to our 8th edition of Pawsome Stories!
Dear friends, supporters and fellow animal lovers,
This year we've decided to break with tradition and shine a light on the heart of what makes the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa truly special – our incredible volunteers, inspiring adopters and the joy-filled moments that define our work.
In these pages, you'll discover uplifting stories about pet adoptions, the remarkable difference our volunteers make and the many reasons they choose to give their time, talent and compassion to our cause.
You'll also read about our deeply rewarding visits to Faircape retirement facilities, where we've not only made a host of new friends but also inspired several new testators who wish to leave a lasting legacy that will change the lives of countless animals for years to come.
Usually, I have the privilege of selecting the stories that go into our annual Pawsome Stories booklet. But this year, I invited Shannon-Lee Beukes, who heads up our Animal Care Centre and coordinates our volunteer activities, to share the spotlight and her unique perspective. I'm sure you'll agree that she's done a magnificent job capturing the spirit of our organisation, promoting adoption and motivating others to get involved.
For us, it's never been about chasing adoption numbers. It's about creating perfect matches, celebrating happy forever homes and building lasting
friendships with our growing family of adopters – many of whom continue to support our mission in the most wonderful ways.
So, to Shannon and her dedicated team, thank you for another outstanding year.
To every adopter who opened their heart and home to a rescue pet – we celebrate you. And to our selfless volunteers – your kindness, commitment and energy remain the heartbeat of the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa.
Until next time – here's to more tails wagging, hearts healing and lives transformed.
Season's greetings and best wishes.

'Tis the season to reflect and be thankful
This past year has been one of growth, transformation and countless heartwarming moments. Our adoption, kennel and volunteer teams have worked hand in hand to ensure every animal in our care is given the best possible chance at a happy and healthy future.
Successful adoptions
Through dedication, compassion and teamwork, we proudly facilitated 151 successful adoptions of dogs (113) and cats (38) from January 2025 – October 2025, each representing a story of hope, healing and second chances. From shy and uncertain arrivals to confident, loving companions, we have witnessed extraordinary transformations that remind us why this work matters so deeply.
Kennel team
Our kennel team continues to provide exceptional daily care to every animal, focusing on rehabilitation, socialisation and enrichment. Many of the dogs and cats who entered our shelter were frightened, injured or abandoned. Thanks to the patience and devotion of our staff, they walk wagging tails, restored trust and bright futures ahead.
Volunteer programme
The volunteer programme has been a vital part of this success. Both local and international volunteers gave their time, kindness and enthusiasm to our animals.
From walks and playtime to assisting with events, training and fundraising. Their commitment and compassion bring warmth to the kennels and joy to the animals in our care.
Together, our teams have not only found homes for hundreds of animals but have also continued to educate our communities about responsible pet ownership, adoption and the importance of compassion towards all living beings.
To every adopter, volunteer, staff member, partnership and supporter, thank you for being part of this incredible journey! Your love and dedication make every rescue possible and every happy ending worth celebrating.
We are filled with gratitude for our dedicated team, our loyal supporters and the families who opened their hearts to adopt. Every adoption, every tail wag and every second chance is a testament to the power of compassion and collaboration.
We look forward to the year ahead with renewed energy and commitment and to continue rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming with the same passion that drives our mission each day. Together, we will keep changing lives, one paw at a time.

EVERY PAWPRINT TELLS A STORY
At the Animal Care Centre, every day is full of hope, care and second chances. From the moment the gates open in the morning, our team sets out to give each animal the love, attention and care they deserve.
The dogs stretch their legs in the yards, tails wagging at the sight of friendly hands. The cats curl up in sunny spots, purring contentedly as volunteers bring food, gentle strokes and soft words. Each animal has a story. Some were abandoned, some surrendered, some rescued from dangerous situations, but here, every one of them gets a chance to heal and thrive.
Our team works tirelessly to provide not only basic care but emotional comfort too. Walks along the promenade, playtime with toys and quiet moments of snuggles help the animals regain trust in humans.
Assisted Pet Therapy visits let some of our dogs share joy and comfort with the wider community, whilst also building their confidence and social skills.
Every day brings little victories: a shy puppy learning to wag its tail, a fearful cat exploring its play area, a long-term resident finding a spark of joy in a cuddle or a treat. These moments are reminders that patience, love and care can change lives.
And the happiest moments? When an animal finds its forever home. That wagging tail as they leave the kennel, the joyful leap into a new family's arms, the start of a life filled with love. These are the moments that make all the hard work worthwhile.
At the Animal Care Centre, every pawprint tells a story of hope, resilience and the power of second chances.
Kindness Speaks Many Languages
Every day at our shelter, kindness speaks many languages.
From morning walks to afternoon enrichment, our volunteers – both local and international – are the heartbeat of what we do. They come from all corners of the world, united by one simple belief: that every animal deserves love, safety, and a second chance.
Our Local Heroes
Our local volunteers bring familiar faces and steady dedication. They give their time before or after work, over weekends, or during school holidays. Whether they're cleaning kennels, preparing meals, brushing dogs, or offering gentle words of comfort to animals still learning to trust, they keep our shelter running and our rescues feeling loved.
A Global Family
Our international volunteers often travel from far and wide to join us. Some stay for weeks, others for months. They may arrive
as strangers, but they quickly become family. Their helping hands, enthusiasm, and compassion breathe new life into the shelter. Together, they walk our dogs, assist during therapy visits, support adoption events, and offer love to every animal they meet.
A Legacy of Compassion
Through every wagging tail, every purr, and every adoption day, our volunteers leave behind something priceless: a legacy of compassion. Many continue to stay connected long after they leave, following the journeys of the animals they've cared for and sharing our mission across the globe. Some even help make international adoptions possible, extending our reach far beyond our local community.
To every volunteer – whether you call our city home or have travelled across the world to join us – thank you. You remind us daily that love knows no borders and that together, we can change lives, one paw at a time.
A helping hand for all creatures great and small
At the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa, our care doesn't end with cats and dogs. Every life matters, whether it has feathers, hooves, or paws.
Over the years, our Animal Care Centre has become a safe haven for many farm animals in distress. From donkeys rescued from neglect to goats found wandering the streets, to hens, pigs, and even sheep, each has found comfort,
kindness, and healing in our care. Our team works tirelessly to ensure these animals receive proper medical treatment, nourishment, and the gentle compassion they deserve. Many go on to find loving new homes or safe farm sanctuaries where they can live out their days in peace.
Because at AWS, every animal – big or small – deserves a second chance.
Some days, love comes on four paws. Our shelter dogs don't just wait for forever homes – they also share comfort, joy, and healing with others.
During our Assisted Pet Therapy visit at Faircape Health, our cuddly team of dogs spent the day spreading smiles. With wagging tails, gentle nuzzles, and happy hearts, they uplifted spirits and brought joy to every patient they met.
Benefits beyond the visit
These visits do more than make people feel better – they help the dogs, too. Meeting new people, practising calm
behaviour, and learning to enjoy affection builds confidence and social skills, making them even more ready for adoption.
Every paw, every wag, and every nuzzle shows families what these wonderful dogs have to give: love, loyalty, and endless companionship. Days like this remind us why every dog deserves a forever home, and why adoption changes lives –for humans and pups alike.
A heartfelt thank you to Faircape for welcoming us and the dogs in our care. We're so grateful for the opportunity to share love and joy with your residents.
Fur-Ever Friends
At Faircape, we appreciate the comfort, companionship, and countless moments of joy that animals bring to our daily lives. That’s why we proudly partner with AWS SA to offer Animal Assisted Activities (AAA) at the healthcare centres in each of our six pet-friendly retirement villages.
Through regular visits, AWS SA volunteers and their animals create uplifting experiences for our residents and staff, promoting emotional connection, reducing stress, and boosting overall well-being.
Our love for animals goes beyond just interactions though. We actively support pet welfare through donation drives, sterilisation campaigns, and initiatives to reduce the overpopulation of cats and dogs.
Because at Faircape, we believe that caring for people means caring for animals too - after all, love is a four-legged word.

Racing Towards Hope
The OUTsurance Gun Run connects shelter dogs with forever families
The sun shone brightly over Cape Town as tails wagged and paws pounded along the route of the 2025 OUTsurance Gun Run and 5km Pet Walk. It was a day full of energy, laughter, and most importantly, hope.
Shelter dogs took centre stage, meeting new people, showing off their playful personalities, and spreading joy wherever they went. Some dogs, like Sasha, a brave three-legged pup, captured hearts instantly and found loving forever homes because of moments like these.
More Than Just a Walk Events like this are more than just fun walks. They give dogs a chance to socialise, build confidence, and learn to trust new friends. These are skills that help them shine when families are ready to adopt. Each wagging tail and happy bark tells a story of resilience, love, and the promise of a new beginning.
The day also brought the community together. Volunteers, staff, and dog lovers shared smiles, donations, and kind
words, all working towards the same goal: helping shelter animals find the homes they deserve. The funds raised will strengthen our rescue and disaster relief efforts, ensuring that more dogs get a second chance at life.
By the end of the day, it was clear: every paw that walked that route was a step closer to a forever family. And for the dogs who stole hearts along the way, this was more than just a walk – it was a walk towards love, hope, and home.
The impact of the OUTsurance Gun Run An interview with Allan
Perrins
Q: What does the OUTsurance Gun Run partnership mean to the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa?
A: It's a powerful platform for us. The Gun Run not only raises funds but also gives us visibility amongst thousands of compassionate South Africans. It helps us connect with potential adopters, donors, and volunteers – all whilst celebrating community and wellness.
Q: How have donations from the Gun Run impacted your work?
A: Hugely! In 2025, we received R100,000, which funded sterilisation and vaccination campaigns in underresourced areas like Hanover Park and Guguletu. These efforts reduce stray and homeless pet populations and improve animal health. Every Rand helps us sterilise, treat, shelter, and rehome animals in need.
Q: Tell us about the Pet Walk – how does it support the AWS?
A: The 5km Pet Walk, introduced in 2022, became a platform for AWS to showcase dogs available for adoption. We bring along dogs wearing "Adopt
Me" bandanas, and it's amazing how many people connect with them. It's not just a walk – it's a chance for these animals to find loving homes.
Q: How do you select which animals participate in the Pet Walk?
A: We choose dogs that are wellsocialised, leash-trained, and comfortable in crowds. It's a great opportunity to showcase their personalities and give them a chance to meet potential adopters in a relaxed, joyful setting.
Q: Are there any success stories from previous Gun Runs you'd like to share?
A: Absolutely! All of the dogs that participated in last year's Pet Walk were adopted by race-goers, including an adorable three-legged dog named Sasha. She now lives in Table View and is thriving. Stories like that make it all worthwhile.
Q: What are some of the biggest challenges AWS faces right now?
A: The demand for veterinary care in impoverished communities is overwhelming. We're constantly stretched – financially and logistically. Events like the OUTsurance Gun Run help us bridge that gap and continue our mission of compassionate care.
Q: What are your hopes for this year's OUTsurance Gun Run partnership?
A: We hope to raise even more funds for our sterilisation and rescue programmes, and of course, find forever homes for some of our animals. But more than that, we want to inspire people to get involved – whether through adoption, volunteering, or simply spreading the word.
A special day at Cape Town Montessori School
Our Education and Outreach Team had the joy of spending a day at Cape Town Montessori School – and what a day it was! The learners were brimming with curiosity, asking thoughtful questions and engaging with so much enthusiasm.
It was also an extra special day for one of our beloved dogs, Simba. After spending over a year in our care, this was his very last school visit before heading off to his forever family. He soaked up every ounce of love and attention from the children, leaving us with memories we'll treasure forever. While we'll miss him dearly at our visits, our hearts are full knowing that Simba is finally going home.
A heartfelt thank you to the learners, educators, and parents of Cape Town Montessori School for welcoming us so warmly and for your generous Buckets of Love, which will go a long way in caring for the animals still waiting for their chance at happiness.
Sunset strolls Sunset strolls
A bridge to forever homes
Some of our shelter dogs had a very special outing – a sunset stroll along the promenade! This wasn't just any walk. Our team, together with the wonderful friends from Lula Business Funding, spent the afternoon giving the dogs exercise, attention, and a chance to explore the world beyond the shelter walls.
Building confidence, one pawprint at a time
These walks do more than make the dogs happy. They help them build confidence, social skills, and trust in people. By meeting new friends, learning to walk calmly on a lead, and enjoying gentle cuddles, the dogs become more ready for the forever homes they've been dreaming of.
Every wagging tail and every happy pawprint on the sand is a step closer to adoption. These moments show families the true personalities of the dogs: their playful spirit, their gentle hearts, and their endless capacity for love.
Sunset strolls like this remind us all why adoption matters. Each adventure is a bridge from life in the shelter to a loving family. It's a journey that turns hope into happily ever after.
WHERE COMPASSION MEETS UNDERSTANDING
Our Animal Care Squad joined Tafelberg School's market, filled with laughter, smiles, and open hearts.
A special place with a special mission Tafelberg School is a special place. It's a nurturing environment that supports learners with disabilities and emotional vulnerabilities. Every child is celebrated for who they are, and compassion is woven into everything they do.
For us at the shelter, that message deeply resonates. Every animal that enters our care carries their own story, often one of pain, neglect, or abandonment. Just like people, they too need patience, understanding, and love to heal.
Three little hearts learning to trust again Amongst the group that joined us that day were three little Maltese dogs: tiny in size but mighty in spirit. Once neglected and surrendered, they arrived at the
shelter scared and unsure of the world around them. Through gentle care, medical attention, and endless love, their transformation has been nothing short of inspiring.
Physically, they have blossomed. Their soft coats now gleam with health and hope. But it's their emotional journey that truly touches the heart. Outings like this one to Tafelberg School help them take brave steps towards trusting again. As they wagged their tails, received gentle pats, and soaked up affection from the learners, you could see their walls beginning to crumble.
Healing happens when compassion meets understanding. The connection shared between the children and our little Maltese trio was proof that kindness knows no bounds – it bridges the gap between human and animal, heart to heart.
Simba's Journey from chains to cherished
For most of his life, Simba knew only pain. He was chained so tightly that the cruel metal embedded into his neck. Days turned into years, and hope seemed far away for this gentle, handsome boy.
A promise of a better future
When Simba came into our care, we promised him that his past would not define his future. For almost two years, we shared his story, hoping for the miracle he so deeply deserved.
That miracle arrived in the form of a foster family. At first, it wasn't easy – Simba's curiosity around the resident cat kept everyone on their toes. But with patience, guidance, and endless love, something beautiful happened. He began to heal, to trust, and to shine.
The moment we had all been waiting for And then came the moment we had all been waiting for – his foster family could no longer imagine life without him. They made it official.
Today, Simba is no longer the boy in chains. He is a cherished family member,
loved beyond measure. His days of pain are far behind him, and his future is filled with warmth, joy, and freedom.
Simba, we are so proud of you. You finally have the life you always deserved.

Raine's Journey from storm to sunshine
Raine's journey began on a rainy day, when she was found abandoned on the motorway – cold, soaked to the bone, and desperately trying to survive. From that moment on, her life began to change. She was safe, she was loved, and she slowly blossomed into the most beautiful, confident little soul.
A community's Love
For a while, she was surrounded by endless kindness, smothered with cuddles, cheered on by supporters, and showered with name suggestions until she became "Raine," the perfect name for the girl rescued from the storm. The happy ending she deserved And then, the best part of her story arrived. Raine found her forever family. From the very first moment, they adored her. She was no longer a lonely pup on a wet road, but a cherished family member, treasured beyond measure.
Raine's journey had a beautiful ending. Her new family already loved her so deeply, and she went on to live the joyful, happy life she truly deserved.
Kobe's Second Chance
A story of patience and perfect timing
Kobe's path to happiness was not an easy one. Two years ago, he was surrendered by his family. Not long after, he was adopted, but his second chance was cut short when he was returned, simply for being a dog.
Back at our shelter, we welcomed Kobe with open arms. For over a year, he lived in our kennels, waiting, watching, and hoping. Despite everything, he never lost his sweet nature or his spark. He stole the hearts of staff, volunteers, and visitors alike, each of us knowing that his perfect family was still out there.
And then, it finally happened.
Kobe met the family who would love him exactly as he is. The boy who once faced rejection now has a forever home filled with patience, joy, and unconditional love.
Kobe, we are so proud of you. Go and live your happily ever after, sweet boy –you deserve every moment of it.
Mike’s New Beginning Mike’s New Beginning
Mike is a four-year-old Pug with a heart of gold and the sweetest, most hopeful eyes. His life took an unexpected turn when he was surrendered to our shelter – not because of anything he did, but because his family became too busy with renovations. Whilst their world changed by choice, Mike's fell apart without warning.
A spirit that never wavered
Through it all, Mike never lost his loving spirit. This sturdy little bundle of joy continued to greet each day with wagging excitement, ready for a run in the yard and just as ready for couch cuddles afterwards.
A perfect match
And then, everything changed again – this time for the better. Mike found his forever family! Not only did he gain humans who
will never be too busy for his affection, but he also gained two new brothers. The three of them clicked instantly, filling their home with laughter, playful energy, and unconditional love.
Watching Mike blossom in his new family reminds us why we do what we do: every dog deserves a second chance and a place to truly belong.
Our sweetest potato, Mike, has truly landed on his feet. He has found a family that adores him just as much as we do, and we couldn't be happier for this perfect match.
Here's to Mike – from heartbreak to happiness, his story is a beautiful reminder of resilience, hope, and love.
Harry's Healing
A testament to love and patience
When Harry arrived at our shelter, he was a fragile 10-year-old boy carrying the weight of neglect. Partially blind and severely matted, his little paw was so badly tangled in fur that he nearly lost it. Thanks to the quick and careful work of our medical team, his paw – and his chance at a future – was saved.
Healing the invisible wounds
But Harry's deepest wounds weren't the ones we could see. He kept to himself, hesitant and afraid, as if unsure whether love could ever be safe again. For weeks, it seemed his trust was locked away.
Yet, with time and tenderness, something beautiful happened. Our team surrounded Harry with patience and care, showing him, day by day, that he was finally safe. Slowly, his walls began to crumble. And when they did, the sweetest soul stepped forward: gentle, affectionate, and so ready to love.
A happy ending worth waiting for Today, Harry has the happy ending he always deserved. He's in a forever home where he is adored beyond measure, surrounded by warmth, cuddles, and kindness. Harry's story is a reminder of why we never give up.
Moonlight From struggles to snuggles
Moonlight's story began in the Liesbeek River canal, where her brave rescue touched countless hearts. From that very moment, one special family followed her journey closely, quietly hoping she might one day become part of theirs. That dream has now come true. Moonlight is finally home.
Her new mom and dad shared how fate brought them together:
"Moonlight's Facebook post pulled on our heartstrings when we realised she was the same dog rescued from our local canal in January this year. Her friendly face reminded us of our beloved Africanus, whom we had lost in March. We decided to meet her, and while she first seemed a little aloof, everything changed when she met our dogs, Elektra and Porsche. Her playful side shone through, and we knew she belonged with us."
Though Moonlight was hesitant to step indoors at first, she soon began to trust the rhythms of her new home. Day by day, she warmed to the love surrounding her, and it wasn't long before she fully embraced her new life. She even took to her new name, Miura – named after a classic Italian sports car – racing right into her family's hearts forever.
From canal to couch, from struggles to snuggles, Moonlight's story is proof of the magic that happens when hope, patience, and love come together. Today, she is exactly where she belongs. She is cherished, safe, and adored.
How Lucky became JC's new best buddy A Mother's Story
I am a mother of a 14-year-old autistic pre-verbal boy named JC. Two months ago, we lost our two-year-old dog Trickster unexpectedly, and though the shoes are very difficult to fill, we thank the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa Adoption Centre for bringing the new puppy Lucky into our lives.
When JC was very young, he was viciously attacked by dogs and developed a phobia of dogs, until Trickster came. The heartbreak we felt as a family when Trickster went in for a minor operation and didn't come home is difficult to describe. My son and Trickster had grown to be best friends, whereby Trickster was his protector and running buddy, and JC
would sneak him some meat every now and then. He understood my son's needs, never jumped on him or intruded in his space. But most importantly, he brought my son so much joy, evident in how much he laughed and exclaimed joyfully when they interacted.
When we visited Trickster to say goodbye, I could tell my son did not understand what was happening – Trickster had only gone in for something minor after all. This added to my sorrow, knowing my son would not understand why his friend was gone. Given the strong bond they had developed, I started to worry if I was ever going to find another dog like him: a dog who understood my son with no words needed, a dog that protected my son like I would myself. When JC started calling for Trickster days after his passing, I realised we were going to have to try. This dog that had become part of the family would be impossible to replace, but we could start again.
When we first met Lucky, a small loving puppy that immediately took to me, we knew he would be our lucky star.
Grieving remains difficult, especially for children with autism. But since Lucky came to us, JC is calmer and enjoys running around once more. He calls the puppy Trickster, an ode to his pal, and the two seem to be building a bond already.
We had not expected a dog to have such an impact in our lives the way Trickster did, but we are forever grateful. We also are grateful to the Adoption team for introducing us to Lucky and for giving my son a best buddy once more.
A 13-year wait for 'home' Karnallie's Miracle Karnallie's Miracle
This is the story of a little dog who never gave up – and the kind souls who refused to give up on him.
Most weekends at the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa feel like a rollercoaster, full of ups and downs. But several Sundays past brought a moment we will never forget – the rescue of a 15-year-old Miniature Schnauzer named Karnallie.
Karnallie was found wandering down busy Koeberg Road, terrified and disorientated. A compassionate passer-by noticed his panic and rushed home to fetch a dressing gown and a laundry basket to safely catch him. At first, Karnallie was frightened and defensive, even attempting to bite. But with patience, gentleness, and time, the rescuer earned his trust. Karnallie eventually calmed, accepted food and water, and allowed himself to be comforted.
He was taken to Forest Drive Veterinary Surgery in Pinelands, who immediately reached out to us for further care. A full examination revealed just how much this little dog had endured – he was completely blind from cataracts, had severely neglected teeth, was anxious and underweight, and his coat was thick with painful mats. Hidden beneath them, a piece of wire had become embedded in his leg – a silent reminder of the suffering he had quietly carried for years.
But Karnallie had two blessings: a kind stranger who refused to walk away, and a microchip that still held the key to his past.
When we contacted the number registered to his microchip, we discovered that Karnallie had been stolen from his
home in Oranjezicht 13 years ago. His family had searched for months before heartbreakingly giving up hope. Over the years, they had adopted other rescues and were no longer in a position to take him back – but they were deeply grateful to know he was alive and safe.
When his rescuer heard their story, he didn't hesitate – he opened his heart and his home to Karnallie. He promised that this brave little dog would spend the rest of his days surrounded by love, warmth, and peace.
After more than a decade of hardship, Karnallie – renamed Rufus – finally found his way home. Not the one he had lost, but the one he had always deserved.
A Kitten's Rescue Story
Caught in wire, freed by
A tiny kitten from Hanover Park, thought to be a stray, was found entangled in a razor wire barrier nearly two metres off the ground.
A delicate rescue
Our Inspectorate Team rushed to the scene. Using a ladder, they carefully climbed to where the frightened kitten hung suspended, her small body caught fast in the cruel metal. One team member gently cradled her trembling frame whilst another skilfully clipped away at the razor wire that had become embedded in her soft underbelly.
The moment she was freed, she was rushed to our hospital theatre, where our
compassion
compassionate surgical team worked tirelessly to remove the wire that had pierced her tummy. The operation was delicate and demanding, but thanks to their expertise, and a little fighting spirit from the kitten herself, it was a success.
The road to recovery
In the days that followed, she recovered in the warmth of a loving foster home. There, she received gentle care, nutritious food, and, perhaps most importantly, kindness. With each passing day, she grew stronger, her wounds healing, her trust returning, her spirit shining through once more.
A happy ending
Today, this once-stricken kitten has made a complete transformation. Her coat gleams, her eyes sparkle with curiosity, and her playful nature fills her new home with joy. She has found her forever family, who love her to bits and can't imagine life without their precious girl.
Leah
From broken leg to boundless love
Leah was just a tiny little pup when she was surrendered, unwanted and facing an unthinkable fate. Her previous owners wanted to have her euthanised because she had a badly broken leg and, in their eyes, would "serve no purpose" in the future.
But when we looked into Leah's eyes, we saw something different – she had such hopeful eyes. We knew we couldn't let her life end that way.
Our Office Manager, Carmen, stepped in and offered to foster Leah, determined to help her heal and thrive. Our hospital team carefully repaired her fractured leg, and Leah spent months in a cast, bravely enduring every step of the long recovery.
The journey wasn't easy, but Carmen never gave up on her, and neither did our team. With patience, love, and care, Leah transformed from a fragile little pup into a strong, happy, and confident dog.
Today, Leah is thriving. She's a big girl now who loves her mum to bits. She is enjoying breakfast at the table, cuddling on the bed, and playing endlessly with her furry siblings.
Leah's story is a reminder that with love and compassion, even the most broken beginnings can lead to the most beautiful lives.
Mina Moo
From field of fear to a home full of love
When Mina Moo was first found, she was hiding in a field, deep inside a hole where she had carefully tucked away her three tiny puppies to keep them safe.
She arrived at our Animal Care Centre frightened, but there was a gentleness in her eyes, a quiet trust that grew stronger each day. She allowed us to meet her little family and, with time, began to open her heart to affection and love.
As the weeks passed, her puppies were adopted into wonderful homes, whilst Mina Moo, now called Penny, stayed behind, waiting for her turn. During that time, she truly blossomed. Once timid, she became a loving, affectionate girl who
adored cuddles and won over every staff member and volunteer she met.
Then one day, her forever family found her. Lucille saw Penny's post on Facebook and fell instantly in love. When they met, it was as if the final piece of a puzzle had clicked into place.
Today, Penny lives a joyful life with her adoring family and her best friend – the household cat. The two are inseparable, and we still receive regular updates that fill our hearts with happiness.
From a field of fear to a home filled with love – we are so glad that Penny's story had such a happy ending.
Pamie's Story
The dog who chose her own rescue
One afternoon, as our Animal Care Centre staff were leaving at the end of the day, they noticed a dog quietly sitting at the gate. She seemed to have chosen our centre as her safe haven, waiting patiently as if she knew she was in the right place.
A name of honour
We welcomed her in, and from the moment she stepped inside, it was clear she felt at home.
A short time later, our Patron, Neville Isdell, who sadly lost his beloved wife, Pamela – also a long-time Patron of our society – visited us. We asked him to give this gentle dog a name. Neville chose "Pamie", in loving memory and honour of his late wife, Pamela.
Destiny at first sight
When Lynne visited the Animal Welfare Society with her daughter, she hadn't planned on adopting a dog. But as they walked past the play area, one little dog
followed them along the fence, stopping often to greet them.
Her daughter smiled and said, "Mum, she has your name on her forehead!"
And that was that. Pamie was coming home.
Despite being freshly shaved and a little unsure, Pamie settled instantly into a busy home with other dogs and cats. She claimed her spot on Gypsy's bed (their dog who crossed the rainbow bridge) and has slept there ever since.
Living her best life
Eight months later, her soft wavy coat has grown beautifully, her confidence has bloomed, and she follows Lynne everywhere. Completely house-trained, gentle, and social, Pamie is utterly adored.
"I love her so much," says Lynne.

Lyla's Journey From Cape Town to Belgium – A Love Story
This story started quite a few years ago, marking the beginning of a series of amazing adventures and thousands of photos. We have shared so many beautiful moments since then. But first, I have to go back to the beginning: my search for a dog.
I dreamed of a loyal four-legged friend, but which breed was the right fit for me? A cheerful Pomeranian? A sturdy Husky? A loyal Japanese Akita? I was lost in a sea of breeds, wondering which one would best suit my life.
The decision was unexpectedly made by me on a dark October evening a few years ago. The Coronavirus pandemic was still present, and travelling was practically impossible. Luckily, my youngest sister was volunteering at a shelter in South Africa at that time. She sent pictures of all the dogs in our family group chat – and that's when I saw her for the first time: Lyla.
Not in real life, but that one photo was enough; my heart was immediately lost. I was in love. From that moment on, I started researching what I needed to do to adopt a dog from so far away.
Within a few days, I was certain: I wanted Lyla. From then on, we put everything in motion. There was a tremendous amount of work to be done: chipping, vaccinations, blood tests... But after a while, everything was in order, and the countdown could begin. Counting down to March, the month of the flight to Cape Town.
No sooner said than done. Early March, my sister, my mother, and I departed. Once there, the only thing I wanted was to go straight to Lyla. And there I saw her, for the first time.
When I saw her, I instantly knew I had made the right choice. Lyla was sweet and playful, but also scared. Yet, we immediately had a bond. From that moment, we could work together on building trust. Every day to the shelter, short walks, some playtime, but most importantly: spending time with her.
After a few days, we took the next step: Lyla came with us to our hotel. There, she blossomed completely. The playful, cheerful Lyla fully emerged for the first time!
Shortly after, the big journey to Belgium began, where she would go to her forever home and the next adventures truly started.
Once in Belgium, our first, and for Lyla, biggest adventure started: meeting our cats and the snow. Believe me, the transition from the South African 20+ degrees to the Belgian –3 degrees was a shock! Still, it didn't hold Lyla back. She immediately started running, rolling, and especially playing exuberantly in the white carpet of snow.
The winter walks flew by and gave way to the first beautiful spring outings. Lyla, my loyal companion, now goes everywhere with me. But to be honest, it didn't go well from day one. She loved walking, but the car... that was the complete opposite.
After a lot of patience, training, and especially many car rides to my girlfriend's house, to my work, and to lovely forest walks, it got better every single time. Now she can truly go everywhere with me. This allowed us to make wonderful new memories together.
From long walks in the woods to a visit to the village fair, or even enjoying a refreshing walk on the beach, Lyla is always ready, with her four paws and her unmistakably playful nature.
Now, a few years later, Lyla is still the best choice we've ever made. She has met many new people and dog friends, and we truly couldn't live without her anymore.
Every day is a new adventure, every moment is beautiful, and every day brings a cherished new memory.
Blaze
Love in the land of tulips
Three years ago, I decided I wanted to travel and do some volunteering. After searching for a while, I stumbled upon the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa in Cape Town. I've loved dogs my whole life, and the idea of helping them while exploring a new city sounded like a dream come true!
When I arrived at the shelter, we were given a tour. It's quite a big place, with so many dogs – honestly, a dream for me. Our tasks as volunteers included helping the staff clean the cages and, of course, taking the dogs out for walks. From the very first day I met Blaze, something felt special. The way she looked at me with those amazing, intelligent eyes... If you scroll through the messages I sent my mum that first day, about 90% of them are pictures of her.
Of course, just seeing a dog doesn't tell you everything about their character. But as time went by, I realised she was every bit as wonderful as I had imagined. She became my little buddy during the month I spent there, and when it was time to leave, I couldn't imagine never seeing her again. So... adopting her was really the only logical choice.
The adoption process itself was quite straightforward, but getting her all the way to the Netherlands turned out to be a bit more complicated – especially since I wasn't in the country anymore. Thankfully, with the help of an amazing organisation, I got all the paperwork sorted, and after six months, she was finally ready to travel!
On 8 September 2023, she arrived in the Netherlands. My mom and sister came with me to pick her up, and I can't even describe how happy I was to see her again. She was exhausted after the long flight and slept beside me the whole way home. When we arrived, she got to meet her four new brothers and sisters. They can be quite picky with new dogs, but their first meeting went incredibly well, and soon it felt like she had always been part of the family.
In the beginning, she struggled a bit with separation anxiety. Who could blame her?
After not having a real home for so long, I can only imagine how stressful it must have been every time we left. Who knew if we'd come back? But slowly and surely, she grew more confident, both inside and outside. She started coming everywhere with me: on holidays, to social outings, to work, family events... basically anywhere she was allowed.
I'm so thankful to the people at the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa for trusting me enough to adopt her. I've been her support through many scary moments, and she's been mine. I honestly can't imagine my life without my little girl.
Salah and Axelle Facing fears and finding forever love Salah and Axelle
When Axelle first joined our animal welfare family as a volunteer, she never imagined that one of the dogs she helped care for would soon steal her heart. Sweet and soft-spoken, Axelle had always been a little afraid of dogs until she met Salah.
Salah, a gentle rescue with eyes full of hope, seemed to sense Axelle's hesitation. With patience and quiet affection, she showed Axelle that love and trust could grow in the most unexpected ways. Day by day, fear turned into friendship, and friendship blossomed into an unbreakable bond.
After months of preparation and anticipation, Salah's journey to Switzerland finally began. With her tail wagging and heart full of excitement, she boarded her flight to meet her new mum, ready to start a beautiful new life together.
Today, Salah is thriving. She adores her toys, loves playing in the rain, and fills every moment with joy. Her story is a shining reminder of how love knows no boundaries.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our incredible hospital team and to Forest Drive Vet for ensuring Salah's health checks and titre tests were handled with the utmost care. Our gratitude also goes to Animal Travel Services for making her journey seamless and safe. And most importantly, a special thank-you to Axelle, for opening her heart and home to Salah, and showing that sometimes, the most beautiful bonds are the ones we never saw coming.
Benji and Sophie A transatlantic journey to forever
Benji and Sophie's journey is a story of love that crossed continents. Two rescue souls from Cape Town who, against all odds, found their forever home together – all thanks to one very special person.
During her time volunteering at our Animal Care Centre, Susan, a devoted animal lover from the United States, met Benji and Sophie. It was love at first sight. Their gentle spirits and playful hearts captured hers completely. What began as a few moments of connection soon grew into something life-changing. Susan knew she couldn't leave them behind.
After months of preparation, the big day finally arrived. At sunrise, Benji and Sophie began their long adventure from Cape Town to Johannesburg, then onwards to Nairobi, and finally across the Atlantic to New York City.
At the same time, Susan was already on her own journey, driving from Illinois to New York to meet her beloved dogs. After all the waiting, planning, and hoping, the moment finally came. At 5:12 AM South African time, Benji and Sophie touched
down in New York. They were safe, sound, and ready to begin the rest of their lives.
After a well-deserved rest at a pet-friendly hotel in the Big Apple, they began the final leg of their adventure – a 14-hour road trip to Illinois filled with cuddles, rest stops, and excitement. Today, Benji and Sophie are home at last: happy, loved, and thriving. Their days are now filled with playtime, comfort, and the unbreakable bond they share with Susan.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our incredible hospital team, our dedicated volunteers, and Forest Drive Vet for ensuring Benji and Sophie's health, safety, and comfort throughout their journey. And a special thank-you to PETport Cape Town for making their travel seamless and safe. Most of all, we thank Susan, for opening her heart and home to not just one, but two extraordinary companions.
From Cape Town to Illinois, their journey reminds us that love knows no distance and every animal deserves a chance to find their forever home.
Nami's Journey Riding the waves home: From Gugulethu to Berlin
From the township of Gugulethu to the heart of Berlin, Nami's story is a beautiful journey of trust, love, and transformation.
When Charlotte first joined our Animal Care Centre as a volunteer, she never expected to find a best friend waiting for her. Amongst the many dogs in our care, one gentle girl stood out – quiet yet full of soul. Charlotte was drawn to her instantly, and Nami, sensing her kindness, only wanted to stay close. It was the beginning of a bond that neither time nor distance could break.
Nami's name means "wave" – a perfect reflection of her journey and spirit. She has weathered her own storms and now rides the calm tides towards a life filled with love, safety, and joy.
After months of preparation and anticipation, Nami boarded her flight to Germany. And when she finally touched
down in Berlin, her heart knew exactly where she was – she was home. One familiar scent, one beloved voice, and in an instant, she was reunited with the person who had changed her life forever.
Today, Nami is thriving. She's exploring her new world with curiosity and confidence, surrounded by the love she always deserved.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our incredible hospital team and Forest Drive Vet for their dedicated care in Nami's health checks and preparations, and to Animal Travel Services for ensuring her journey was smooth and safe. And most of all, to Charlotte, for opening her heart and home to a girl who will forever be a symbol of love without borders.
Because every wave finds its shore, and Nami has finally found hers.
Carmen's Story
From Hanover Park mom to London's beloved
Carmen's story began during our Mass Pet Sterilisation Campaign in Hanover Park. She was surrendered by a family who could no longer care for her – a gentle, loving dog with a rounded belly, just days away from becoming a mom.
Only two days after arriving in our care, Carmen gave birth to a beautiful litter of puppies. Each one was strikingly unique, with their own markings and personalities. It was a joy to watch them grow, and soon every one of her pups found their forever home with wonderful families.
Carmen stayed with us a little longer, patiently waiting for her own special person to come along. Then, in August 2023, that moment arrived. Sandra, a compassionate volunteer visiting all the way from London, met Carmen and instantly fell in love. Their connection was undeniable – a bond that felt meant to be.
Before long, Carmen's flight was booked, and she began a new chapter of her life across the ocean. From being surrendered in Hanover Park to finding love and comfort in London, Carmen's journey reminds us that every rescue story, no matter where it starts, deserves a happy ending.
Winx
In 2024, 185 unwanted dogs and puppies found safety and hope within our care. Amongst them, a brave little soul named Winx and his two siblings. The trio started life in foster care, where they received the love and attention they needed before being ready for adoption.
Winx's journey, however, wasn't an easy one. He arrived with a badly damaged eye that had to be surgically removed. Despite the odds stacked against him, Winx never lost his gentle spirit or his hopeful heart.
Once healed, and after his siblings found their forever homes, Winx set out to win the hearts of everyone who passed his kennel. With his one bright eye, wagging tail, and unbreakable spirit, he managed to do just that.
In early January, fate stepped in when Victoria, one of our volunteers from the UK, met Winx. From the very first moment, a special bond began to form between them. Every day, Victoria would spend time with him, sitting quietly by his side, offering treats, and giving him the affection he so deeply craved.
When it came time for Victoria to return home, she knew she couldn't leave without him. She made the life-changing decision to adopt Winx and give him the loving home he had been waiting for.
On the morning of her departure, Victoria gave Winx a long, heartfelt hug and promised she would see him soon. Winx pressed his little nose through the wire mesh and gave her a goodbye lick, his tail wagging as if he understood every word.
After months of waiting and preparation, the big day finally arrived. Winx touched down safely at Heathrow International
One Eye, One Heart, One Perfect Home
Airport, ready to begin a brand-new adventure with his best friend by his side.
From an uncertain beginning to a life filled with love, Winx reminds us that true connection knows no distance and that every animal, no matter their past or imperfections, deserves their happily ever after.
BUILDING A KINDER FUTURE
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH AT AWS SA
At the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa, we believe that true change begins with education. Our Animal Care Centre proudly extends its work beyond our shelter gates, reaching into schools, crèches, and communities to teach compassion, kindness, and responsible pet ownership.
Teaching Compassion in Action
Our Education Team visits classrooms and community halls where children and adults alike learn how to care for their pets, understand animal behaviour, and recognise the importance of sterilisation, proper nutrition, and shelter.
Through interactive talks, demonstrations, and heart-warming meet-and-greets with some of our rescued animals, we encourage empathy and respect for all living creatures. These sessions often spark thoughtful questions and inspire young minds to become the next generation of animal advocates.
Creating Lasting Change
By fostering compassion early, we aim to create communities where animals are treated with love, dignity, and understanding – ensuring a kinder future for both people and pets alike.
Because education doesn't just save animals; it transforms lives.
It's a wrap!
