A Message from One of Our Directors

As 2025 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on what has been a fast-paced and fulfilling year for Faircape Life. Time truly does fly when one is surrounded by growth, community, and purpose. Over the past year, we have had the privilege of welcoming a number of new residents into our estates, each adding their own energy and warmth to our villages.

When we ask new residents what drew them to Faircape Life, we are often humbled by their replies. Many tell us that it was their friends’ happiness and satisfaction that inspired their decision; others speak fondly of the vibrant sense of community and the active, secure lifestyle that defines our estates. While our newly refurbished homes, world class healthcare centre, manicured gardens, and luxury facilities certainly play their part, I am convinced that the true value of Faircape Life lies in its people. Finding an established community of like-minded individuals and retiring in a safe, harmonious environment is, in my view, truly priceless.

Our dedicated Faircape Life team continues to focus on every detail - from maintenance, security, and landscaping to catering, healthcare, and financial management. Yet, for all that we do to create the best possible environment for retirement living, it is ultimately our residents who transform our estates from houses into homes.

We are deeply appreciative of the champions who lead bridge groups, hikes and art classes (to name a few), the tireless entertainment committee members who plan endless events, the trustees who give so much of their time and enthusiasm, volunteer fire zone wardens, healthcare

volunteers, and the spirited participants who represent their villages in inter-estate tournaments. Each person contributes in their own unique way to the warmth and vibrancy that make Faircape Life so distinctive.

Of course, no community is without its moments of challenge, and we do occasionally hear a resident express a concern - but what always stands out is the sentiment that follows: “I love living here and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” That, more than anything, reaffirms why we do what we do.

This year, we have also made tangible improvements across our estates - from new walking paths and landscaping upgrades to the completion of additional homes that expand our portfolio. We continue to seek ways to enhance our spaces and optimise every estate for the benefit of all residents. The launch of the My Estate Life App has further simplified daily living, offering residents a user-friendly way to book services, access information, and stay connected.

Faircape Health remains the Western Cape’s most established interdisciplinary long-term and sub-acute facility recognised for clinical excellence, compassionate service and outstanding patient outcomes. We encourage our village residents to make use of the array of medical and health professionals on their door step from on-site Doctors, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists to Social Workers, Pharmacists and a Dietitian. The Faircape Health team has an integrated and passionate approach to longevity and wellness using the latest international techniques and technology.

As we look to the future, our focus remains clear: to strengthen Faircape Life’s position as the benchmark for excellence in retirement living, where quality, innovation, and community converge to create an exceptional standard of life for every resident.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE RIGHTS AT FAIRCAPE LIFE

Finding the right place to retire is important, but finding a lifestyle that brings comfort, security, and lasting financial peace matters even more.

Life Rights at a Faircape Life Village makes that choice easier, offering a clear path to a rewarding retirement surrounded by care, community, and peace of mind.

Under The Housing Schemes for Retired Persons Act of 1988, a Life Right gives you the guaranteed security of a home for life, while Faircape’s six premier retirement villages combine luxury, convenience, and a vibrant social atmosphere.

FOUR WAYS LIFE RIGHTS MAKE RETIREMENT EASIER

1. Zero Transfer Costs

Life Rights are designed to keep your finances simple and predictable. There are no transfer duties, VAT, or costly deed registrations to worry about. As there is no requirement to register at the Deeds Office, moving in is quick and seamless, often completed in just a few days.

2. Transparent Finances

At Faircape Life, we maintain transparent levies with clear forecasting, so you always know exactly where you stand. As a Life Rights holder, you are not liable for special levies or unexpected costs. Faircape absorbs any shortfall between collected levies and actual operating expenses, giving you greater financial certainty. On top of that, the Act protects residents with strict rules on levy management and developer accountability.

3. Straight-Forward Estate Planning

Life Rights simplifies estate planning. When the agreement ends, your estate receives a refund, giving your loved ones financial certainty.

4. Long-Term Quality and Care

Faircape retains ownership of all Life Right properties and is committed to maintaining and enhancing every village. Ongoing upgrades, meticulous upkeep, and attention to detail ensure your home and community remain a place to be proud of. Residents also enjoy 24/7 security, well-maintained communal spaces, and a range of lifestyle amenities designed to make daily life both safe and delightful.

Enjoy retirement the way it should be lived at Faircape Life.

FAIRCAPE LADIES STEENBERG CLASSIC GOLF DAY 2025

Faircape Ladies Steenberg Classic Golf Day 2025 served up a day of flair, fun, and fierce competition. The course was a runway of tropical elegance, with participants embracing this year’s vibrant theme in full swing.

Laughter, camaraderie, and spirited play filled the day, making it one for the memory books. The festivities culminated in a chic dinner and prize-giving, celebrating the skill, style, and teamwork of every participant.

As the days grow longer, so does our calendar. We have a fantastic line-up of activities planned from our popular Village braais, games days, engaging talks in the Activity Centre, and fun bus outings.

YOLANDI BEADSWORTH
VILLAGE MANAGER AT BRIDGEWATER

What a winter it’s been! We certainly experienced our fair share of cold and wet weather, so it’s wonderful to finally be enjoying the beautiful sunshine as we head into the festive season.

As the days grow longer, so does our calendar. We have a fantastic line-up of activities planned from our popular Village braais, game days, engaging talks in the Activity Centre, and fun bus outings. Keep an eye on the notice board for details, as you don’t want to miss out.

One of the most exciting additions to our activity schedule is the introduction of our new Pickleball outing to the Lourensford Pickleball courts. Our team has been practising hard to win the Inter-Village Pickleball Cup that takes place annually, and everyone is welcome to join us on the monthly Pickleball outing, even if it’s just to spectate. We also continue to host our beloved Games Friday in the Games Room. Residents are also enjoying lively rounds of pool, snooker, cornhole, and darts. These friendly competitions are a fantastic way to socialise, stay active and meet new friends.

We would also like to extend a warm welcome to all our new residents who have recently joined the Village. We’re so pleased to have you here and hope you’re settling in well.

Our family is certainly growing and we are very excited about the new developments. For now, there are seven brand-new units, with more to follow at a later stage. These modern two-bedroom-two-bathroom units have spacious layouts of between 90m2 to 102m2 and prices start from R3 million.

Our gardens are truly a sight to behold, bursting with life and colour. The vibrant blooms and lush greenery provide a serene and beautiful environment and we often see residents strolling through the pathways, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the fragrant blossoms. It’s the perfect place to relax, read a book, or simply take in the beauty of nature while enjoying a glass of wine. We are so proud of our dedicated gardening team who work tirelessly to maintain these exquisite spaces.

As we look forward to the rest of the summer, we wish everyone a happy and healthy festive season filled with joy and good company. Thank you for being such an amazing community and for making our Village the wonderful place it is today.

ANNUAL

INTER-VILLAGE PICKLEBALL TOURNAMENT

The annual Inter-Village Pickleball Tournament was hosted by Faircape Life Bridgewater at the Lourensford Padel and Pickleball Club in Somerset West in May 2025.

It was a lively event that saw enthusiastic participation from residents at Faircape Life Bridgewater, Faircape Life Noordhoek, and Faircape Life Heritage. In a closely contested series of matches, Faircape Life Heritage emerged victorious, claiming the coveted trophy.

Spurred by a healthy competitive spirit, Faircape Life Bridgewater residents have already begun intensive training, and are determined to secure a win in the 2026 tournament. Watch this space!

Taste of Tradition

AT VAN RYN’S

Our residents recently enjoyed an exquisite brandy tasting experience at the prestigious Van Ryn’s Distillery in Stellenbosch. The outing, meticulously organised, promised a morning of refined tastes and fascinating insights into the art of brandy making.

Upon arrival, residents were warmly welcomed and guided through the distillery, learning about the rich history and intricate processes involved in crafting Van Ryn’s worldrenowned brandies.

The highlight of the visit was, of course, the tasting session. Residents savoured a selection of premium brandies, appreciating their subtle nuances and complex flavours. The knowledgeable hosts provided engaging commentary, enhancing the sensory experience with historical anecdotes and production details.

Beyond the tasting, the picturesque setting of the distillery, with its charming architecture and lush gardens, provided a perfect backdrop for socialising and relaxation. Residents exchanged pleasantries, sharing their impressions of the brandies and enjoying the stunning atmosphere.

The brandy tasting was a resounding success, offering residents a memorable blend of cultural enrichment, delightful indulgence, and wonderful camaraderie. It was an afternoon truly well spent, leaving everyone with a deeper appreciation for fine brandy and the cherished moments shared among friends.

FRIDAY FUN AT

Bridgewater’s Games Afternoon

What started as a Friday afternoon darts and cornhole event has blossomed into a beloved weekly tradition. The highlyanticipated inter-house tournament between the ladies and gentlemen recently concluded, with the gentlemen emerging victorious by a narrow margin. The ladies did prove to be formidable competitors, hot on their heels until the very end.

The recent additions of snooker and pool have made these Friday afternoon games a resounding success. Residents now eagerly anticipate this weekly gathering, enjoying friendly competition, lively music, delicious snacks, and ample opportunities for great socialising.

Through Elizabeth’s Lens

Bridgewater resident Elizabeth Cook has a remarkable eye for capturing the world around her. Over the last few months, her photography has focused on the vibrant life and intricate details of our gardens, reminding us to pause, admire, and rediscover the everyday wonders that often go unnoticed.

What stands out the most though, are the small moments of joy like a resident rediscovering an old hobby, neighbours lending each other a helping hand, or the warmth of conversation over morning coffee.

ANGIE MASSEY
VILLAGE MANAGER AT CLÉ DU CAP

As I reflect on the past year, I am reminded how our Village is not only a place to live, but a home where friendships grow and where each day brings opportunities to connect and enjoy together.

One of our most visible achievements has been the ongoing improvements to our garden spaces. Whether it’s the roses in bloom in our unique Rose Garden, the shady trees offering quiet moments of rest, or the bursts of colour that brighten our daily walks, many residents and visitors have told us how much comfort they find in strolling through the pathways and our not-so-old Recreation Park.

We have also made significant upgrades to our internal roads, ensuring that getting around the Village is smoother and safer for everyone.

Beyond the physical environment, the success of Clé du Cap lies in the activities and events that bring us together. Over the past months, residents have enjoyed a full calendar of gatherings, social events, special functions, games, and celebrations. Each of these moments has created opportunities to connect, to laugh, and to build memories. It is often in these simple but shared experiences that the spirit of our Village truly shines.

What stands out the most though, are the small moments of joy like a resident rediscovering an old hobby, neighbours lending each other a helping hand, or the warmth of conversation over morning coffee. These daily interactions weave the fabric of our community, turning ordinary days into something meaningful.

Looking ahead, there is a lot to be excited about. We plan to continue enhancing our grounds and Villlage facilities. Just as importantly, our activities calendar will keep expanding, offering more opportunities for residents to stay engaged, active, and connected.

At Clé du Cap, our vision is simply to create a place where residents not only live but thrive. As we celebrate the progress we’ve made, we also look forward with excitement, knowing that together, as a community, the best is yet to come.

Top Service Award

FOR ROTARIAN GEOFF VON KLEMPERER

Geoff von Klemperer, a third-generation Rotarian, has dedicated the past 13 years to driving impactful community service projects through the Constantia Rotary Club.

Despite a decline in membership, the club’s initiatives have flourished under his leadership. For the past three years, Constantia Rotary’s projects have been recognised as the best community initiatives across all 58 clubs in District 9350.

As outgoing Projects Director, Geoff was recently honoured with a fourth sapphire to his Paul Harris Fellowship Award, one of Rotary’s highest acknowledgements of service. He shares this distinction with fellow Rotarian, Richard Rawson. Named after Rotary International founder Paul Harris, the award recognises outstanding contributions to humanitarian aid, educational opportunities, and peace-building efforts, and reflects a deep commitment to Rotary’s guiding principle of service above self.

Over the past five years, Geoff, together with Richard Rawson, Peter Haylett, and Peter Rogers, have helped raise R11 million to fund and manage the construction of multi-purpose synthetic grass sportsfields at four township schools. These projects have transformed opportunities for more than 4,000 learners.

Working in partnership with Sporting Chance, they also introduced structured coaching in two schools to ensure every child has access to supervised physical activity, including soccer, netball, athletics, touch rugby, and cricket. Drawing on their combined expertise in engineering, finance, and project management, the team collaborated closely with school governing bodies to assess needs, design layouts, manage contractors, and deliver turnkey facilities at Westlake, Capricorn, Siyazakha and Brown’s Farm. A project at Grosvenor (Atlantis) is also nearing completion. By donating their professional services, they significantly reduced costs and maximised impact.

These sportsfield initiatives complement other community projects led by the group, including donating an ultrasound machine to Victoria Hospital, building library shelving, refitting a kitchen at Westlake United Church Trust, establishing a Grade R class at Westlake Primary School, supporting Isiphiwo Primary School in Khayelitsha, and hosting pensioners’ Christmas dinners and health interventions.

Since moving to Clé du Cap in February 2021, Geoff and his wife, Suzanne von Klemperer, have continued to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to building stronger communities and creating brighter futures for children.

A Blooming Good Day

Our residents recently set off on a delightful outing to the West Coast National Park, where the annual flower season transforms the landscape into a breathtaking sea of colour. This much-anticipated spectacle only comes once a year, when the park opens its doors for visitors to witness the wildflowers in their full glory.

Blankets of orange, yellow, purple, and white stretched as far as the eye could see, inviting many to pause for photos, or simply to stand still and soak in the beauty of nature. The coastal views and peaceful atmosphere added to the magic,

creating a day filled with both serenity and joy. Of course, the outing was not just about the scenery. Along the way, there was plenty of chatter, laughter, and shared stories, making the trip a chance to deepen friendships and create cherished memories.

The group rounded off the day with a hearty lunch in Langebaan before returning home to Clé du Cap, grateful for an experience that reminded everyone of life’s simple pleasures.

FlowerPower

This season, our gardens are putting on a spectacular show of colour, offering joy and tranquility to both residents and visitors. A simple walk along the pathways invites you to pause, breathe, and take in the beauty that makes our Village grounds so special.

Standing proudly, the Red Hot Pokers ignite the beds with their fiery blossoms, while the delicate Red Pin Cushions add a splash of crimson with their rounded blooms. Gazanias bring cheer as they open wide to the sun, their petals glowing in warm shades, and the graceful Chasmanthes lend elegance with their soft orange-red flowers.

Balancing this vibrancy, the sweet simplicity of English Daisies brings a gentle charm, while in shaded corners, the Forest Lilies bloom quietly, their graceful flowers creating a sense of calm and serenity.

Together, these blossoms transform our gardens into a sanctuary, a place where colour meets comfort, and where beauty continues to inspire peace, joy, and connection.

ANTHEA BOSCH
VILLAGE MANAGER AT HERITAGE

Change is never easy, yet the past year pushed our limits, delivering waves of transformation and upheaval.

What began as a simple project of moving a few rooms and adding doors to enclose the patio, evolved into a monumental construction and renovation exercise. This transformation significantly impacted both the Clubhouse and Healthcare Centre, and I am incredibly grateful for the patience and resilience shown by our residents.

The entrance to our Clubhouse and Healthcare Centre has received an amazing facelift, with changes to the reception area, hairdressing salon and bathrooms. The newlyrenovated conservatory is impressive, and the skylights in the dining room have brought a fresh and airy ambiance.

Despite the upheaval, our residents continued to immerse themselves in events and enthusiastically participated in the newly established Inter-Village tournaments. These included the Pickleball tournament held at Lourensford, and hosted by Faircape Life Bridgewater. We hosted the inaugural Table Tennis Tournament, and were delighted that on both occasions, our residents brought home trophies that now stand honourably in our reception area.

We also had the difficult task of saying farewell to several special and dear friends, and this aspect of the job never becomes easier.

In addition to the packed events schedule and restaurantquality meals served daily, it is the wonderful people who make us the best Village. This includes our residents, the amazing and supportive group of Trustees, and the incredible staff who work tirelessly through some very difficult and trying times, always with a smile on their face and a kind word.

Thank you all for adding your unique flavour to the wonderful aroma that is Faircape Life Heritage. May 2026 bring with it many more wonderful memories and challenges that keep us on the go.

Pickleball Makes A Triumphant Debut

Last autumn, an enthusiastic group of residents, at the invitation of Faircape Life Bridgewater, embarked on an exciting new adventure. Their destination was the scenic Lourensford Estate in Somerset West.

Upon their arrival, the friendly staff extended a warm welcome, and provided a clear introduction to the game of pickleball before everyone headed to the courts. Initially, play was a bit clumsy as everyone adjusted to the rules and their paddles but a friendly competitive spirit soon developed among the residents, leading to plenty of lighthearted banter.

The game, which is a perfect blend of tennis and badminton, proved to be fast-paced yet easily accessible for beginners, and after a few rounds, a comfortable rhythm emerged and teamwork flourished.

Ultimately, this inaugural pickleball experience was an absolute blast. It transcended simply learning a new sport, becoming an opportunity for friends to bond and forge lasting memories. Everyone departed with smiles and an eager anticipation for future excursions.

The pickleball bug had officially bitten, especially after the Heritage team secured the winning trophy in the InterVillage tournament. Under the guidance of Derek Rainey and Geoff Harris, an intensive drive has ensued to make this sport a more regular affair. Although more excursions to Lourensford would be ideal, finding something a little closer to home made more sense. After much research and meticulous measurements, the team decided to transform the Activity Centre into a very cosy court, and a weekly Heritage Pickleball event was born. Interest continues to grow, with participants enthusiastically training in order to defend their title next year.

Grand Opening

ESTATE MANAGER AT FAIRCAPE LIFE HERITAGE

OUR NEW WALKING PATH

The new Heritage walking path officially opened on 5 June to an enthusiastic crowd.

The ceremony featured speeches from Facilities Director Steven Frankal and Village Manager Anthea Bosch, who highlighted the collaborative effort and vision behind this beautiful new space. The event culminated in a ceremonial ribbon-cutting, gracefully performed by world champion race walker Edna Brand, which was met with cheers.

Following the opening, residents were invited to explore the scenic pathway. Faircape Horticulturist Tobie Hanekom and Landscape Architect Michael Woods enthusiastically accompanied groups of residents, helping them identify some of the diverse flora. Residents were visibly impressed by the sheer volume and diversity of plants. The strategically

placed wooden benches provided welcome rest areas, encouraging people to linger and soak in the tranquil ambiance.

Adding to the day’s holistic focus, Faircape’s team of physiotherapists, including Michelle, Tatum, Janka, and Jade, were on hand to offer invaluable health tips.

As the walks concluded, the celebration continued with a delectable feast from our catering team.

This new and exciting addition to our village has swiftly become a beloved hub for exercise, leisurely strolls, and peaceful relaxation for all residents. Its appeal has been further enhanced with the charming addition of bird feeders for our feathered friends. The Heritage walking path stands as a vibrant testament to community spirit, well-being, and the enduring beauty of our village.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR BODY’S

Whispers Shouts &

On a chilly Saturday morning, over a hundred ladies gathered with eager anticipation, adorned in a kaleidoscope of bright colours to celebrate Women’s Day.

A scrumptious hot breakfast was served, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, sizzling bacon, and fluffy scrambled eggs filling the air. Conversations flowed easily and the breakfast provided the perfect start, energising everyone in anticipation of the eagerly-awaited presentation by Dr. Sanien De Beer, a renowned phytotherapist.

Aptly titled ‘From illness to wellness, listening to the shouts and whispers of your body, Dr De Beer’s talk unravelled the intricate connection between our mind, body, and overall well-being. The enlightening discussion centred on the

profound importance of understanding and nurturing our Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), an often-overlooked yet crucial component of our physiology, that plays an important role in maintaining good health and preventing illness.

Dr. De Beer’s compelling presentation served as a powerful reminder that our well-being is intricately linked to our internal state and how we navigate the pressures of daily life. Her insights encouraged the attendees to embark on a journey of self-awareness, urging them to pay closer attention to the subtle ‘whispers’ and undeniable ‘shouts’ that their bodies communicate. Each lady went home with her emotional tank full and a lovely gift pack of goodies.

Noordhoek

Our community is very important to us. Research shows that friendship and social connection are key to living longer, healthier lives.

MONICA MASON
VILLAGE MANAGER AT NOORDHOEK

One moment this year that perfectly captured the incredible community spirit at Faircape Life Noordhoek was our April wildfire. As it swept across the slopes of Silvermine Nature Reserve, resulting in the entire Village, including our Healthcare Centre, needing to be evacuated, our community rose to the challenge.

Thanks to the incredible professionalism of the firefighters and the dedication of our volunteers, the evacuation was carried out smoothly and safely, filling me with an immense sense of pride in being a part of this amazing community.

It was a powerful reminder of how resilient and supportive our community is. We learnt valuable lessons from the experience and are deeply grateful to our local fire department and the Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS). The event made local and international news, including a feature in the Daily Maverick. We will certainly remember 2025 for that extraordinary event.

Happily, not all of our highlights involved emergencies. This year also saw the launch of our seasonal fun walks. On the first Sunday of each season, residents gather at 8am to enjoy a walk around the Village, choosing to do anything from one to five laps. Afterwards, everyone meets at the Clubhouse for juice, snacks, and a good catch-up. There’s no fee to take part, although we invite donations to support local charities. At our winter walk, we raised R5,000 for the Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS). A huge thank you to our Trustees for matching the amount; we were able to hand over an incredible R10,000 to these amazing heroes.

Inter-Village competitions have also been a source of joy and connection this year. From pickleball, table tennis and bridge, to bowls and darts (which we had the pleasure of hosting), these events have been wonderful opportunities to bring residents together, both within Noordhoek and across the other Faircape Villages. They remind us that a little friendly competition goes a long way in building friendships.

This year especially has shown us once again that community isn’t just something we talk about, but something we live, celebrate, and treasure every day.

Fresh Air, Friendship, Good Cause and a

A brand-new activity in our Village has quickly become a favourite. Our seasonal fun walks take place on the first Sunday of each season with residents gathering at 8 am for a refreshing walk around our beautiful village.

Residents can choose to do between one and five laps and afterwards, everyone heads to the Clubhouse to enjoy a light breakfast, a snack, or a treat while catching up with friends and neighbours. The walks attract between 30 and 40 participants each time, and while there is no fee, we

invite donations for a local charity. A different local charity is chosen for every walk, extending our community spirit well beyond the Village gates.

It’s always a joy to see families, friends, and even the occasional four-legged companion joining the seasonal walks. For new residents, it’s a perfect opportunity to meet people and explore, while for others it’s simply a healthy, social way to celebrate the change of season. Fresh air, friendship and fun, what better combination?

Twice a Year Twice the Fun

OUR VILLAGE MARKETS

Twice a year, our Clubhouse becomes the setting for the Village market, one of our most cherished traditions. The Winter Market takes place in August, and we round off the year with the Christmas market, in December.

Each market has around 30 vendors showcasing a wide variety of items such as jewellery, clothing, ceramics, books, plants, jams, quiches, honey, cheese and freshly baked treats. There really is something for everyone.

This year’s winter market included a visit from caricaturist Tyler Pike and his sketches brought plenty of smiles and

laughter. Each market is always well-supported by residents, family and friends, creating a cheerful atmosphere and a chance to enjoy a relaxed morning together.

Our craft group also organises a raffle at each market, raising funds for local charities. Prizes often include beautiful hampers and handmade crocheted blankets, which are always much admired.

Having these markets on our doorstep is a real pleasure, and they continue to be an enjoyable way to support local talent and spend time together as a community.

Darting to Victory

A new weight loss programme has been discovered at Faircape Life. Select a person who needs to lose weight, ask them to organise an Inter-Village darts competition and then watch them lose weight (and their sanity) as they run around trying desperately to arrange all the different aspects of the competition.

Luckily, our very capable Gill Gardiner didn’t need to lose weight but did come close to losing her sanity. Getting the Noordhoek players to commit, organising the opposition teams from Clé du Cap and Bridgewater, and arranging teas and coffees and a lunch for more than 30 players, was no small feat.

Gail ensured that scorers, a commentator and even some reserve players were on hand. She got the right size t-shirts, printed name tags, procured fish (more on this later) and so much more. She did of course, have some help along the way from our Village Manager Monica Mason, our kitchen staff, the sound gurus and the shoppers who purchased the prizes.

The competition was held in the Noordhoek Clubhouse in August 2025, when 32 players congregated to do battle. After some cursory introductions, the rules of the competition were explained and the real fun began. Several

noteworthy events occurred on the way to the final, including the whiteboard dusters being attacked (sometimes quite ferociously) by some players who hadn’t practiced!

There were occasions when the scorers ran to stand behind the throwers, purely for safety reasons. Most games were played quickly, and some were almost abandoned by the scorer, due to the lack of any activity on the scoreboard after several throws.

A record number of fish were ‘won’ by players with three scoring darts and a total of 21 or less. Malcolm Laithwaite from Clé du Cap won, after an intense final against Jeremy Gleave from Noordhoek.

Prizes were awarded for:

The highest score with 3 darts: Jeremy Gleave with a score of 134 (Noordhoek)

The first triple 20: Brenda Bertels (Noordhoek)

The first female bull: Honor Breyer-Menke (Noordhoek)

The first male bull: Noel Heale (Clé du Cap)

A tasty lunch was had before fond farewells were shared and everyone made their way home, with commitments made to join the next one. A RESIDENT AT FAIRCAPE LIFE NOORDHOEK

Surviving the Dry Dock

Sea Hawk, our 105-year-old Dutch barge, has been part of our lives for 25 years. We found her in France, and since then she has carried us, our family, and friends on countless adventures along the waterways of France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. She is our second home, 18 metres long, weighing 45 tons, and built of riveted iron plates that have withstood more than a century of travel.

Our most recent journey took us from our home port in St Jean de Losne, near Dijon in France up the River Saône to Rupt-sur-Saône. Every five years, barges like Sea Hawk must go into dry dock for hull cleaning, checks, and painting, and this time our Swiss neighbours had recommended the small but busy Rupt dry dock. It was a five-day trip, through pretty villages, winding rivers, locks, and even 19th-century tunnels that were once hauled through by horses and women on foot (thankfully not by us).

Life in dry dock is rustic but charming. With no working shower or taps onboard, daily life involved a walk past sheep, chickens, and a donkey to the bathroom at the lock. Raoul and Alexi, the proud young owners of the dock, welcomed us with croissants each morning and, on our last day, a gift for each of us.

The hull was blasted clean, inspected, and declared in fine condition for another seven years, with just a few rivets replaced and fresh paint all around. When the final coat of paint dried, just hours before a hailstorm, we knew Sea Hawk was ready for many more journeys to come.

Onrus

Thriving community life is central to the well-being of our residents. Nothing brings people together than sharing a meal and laughter around a table, and we have seen great enthusiasm for our regular monthly dinners, themed pub suppers and games nights.

LIZE HOLTZHAUSEN
VILLAGE MANAGER AT ONRUS

The year started with renewed vigour, with five brand new, modern homes added, bringing the number of cottages at Onrus to 190, and a record 268 residents.

Over the past 18 months, an amazing group of seven founding Body Corporate members moved to the Onrus Healthcare Centre, all well into their 90’s.

The Village calendar has been buzzing with games, activities, events, and outings. Long-standing favourites such as the Bridge, Bolivia, and Rummikub Clubs continue to thrive, while a dynamic Chess Club has also emerged. Our gym, table tennis, and pool facilities have been serviced and are attracting a growing circle of enthusiastic players.

The 2025 Inter-Village Tournaments were a highlight of the year, with quiz, bridge, pickleball, and Bowls bringing out plenty of friendly rivalry and spirited support.

We have had a wide range of interesting talks from the likes of the Hermanus Astronomy Centre, the GeoScientist Group, and the U3A. The Stoepstories-of-the-month, the Library Club, Garden Club, Rugby crowd and our line dancing troupe have also held gatherings.

Our residents are very proud of their monthly newsletter, the Manor News, to which a ‘Library Matters’ page has been added this year to celebrate our fantastic library that has over 4,000 books. Several volunteers have helped us digitally catalogue all the books. To make space for new volumes, nearly 1,000 books were withdrawn, donated to charity or offered to second-hand book stores and the proceeds were ploughed back into the library.

The ladies of the social committee truly sparkled this year. Many of our functions were paired with a meaningful purpose, such as the winter warmer collection and raffle in support of Animal Welfare, handed-over at the festive ‘In the Pink‘ Ladies Night.

Our landscaping team embarked on the first phase of a refurbishment of our verges and common gardens. The main avenue from the guardhouse to the Clubhouse has undergone a facelift, creating easy paved access and a shaded bench.

It has been a rewarding year, and we now look forward to a new season of sunshine, laughter, and shared memories.

a Book of Poems

Barbara Stuart, a beloved Onrus resident, invites readers on a journey through the highs and lows of existence in her new poetry collection, Life. Her poetry explores joy, laughter, pain, and reflection, painting vivid pictures of beauty, distant places, and notable figures.

“Life is a story, and every story is unique,” Barbara says. “Our experiences, attitudes, and emotions shape us, and poetry is a way to express them.” Whether seeking inspiration, solace, or a spark of imagination, Barbara’s poems encourage readers to pause, think, and reminisce - a journey worth taking.

Members of the Garden Club recently enjoyed a delightful outing to Camphill Community Farm in Hermanus. The weather was perfect, calm, sunny, and welcoming and a lot of fun was had.

The group was greeted by Michelle, who shared a fascinating talk about the farm and its resilience following a devastating fire and floods during the year. Afterwards, we wandered through the nursery, marveling at a vibrant array of vegetables and herbs, including strawberries and micro herbs. We then relaxed under the shade of a large tree, sipping tea and enjoying biscuits while sitting on logs. Our visit ended with a trip to the workshop, where some of the Camphill residents were busy knitting and sewing.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our resident, Julie MacPhail, for organising this memorable outing.

GlassWarmArt

Onrus resident Rose Jaffray recently gave a captivating tea time talk on the art of creating warm glass, showcasing a stunning selection of her work.

Rose began her ceramics career in 1985 under the guidance of renowned national potter Garth Hoets. Her achievements include winning the Corobrik National Ceramics Exhibition and being one of only three South African potters selected to represent the country at the prestigious Fletcher Challenge Ceramics Award Exhibition in New Zealand. In 2009, she expanded her artistic journey by studying the intricate craft of warm glass.

Residents left inspired by Rose’s passion and the delicate beauty of her creations.

Tokai Estate

A day at Faircape Life Tokai Estate is as much about keeping the mind active as it is the body. Bridge remains a favourite game, and this year we have even created a dedicated Bridge Room for residents to enjoy.

VILLAGE MANAGER AT TOKAI ESTATE

ANN STEEL

What a year it has been!

This has been the year of 80th birthday’s at Tokai Estate, and each one has been celebrated in style. From bespoke catering to personal touches, every occasion was unique, but perhaps the best part has been seeing family and friends, often travelling long distances, come together to share in the joy. These milestone birthdays are a wonderful reminder that growing older here doesn’t mean slowing down. If anything, it means living life to the fullest.

Our walking and hiking groups are another great example of this. Week after week, residents set out to explore new corners of our beautiful surroundings. It’s more than just keeping fit; it’s about friendship, laughter, and the joy of being outdoors.

Our newly renovated pool has also been a real highlight. With heating for the winter months and training lanes added, it’s now a space to enjoy all year round, whether for exercise or just to relax.

As the warmer months approach, we are looking forward to our annual trip to the West Coast flower season, which promises a bumper year of colour and splendour. We’re also especially proud of our very own Marinda Nel, who was part of the team that once again brought home Gold at the Chelsea Flower Show in the UK. Marinda will be sharing her experience with all the Faircape villages, and we couldn’t be prouder of her achievement.

A day at Faircape Life Tokai Estate is as much about keeping the mind active as it is the body. With our mix of wine tastings, musical evenings, theatre outings, Friday film nights, and lively discussions about documentaries, it is easy to see why there is always something happening to bring people together at Tokai Estate.

We feel lucky to be living this chapter of our lives in such a vibrant and supportive community, where every day offers a chance to relax, connect, and celebrate life.

Milestones Birthday Celebrations

This year we have hosted several private birthday parties with tremendous success. The first was in honour of Joan Kerkhoff’s 80th birthday, a joyful occasion that brought together families from as far away as America. The evening was filled with laughter, warmth, and togetherness, and a beautiful reminder of how special it is to celebrate life’s milestones surrounded by loved ones.

Another 80th milestone was celebrated by Phil Barnard, with notable figures from the business world joining the dinner. The evening unfolded like a symphony of flavours and sweet delights, earning widespread acclaim and leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. Guests praised both the

impeccable service and the exquisite cuisine, including the dish that has since become famously known as ‘Tokai’s fillet’ with mustard béarnaise sauce.

Di Benningfield also celebrated her 80th, this time in the cosy setting of the pub, where guests from Johannesburg and Natal enjoyed a delectable spread of canapés. The birthday girl beamed with happiness, surrounded by nieces who helped with invitations and carefully curated the music for the evening. The joy of the celebration was clear for all to see, making it another memorable and highly successful milestone event.

A Half Century OF LOVE & HAPPINESS

At Faircape Life Tokai Estate, we love celebrating life’s biggest moments, and few are as special as honouring a love story that has stood the test of time.

Our pub came alive with warmth and celebration as friends and family gathered to honour the Frasers’ 50th wedding anniversary. Guests were treated to bespoke canapés including delicate smoked salmon, crispy parmesan breadsticks, and an array of tempting delights that had everyone raving. Laughter and conversation flowed as effortlessly as the sparkling drinks, creating an atmosphere of joy and intimacy. The couple themselves glowed with happiness, their delight mirrored in the smiles of those around them.

As the night unfolded, heartfelt toasts and nostalgic stories filled the air, each one a testament to the Frasers’ enduring love and the memories they’ve created over five remarkable decades.

Teasers & Wheezers EXPLORE

CAPE TOWN

The Wheezers Walking Group and Teasers Hiking Group have been going strong for some time, bringing together residents who love the outdoors and the joy of staying active.

This year, both groups tackled some truly extreme conditions, from steep mountain trails to windswept paths, all in pursuit of Cape Town’s breathtaking countryside and rugged terrain. Despite the challenges, the laughter, camaraderie, and shared sense of adventure made every step worthwhile, a true celebration of friendship, fitness, and the natural beauty that surrounds us.

The Power of Teamwork

WHY OUR INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM GETS RESULTS

At Faircape Health, exceptional care doesn’t happen by chance. It’s the result of a thoughtfully coordinated Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) of dedicated healthcare professionals who work together to deliver seamless, personalised care with compassion and expertise.

From the moment a patient arrives at any one of our facilities, our IDT steps in with a commitment to getting to know the person behind the diagnosis. We take the time to learn more about what matters most to them. Is it walking to the garden unassisted, enjoying meals with friends or regaining the confidence to speak clearly after a stroke?

These details might seem small but they’re what drive our IDT, who pool their knowledge, experience, and insights to develop a care plan that considers every angle. Our doctors, nurses, carers, physiotherapists, occupational and speech therapists, social workers, and a dietitian don’t operate in silos. Instead, they meet regularly to discuss progress, troubleshoot challenges, and adapt plans in real time.

What Makes Our Team Different?

For our patients, this means fewer gaps in care and more coherent thinking. When a resident is supported by a team that communicates openly, cares deeply, and acts decisively, they feel it. So do their families.

For example, if a resident recovering from surgery is feeling anxious or is not eating well, the team doesn’t treat each issue separately. Instead, they work as a unit to explore how physical discomfort, mood, and appetite may be interlinked, and how to solve it together.

Our team also benefits, frequently expressing how rewarding it is to be part of a set-up where their input is valued, their work feels meaningful, and they can see the impact of their efforts every day.

This kind of professional synergy not only builds trust and respect, but it also leads to smarter decision-making, faster interventions, and ultimately, better health outcomes. In the end, it’s not just about what we do but about how we do it, and at Faircape Health, we do it together.

THE MAKING OF AN ECO ESTATE

At Faircape Life Tokai Estate, sustainability is a way of life. Here, every tree, pathway, and water feature plays a part in creating a growing ecosystem where people, plants, and wildlife live in harmony.

In most urban landscapes, herbicides and pesticides are the first line of defence against unwanted plants and pests. However, we’ve chosen a different path that embraces bio-control systems and natural gardening methods that protect the environment and create healthier, more vibrant spaces for residents and local wildlife alike.

Take our aphid challenge, for example. These tiny sapfeeding insects leave behind a sticky residue that attracts ants, which in turn, protect the aphids, allowing them to multiply rapidly. Soon, a black fungus begins to grow on the sugary residue, threatening the health of surrounding trees and plants.

Instead of reaching for chemical sprays, our gardening team partnered with a specialist from Arderne Gardens, in Claremont to find a sustainable solution. Controlling the ant population with safe, targeted treatments allowed the ecosystem to rebalance naturally, and the results have been remarkable.

By letting natural predators do their job, our trees are thriving, restoring balance, and creating a living example of harmony between people and the planet. Frogs have returned, insects are buzzing, birds are singing, and the ecosystem has begun healing itself.

These small victories are everywhere. Indigenous plants such as proteas and fables provide food and shelter for birds, insects, and even chameleons, who are making a welcome comeback. Our carefully managed wetlands capture rainwater, support tiny mammals, and reduce flood risk, while adding quiet, reflective spaces for residents to enjoy.

For those who live here, it’s more than beautiful scenery. Walking trails lined with native flora, the gentle chorus of frogs at dusk, and gardens alive with butterflies offer daily reminders of nature’s rhythm. Studies show that spending time in green spaces reduces stress, improves mental health, and fosters a sense of community, benefits we see every day at Tokai Estate.

Life on an eco estate isn’t about compromise; it’s about connection to the land, to wildlife, and to each other. Every conscious choice, like planting to water management, contributes to a living, breathing environment that nurtures everyone who calls it home. Here at Faircape Life Tokai Estate, nature and people thrive together, proving that urban and green living complement one another beautifully.

Forever in Bloom

SUMMER GARDENS THAT LAST ALL YEAR

Summer carries its own kind of magic. The gentle hum of bees, flowers stretching out in the sun, and evenings lingering over drinks with friends. While it may feel like the pinnacle of the gardening year, the real joy lies in a garden that has been carefully nurtured to flourish through every season. A little care and thoughtful planning can keep your garden vibrant from season to season.

1.

START FROM THE GROUND UP

Great gardens begin with healthy soil. In summer, the sun can quickly dry this out, leaving plants gasping for nutrients. Mulch is a layer of bark or compost that helps lock in moisture, keeps weeds at bay, and improves the soil as it breaks down.

2.

WATER WITH INTENTION

A common mistake in the heat is to water plants often but with too little water. Plants prefer a good soak a few times a week, preferably in the early morning or late evening so the water has time to sink in. Investing in an irrigation system makes life easier, conserving water and saving you time.

3.

CHOOSE SUMMER FAVOURITES

This is the season to go bold. Lavender, Salvia, and Gaura thrive in the sunshine. If you love containers, try cheerful Gazanias, Marigolds, or Petunias. Remember to invite nature in too with pollinator-friendly plants like Coneflowers, Verbena, Sunflowers, and Alyssum.

4.

STAY AHEAD OF PESTS

Insects enjoy summer time just as much as we do. Keep an eye on your plants and act early if pests appear. Natural helpers like ladybirds, garden birds, and companion plants such as Basil and Nasturtiums can keep things in balance without resorting to chemicals.

SNIP, SHAPE, AND REFRESH

5. A little pruning and deadheading makes a big difference. Removing spent flowers encourages new blooms, keeping your garden looking fresher for longer. Tidy up shrubs and climbers to help them stay in shape and give you more of those picture-perfect moments.

“Summer is the season to go BOLD. Lavender, Salvia, and Gaura thrive in the sunshine...
Remember, your garden is a place to live, RELAX, and CELEBRATE life.”

THINK BEYOND THE SEASON

6. Summer may steal the spotlight, but smart gardeners know to plan for what comes next. Late bloomers like Dahlias and Echinacea will carry colour into autumn, while bulbs planted now promise a burst of cheer come spring.

7.

HARVEST AND SAVOUR

For those who grow edibles, summer is a season of abundance. Herbs are fragrant and full, tomatoes are ripening on the vine, and cucumbers and beans are ready for picking. Harvesting regularly not only fills your kitchen but encourages plants to keep producing.

8.

CELEBRATE THE SEASONS

Remember, your garden is a place to live, relax, and celebrate life. Summer may be the highlight, but by following a few simple steps, you can enjoy an outdoor space that feels alive and welcoming every day of the year.

TOKAI ESTATE EARNS 4-STAR WATER RATING FOR SUSTAINABILITY

This year, Faircape Health Tokai Estate proudly achieved a 4-Star water rating from the City of Cape Town and this milestone recognises our exceptional water conservation and efficiency practices.

Water Utility Solutions, a subsidiary of the Faircape Group, was the appointed water management company, helping to complement the following water-saving initiatives:

• Solar-powered water heating systems across the estate.

• Borehole pumps powered by solar PV, reducing reliance on municipal supply.

• Rainwater harvesting via JOJO tanks for non-potable purposes in all homes.

• Irrigation management through centralised scheduling, optimising borehole water use.

Looking ahead, Tokai Estate aims to further enhance its sustainability credentials, with plans to implement stormwater management and explore greywater recycling, continuing our journey towards a greener, more efficient future.

Feline Fine: THE HEALING POWER OF CATS

Cats have been our companions for thousands of years, adored for their quirky personalities, quiet presence, and entertaining charm. Whether curling up in a sunny spot, purring softly on a lap, or keeping watch from a window, they bring comfort and a sense of calm to those around them.

Yet, behind those gentle purrs often lies a mischievous streak. Here are a few of the funnier sides of feline life:

• Box Mania: Enclosed spaces make cats feel safe, and they love the challenge of squeezing into the tiniest of boxes.

• The Zoomies: It’s normal for a cat to sprint around after the litter box.

• Kings of the Castle: Cats feel secure and in control from high up, and love perching on shelves or windows.

• Laser Love: Nothing entertains a cat (or their humans) quite like chasing a laser toy. It taps into their hunting instincts and provides good exercise too.

• Purr-sonal Affection: When a cat is obsessed with you, they’ll show it by rubbing against you, purring, blinking slowly, or just snuggling. These behaviours generally stem from their natural instincts, a need for mental stimulation, and a desire for security.

At Faircape Life, several of our Villages have their own resident cats who are adored by everyone. Yet beyond the fun and games, our cats are also an important part of our pet therapy programme.

Studies show that spending just 15–20 minutes with a cat each day can lower stress levels and release feel-good hormones like serotonin and oxytocin. Stroking a cat, listening to their purr, or simply watching them play can ease anxiety, lower blood pressure, and foster a sense of calm.

For residents who may not be able to keep pets of their own, our community cats, like the mischevious Miss Melody and the gentle Sweet Flower at Faircape Tokai Estate offer the comfort and joy of animal connection.

A Pet Partnership

The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS SA) continues to transform animal lives across Cape Town’s most vulnerable communities. Our busy welfare hospital in Phillipi offers comprehensive veterinary care to pets in lower-income neighbourhoods across 4,000 km² of the Cape Metro, with a special focus on the Cape Flats. Our centre relies on the generosity of the public, trusts, foundations, and our valued corporate sponsors to keep our mission thriving.

AWS SA’s community-driven services include

• Affordable pet sterilisation

Vet services for disadvantaged areas

• Re-homing stray and abandoned pets

• School-based pet and animal welfare education

Thanks to Faircape’s partnership with AWS SA, residents of all six pet-friendly villages now benefit from our AnimalAssisted Activities (AAA) programme, bringing joy, comfort, and companionship to all those in their care.

“It is amazing how all of this comes together. It truly reflects the love and compassion humanity is capable of when given the chance. There’s no such thing as a bad relationship with an animal, and at our core, who we are is revealed in how we treat those without a voice.”

Kelsey Leigh-Moore | Pet Manager, Faircape Health

The

of Afternoon Tea

There’s something wonderfully timeless about the ritual of afternoon tea. The time-honoured tradition began in 1840 with Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, who would ask for a tray of tea, bread and butter, and cake to be brought to her room at around four in the afternoon.

Soon she began inviting friends to join her, and by the 1880s, afternoon tea had become a cherished custom, filling the long gap between lunch and dinner.

Part of its enduring charm lies in the fine details like crisp linen, pretty porcelain plates, tiered stands, and delicate favourites such as cucumber sandwiches, bite-sized tarts and a selection of good tea.

Here in South Africa, we’ve added our own flair, swapping out Earl Grey for Rooibos, lemon drizzle for milk tarts, and even adding a touch of biltong pâté and some koeksisters in place of éclairs. It’s this blend of tradition and local flavour that makes the quintessential afternoon tea so unique.

Hosting your own afternoon tea doesn’t have to be an elaborate or complicated affair. The secret lies in setting a serene scene, using a small bouquet of flowers, mismatched

teacups, and a few homemade (or bakery-bought) treats. Soft background music, and folded napkins go a long way in creating that inviting atmosphere.

When it comes to the menu, variety is key. Include savoury, sweet, and fruity or refreshing options. Smoked salmon pinwheels, scones with whipped cream and jam, and a platter of seasonal fruit never go out of style.

Also consider adding a caffeine-free drink option such as hibiscus or honeybush tea, and perhaps a sparkling iced tea with mint and lemon for a cooler twist.

A few timeless etiquette tips add to the experience. Always serve tea in a cup, never a mug, warm the teapot beforehand and pour the tea before the milk. Most importantly, take your time. The beauty of an afternoon tea lies in its unhurried grace, so don’t rush.

Ultimately, the true art of afternoon tea isn’t about perfection, but presence. It’s about sitting down, switching off, and savouring the slow rhythm of conversation, whether shared with friends or enjoyed as a quiet moment of reflection.

Water You Waiting For?

8 WAYS TO BEAT THE HEAT

Summer is here, and the heat is on. Whether you’re inside or out, your body needs extra fluids to stay healthy and energised. Water helps regulate body temperature, cushion joints, supports digestion and promotes healthy, glowing skin.

Hot weather increases sweat. Dehydration can sneak up on you, especially in children and older adults. Dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue, dizziness, dry skin or mouth, muscle cramps, and even a rapid heartbeat or confusion.

Here are some practical ways you can stay hydrated in the heat:

1. Sip before you’re thirsty: Sip water throughout the day and with every meal.

2. Keep water close: Have a reusable bottle nearby.

3. Add flavour: Change things around with some lemon, cucumber, berries, mint, or iced herbal teas.

4. Eat water-rich foods: Watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, lettuce, and oranges have a high water content.

5. Limit caffeine and alcohol: Both cause dehydration, so drink extra water if you indulge.

6. Time your outdoor activities: Avoid being outdoors at midday, and have a bottle of water with you.

7. Dress light: Loose, breathable, light-coloured clothing helps your body stay cool.

8. Know the warning signs: Weakness, dizziness, confusion, or excessive sweating may indicate heat exhaustion. Move to a cool spot, hydrate, and seek help if needed.

Remember to always listen to your body, and enjoy a safe, hydrated summer.

Summer on a Plate

These bright, breezy recipes bring all the flavours of summer straight to your plate. They’re perfect for laid-back summer dining with all the family.

Alfresco Chicken Thigh Skewers

INGREDIENTS

For the Skewers:

• 1 large skewer (30cm)

• 250g deboned chicken thighs

• 1 red onion, cubed

For the Marinade:

50ml mild sriracha hot sauce (Tabasco)

30ml sweet chilli sauce

2 tsp sugar

20ml Kikkoman soy sauce

1 tsp white wine vinegar

1 tsp crushed garlic

Handful of finely chopped, fresh coriander

For the Dressing:

50g creamy mayonnaise

30g plain yoghurt

1 fresh lime or lemon (for serving) (SERVES 2)

Pinch of freshly-ground black pepper

Pinch of sesame seeds

Handful of sliced spring onions

METHOD

1. In a mixing bowl, combine the marinade ingredients. Stir well until the sugar dissolves completely.

2. Add the chicken thighs and ensure they are well-coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours to marinate.

3. In a separate bowl, mix mayonnaise and yoghurt until smooth. Stir in the black pepper, then cover and refrigerate until ready to serve

4. Thread the marinated chicken thighs onto the skewer, alternating with pieces of red onion. Don’t pack them too tightly. There should be a little space for the fire’s smoky flavour to penetrate.

5. Place the skewers over hot coals (medium to high heat). Grill until the edges start to char and caramelise, then turn over.

6. Continue cooking and turning until the chicken is fully cooked and the marinade has been used up and cooked through.

7. Remove the skewers from the fire and plate. Drizzle with the chilled yoghurt-mayo dressing.

8. Sprinkle sesame seeds, and spring onions and serve with lime or lemon wedges.

Picnic Perfect Salad

(SERVES 3-4)

INGREDIENTS

200g fresh watermelon, cut into bite-sized cubes

• 80g ripe strawberries, hulled and quartered

• 40g crumbly feta cheese

30g Chevin (goat’s cheese), crumbled

2 tsp toasted pine nuts Handful of fresh basil leaves, torn

• Aged balsamic vinegar or balsamic reduction for drizzling (optional)

METHOD

1. Gently combine the watermelon and strawberries in your favourite serving platter or salad bowl.

2. Crumble the feta and Chevin goat’s cheese evenly over the fruit.

3. Sprinkle toasted pine nuts across the top.

4. Tear and scatter fresh basil leaves just before serving.

5. Serve with aged balsamic vinegar or a balsamic reduction on the side, or drizzle lightly just before serving.

6. On a very hot day, serve the watermelon straight from the fridge. This salad pairs beautifully with grilled meats.

Berry Popsicles

(SERVES 6-8)

INGREDIENTS

• 200g frozen mixed berries

• 50g fresh mango, chopped

50g fresh pineapple, chopped

20g castor sugar

100ml tropical fruit juice

METHOD

1. Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend until completely smooth and the sugar has fully dissolved. The texture should be thick but pourable.

2. Pour the mixture evenly into your popsicle moulds. Insert sticks and place the moulds in the freezer.

3. Freeze for at least six hours, or until solid.

4. Once fully frozen, remove the popsicles from the moulds.

5. Store in an airtight container with layers of greaseproof paper in between to prevent sticking.

6. Run warm water over the outside of the moulds for a few seconds to easily release the popsicles.

7. You can add a splash of white rum or vodka to the blended mixture before freezing for an adult twist. Adding alcohol will slightly reduce how firmly the popsicles freezes.
