over one thousand live music-making experiences by the end of 2025.

ASK THE EXPERT

What can I do at home to help reduce chaos and stress this summer?

Families asks Rebecca Coombs, Director of Inner Space for her advice.

‘I am already feeling anxious and overwhelmed by the chaos that follows the kids by being at home over the summer holidays. What simple things can I do at home to help?’

Camilla, Epsom

I completely understand how you feel. The summer holidays can be such a joy but also bring absolute chaos, especially when the kids are home full-time!

It’s so normal to feel overwhelmed when the house feels like it’s bursting at the seams with toys, crafts, snacks and clutter following you from room to room. But the good news is that with a few simple shifts, you can make things feel more manageable (even enjoyable) without turning into a full-time housekeeper.

Firstly, focus on one space or ‘zone’ at a time. Even a single drawer or cupboard can make a difference. The kitchen counter, the dining table, the toy corner - pick just one area to reset daily and let the rest wait. You don’t need to tackle the whole house to feel calmer.

Secondly, try a simple ‘reset routine’ with the kids. A fiveminute tidy-up before lunch or dinner where everyone pitches in. No perfection, just a quick clear teaches them responsibility and buys you breathing space.

Another great trick is a ‘summer basket’ - a dedicated tub or basket for summer holiday essentials like sun cream, sunglasses, hats and outdoor toys. This stops them from being scattered all over the house and saves you running around every time you head out.

And don’t underestimate the power of letting go! The holidays are a brilliant time to quietly declutter things the kids have outgrown or forgotten. Even just filling one bag for donation makes room for all the chaos that inevitably comes with summer life.

If this still feels too much to manage alone, you don’t have to! Through my 1:1 organising services, I help busy families create homes that work with them, not against them. Whether it’s toys, wardrobes or whole rooms, I’m here to help you declutter, simplify and reset your space so you can actually enjoy the summer, not just survive it.

Rebecca Coombs is a professional organiser based in South London, she is a CPD certified and a verified member of APDO, the UK’s membership association for decluttering and organising professionals. Meet the Head interview with John Evans, Head of Royal Russell School Croydon

Families caught up with Mr John Evans, Headmaster of Royal Russell Junior School, to find out more about what makes Royal Russell so special - from its unique heritage to the inspiring start it gives to every child’s educational journey.

Exciting times lie ahead at Royal Russell Junior School. With work well underway on a brand-new purpose-built Junior School, set to open in September 2026. All pupils will soon benefit from exceptional new facilities within a nurturing, forward-thinking environment. The building will reflect their ethos of inspiring young minds to a lifelong love of learning whilst reflecting the Royal Russell journey through space, design and opportunity.

Alongside light-filled classrooms and flexible learning spaces, the development will further enhance their outstanding provision in the arts, sport and outdoor learning, including their much-loved Forest School and on-site swimming pool.

What do you particularly enjoy about working at Royal Russell School?

The school is a true community, and whilst new buildings are exciting, it’s the people who make us what we are. We have a warm, open community where staff, pupils and parents work in partnership to help every child flourish. I also love the diversity of our school - culturally, creatively and academically. No two children are the same here, every child is successful, and we celebrate that. It’s a privilege to be part of their journeys.

How do you think a learning environment can make a real difference to an individual pupil?

Children need to feel safe, valued and inspired to do their best learning. That’s why we’re so excited about the new Junior School building, as it will give pupils the space, resources and freedom to thrive right from the very start. The new building features a bespoke science lab, a brand-new Art & Design Centre, a huge library and gathering stairs for both formal and informal use and bespoke Early Years areas.

Every space has been designed with flexibility in mind, with many areas offering dual-purpose use for not just the Royal Russell community, but the wider community too. However, it’s not just about the impressive architecture and plans for our site; our specialist subject teaching from age 3, small class sizes and carefully tailored support help drive excellent academic outcomes for every child. Combined with our exceptional enrichment offer, we create an atmosphere where children are genuinely excited to come to school each day.

What is your biggest challenge at present?

The independent sector is facing challenges at the moment and

supporting our families is pivotal to maintaining our community’s values. Building strong relationships through openness and understanding means that we can work together to ensure that our children continue to thrive.

In three words, how would your students describe you?

Kind, fair and energetic.

In what way does the school link with the local community?

Community matters deeply to us. We work closely with local schools and nurseries, host events for families across Croydon and our pupils regularly take part in outreach projects, charity initiatives and local partnerships.

What do you think are the key skills that children should be mastering at the start of their school journey?

We focus on nurturing individuals’ overall development, including their intellectual, social, physical, creative, cultural and moral aspects.

Our curriculum provides rigour, and our amazing range of cocurricular activities prepare them with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes for a successful future. We develop the characteristics that are the foundation of our community: kindness, generosity, respect and integrity through our moral compass.

Whether it’s through exploring nature in Forest School, building confidence in the pool, or learning a new language with a specialist teacher, our goal is to spark a lifelong love of learning.

What advice would you give to parents choosing a school?

Trust your instincts. Visit the School for a tour or during one of our Open Events, speak to current parents, meet our staff and pupils and most importantly, see how your child responds.

Find a school where your child feels excited, seen and supported, and where the whole child is valued. A happy child who knows that they will be valued as part of their community will be a successful learner. Royal Russell is a place where happiness and academic outcomes go hand in hand.

Creativity and community help children thrive

When it comes to helping toddlers and children grow into confident, curious and well-rounded individuals, few things are as powerful, or as joyful as the arts. Whether it’s theatre, music, immersive storytelling or fingerpainting, creative experiences do more than just entertain little ones – they inspire new thoughts and ambitions.

Why the Arts Matter for Kids

You don’t need to be raising the next West End star to see the value of creativity and theatre in a child’s life. Creative activities have been linked to a whole host of developmental benefits, helping children with everything from emotional expression to academic performance.

Art is a powerful tool for children’s mental health, offering a means of self-expression, emotional processing, and creative development. It provides a safe space for exploring feelings, building self-esteem and enhancing cognitive abilities. Specifically, art can foster emotional intelligence, improve resilience, and promote positive social outcomes.

Not only do the arts have the ability to develop cognitive function and balance emotional wellbeing, but the independent thinking required to design to a brief or brainstorm on a creative solution help to develop skills essential in adult life.

Stories That Matter Theatre is a powerful way to help children understand the world around them. Theatre experiences in childhood open doors to empathy and cultural understanding of the wider world.

A Place to Belong

One of the most special things about being included in any form of creativity or arts group is the sense of community created. In a world that sometimes feels overwhelming, The Arts offer a space where children and their grown-ups can connect through creativity.

In an age of screens, busy schedules and academic pressure at school, making time for the creative fun might feel like a luxury, but it’s so important.

The Horton: Epsom’s Creative Hub

Since opening its doors in 2022, The Horton has become a vibrant community space, where children and families can come together to explore theatre, music, art and more.

This summer in Epsom, The Horton Arts Centre is doing just that: offering children the chance to develop their imaginations, build confidence and feel part of the wider community with a host of fantastic spectacles and engaging workshops.

Helping your kids ace their first school show

We asked Jordan Veloso, Head of Stage and Screen at PQA (Pauline Quirke Academy) for his tips.

For many parents and caregivers, preparing a child for a performance can be both rewarding and daunting. Supporting a child as they learn lines, feeling their excitement at sharing their work with others and becoming part of a show is truly special. Performing in a production is a significant milestone that can impact both children and parents profoundly.

Performing can help children improve their confidence, manage anxiety and stress, cope with difficult emotions and take risks. These are valuable lessons for children and their parents too.

To make the most of this memory-making experience, here are three tips to help your child relax and enjoy it:

Provide encouragement and patience

For many children, performing for the first time is a big deal. It might be their first time sharing their voice, dancing, acting or doing screen work in front of an audience. Whether they are shy or excited, providing the right amount of support can make all the difference. Be there for them, stay present and always offer encouragement. Let them know that you’re proud of their effort, regardless of how they feel about it. Your positive energy and belief in them can boost their confidence as they prepare for their big moment.

Show up and cheer them on

Being present and involved in the experience can make all the difference to how your child feels; showing up, cheering and being supportive will help them feel safe and secure. Your enthusiasm and pride in their achievement will reflect the excitement they feel. It’s essential to foster a positive and supportive environment as they embrace the challenge of

performing - no matter how big or small their role.

Celebrate the journey and growth

After the performance, take time to reflect and celebrate your child’s achievements.

Encourage your child to recognise how well they did and consider how their progress since rehearsals began. Celebrating this success helps reinforce their growing confidence and the life skills they’ve gained, such as resilience, teamwork and emotional intelligence.

It’s also a chance for parents to reflect on how their support and guidance helped their child grow. As your child continues to perform, you’ll both see how the experience becomes easier and how your child evolves into a more confident and well-rounded individual.

Swim Safely this summer!

Swimming promotes wellbeing, improves health and fitness, aids rehabilitation, encourages relaxation and let’s not forget, it is FUN. It is also important to recognise swimming as a lifesaving skill - one that deserves practice and time. Swimming lessons build water confidence, improves swimming ability and helps develop a range of valuable skills.

When summer arrives and the sun shines, water is even more appealing. However, did you know, almost half of UK accidental drownings occur between May and August?

Whilst mastering swimming can take time, today, you can learn how to enjoy the water safely. Read our tips to help keep you and your family safe near water.

Take the time to become familiar with your surroundings and spot the dangers! When using swimming pools, take notice of pool signs: Do you know where the shallow/deep end is? When visiting beaches, check the local weather and tidal information. Look for safety signs and coloured flags which tell you where and when it is safe to swim. Never swim past the buoys. Always check if there is a lifeguard on duty.

Never leave children unaccompanied in the water. Enter the water slowly and safely, especially when the water may be cold. Stay within reach to others and stay within your depth. Feeling tired? Exit the water and rest! If you are struggling to swim, turn on to your back and float.

Firebird Academy of Ballet

In an emergency, call 999. Shout for help and wave your arms for attention. If others need help, support by throwing them something that floats. Do not put yourself at risk, do not enter the water.

We believe everyone should have the opportunity to learn how to save themselves and others in the water. Learning to swim is lifesaving skill but it is also the start of many other water-based activities from scuba-diving, snorkelling, surfing... and many more! It is an activity that should be enjoyed by everyone. Get swimming this summer but, remember to swim safely!
