Where:

David Marusek is a long-time Fairbanks resident. His fiction has appeared in Playboy, Nature, MIT Technology Review, and Asimov’s, and has been translated into nine foreign languages. According to Publisher’s Weekly, “Marusek’s writing is ferociously smart, simultaneously horrific and funny, as he forces readers to stretch their imaginations and sympathies.” Marusek loves writing flash fiction between his novel projects and has published three of them in a national magazine. So, what was Hemingway’s six-word story? Come to this year’s Writing in the Dark and find out!

For the creative writer, flash fiction offers the chance to sharpen narrative skills in brief but complete bursts of fiction. And the form has become so popular that opportunities abound for publication online, in magazines, and as part of writing contests.

Holes in My Shoes Thursday March 4, 7:00 pm at the Pioneer Park Civic Center Theater

94-year-old New Yorker Jack Beers has broken the age barrier full force. Jack is not like any man his age. Raised in severe poverty in the Lower East Side, he became a ‘strongman’ and was known as “New York City’s Strongest Boy.” He helped build Radio City Music Hall and an invention, made while working on the Manhattan Project, helped shorten WW2. He erected the Empire State Building spire, was a professional dog trainer, and acted in over 200 films. At 94, Jack rides 3 miles every day on a stationary bike, drives, wrestles 30 year-old men, surfs the net, cuts down trees, mows 5 acres of his lawn, and much more. The film ends in a grand finale with Jack singing “When You’re Smiling” on top of the Empire State Building in true Jack Beers style. An inspiring, funny and moving film. A true rags to riches story. 2006, 90 minutes. Documentary. Written and directed by David Wachs.

Calaya Williams Calaya Williams was born in Santa Monica, Ca, raised in southeastern Kentucky, returned to California in the 70's and moved to Fairbanks (home!) in the early '90's. In CA she studied and cocreated mural art with Dexter Smith and exhibited various visual art in bay area galleries. Following a spinal injury several years ago, while unable to stand, she learned to peyote stitch and fell in love with beading. Drawing on her painting and sculpting skills, her bead works are inspired by her relationship with nature. Currently her focus is work on a collection of small, bead & wire sculptures. She continues to bead baskets, although smaller ones using larger beads, gratefully using her hands & eyes while she readies herself for a corneal transplant.

Nelda L. Benson-Nixon is a home grown Fairbanks kid. I did all my schooling here, graduating high school in 1959. In the 40’s my father started Larson’s Jewelers & Locksmith. I worked for him, running the business for 12 years, until it was sold in 1989. Then I worked for the News-Miner until retiring in 2006. My first few watercolor lessons were in 1990. Then, after not painting for ten years, I began again in 2001. I have studied with many nationally known watercolor workshop instructors and locally with Neville Jacobs, Gael Murakami, Nelda L. Benson-Nixon Vladimir Zhikhartsev, and my husband, Tom Nixon. I truly enjoy painting on location or ‘en plein air’ in and around Fairbanks and elsewhere in Alaska in the summertime. I consider the scenery in Alaska to be so breathtakingly beautiful, it is a constant challenge to ‘capture’ it on paper. Which you never can! But, I also enjoy painting pictures of some of the old buildings and landmarks around Fairbanks in my own watercolor style. Mostly, I just love to paint!

In a Nick

Fairbanks Arts Association is pleased to help foster and support artists of all genres. For the next year we will feature the science fiction series In a Nick by Cheryl Joens. To learn more about FAA’s programs, please contact Melissa@fairbanksarts.org.

Thank you!

People stood glued to the information monitors. Updates remained continuos as the crisis played out on their Eastern Coast. “Tropical Storm Megan has now been re-classed and upgraded to Hurricane stature. It has been given the name Cindy…” The being that had slipped through the nick in time seemed to be at rest, if you could call riding

on the back of gale force winds resting. But he was waiting for just the right moment. When it came he began working his way down, much like one of the planetary ocean surfers, sliding along the inside of the hurricane adding small ingredients to the churning mixture as he went. Eventually he landed on the ground and stepped off into

the calmness of the eye of the hurricane and began walking away. As he walked, he seemed to be sniffing the air and sprinkling a fine dust-like substance about him from a pouch that was slung across his shoulder like a haversack. “If our calculations were correct, if we judged the variables accurately…” he trailed off.

I volunteer at Fairbanks Arts Association because I want to do my part. As a visual artist, I’ve submitted my work to FAA’s juried art shows. I’ve had some work accepted and some work rejected. Regardless of the outcome, it’s the opportunity to submit work that I so appreciate. To be an artist in Fairbanks is to be part of a large and active community. For the last forty years, FAA has played a vital role in supporting and promoting the arts and artists. How many individuals, how many artists, poets, writers, musicians; how many children’s lives has Fairbanks Arts Association touched? The tally’s immense. For me, it is a joy to think that by doing my small bit that I’m contributing to this much larger picture.
