ISSUE 35 JULY-AUG 2013 ®

Relax, the warm weather is on its way and the longest day of the year is only just passed – so there are still many more light evenings to enjoy. This is the season of big fairs and shows - see pages 11 and 18-19 and be sure to put your favourite days out in your diary now! Ahead of our big Clubs and Classes issue in September-October, we have a feature on Ballet. Every teacher would love to see more boys in class, so if your son is showing an interest, encourage him to do a free trial class, which most teachers offer. Hooray for our Children’s Centres, which offer so much to so many. See some of their summer activities on pages 14-15. And we can’t resist a few camping ideas for the summer. Start small and local and feel the freedom of living in a field! Have fun this summer. Eleanor Lines, Editor, Families Surrey East

Hobbledown just got even more exciting with its new underground tunnels. The new tunnels add to the towers, sand play zones, high ropes course, aerial walkways and 14,000sqft indoor play barn. Hobbledown is all about adventurous and challenging play and guests should wear clothing they don’t mind getting a little scruffy. Brogdale Bees

Following the recent dramatic decline in bees, Brogdale Farm's creative bee exhibition helps demonstrate the importance of bees to fruit and food production. Their commercial importance is staggering. It is estimated it would cost British farmers at least £1.8 billion a year to pollinate crops by hand. The National Fruit Collection is an important scientific resource and the largest collection of fruit in the world on one site including apples, pears, cherries, plums and other bush nuts and fruits. Babies and Toddlers TIME FOR MUMS

Is Pregnancy Yoga for Me? Whether this is your first pregnancy or you already have little ones at home, yoga is a great way to relax, whilst improving your physical and emotional wellbeing and helping you feel more confident about the birth. Many women who have never done yoga before find that it is an ideal form of exercise during their pregnancies and beyond.

“The exercises are gentle and flowing whilst really strengthening your muscles and relieving the aches and pains of pregnancy.” Reigate mum, 22 weeks

Saturday, 21 September, 10.15am-12noon (10am members). £1. North Holmwood Village Hall, Spook Hill RH5 4JP Tel: 0844 243 6107.

One of the best things about yoga is that it builds the strength you will need to support your changing shape. For many women, back pain feels like a normal part of pregnancy, especially as your baby continues to grow. Prenatal yoga strengthens the muscles that support the weight of your growing child, taking pressure off the lower back. Specific poses create a sense of space and openness that can also help relieve the pressure.

“Yoga classes have made me feel calmer, stronger and better prepared for my baby's birth. They are also a fun way to meet other mums-to-be and compare bumps!” First time mum, 34 weeks

The conscious breathing exercises, along with gentle postures, bring a sense of renewal and vitality. The practice can help instil a real sense of calm in you and your baby, building a great foundation for life after the birth.

Monster Moo Launches Horley mum Lynne Geary enjoyed baby and toddler sessions with her first baby so much that, rather than return to her work after her second child was born, she created the perfect environment for other mums and toddlers to come and share creative fun with art classes and cookery. Launching in July after running some very successful taster sessions, Lynne’s classes will be on Wednesdays and Fridays at the Redhill Youth Association Hall in Marketfield Way. On Thursdays, Monster Moo Studios will be at Subud Hall, Allingham Rd, South Park, Reigate. Monster Moo is mainly for 2-4yr olds, but there is also an art class for the <2s and summer holiday workshops for 4-6yr olds. Lynne will be doing model making, too – with a bit of science thrown in! In the cookery classes, children will not only learn to cook, but will be finding out about the food they eat, too. Tel: 07506 115526. (click on workshops for the summer activities)

'Baby Quake' Preparing for Parenthood Experts at relationship charity OnePlusOne help new parents prepare for the effect their new addition will have on their relationship. The transition to parenthood can be a stressful and vulnerable time for couples, and the charity’s new report, 'Sleep, Sex and Sacrifice: the transition to parenthood, a testing time for relationships?' demonstrates the difficulties new parents can face and how they can be supported to overcome them. Surprising statistics show that almost two-thirds of new parents had a concern about their relationship which was not there before they had the baby. Of those parents with concerns, 40% of new mums felt they may no longer be sexually attractive to their partner and 25% of new dads were worried their partner was no longer interested in sex. Even more shocking, out of more than 1,400 parents, nearly a quarter were no longer with the partner they had their first child with and, of those parents no longer together, two-fifths split during pregnancy or before the child reached three years old.

Independent Midwives - Yes or No? Midwives who have completed an approved programme of education and have registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, (NMC) may practise where ever they choose to in accordance with NMC rules. In the UK that could be in the NHS, the private sector, with an agency or as an independent self-employed midwife. If a midwife chooses to be self employed she is regulated by the NMC midwives rules and standards, and must adhere to the same statutory obligations as an employed midwife. However, insurance costs for independent midwives are now so high that the profession is under threat and professional indemnity insurance may be compulsory after October 2013. Independent midwives not only provide a valuable service by giving mums-to-be continuity of care throughout pregnancy, at the birth (at home or in hospital) and providing post-natal care; they also save the Health Service an estimated ÂŁ10million per year, being paid for by individual parents. Independent Midwives UK, the support and advice organisation for members and parents seeking advice about using an independent midwife, is calling for the Government to provide insurance for their services. The issue is being re-opened by government ministers in September. For an update on the situation, go to

ANTE AND PERINATAL CARE Pilates Pilates in pregnancy develops core strength around the abdomen to support the back using stretches and breathing techniques; it also improves mobility and fluidity of movement. These two things make it a perfect pregnancy practice, creating a body that is toned, strong and mobile, helping make pregnancy comfortable and preparing the body to recover after the birth. Zoe Fisher offers small classes for mums-tobe (babies in buggies welcome) and larger classes for the general public. The Pilates training focusses strongly on detailed anatomy and the small classes allow Zoe to pay close attention to everybody’s movements and ensure that everyone progresses appropriately.

Hypnobirthing For everyone wanting to enter labour in a calm and gentle way, hypnobirthing will help you work towards that end. It can bring many benefits, including a shorter labour and reduced need for pain relief. Birthing mothers report feeling more alert and in control during labour and birth. Babies benefit when they are born drug free. Fathers and mothers can learn the techniques together, including selfhypnosis, visualisation and fear-release exercises. By understanding how the uterine muscles and hormones are working at this time, both partners know more about what to expect and work as a team. Private or group classes totalling nine hours are spread over a time to suit you. The classes are supported by a CD, a book and handouts. Sharon Jeal, the Hypnobirthing practitioner, is also qualified as a psychotherapist, also helping clients with chronic pain and weight loss.

Clubs and Classes SUMMER FUN

Summer time at our Children's Centres Children's centres provide a valuable range of advice and support for parents and carers. Their services are available to you from pregnancy and until your child goes into reception class at primary school. Children’s centres are the focus for many support agencies, from health visitors providing baby clinics to job centre representatives. You can get professional advice on health and family matters, learn about training and job opportunities or just socialise with other people. Your child can make friends there and learn as they play. Children’s centres all respond to the needs of the local community; each one is not necessarily the same. Some operate in groups, or ‘clusters’ with a main centre plus outreach venues, often in more rural areas. Some centres will offer additional services, such as a ‘stop smoking’ clinic or help for parents of children with learning difficulties or disabilities. Many of the services are free; a small voluntary donation may be requested for some activities. Call to find out more about what’s on at your local children’s centres this school summer holiday. Many of the main centres are open all day as usual, many with special days planned for the summer holiday period. Others might have reduced opening hours or just specific sessions available. Addresses and contact details of the Surrey (East) children’s centres are listed here (see right).

A summer message from the team at Dovers Green We are open all year round, Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm and our regular activities will continue through the schools summer holidays. We are busy with ‘School Readiness’ activities for our children starting school in September, as encouraging your child to be as independent as possible will really help them get off to a great start in Reception! We are currently planning a two-hour First Aid course with the Red Cross for children aged 7+yrs. This will be a basic ‘first response’ training, teaching children what to do in a medical emergency. We are also looking to hold a couple of ‘Picnic in the Park’ play sessions during August, held locally in Woodhatch and Reigate. All our courses resume in September, including Post Natal and Parenting Puzzle. C & C Dance School

Clubs & Classes

Choosing Ballet for your child Ballet classes are a good introduction to dance and provide a sound basis for any other forms of dance your child might become interested in. For many parents this might be the obvious activity for girls – but since Billy Elliott and the recent successes of the BalletBoyz, boys are starting to realize the benefits and fun of ballet and dance. Massively popular, ballet is a great exercise that also brings other advantages: coordination, balance, strength, endurance and discipline. Ballet builds core strength and, through careful stretches, allows the extension of limbs required in other dance forms. As a creative activity your children’s imagination will be stimulated and they may also enjoy expressing themselves to music. It’s also a great social activity!

When to begin? Some mother and toddler classes start at 18 months, with mums staying at the class and often joining in. Ballet classes at 2 years can provide a fun and informal way

JML Academy

to kindle a child’s love for dance, focusing on creative movement, imagination and basic ballet steps. Posture, co-ordination and balance begin their development naturally through these early classes. Some teachers will offer a more formal style class at 2.5yrs, others begin at 3yrs old. Your child should feel comfortable leaving you – and preferably should not be in nappies!

Ballet exams The earliest ballet exams are for five-year olds. Ballet technique is tested in an ageappropriate way – whether your child is dancing for pleasure or seems set on a dance career. You can discuss this with your child’s ballet teacher. The main ballet exam boards are the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). These exam boards also provide teaching qualifications. Parents can ask the Council of Dance Education and training (CDET - about the different qualifications.

Ballet homework? This is not usually required, though various new skilled movements can best be acquired through practice. Home practice is expected in the leadup to an exam.

Principal: Jo Swidzinska Tel: 07873 63 42 92 The JLM Academy is an RAD school based in Bletchingley, Charlwood and Netherne offering ballet and tap. We focus on building a love of dance through fun and creative classes for children aged from 2 1/2+yrs. All children who attend make new friends as well as learning new skills and building confidence.

Boys welcome? All ballet teachers welcome boys and their numbers are increasing. Don’t be put off if the number of boys is still low – your son will be learning a valuable set of skills.

What about other styles of dance?

All ballet teachers will have learned other styles of dance during their training, such as jazz, contemporary, tap and musical theatre but won’t necessarily
