TwolearnersfromShabalala SecondarySchoolschoolwere honouredforflyingthe provincialflaghighindifferent sportingcodesbothata ProvincialandNationallevel. Thishappenedattheoccassion oftheofficialhandoverofthe Schoollastweek

Committedtoprovidingan environmentthatallowsstudents tohaveavibrantstudentlife throughsportingandrecreational activities,theUniversityof Mpumalanga(UMP)launched theIndigenousGamesatthe Mbombelacampus. Thegamesfeatureafewcodes thatallowstudentstocompetein teamsorindividuallyto participateatprovincialand nationallevel.Thetraditional indigenousplayactivitiesand gameshavebeenmodernized. Overtime,thegameshave becomeanexpressionoflocal people,culture,andsocialreality Theseactswerelargelyignored inhistoricalandanthropological studiesofSouthAfrica's indigenouspeople.Thechallenge wastoresurrectanddisseminate thisrichindigenoushistoryso thateveryonemayparticipatein traditionalgames.

SportandRecreationSouth Africastrivestoconserveand promotethisrichhistoryfor futuregenerationsthrough indigenousgames.UMPStudent Divisionhascollaboratedwith theDepartmentofSportand Recreationtobringindigenous gamestotheuniversitytogether withtheassistanceofMr ZwelakheMasilelafromUMP’s SchoolofSocialSciences. "Wehavethesupportfromthe DepartmentofSportsand Recreationwhohaveassistedus withcoordinatorsofeach sportingcode.Thegamesare nowplayedbyrulesthathave beenapprovedbythe DepartmentofSports,”saidMr Masilela.Studentsplayagame ofDiketo,oneof10recognized indigenousgamesinSouth Africa.“Theindigenousgames havecountlessbenefits,which includeassistingstudentstoforge careersincertaincodes, includingcoordinatorsand managers.Thesewillopen countlessopportunitiesfor Somestudents.ofthegamesthatwere introducedareDibeke,Kho-kho, Kgati,Diketo Morabaraba.MrandMasilelaadded Afterthelaunch,theparticipants ofDibekeandDiketocompeted attheindigenousgamesregional competition,whichwasheldat theKamagugustadium.The participantsbroughtsomuchfun andalsotaughtstudentshowthe gamesarebeingplayedsince theyareinterestedinbeingpart oftheinitiativebutdonotknow howtoplay UMPparticipatedinthe EhlanzeniIndigenousGames CompetitionDayafterthe launch.Fivestudentswere selectedtorepresentthe EhlanzeniDistrictatthe Provincialgamesthatwillbe heldinMiddleburg.
