Orchestras in every school
The Association of British Orchestras (ABO) has launched the ‘An Orchestra in Every School’ campaign, aiming to give every child and young person the chance to create live music, securing the future of the UK’s musical legacy.
The well-documented benefi ts of music include lowering anxiety to improving academic performance. However, music education is under threat, with fewer schools off ering Music GCSEs and A-Level entries falling by forty three percent.
To address this decline, the ABO plans to off er over one thousand live music-making experiences by the end of 2025, reaching one million young people. It is also calling on the government to ensure every child has two hours of weekly active music-making until age 16.
The campaign envisions every school in the UK having access to, or creating, its own orchestra and highlights the critical role of music in education, culture and communities. More info: abo.org.uk

Days Out Reviews
Dinosaur Golf
We do love a game of mini golf and dinosaurs are a big hit in our house, so what better than to combine them? We enjoyed a chilled evening game doing an 18-hole round, children vs adults!
The kid’s enjoyed the dino theme, especially our littlest who showed off his reading skills with the dino plaques that were scattered around, while our eldest interjected all the facts he knew. The holes took a little longer, but it was worth it to see them passionately discussing who would win in a fight – Triceratops and T.Rex (spoiler, NOT T.Rex).
There were a few very tricky holes that needed some thinking outside the box and the kids (and myself) did have to go fishing in the ‘dino lakes’ when shots went wild. It was good fun and fresh air, both of which were very needed and welcome. It’s one of our go-to mini golf spots now.

Note: If booking a late afternoon game, check the clubhouse opening times as the toilets are inside. It’s worth checking their Facebook page before booking, as sometimes they put special deals and discounts on there.
Lowndes Park
Being from Chesham ourselves, my family have been excitedly waiting for the regeneration of Lowndes Park, and the new playground did not disappoint. If you haven’t been, it’s a definite ‘must visit’ for summer.
It’s well-located right in the heart of Chesham near the High Street. There’s a sunken trampoline, see-saw, multiple climbing frames and two slides. There’s every kind of swing you can think of: a 4-seater ‘fun’ swing, a standing swing and a bucket swing in the enclosed area next door. They’re all accessible and crazily engineered – I expected them to crash into each other the first time the kids used them, but of course they didn’t! There’s also a bug house, a huge hit with the nature loving kids and a lovely eco-friendly touch.
There’s spaces for scooter and bike storage, some seats for adults to sit and chill. Don’t forget to check out the bricks as you enter! The kids were excited to see one of their school’s

Clip & Climb
The boys have been begging to go climbing again with their cousin. So, we took them to the Clip and Climb in High Wycombe. After a safety brief, they got to take their pick of the wall challenges. There were loads of different challenges for them, with the older two going straight for the trickiest looking frames. There were jump pipes, twisted frames, tiny hand-hold frames and even ones that move slightly with you – just to add to the fun!
My eldest swarmed up them all, he was excited to get to the top as fast as possible. My teen nephew took a more chilled race up, while my littlest needed a few pointers as he persevered to try and join them. There was a lot of excitement to go on the vertical drop slide as well, a novelty for both older kids. They held on as they were pulled up, only letting go when they got to the top. When I asked how they found it, my eldest screamed, ‘Epic… More!’ and my youngest quietly said, ‘terrifying!’

had one. My littlest absolutely loves the new games there –a big Connect 4 and pinball game that he loved challenging his friends to. As my eldest said, ‘the park is epic now!’
Sat Nav: Chesham, HP5 1HU.
Note: The regeneration is an ongoing project that they are fundraising for, check out ‘Love Lowndes’ on Facebook.
The Rye, High Wycombe – A Budget Day Out That’s Big on Fun!
By Vicky Collins - local mum and talented teacher from Total Tutoring
If you’re looking for a low-cost day out that wears the kids out and gives you more than five minutes’ peace (hopefully!), let me introduce you to The Rye.
Whether you need a pit stop after town (it’s just a short walk from the High Street) or want a full-on adventure, The Rye delivers. There are two playgrounds: one newly refurbished near the café (perfect for grabbing caffeine and snacks), and another quieter one close to the ice-cream van. Swings, trampolines, slides, climbing frames – there’s something for all ages.
We love heading to the waterfall where the kids can paddle and hunt for crayfish, (bring a net and bucket!).
It’s a brilliant picnic spot too – don’t forget a ball or cricket set for a kickabout on the grass afterwards. Look out for
the giant carp in the Dyke, and spring ducklings and signets are always a hit. The café sells bird food – and you might even spot a kingfisher or egret if you’re lucky.
In summer, boat hire is available –think pedallos and little rowing boats (lifejackets are provided). And the outdoor Lido is a treat: a proper open-air pool and toddler splash zone with real holiday vibes – just without the packing and travel stress (booking ahead is a must on hot days).
Don’t miss Pann Mill either – the gardens are always open and full of charm and tranquillity. The working mill is open a few days a year and makes a lovely stop –just be wary of children near the river and mill workings.
It’s fun, mostly free, and perfect whether you’ve got half an hour, half a day or more.
Bekonscot Model Village and Railway
By Lilly Grice
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a giant? At Bekonscot Model Village and Railway in Beaconsfield you can find out!
The village was built in 1929 by a man called Roland Callingham. Did you know he used his model railway to move soil when he built the village? What’s amazing is, it’s the oldest original model village in the world! Queen Elizabeth II even visited when she was 8-years-old.
The village has lots of paths which wind through houses, shops and hotels. I wandered past scenes that showed what it was like in the 1930’s – canals with boats, a fort guarded by soldiers, a funfair and an airport. There were some very funny ones, like a policeman chasing a robber with a briefcase stuffed to the brim with jewels, a fox on a hunting horse’s back and a donkey on a beach misbehaving by refusing donkey rides! There was also a replica of Enid Blyton’s house with Noddy in his red and yellow car parked at the door.
I followed one path down to a harbour where lots of boats were moored. In the water there were real fish. They must’ve looked like whales to the tiny people! Another path led to a beautiful stone church. I peered through a window and saw a baptism inside with bell ringers in the steeple chiming their bells.
Choo! Choo! The model train is coming, and this one is carrying coal! You can also have fun steering electric boats around a lighthouse. Funnily, I kept on crashing my boat!
At the end, we went for a ride on the single-gauge railway and had a delicious honeycomb ice-cream. It was a brilliant day out!
Princess Diana Memorial Playground
By Maya Bordia
One sunny morning, my family and I visited the Diana Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens with friends.
It’s convenient location, just a few steps away from Queensway tube, makes for an easy journey from Marylebone station. When you walk into the park, you are met by a wide avenue framed by luscious green spaces, leading to the playground.
When we entered the playground, the first thing I saw was a huge pirate ship complete with a crow’s nest, bottom deck, ladders and a steering area. The ground is covered with soft sand, which adds another element for children to play with. I loved going up into the crow’s nest to the topmost tier – I could almost see over the whole park! The other areas included musical instruments, a few small wooden houses for younger children, lots of different types of swings, (including a special chair swing), teepees and a climbing frame with slides, rope bridges and a fireman’s pole.
My favourite part was the pirate ship, as it had lots of nooks and crannies to explore. When we had finished our adventure, we refuelled with a pot of grapes from the café, which were delicious. I loved my trip to Diana Memorial Playground and would definitely recommend it!
Shaping a summer that works for your SEN child — & you!
By Sarah Billingham
We can put a lot of pressure on ourselves to create picture perfect, memory-making summer holidays for our children. In reality, it can be a real struggle to meet our SEN children’s needs throughout the holidays.
The school holidays bring a lot of change to the usual routine which can be unsettling for children with SEN. It is important to create a sense of predictability and structure so that your child is able to relax and enjoy the fun activities you have planned and you both enjoy the summer break.
Try these tips for a calmer and fun summer:
Start by talking about what will stay the same so that your child is reassured by the familiar. Emphasise the constants that will remain in place such as having their usual breakfast cereal, access to favourite toys and the comfort of more time with you. Preserve some of your regular routine to provide anchors such as maintaining the morning and bedtime routines.
Use visual aids to help your child to see what is coming up. A weekly visual calendar can work well, particularly when it is simple and repetitive, incorporating daily routines and special activities. Create the calendar together, giving your child some choices about which meals and activities to include, building a sense of ownership.
SEN-friendly days out
Day trips are a wonderful way to open up our children’s learning and life experiences. With pre-planning and a few resources, you can make the outings more accessible and enjoyable.
Apply for an Access Card. The card acts as a form of ID and uses symbols to easily communicate the support that may be needed. The card often highlights the need for an essential companion/carer and a number of attractions accept these cards and provide a free carer’s ticket.
Get a sunflower lanyard. These lanyards are intended to indicate to staff at airports and attractions that there is a hidden disability, or SEN, so that they can allow more time and space for your group, or offer assistance, such as reduced queuing where they can. The lanyards are getting increased recognition by the wider public too.
Many theatres offer relaxed performances where shows are adapted to provide an easier environment for those with additional needs. Similarly, a number of museums have designated quieter sessions.
Sometimes less is more. We can fall into the trap of over scheduling and trying to pack in lots of new and fun experiences for our children but this can lead to overwhelm.
Plan regular pit stops and sensory breaks. Plan regular opportunities for your child to have calm chill-out time. Outdoor time, solitary play, chill time in a cosy den, sensory play or even an extended, relaxing bath can really help your child to reset.
Prioritise connection. When your child feels connected to you, this helps them to feel ready to try new things.
Remember that you set the climate. School holidays can be exhausting for parents. Set realistic expectations for yourself, plan decompression time and maintain your self-care routines to allow you to recharge. Embrace the imperfections and remember that a calmer parent contributes to a calmer household.

SEN play activities for kids
Games are great for developing social interaction, communication and attention skills. Quick games boost quality time together, wherever you are. Orchard Toys’ lotto, card games like Dobble and Uno and hide-and-seek are firm favourites.
Sensory play including water play and playdough are a great way to help your child to regulate. Adding elements such as safety scissors, pegs, containers with lids, zips or button closures provide the opportunity to practise fine motor skills too.
Don’t forget about positioning for play. If your child is reluctant to sit at a table for too long, head down to the floor and both lie on your tummy. Not only have you got your child’s optimal visual attention towards you and the game, you are also building their upper body strength as they prop themselves up on their forearms. This is so important for the postural stability needed for fine motor skills. They may tire and that’s okay, just head back to sitting on the floor then back down again when they are ready.
Unlock your child’s reading potential
By Jemma Z Smith
Reading is one of the most valuable skills a child can develop but it’s not just about being able to sound out words, or finish a book – it’s about understanding it.
Inference, a skill often spoken about by teachers, means being able to work out what a character is thinking, their reasoning behind decisions and what they might do next. To help children go beyond the basics, a creative approach encourages that all-important understanding.
When meeting with parents, I try to emphasise the benefit of going beyond asking: ‘Did you like the book?’ What other questions encourage your child to reveal how much they have understood?
Firstly, timing is important. Don’t wait until you have finished reading the book to ask questions; make them part of your reading routine. Ask before you read: ‘what might the character do next?’, then, in the middle: ‘why do you think the character made that choice?’ and ‘what would you do in their shoes?’ Then: ‘did the ending of this chapter surprise you?’
Secondly, encourage your child to ask you these questions too. Whilst we might all long for our child to leave us in peace to actually just read the book to them, their questions provide the chance for us to model inference to them. If they are not asking questions, try explaining the book to them (at their level) and say out loud what you hope might happen next.
Thirdly, you don’t have to restrict the questions to fiction books. If your child is reading a poster on the Tube, ask them what it is about. Pretend to be too busy to read some instructions and have your child summarise them or ask: ‘what new fact did you learn?’ or ‘would you recommend this to someone interested in...?’ These open-ended questions encourage children to think critically and reflect on what they’ve read.
The type of book matters too. Humorous stories are great for picking apart language and tone. Questions such as: ‘why is this funny?’ or ‘can you draw this character?’ can help children to see why an author has described a scene in a certain way. Adventure books are perfect for discussing cause, effect and characters’ motivations. By tailoring
questions to the genre, you help children engage more deeply and develop more sophisticated reading skills.
Comprehension is a lifelong skill and developing it doesn’t have to be a chore. By asking thoughtful questions and tailoring conversations to reading material, parents can turn comprehension into something meaningful, enjoyable and confidence-building.
Relatable questions for different book types:
Books can be great starting places for discussions around bullying, technology, motivation etc. Asking the right kind of questions can transform reading from a solo activity into a powerful discussion about values
Here are some examples, based on book types:
Fiction. What would you have done differently to solve the problem? Why did the character choose to do this? How would you feel if you were the character?
Non-Fiction Would this be a book that you would share with your friends? Would this book be useful for a school project? Why or why not? Can you explain what you read to someone who’s never heard of this topic?
Graphic Novels. How do the pictures help you understand the story? What emotions do the characters show through their expressions? Is the story told differently from a regular book?
These questions build, prediction, empathy and analysis - key parts of strong comprehension.

Tech tools and books to support comprehension
The digital world isn’t the enemy of reading; it can actually support it.
Sites like Bookopolis ( bookopolis.com) allow young readers to log books, write reviews and discover titles based on what others like them are reading. These tools not only make reading more fun, but encourage kids to reflect on what they’ve read.
Toppsta (toppsta.com) is a great UK-based resource where children and parents can leave reviews and browse ageappropriate suggestions. For teens, Goodreads ( goodreads.com) and #BookTok on TikTok are popular platforms where they can follow authors, create reading lists and even engage with online book clubs.
If you’re looking for surefire reads, some must-haves include The Worst Witch series or Dog Man for ages 6–8, The Boy At the Back of the Class, Percy Jackson or The Explorer for 9-12s and One of Us is Lying for teens. Pairing the right book with the right child can often be the first step to capturing their interest and getting them talking.
