Sixteen years ago, on maternity leave with my first child, I loved picking up my copy of a new publication called Families Leeds while out and about with my baby. It was a reliable, reassuring and interesting friend – everything I was looking for at that time in my life! I loved it so much, I got in touch with the then editor and asked if I could write a column – Diary of an Imperfect Mum.

A few years down the line, when my second child was two, I took over as editor. Since then, many, many print deadlines, delivery days – and another baby – have come along. We’ve expanded to cover West Yorkshire and have loved working with small businesses and organisations in this area.

Families magazine has been a permanent companion to our perfectly imperfect family life, and that is exactly what I hope it is for you too. Thank you to everyone who helps us publish and distribute the magazine. Most of all, thank YOU for reading. There are some great giveaways in this issue – make sure you enter to win and check out our what’s on guide for all you need to plan for spring and half term.

Addressing Speech and Language Delays

Post-Covid, speech and language development has become a key concern for parents, especially as NHS waiting times for Speech and Language Therapy remain long. A June 2024 report revealed 22,952 children were on NHS waiting lists for up to a year.

In response, Chapter House School and Queen's Kindergarten appointed its own Speech and Language Therapist, Sarah Semple, who works with children in one-toone and group sessions.

Sarah said, "Every child is assessed upon joining the school with Individual Learning Plans put in place for those with support needs right through to those who are gifted. In a school environment, I can work closely with teachers and parents to help children meet their full potential, ensuring they receive the necessary support as soon as the need is identified, minimising any impact on their confidence, social interactions, or academic performance. It’s rewarding to identify needs early and support children throughout their educational journey.”

Join in Walk to School Week

A generation ago, 70 per cent of us walked to school – now it’s less than half. So Walk to School Week was started to encourage more kids to get out of the car and walk to school.

Walk to School Week is held from May 19 to 23 and is organised by the UK charity Living Streets to celebrate the health and wellbeing benefits of walking.

Families will be encouraged to walk, cycle, scoot or Park and Stride to see the big differences that can come from small steps - from healthier and happier children who arrive refreshed, fit and ready to learn - to less congestion and fewer cars outside the school gates.

Download the Family Walk to School Kit, designed to help parents, carers and children make the walk to school work for them. Visit www.livingstreets.org.uk/walk-to-school

Clip 'n Climb Ilkley reaches 10 years –with a special summer offer!

Our friends at Clip 'n Climb Ilkley also have a big anniversary this summer –and they are getting the party started with a special offer for climbers!

Sally and Richard Shelton are passionate about their independent, family-run business. To celebrate their milestone, they will be offering £10 climbing sessions during the first week of the school summer holidays (July 21 to 25).

“We are proud that because of the constant attention to maintenance, renewal and endless cleaning we still function amazingly and look great,” said Sally. “Richard and I have been part owners since the start and I have been Centre Manager for the past eight years, running it as a mum, looking out for the children climbing and always considering the families who come here and giving them the best experience.”

Three years ago, the couple bought the business and now fully own it. “We just wanted to run it as Ilkley people, offering our services with the same nurturing emphasis that we had established, to both our customers and our staff,” explained Sally.

The centre’s location is one of the things that makes it unique. Set in the heart of Ilkley, at the town’s train station, it is accessible and convenient for local people and visitors alike. “It makes climbing an easy option, whether it’s after school, a weekend outing, or a rainy-day activity,” said Sally.

“Ilkley is already a magnet for outdoor climbers, with iconic spots like Ilkley Moor. An indoor centre in town complements that perfectly.

Inspired by their own young children, owners Della and Adrian Stocks had a simple mission - to create a safe, stimulating nursery environment where every child is encouraged to grow by a team of trusted, qualified and approachable members of staff.

From one small site to its seven current nursery settings, Cliffe House has expanded its reach but maintained its core ethos and family-run feel - one that firmly puts children and families first. Nurturing and developing minds is at the heart of what it does, and this was taken one step further in 2022, when Cliffe House Training Academy was born. ‘Autism only affects boys’

When autism first began to be studied, people thought it only affected boys because the studies only looked at one presentation of autism. We now know that autism is a spectrum.

More people are being diagnosed now, because we understand autism better and we’re no longer looking for just one presentation of autism.

More girls, women, transgender, and non-binary people are being diagnosed.

This bias in the original studies affects different ethnicities too, because the boys they studied were mostly white. Autism doesn’t only effect boys, it just might not be as obvious in other genders.

Dr Stephen Shore once said, “When you meet one person with Autism, you’ve met one person with Autism”. Evolve Psychology Services, founded by clinical psychologist Dr Laura Powling, offers autism and ADHD assessments for children and adults. Evolve offers an expert service with care, attention and empathy at its heart. It has clinics in Harrogate, Huddersfield, Norwich, Exeter and Dublin with a new clinic opening in the North East soon.

Writing for a purpose

For some children, writing feels like a chore rather than an enjoyable or meaningful activity. And when AI apps generate text instantly, there’s definitely a disincentive for the less inclined to develop writing skills. So how do we inspire a love of writing and encourage young minds to pick up a pen? Firstly, children engage more when they understand the purpose of writing; whether to entertain, persuade, inform or recount.

They also need a topic they care about. First-hand experiences help generate ideas. For example, if writing instructions for making a sandwich, they should make one first. Family outings also provide excellent material for writing, making it more personal and enjoyable.

Providing strong text examples helps children recognise the key features of different genres. Showing them formal letters teaches layout and language expectations for these, while a nonchronological report follows a different structure. Understanding the genre builds confidence and improves writing.

Discussing the target audience and purpose also increases motivation. For example, children writing to their headteacher to request longer break times will be driven to craft a strong argument! Knowing their writing could create real change makes the task more meaningful and engaging.

Receiving a response can definitely boost confidence and enthusiasm. Even Sir David Attenborough has replied to children’s handwritten letters! It’s useful to research potential recipients in advance so your child is engaged with the writing activity. A child studying volcanoes could write to a volcanologist; one learning about environmental issues could contact WWF or Greenpeace.

improvement. It also allows children to celebrate their efforts, particularly when writing to entertain. Positive feedback from peers and adults further builds confidence, making writing more enjoyable and rewarding.

Opportunities to showcase children’s writing can make it more meaningful for them so submitting work to school newsletters, local newspapers or writing competitions can deliver a sense of accomplishment. At home, sharing stories with family members or displaying work reinforces the importance of their efforts.

Creative approaches including storytelling games, comic strips or collaborative writing exercises can make writing fun, while encouraging journalling allows children to express their thoughts freely, improving their skills without pressure.

Fostering a love for writing requires purpose, engagement and encouragement. With the right support, children should be able to see writing as more than a school task and enjoy it as a tool for creativity, communication and self-expression.

Historical creative writing

Writing about history can be challenging as children cannot experience it directly.

Pictures, videos and artefacts help bring history to life. Organisations like Time Capsule Education (www.timecapsule.education) offer immersive resources that go beyond surface-level writing. A child asked to write as a Roman boy or girl without stimulus will produce weaker work than one who has handled artefacts, engaged in role play and watched enactments.

Reading historical texts like Beowulf and making crosscurricular links further develops ideas. Visiting historical sites and taking part in interactive activities enhances writing, while keeping a digital diary provides prompts.

A blank page can feel daunting, so sentence starters and word banks help kick-start writing. Surprisingly, computer games can aid the process by offering detailed settings that inspire descriptions. Access to a thesaurus, online or in print, encourages varied vocabulary. By combining research, experiences and creative tools, children can produce richer, more engaging historical writing.

Summer camps and workshops: the options

Summer holiday camps, courses and workshops are not only an ideal way to fill in childcare gaps during the long summer holiday but also offer the opportunity for your child to discover a new hobby or take their existing passion to a new level.

Multi-activity day camps. These camps offer a diverse daily schedule of sports and creative activities, with multiple sessions lasting one hour to ninety minutes. Ideal for kids with varied interests, they generally feature sports, arts and craft, outdoor exploration and games.

Sport/single activity camps or workshops. Sport and single activity camps or workshops are perfect for kids keen to focus on specific interests, including sports, creative arts, performing arts or STEM. These programmes, running from a day to two weeks with sessions lasting two to five hours a day, often wrap up with performances, games or project showcases.

Out of the ordinary. Traditionally themed camps or workshops are great but there’s a world of unique activities waiting to spark curiosity and creativity too!

How about a circus skills workshop? Or for something out of this world, sign your child up for a space and astronomy camp. Your budding chef could even take their culinary prowess to the next level at cooking camps. You could also consider a residential camp to develop independence, social skills and confidence.

Use your tax-free childcare. Families can receive up to £2,000 annually per child or £4,000 for a disabled child, to help with childcare costs, including approved holiday clubs. This support is available for children up to age 11 or 17 for those with disabilities. Don’t miss this opportunity to ease your childcare holiday club expenses.

Take paid or unpaid leave. You may find that if all else fails you will need to use your annual leave. If you don’t have enough paid leave then you have a statutory entitlement to ‘parental leave’ which allows up to eighteen weeks unpaid leave per child until they’re 18.

Team up. In addition to grandparents, consider teaming up with friends to cover certain days and reciprocate in a shared arrangement.

Share a nanny. Sharing a nanny with other families is called a nanny share, where multiple families use the same nanny. The nanny may care for all children at once or split time between families.

United Education’s Adventure Camps

Children aged five plus spend their summer immersed in activities that spark joy, curiosity and self-belief at Adventure Camps (www.adventure-camps.co.uk). From arts and crafts to theatre, from team games to outdoor exploration - every day is a new opportunity to grow.

And, while the children are busy having fun, something else is happening too. Their wellbeing is being nurtured. Time away from screens, fresh air, new friendships, and a sense of freedom all combine to support their mental, emotional and physical health.

For many, it’s their first step away from routine. But, it’s in that gentle stretch beyond comfort that confidence begins to grow. One new skill at a time.

Adventure Camps are so much more than a childcare providerthey’re a safe, nurturing space where confidence blossoms and kids can truly come into their own.

Kickstart Kamps

These fabulous camps provide diverse, fun and educational activities for children during the school holidays. The unique ‘Kamp’ experience is available for school children aged between five and 11 and is designed to help them develop new friendships, have fun together and provide a new peer support network. The ultimate aim is to encourage children to try new things, broaden their imagination and creative flare, as well as offering them the opportunity to develop sports and other skills.

These accessible camps offer flexible booking, a huge range of activities and special feature days. What’s not to love!
